You started a thread titled Do You Garden? almost two years ago. It's in the Creation Forum under Art, Music, and Photography. Home/garden decor topics don't quite fit there, but they don't fit in the other subcategories either. I'd vote for a new subcategory under Creation.
  2. valerie Inshan wrote: Good morning all! I've just had an emal from Ajja: his chemio is almost finished and he is on the way to remission. I've been hoping for such news so much, I wanted to share them with you! You've all been so supportive and caring to me! I hope I can post even better update soon, but these are already fantastic news. I love you all so much! :smileyhappy::heart: That's great, Val! It's good to see you happy again.
  3. Happy almost Friday! I'm bummed -- I won't be able to go to Hippiestock or Val's breakfast. I hope everyone has a good time (and someone takes pictures).
  4. 16 wrote: is a wiki link here for taking photos with the viewer http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Photo_checklist seems much of the settings on it been worked out by some of the top photographers in SL. people like Torley. Strawberry Singh also for example who does a lot of the SL website photos these days Thanks for posting that link -- I didn't know about it. The DOF settings might be the most useful to me; I spend a lot of time tweaking it for a particular shot. My computer's specs are: Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (quad core with hyperthreading) 16GB RAM 240GB SSD/ 1TB hard disk NVidia GTX 660 Ti graphics card 50 Mb down/10 Mb up Internet connection I set graphics to ultra with a draw distance around 300 meters and most sliders set higher than ultra when possible. I don't generally use DOF because it annoys me when I'm walking around. All I do for photos is play with Windlight settings and occasionally DOF. Here's a shot I posted in another thread recently: (No DOF on this one - I take all pictures to disk, then crop them as I wish and resize to something even.)

Is this safe for kids? How do I find such an organization? All this is assuming that he is interested in trying it out. Mary The sponsering organizations (really, the people doing this) have to provide verifiable RL information to LInden Lab. These are generally educational institutions and educators. I don't know if there is a public list of these. My google-fu is failing me right now. These locations are ALWAYS private estates with controlled access. There is this list of locations in the destination guide of locations maintained by Non Profits and Educational Institutions. Perhaps some supervised exploration of some of these locations could be nice. For instance, I have walked in Neil Armstrong's foot steps on the Moon in NASA's virtual representation of this. (I think that is still active). http://secondlife.com/destinations/learning/1 ETA, The Non Profit Commons may be a good place for you to look. http://secondlife.com/destination/359 Nonprofit Commons is completely G-rated, but it is not an organization that sponsors 13-15 year olds. I haven't heard of any groups that do sponsor that age range. Any group that sponsors 13-15s has to have a private estate (1 or more regions). There would be very limited access to that region from anyone in SL -- they'd have to be approved by the sponsoring organization and added to the access list. The kids who register through the organization are restricted to the estate. They cannot go into the rest of SL or into the Marketplace.
  6. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: Knowl, I'm not a novice with computers but what the heck is a "system board and tray"? In my mind a "system board" would be a motherboard (or maybe the more correct term "main board"). But in conjunction wht "tray" I'm sort of at a loss. If you built your own computer (or assembled a bare bones kit with some added hardware like a video card, power supply, audio card, etc) then congratulations. I was so proud of my first build I could pop.........and no one cared (hahaha). The problem is that now you're hooked.........you'll never want another off the shelf machine again (never, ever). In some cases the motherboard fastens to a removable tray that is then fastened to the case. It makes installation easier.
  7. Happy New Year's Eve! I took a lot of pictures of my land in preparation for taking down the holiday decorations, but I'll only inflict one more on this thread: ETA: The entire set of pictures is here.
  8. SophinaMagic wrote: Well I have windows 8 and I'm currently using firestorm but with I downloaded it and run it there's no SL voice I have done everything I can , there is no SL voice on the mxyer or at all the SL voice works for others viewers but firestorm I have no idea what I can do . I prefer firestorm over every viewer if someone can try and help me thanks, I installed Firestorm on a spare computer I'm using to play with Windows 8. When I started Firestorm the built-in firewall popped up a message asking if I wanted to allow SLVoice.exe to access the internet. If you don't allow it, voice won't work. That might be the cause of your problem too. I haven't found an easy way to change the setting; perhaps someone else here knows the way.
  9. Czari Zenovka wrote: ACK...just saw these replies today. :matte-motes-bashful: In my defense, Dec. 24th was my birthday. Anyway, thank you so much, 16, for putting some specs out there for me. Many thanks also to Theresa and several others of you who have added info. I especially like the breakdown of money spent per year on various types of PCs. I'm not going to attempt to build my own this time...just too much that could go wrong. However, I will most likely be updating any PC I purchase as time goes on. I have installed new hard drives and added RAM, but never installed a new graphics card. Is that difficult to do? Installing a graphics card isn't harder than installing a hard drive. Make sure the PC you buy has at least one 6-pin graphics card power connector, or two spare 4-pin power connectors (for use with an adapter cable). The power supply should be at least 450 watts. That'd be good enough to run an NVidia GTX660 Ti - plenty good for SL. Otherwise you might have to upgrade the power supply along with your graphics card.
  10. Blaz Neuman wrote: wow, that's weird !!!! It's like saying every software installed on a pc uses some ram even if you don't launch it... :matte-motes-oh-rly: The scripts in objects worn by an avatar have been launched. If they require a touch to do something, they have to have a handler running to watch for the touch. If they work via a chat command they have a listener running. A script in inventory isn't running -- same as an unlaunched program on a PC's disk. You might be able to stop the scripts in objects you're wearing, but it would have to be done each time you put on the object (and every time you log in) -- it's much easier to delete the scripts from a copy of the original object and always wear the copy.

