Nekos do not use any sort of special shape. You use one that you like, maybe the same you are already using for your current avatar. Also roughly 90% of all Nekos I met inworld over the past years just wear a normal human skin, there is no general trend towards animalskins and there are also not really much quality skins of that sort around. The whole thing is basically about the ears and the tail. However,  there are a few tattoos on the marketplace, which would add some nice stripes or dots to your current human skin.

On a sidenote:

The whole "Neko" trend faded away many years ago, so a lot stuff you find when searching for neko products won't be necessary up to date.

Free and cheap is going to look cheap.

Actual parts sold as for nekos tend to be rather poor in quality.

To do it right - get a good cat furry, and just use the right parts.

Furry makers are more experienced and tend to model their own things, and these days use mesh and detailed textures - whereas neko kits are typically made by unskilled hands and just use a freebie script or two, some kind of ear-sculpt kit and a cone or cylindar set to flexy.

And the 'Jerboa mesh tail' is probably the best tail right now in SL - for both nekos and furries. Highly customizeable into many shapes and texture options. Animated and no alpha issues as the actual mesh itself animates - yet fairly lightweight script wise.

Actually in SL and in Anime it has that same meaning: a human/cat hybrid.

SL human avatar dressed as a cat. Like in cat ears and claws but most often wearing a horse tail. (typical referred to as SL neko). Example:

Comic/cartoon/anime neko also available. Example:

Laurel asked about free or cheap. Is pretty difficult to find anime neko free or cheap in SL. But can more easy do a SL neko free or cheap

I am trying to figure out why we are arguing about what a neko in SL is with someone that has only been in SL for 2 months.

Figure no more. You may not be aware that irihapeti has been in SL from the ancient times with different accounts. It's only that the present account she uses is new; the person behind it is an oldbie SL user - no newbie at all.

Who also happens to now hold the record for the Cliffoed to Pounce Starchild Rally which is no small accomplishment.

I had no way of knowing that... I still don't see what the arguement is all about.. a neko is a cat person.. whether it's a mesh head or not, still a human with cat ears and tail.. 99.99% of the ones i have seen in anime do not have cat feet. I don't know where they got that idea.

Thanks for the info! :matte-motes-big-grin:

Neko is neko is neko. And different people have different takes. I don't like the horse tails either, but I recommend you not get all "I'm purer than you freaks" on people who don't fit your brand or flavor of neko.

Neko's been around here a lot longer than your account has. I've been a Neko in SL longer than your account has existed. There used to be a very active neko blog:

http://virtualneko.com/  or http://secondlifeneko.wordpress.com/

A tumblr page from that blogger: http://virtualneko.tumblr.com/

Used to be a forum we'd all chat on, but it seems to be gone and I can't find it throug bing at the moment.

Back when - people in some circles of SL would refer to the more cat-like but not furry folks as 'feral nekos'. But then the 'feral neko' is so rare, even in anime and other sources - that that term might just be limited to the virtualneko old forum as a way for some people to tell the two apart.

Generally, and including in anime - the look usually involves cat ears and cat tail. Every other trait seems to vary with each individual artist - sometimes even for the same character as with mythological cat-women.

Common other traits are fangs. The whiskers, cat paws and cat feet are more uncommon. Eventually you replace the head with a cat head and end up with an egyptian diety. Add body fur and you've got a furry.

Actually, there is a neko *look*- if you're just going to put on a tail and ears, why bother? It's like a skinhead growing a beard and wearing trainers, or a Hells Angel in shorts and flip-flops. We used to scam contests and run rackets to raise the Ls to buy the best neko gear to look the part. I think the best stores are gone, not gonna name names but some of the current big name neko specialists are selling complete, freebie-standard crap. And let's get this straight - nekos are NOT furries, and had zero in common with them (except maybe hating goreans).

To the OP - it's an attitude too, all the original sl nekos were griefers and would never back down from a fight, to the point the vampire clans crumbled because we were hitting their sims so hard. The real neko hardcore all dissolved around 2011 (or got banned) or gave up when every dullard in a ballroom frock started turning up in their Freebie Galaxy ears and tails. We were 'criminal class' at one point, but it was a lot of fun running wild from sim to sim.
