  1. It's difficult to get worked up about something you don't participate in personally. Isn't the sale of your data pretty much the whole raisin-d'etre of social media anyway? I assume that anyone who does participate is OK with that or wouldn't link their account? I don't know, perhaps I am missing something about this.
  2. It was difficult for me to know that it wasn't a serious scenario being asked about, especially in light of the other topics around privacy right now. My answer was hypothetical too though.
  3. No, I wouldn't be OK with it but from a privacy point of view not because I am ashamed of anything in there or that would make me pause to show others if I should choose to show them my inventory at all. There isn't a lot of context around why this would happen and I would expect to see what justification could possibly be given as to why it was necessary. I wouldn't do anything with my inventory at all if it did happen but if I wasn't satisfied with the justification as to the change, and to be blunt I cannot see what justification could possibly be given that would satisfy me as to the need to do so, I may well decide take action and close my account. To me privacy isn't something that's important to a person if they have something, real or perceived, to hide, it's important to have by default unless there is a compelling justification to have it removed.
  4. If this turned out to be like data collection/data selling in the real world, chances are there would be nothing we could do differently anyway. I'm not particularly worried what my purchase history would show as there isn't anything there I would be ashamed of in any way. If it turns out to be social media logins well a) I don't have any social media accounts and b) even if I did I wouldn't be stupid enough to use them to login to any other services with. If it turns out to be something else then I'll deal with that when the time comes. If LL ended up doing something I really couldn't live with then I would close my account just as I would with any other internet service.
  5. Ceka, each to their own and you don't have to justify why you want to play with alternates. If you are having fun, that's all the reason in the world you need. I hope I didn't seem to be criticising your choices because that was not my intention.
  6. I cannot conceive of any feature that could temp me away. Maitreya has everything I want in a mesh body. No future body is even going to support alpha cuts and so it wouldn't even have all my non-negotiable existing features let alone any new have-to-have-grabby-hands-features. I'm not saying it could never happen but it seems inconceivable at this point. Perhaps it would take a nextgen fundamental shift in SL to achieve but for me support for a few new addons isn't going to cut it.
  7. The problem with networked ban lists for bots where people flag the accounts is that real people will inevitably get flagged for one reason or another and then start getting denied from places that the owners aren't really wanting to deny them access to. All this without any proper way to appeal it and get removed. We've already had enough drama around this, let's not make it worse.
  8. There's simply no way I'm moving off Maitreya on to anything else. I don't see the point if you're happy with it as I am. I can understand people wanting a different body style/shape that they cannot get with their Maitreya or if there is something that bugs them about it that they simply cannot overlook but even then I would suspect every body has/will have things about it that bugs people. I would say be careful you aren't trading one set of things that bug you for another.
  9. What a very fortuitous thread to have discovered. Almost like someone went back in time and planted it knowing what might transpire. I'm fascinated to see if it survives. It should and should be impossible to derail in theory. Hoping, of course that this post doesn't signal it's death-knell. It's importance right now cannot be overstated. Congrats @Rowan Amore I bestow on you the forum excellence award on behalf of all off-topic posters:
  10. Over the years that the inworld ban has been active, I have seen no evidence that it deterred people from causing a problem here. Mostly like the ones who intend to cause mischief have already established an alt to try to protect their main. It may or may not work to protect it but it didn't deter them from attempting it either.
  11. Oh, you are referring to them only allowing SL topics. That wasn't what I was taking about in my response to @CaerolleClaudel, no wonder I couldn't follow your logic. It isn't an either/or situation though. They could still stop doing the inworld ban even with this in place and that is what I think should be done regardless.
  12. It only fixes it for that account, I said that right at the start. That account cannot be used again. Of course there is no total fix for that person coming back but what are you suggesting? That mods give up their ban hammer? Every forum mod bans people even though they know this too. You said this: What is "their fix" that "is better"? You haven't answered this question.
  13. OK, I'm going to bail on this one because it isn't making any sense and we are going around and around. I'm not sure whether you are arguing that a double-ban is the best fix or that no bans at all are the best fix. I think a forum ban at least makes it so they have to start again at the place they caused the problem but inworld wasn't the place where they caused the problem, hence isn't necessary and doesn't have any additional benefits to doing so.
  14. I was 100% aware of all that before I typed what I did. Presumably you mean the double-ban. I'm confused. How exactly is their fix better?
  15. Sure but banning them inworld too has no effect on their ability to do that either and that's why I said for that account. If the account is banned from the forum, no amount of VPNs and Mac spoofers will get around that for that account.
  16. I absolutely agree. It shouldn't be about punishing anyone, it should be about stopping the problem. If they are banned from the forum then that problem is solved completely for that account and nothing more is necessary.
  17. Be brave, just remove them. If you get drama then you definitely made the right choice.
  18. With my settings, I get IMs in chat and nothing appears anywhere else. So play around with them, just take a backup first.
  19. Chat will always show on the screen in some form. Mine appears in the bottom left as a semi-transparent area over the main screen when the chat/IM/group/contacts window is closed.
  20. I noticed when the political threads went nuclear they would suck a lot of the energy out of all other topics. I'm not really interested in debating RL topics here hence I don't miss them, however they were never a problem for me as it was easy to ignore them. So I was OK with them being there except when they went nuclear which I suppose was inevitable from time to time. I did and do notice what came after the new rules were introduced though, they have had a chilling effect to a degree. I can understand why some people don't feel welcome. That said, people are mostly a lot less angsty around here now which is actually quite nice.
  21. I turn off toasts for IMs. Also if the chat/IM/Friends/Groups window isn't visible on screen, I just get a small icon notification in the corner so it's easily ignored if I don't care. It's possible to configure your way around some of this on Firestorm at least.
  22. @BelindaMercedesGetting that offline message usually doesn't "fool" someone who is motivated to know though because when they see that message they will just go check using a reliable method to see if they really went offline. Good thing though is that the ones who start drama over it are self-selecting themselves as candidates for unfriending.
