  1. I didn't call you LordSadCat. I don't think 'Happy' fits either ... you should consider a name change.

With computers, all you need to do is upgrade/update the old and slide in the new. It's easier than you're making it out to be and yes it takes qualified software engineers to see that. You're making it sound like it hasn't been done before. <snip> I'm a qualified software engineer (somewhere around 30 years in the field), and I've already told you that when conditions change enough it's far worse to try to modify an outdated design than to start fresh. SL as it's used now is not what LL designed it to be. The fix is to do a new design for the current (and predicted) requirements. As for architecture, I'm glad to know that I can merely swap out parts to turn the Empire State building into the Taj Mahal.

For popular events where you can't enter the damn sim for like 2-3 days, instead of having everyone staying in front of a computer clicking the LM nonstop, why not have a queuing system where you queue up for entry? Almost all MMOs with instances have this feature. To prevent afking at the landing spot (which is entirely possible as you afk while you queue), if you don't move for let's say 5 minutes, then you get kicked out and have to queue again? SL isn't an MMO. It doesn't have instances. Don't expect LL to make server code changes like that for such a limited case, especially when they're working on the "next generation virtual world". A script could be used to boot people who don't move from the landing spot for a period of time, but that would be up to the land owner. Actually, SL is an MMO. It's massive, it's online, it's multiplayer. The only difference is instead of being 80% gaming, 10% social and 10% cash shop like a regular MMO, it's 80% cash shop, 19% social and 1% gaming. Anyway it's not even that hard to implement considering Firestorm implemented tons of new features and they're a volunteer team. All it is is a queuing script that will auto-tp you when your number is up. But since LL rarely if ever implements new features... yeah I don't expect this to be implemented. Just thought I'd leave this thought here. You missed the percentages for creating ... something a regular MMO doesn't have. All a client-side script can do is automate clicking the TP button. The servers handle moving avatars onto a sim. Currently, if the sim is full the server rejects the TP request or blocks the avatar from walking/flying into the region. To implement queueing, the server code would be modified to queue up sim entry requests then grant them as people leave the sim. You'd want to add a way for a client to display queue information and to remove itself from the queue, so there would be client changes as well.
  5. First, this is a resident forum. We're not Linden Lab employees and you're not likely to reach them via a forum post. SL has been updated drastically over the years. Ever compare in-world pictures from 2004 and now? A software design, like any design, is based on the requirements and assumptions made at the time it's designed. If the requirements change enough, the design won't be able to handle them. SL is past that point. LL can make some changes (as they have been), but there's a limit. Drastic changes to the software would break everything. People would leave and SL would die. SL will die anyway -- sooner or later someone will come up with something good enough for people to abandon what they have in SL. LL is creating a new product hoping to be the 'something better'. LL can't afford to wait much longer -- it'll take years for them to get the new product out the door. Once it's released, LL will keep SL around (as long as it's profitable). BTW, We don't know LL's next generation virtual world will be like SL at all, other than there will be user-created content, we can keep our avatar names, and the same currency will be used.

  7. Think about what a police officer would have to do to find someone to arrest in SL. He'd have to observe someone engaged in an activity that's illegal in Germany, get the names of the avatars involved, get a U.S. court order to force Linden Lab to divulge the real life information for those avatars, then see if any of those are German citizens. It sounds like a huge waste of time and money for a very slim chance of success. ETA: It would be funny if the hypothetical police officers ended up catching each other. Is voyeurism a crime in Germany?

That's only 6-8 months from today. You've misunderstood or misquoted Ebbe. I don't expect to see SL2 before 2016, if at all. In your most humble opinion Is that early or late 2016? What do you mean by if at all, are you saying the CEO has lied to us? Something as complex as SL2 cannot be taken from concept to delivery in 6-8 months. From my experience with such things, two years seems more likely. So I'd expect to see SL2 ready for occupancy no earlier than mid 2016. I don't think that disagrees terribly with anything Ebbe's been saying. And, to ensure that my opinion is humble, I'll admit that I'm terrible at estimating how long it'll take me to complete a project. That's one reason I retired. I was just getting tired of burning myself out to keep my unrealistic promises. There appear to be some things I cannot learn. As for "if at all", Ebbe cannot control the unknowns and external forces at work on Linden Lab. I expect Ebbe and his team will work like hell to make their dream come true. But, that is no guarantee of success. If they try their best and fail, as I often do, it is not a lie. It is life. Why are you preaching to me? I don't need technology lessons either. I asked a question relating to the sl economy and you're off on some personal riff about deliverables. The ceo told us 2015. Do you know when LL started development, no, you only know when it was announced, am I correct? Just because you are terrible at estimating doesn't mean Mr. Altberg is as terrible as you. From a meeting with Ebbe at Nonprofit Commons on Friday, July 25: >>EBBE LINDEN: Sorry for those who heard me the first time but I'll do a bit of a repeat. I was just saying that I like to drop in and meet with a lot of different groups, trying to do it as often as possible to learn more about the communities in Second Life and the use cases of Second Life and what works and what doesn't work so well and what can we do better. And I also mentioned that yes, we have started to talk about the fact we're building a next generation virtual world. Not a ton of detail of what it is exactly but I'm happy to take questions and answer as much as we know at this point, which is not even close to everything. It's very early. It's going to take years. It will probably start to reveal itself in some sort of alpha beta form later next year. Note the "It's going to take years" and "alpha beta form later next year" ... the new virtual world isn't just around the corner. At this point in the design stage (very early), nobody has a good guess at how long a project will take. Until they know what they need to do, they can't make a reasonable estimate. We know they haven't been at it long ... they've just started hiring people to work on it. Why worry about the value of a Linden anyway? As has been pointed out already, it's controlled by LL. Besides, LL could zero out everyone's Linden balance and call it a day ... it's officially play money, after all. :matte-motes-wink:

