On SLU and now Virtualverse one could always see who is online.
Is it useful? Nope.
Does it bother anyone: Nope.
Does it help retention: Nope.

It bothered some people enough they changed their profile pictures in protest.

ETA: Unless I'm conflating my "Forum change led to protest reasons".

I mean, happy now?!?

It was PKed. On the ham radio board the feature was turned off a day after Invision added it.  Mainly same thing as here --- our admin on the radio board said "We got too many didn't like it and as a possible drama creator. We don't need to make more work for the moderators."

It didn't bother me though.
