  1. What would most likely create a big offender? And do you know, do particles actually create lag for people? I had to take off my particles at that event where they tried to optimize the experience... some cute little crescent moon particles floating out of me, and it was traumatizing.
  2. Are those people you made up? I've never heard of this before. I saw a huge group of them walking slowly along the dirt roads when I took took the Belli Train ride from the Welcome Center to the Belli Hub...they had on brown robes with hoods, carrying huge crosses, and smoke was emitting from strange swinging devices, to purify the area I think.
  3. Dear God, I think they've have to deliberately work at it to get it that high..lol.
  4. It would be a fun-sucker for those attending various events if they couldn't see the event properly...hence their requirement. Just like mesh creators need to do their part by creating decent mesh, going the extra mile to learn it correctly so all will have a better experience, residents can do their part by paying attention too excessive complexity and reducing it when possible.
  5. It would be nice if you cared about how you affect others...and not just think of yourself.
  6. I'd like that, although, like you say, it is possible to check that from the Demo. My friend couldn't even get into a wonderful performance by the Spirit Light Dance Company the other week due to having a high complexity (think it was her flexi-hair). The thing is, when people don't pay attention to this it degrades the experience for all. I set my max to 200,000 and if people exceed that they are just a grey blob in my viewer.
  7. I just visited the SL Welcome area...and it's great! Wow I was totally impressed. Looks lovely, organized well, very clear instructions (even little movies to watch on various topics). A couple of mentors were there with their tags visible, other avatars were standing around (some appeared to be new residents and others might have been older ones looking to help out). I like how the Welcome area is connected to Belli, and that little ride from the Welcome area to Belli was fun and a good way to introduce people to some of the nicer residential areas in SL.
  8. Oh I sincerely doubt very many of us are doing this....not enough to skew the numbers a great amount.
  9. My alt visited the Firestorm Gateway again, and I have to say again that it's great! There's even a group you can joined named FS/SL Gateway, and ask questions.
  10. Be careful, Paul, it is reputed to be influenced by demons: "A Religious leader is telling the public to not see the newest Barbie movie because it has “demonic influences” and any child who sees it will behave differently. " https://www.wtrf.com/news/religious-leader-says-barbie-movie-has-demonic-influences-and-children-who-see-the-movie-will-behave-differently/ I have to say, I'm a little peeved about this.
  11. Does anybody know if there is a list of all Gateways?
  12. Ayashe, why are you so peeved over peeves today? When we are peeved about peeves it indicates..............oh, nvm...
  13. Well of course you can get help, if you can get there. A REAL new account will have no clue, unless they are sent there after the first login. Oh I was just bein silly. But seriously, would it matter if the truly new person went to the Firestorm welcome area? There was nothing specific about the Firestorm viewer that I could see (I did not investigate this thoroughly though)...maybe they'd just think the area had cool name. And, the Firestorm welcome area is great -- very effective
  14. I want some help and lovin' today...I'm going to log on to the official Welcome area and see if I can get it! lol
  15. Yes this is what is odd to me...I logged on with the SL viewer and it took me to the Firestorm Gateway. Apparently, as others mentioned earlier, they are depositing those who are not actually new, ascertained in some manner, away from the official LL Welcome area.
  16. It's the one we've all been talking about that opened along with the SL20B celebration. https://secondlife.com/destination/welcome-hub Oh I know it's what we've been talking about...I just didn't know how to get there, as I just made a new alt and it took me into the Firestorm gateway. Going to explore the official LL welcome hub later today.
  17. The Firestorm Gateway is great...several sims....a basic area and then an easy gateway to a more social Firestorm area...very clear instructions...lots of people around to help who messaged me...even a Linden there....gateways to various interests after completing the tutorial. Not sure a LL Welcome area is even needed, but where is the official LL Welcome area does anybody know?
  18. Rotate the selections of complete avatars varying in price, quality, genders etc. As one poster pointed out it can cost $100 or more but there are also decent ones for a little over 100L$ including a mesh body and head. I like that idea! Techie guys aren't all bad! ;0
  19. That sounds good as it would simplify the process for a new resident, but then whose avatars available for purchase would we put there? I hear people screaming FIC just at the thought of it. Maybe a contest, where 10 lucky avatar/clothes creators would be randomly chosen to market their wares at the Welcome area.
  20. "Hey everybody, Clueless Oldbiefossil here, rez date 2000 and dumb, I opened a Gateway! I'm Helping Poor Noobs, I'm a wonderful person now, that I've become a Digital Social Worker Wannabe, I feel soooooooooooo good about my self, and I'm sure the noobs will think good of me too..." *cough* I am going to have to investigate these gateways and see what's up with them. I'm wondering, does the Rockcliffe University have one? I'm doing some design work in a region adjacent to theirs, and peek over at it from time to time. Likely some educational type peeps have the attitude you're describing, but not all by any means. Some just like to pass on knowledge -- after all, that's how we, as a community, grow and become better.
  21. Luna, have you forgotten all the little stores you encouraged people to have along the way? I think you have! Like that interior design decorator that was so good (oh God, yeah, I know you hate interior design) that you hired her once for a big job and suggested she start her own little business and earn some $. And that woman who was good at texturing and so encouraged to open a texture store. On, and on. And Rowan, wow would she ever be a good personal consultant teaching how to put together a great-looking avatar, and likely earn a bit of $L if she cared to. You can, yes, earn money here in smaller amounts, but all of these people took a long road to get to that place. Newbies should be informed that the road is long and sometimes difficult if they desire to earn $L inworld, if they come with the question of "how do I earn money here"?
  22. Just to elaborate a bit more, and show another side to this where I would encourage someone who desired to earn money here... On occasion I've met an artist type of resident with talent who needed money and wanted to earn their living via their art, and I could see they likely would do well here financially if they were dedicated. When I meet such people I inform them to be prepared to spend every waking moment for a couple of years at least pursuing this goal, including learning technical skills they might not have (3d programs for creating mesh), and suggest there would be a high possibility they could earn their 1st life living here.
  23. That's probably backwards, Luna. There are certainly people who come to SL expecting to earn money. I meet a lot of people, though, who don't have that in mind at all. If anything, for them the first question is "How much L$ do I need in SL?" I came to SL not expecting to need money at all (yeah, I was naive and it was a long time ago -- times have changed 🙄) but I don't have extravagant tastes and I hate shopping. It didn't occur to me at first that money was even a question. When it did, I was living with freebie stuff. I entered club contests, took up menial jobs (yes, I was a pole dancer for a while), and then started learning to make things, gradually working into the economy. Looking back on it, those first years feel like my teen years in RL (except for the pole dancing). I didn't own property until a long time later, when I took a risk and bought a private island, hoping to to support it as rental property as well as a home. Yes, times have changed but I still meet newbies who come not expecting to need much L$ or a way to earn them. The way to introduce the topic is to give a brief overview of the possibilities and to advise starting out cautiously, just as you would if you were a young adult or a new immigrant in RL, learning what it costs to live on your own and figuring out how to do it. I think you've misunderstood what I was saying. I did not say to ask, out of the blue upon meeting a new resident for the first time, how much money are you hoping to earn. I was saying this should be the response to someone asking if they can earn money here. We should ascertain what their expectations are before listing the possibilities. Sure, not every new person who enters SL is concerned with earning money, but again, we are discussing those who have this concern. But ROLIG! You were a POLE DANCER?
  24. I agree with all that, Rolig, but I think the first question should be "how much money are you hoping to earn here"? By knowing their expectations the answer can be tailored appropriately.