Those who upload will be able to upload again, of course. No sense of loss for them. How about AM Radio, Bryn Oh, and others I won't name here since it's probably against the rules? There are artists in SL who create art that can't exist in real life. Some of it can be reproduced elsewhere, if the artists are still around and wish to do so. Much of it will be lost. When SL goes, AM Radio's last remaining work, "The Far Away", will go too.

  13. Chronometria wrote: A lot depends on the land barons and what they do. If the larger barons make the leap to the new second life, then they will likely abandon their holdings in the old one, so that they are not in direct competition with themselves. It will become in their interest for second life to shut down, so that their customers move with them. If the new platform is popular, then the barons will have to move anyway, triggering the above process. Basically, once a decent new version of second life appears, the old one will die pretty fast. Why would land barons abandon their holdings in SL as long as they're making money? They're not in competition with themselves by having land in both worlds -- they can potentially make money in both. The time to leave is when they stop making a profit.

I'd probably start killing other people, knowing that the worst they could throw at me is a two year sentence. ;-). And after a year, when they figure out how to keep the world from ending? Oops.
  16. kiramanell wrote: Amethyst Jetaime wrote: I suggest you go back and read what Ebbe actually said. The world is not coming to an end anytime soon. Not so sure about that. What if ppl heard tomorrow that the real world only had 2 years to go?! I bet ppl would consider that *extremely* close. Just because SL is a virtual world doesn't mean 2 years isn't equally near. If the real world had only 2 years to go, would you kill yourself immediately so you don't have to wait till the end? SL is still here and will be for several more years. Nobody will die when it's gone (I hope). There's no reason to panic about it now. (Wait a couple years and then panic. :smileywink:) Two years is unlikely anyway. I'd estimate (based on over 30 years in software development) that if LL does the job right, it will take at least three years before SL 2 is released. Even then it will be an empty world, so figure another year or two before people have built it up enough for most people to be interested in it. Note: Doing the job right means starting from scratch -- new design, new requirements, new code. The current code base has over a decade of kludges. It can't be trusted & shouldn't be reused.
  17. Vivienne Schell wrote: Beta will be within six months and they do not have a clue on FORMATS? Nor on the visual appearance? Infrastructure? Graphics Engine? Server Software? Database? Legal and community framework? Whatever? Sorry, but the investor who bought this must be pretty simple minded. Ebbe said they were aiming for a beta in 2015. What company has ever hit the very beginnning of their target, especially with something as complex as SL? If they manage a beta in 2015, look for it in late December. If LL does the job right, it'll take months to work out their goals for SL 2, several more months to get the design in place, and then they can start coding. It's a lot of work and LL can't throw hundreds of people at it like Google or Microsoft could.
  18. My guess is the majority of SL residents aren't involved in role play, but there's no easy way to prove it. I don't consider playing ourselves in SL as role play, since we do that in our real lives as well. SL is a platform; we build and do what we want with it. It can be used as a social platform (though I don't think Linden Lab thought of it as such, or they would've built better chat tools), for role play, for creating, for business, ... whatever you wish, as long as you don't violate the Terms of Service. Use Destinations and the search tool to look for things you're interested in - odds are good there's something you'll like. ETA: Argh, this was meant as a reply to the OP. I forgot that only the Reply button at the top of the page is safe to use for that.
  19. Perrie Juran wrote: Sassy Romano wrote: Answers in order:- Nothing, no, nothing. Longer answer, if the speed of the object is faster in two frames than the simulator physics engine can calculate your position, you can go straight through the prim before a collision is detected and even less than nothing happens since you never collided. A method frequently used to fly through objects which might otherwise be in ones path. But if I understand correctly, if you don't make it through the object in time that is how you get stuck in them......one of the banes of vehicle travel. If you're moving fast enough, the simulator might calculate your position before the obstruction and after the obstruction -- you wouldn't hit it. If you're moving slowly enough, the sim will have plenty of time to calculate your position as you hit the obstruction. Then you bounce off or stop. The problem is between the two: You can get stuck if your speed or bad luck causes the simulator to calculate your position as within the obstruction. Move slowly or really fast (but really fast is bad news on region crossings).
