So I'm trying to shop on Marketplace and I have my setting to general (I have children in the room.)

Why does it always always default to Adult? Every time I hit "next" it goes right back to Adult. Why???

Try setting the desired maturity level and then click search (maybe also enter some keywords). It should be remembered.

Set it to General and then log out and back in.  That usually works to lock the setting preference.

If you open the marketplace without log in this is what shows up. Is not a matter of settings.

Well that sucks.

I never log out, so seldom ever see the generic stuff.

One would think that LL would want anything showing when not logged in to definitely be PG.

I generally believe that SL has a good reputation also because as far as I understand the environment of sex is managed in a very careful way.
The problem is algorithms and what they believe is overriding in human nature.
But there is a need to reflect in my opinion why the algorithms of SL decide to show these contents.
We know that algorithms are innocent souls and have no guilt, so what does this mean?
What do most of the users in SL do?

I just opened the marketplace in an anonymous window (so no previous settings or search history to confuse matters) and this is what I got.   It defaulted to General, which I expected.

Not so different from mine.

Depends what people are buying at the time, I suppose.   I've just tried three more times, a couple of minutes apart for each one, and each one has produced very G-rated results -- some Gorean silks were the most risque item it offered me.

I also opened it in incognito navigation and I have more or less the same results.
it's clear what most users are interested in ...
It's a shame because SL I think has a lot of potential beyond the small niche it has closed itself into.

I'm not seeing all the bad adult content with clean browser.

It's also not a niche. The Adult side of SL is the niche, and while it might be attention grabbing, it's far from the core detrimental activity people like to paint it as.

There are 571,162 products marked as adult on the SLM

There 7,466,859 general and mature ones.

For every adult product, there's a bakers dozen that aren't, but they just don't freak people out the same way, Much of what's listed as adult, actually isn't. The bulk is creators erring on the side of caution - like t-shirts with swearing, or thigh high boots or just entirely regular stuff because they are afraid of judgmental people reporting them.

Want to make money in SL ? Sell home & housewares, outfits or hair or shoes. Because everyone needs those, not just the tiny few here for the explicitly adult market.

Adult content and expression is fundamental to the success of the platform, especially to people who have no interest in humping pixels.

So yes, it's pretty plain what people are into - playing house and dress up, and that SL is a mirror.

I really appreciate your effort to make SL look like something other than what it has actually become.
I also have that kind of instinct because I love SL and I see so many things inside.
But let's be clear.
When you open the marketplace 90% of the things that come to you are pornographic stuff.

You're actually serious ..

It's a dress. With a hole in the middle. It is not in the pornographic in the slightest.

Look I can assure you that my searches have nothing to do with porn. But 99% of people if they open the marketplace they get these results.
New window opened in Incognito after cleaning the cache.
