Maybe it's that people have learned how to disagree and debate without so many personal attacks.

Nope.. just much less people being here than other times*, also some that did have a tendency to act as if the forum is some sort of a public courtroom and should be taken seriously found other things to do while online.

(* less people = less reactions = less people indulging in forum drama)

Generally I think we got the balance about right. There is always room for improvements of course but for a medium sized internet forum with a wide and varied clientelle it's actually very good. Except for two fields that is.

One is of course the political arguments that pop up every now and then. They tend to be rather nasty and futile since the political climate in some dominating and loud nations isn't very result oriented nowadays. Besides, such discussions are not really appropriate in an international forum since they will always really be relevant to a fairly small fraction of the forumites.

Those arguments are just a nuisance though and as long as they are kept in separate threads and don't turn up as digressions in actual discussions, they can be safely ignored.

More important is how we treat newcomers. We do have a tendency to assume that everybody are familiar with the codes and conventions and we tend to be too quick to criticize and too slow to guide.

Im not completely sure about that, maybe in the General Discusion subsection, Ill give you an example, a known troll made an alt and started posting in different sections of the forum. In the people forum he was quickly found out and treated like you would treat a troll.

In the building and market sections of the forum, he posted his usual drivel, but people were genuinely helpful, treating his troll comments as if they were actual concerns in a very supportive manner.

I think that friction between veterans and newcomers happens when the newcomers try to force a conversation without having lurked the forum enough.  This should be basic procedure for anyone who has ever been in a forum, always lurk first, get a feel of the forum.   If crypto threads are being shot down from the first reply, maybe dont start a thread about how we need crypto in SL, if there are 3 threads about what your RL gender is in the first two pages of the forum, dont open a new one, etc.

I think this happens in every group, both online and in RL, people dont like outsiders rushing in and telling you how to live. You have to warm up to the community first.

It isn't too nice for people awake at the moment but some nasty postings have been reported and could well have gone by the time those in the Americas wake up.  I'm just posting this to help shove it off the page in the meantime.

A few minutes later.

It's gone already.  Well done, that mod! :)