  12. Welcome to the thread, Jerry. It's my last day of work for 2012, so Happy Friday, everyone!
  13. valerie Inshan wrote: Well Lia, I am afraid I will have to wait to come home after Xmas.... The land shows 0 prims available (when I should have over 400), I'm not even mentioned as the owner. Although my tier is paid for another month.... A bad internet connection can cause these bugs. I can"t even TP or send IMs, pfffft! So, I'll be spending Xmas either homeless, or freezing my butt in the snow! Did you put your house back since this post? I just checked it out and here's what I saw: The parcel properties say you own the land and there are 99 prims free.
  14. Madelaine McMasters wrote: Good morning Hippie, Lia, Par and Val! Did you ever ponder the perils of pinching a promiscuous polar bear, Par? No, but I've meditated on the merits of mussing the mane of a meandering mare, Maddy. Sorry I'm late to the game. Work keeps interfering with play. :matte-motes-frown:
  15. Good morning everyone! Here's a picture from Val's party of Maddy getting to know the polar bear better:

Perrie Juran wrote: 16 wrote: Orca Flotta wrote: Having property in a Linden Home area is considered bottom of the barrel. according to Tyche Shepherd's last survey is 41,689 people living in the bottom of the barrel seems also there is a waiting list to get in to the more popular housing estate types. bc linden havent provided enough Linden Homes sims At a rate of 128 512sqm parcels per region, that equals 325 regions. That is more than 10% of the grid now. Velly Interesting. Actually, it would be more like 64 Linden Homes per region (or less). The prims required for the houses must be accounted for in the region's 15,000 prims. The homes aren't packed together like the old First Land 512sqm parcels; there are paths and small park areas on each region too. That doubles the number of regions, but it's nowhere near 10% of the grid. There were once 30,000 regions. The number is smaller now. but I don't know what it is. Say it's 25,000 regions - that means the Linden Home regions would be approximately 2.6% (650/25000) of the grid.
  17. Good morning/afternoon/evening, everyone! Here's a cross-post from the vanity thread: Santa doesn't get many breaks this time of year. :matte-motes-wink:
  18. There have been a lot of great pictures here lately. I've enjoyed seeing them. It's been awhile since I've posted anything in this thread, so here's Santa taking a break. ETA: I didn't mean to reply to Kobuk -- I forgot the Reply button on the bottom left is flaky.
  19. Good morning to all, and to all a great day! It's better than hump day for me because I've got Friday off. @Val: Glad to see you've got snow on your land. I hope to get to your breakfast.
  20. valerie Inshan wrote: Good morning Hippie and all! May you have a great week! Went to give Santa my wishlist yesterday. I've been very, very, very kind to him! Happy Monday! (Is that an oxymoron?) I'd say Santa got the best part of the deal, no matter what he gives you.
  21. Happy Saturday, everyone! I've been working on winter decorations on my land ... still so much to do.
  22. VGIF (Very Glad It's Friday)! Those are cool pictures, though I'm not so fond of the box of snakes. I prefer snakes out of sight and not near me. Have a happy day everyone!
  23. A region owner doesn't have access to IMs. That would require access to the software running on the server. The region owner only owns the data that the simulator software uses to create the region. The Lindens control the server and its software. Note: a region isn't tied to a specific server. Depending on the type of region, it could be running on one or part of a CPU on any of thousands of servers. Someone might hack into the system, but I doubt it's worth a possible jail term to listen in on IMs in SL. A compromised SL client or misbehaving Linden are two other possibilities.
