If one shares a groupmembership they always can see your status, also there are several scripts to find who can show the same. Also if you forget to uncheck the "only friends can see my online status" all will see it. And if they don't look at it and send you a message....... not the offline response, the message will make clear you'r there.... If you really want to hide, create a alt and never tell any of your friends your name.... if you tell one, the risk is they won't keep it secret and spread it ...and all starts again.... You are not being rude, you have no obligation to respond, remind them of this. Respond with the word "busy". If they can't accept that, remind them that you have no obligation to respond. I may be in another application, stepped away for a while, dealing with something RL or just feel like doing something else.
