You need to be wearing it (or have it rezzed on the ground) for it to work.

The scripts in objects in your inventory do not run. They are suspended in the state they were in when they were taken in or detached, and will resume from that point when they are rezzed or attached.

Oh, my.  Well, they could give you a tracking device (as part of a piece of jewelry, or some article of clothing) that you wear unwittingly. That's probably the most common way. Or, if the person is on your friends list, you could give them permission to see your position, and then forget that you had done it.  Or they could use good, old-fashioned detective work.   We are creatures of habit, so it's not too hard to predict that sooner or later we'll come back to the same favorite spots. A person could just visit those spots randomly and hope to find you by luck. If he were a little more sopphisticated, it would be simple to set up a detector on each of your favorite sims that would tell its owner when you arrive.  There are many variations on those themes, but that's a start.

Besides Rolig's great list, they could...

1.  See if you are on line by looking at the membership list of your groups;

2.  With some viewers, see if you are online directly, with a notation in your profile;

3.  Send you an IM.  If they do not instantly get back "ladylo Baddingham is off line" message, they know you are on line.

4.  If they are in your Friends list, they can see your on line status in both on this web page and in world, unless you have disabled that ability in your friends list.

Once they know you are on line, as Rolig says, they can simply flit around to your favorite places and see if you are anywhere nearby.  My viewer's radar works out to over 1,000 meters.

There is no true privacy in Second Life.

If you have hair or jewelry that was given to you by someone, is it possible to tell if it has a tracker in it? Mlanie, that system you posted is terrible! Thank you!

Yes, they can track you, this is how I am being stalked at the moment.  It's rediculous that they can sell these but they don't sell anything to protect yourself against jealous woman or over dramatic men.

Question @Tommy Linden : are items like this abuse reportable?

By the way: They might stop working if you exlude yourself from search and hide your online status...

They are not abuse reportable, and they can't be hidden from.

They use a standard LSL functions to track people.

    llRequestAgentData(watch,DATA_ONLINE);

This system will do nothing more that show if you are online or not.  There are tons of ways to figure that out -- see all the ways listed above.

However, the only way you can truly be "tracked" is if you have given the other person the ability to map you inworld or if you are wearing something that contains a location tracker in it.

You can check the object for scripts, but if there is a tracker in it, the script is likely not modifiable so you can't read it.

Best course of action is to simply trash any item given to you by people you don't trust.

I'm not Tommy (nor a Linden of any kind), but in general...

Items can't be Abuse Reported.  However, people who USE items to violate the Terms of Service or Community Standards can be reported.  This is along the same reasoning as "guns don't kill people, people kill people."  I can own all the tracking and griefing "tools" I want, and it's all good.  When I USE those tools to annoy or harrass others, that's when the banhammer comes out.

There are of course some exceptions, but you won't find them for sale on the Marketplace.  Things like, for example, certain banned viewers, or "alt detector" systems like the notorious "Red Zone."  Why aren't they on the Marketplace, you ask?  Because they've already been banned, that's why!

To see in detail which scripts you have on your avatar... right-click the ground. You need to be in the parcel where you click. Select: About Land. Then Script Info and then Avatar. You'll see a list.

Firestorm has some other ways to get to the same information.

You have to be wearing it.

Items in inventory are a name and database address. The actual items listed in inventory are in the Asset Servers. They are inactive sets of data sitting in the asset servers. Like a book on a shelf.

When we wear a scripted item or rez one the region server and your viewer are retrieving the parts of the item they need from the asset servers. The region server runs the script and tells your viewer what it is doing. The viewer draws the result on your screen.

The About Land feature queries the region server for the information it displays about the running scripts. In the Linden viewer the UI is such that the query looks more a 'server' thing than a viewer thing. Firestorm does the same, getting info from the server, but uses fewer clicks and thus it is less obvious whether a viewer or server thing.

If you look for the thread on region crossing problems you'll find the scripts being worn by an avatar are a major factor in failed teleports and crossings as the servers have to move script state from one server to another. Lots of scripts means lots to move increasing the chance of a time out.
