  1. Use this information: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ Once you are sure of where the problem is you may be able to improve your connection. If it is an ISP issue you'll have the info needed to file a trouble ticket.
  2. Linda gave a great answer. Your idea for teaching nursing has you entering the amazing world of virtual reality and 3D modeling. To have what some would call Non-Player Characters (NPC's) you add the requirement for a technology for which there is a low demand. So, few are providing it and SL's support for NPC's is weak. To provide the knowledgable response from the NPC's you add the demand for sophisticated Artificial Intelligence. If you were to go to college to learn what you need to know you would be looking at 3 or more college degrees. So, looking for a "simple" tutorial is a bit unrealistic. I suggest you look in the SL Forum in: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inworld-Employment/bd-p/InworldEmployment Your project pushes the limit of what is being done in SL. So, you will be doing some amount of front line design. You will see the types of services being offered and asked for. There are people that can help you build what you want. In early 2017 Project Sansar will begin opening for use by the general public. It is a WordPress-like Second Life. The goal of Linden Lab in building it is to prove a virtual relaity platform to content creators that is easy to use (read as: easy to use for building virtual experiences). We have no idea yet as to what they may have or be planning for NPC's. We do know they are improving on what we have in SL, at least from the technology viewpoint.
  3. Pocket Metaverse is the only app I know of for iPad - iPhone. The list Alwin sent you to is updated from time to time. Last update: June 2016. Mobile apps for SL are limited in what they can show on screen. Because of that I use a remote desktop app to access my home computer from my phone. I can run SL on the desktop using my phone. Most remote apps are not designed to make the SL viewer easy to use via remote access. So, it is tedious. An alternative is to use https://www.brightcanopy.com/ and run SL in a web browser. It is a retail service with a monthly charge. It takes a mid-range computer or better to run SL. Mobile devices simply do not have the needed graphics power. Services like Bright Canopy render the world on their computers and stream the result as a movie to your device. Similar to using a remote access app to see your desktop running SL.
  4. It takes a moderate computer to run Second Life and a 'good' video card to run it well. Linda gave you the link to the System Requirements. As more and more games move toward Virtual Reality and use of Oculus Rift type headsets the system requirements will increase. Your 8 year old hardware (G41) is just not going to carry the load. If you have a desktop machine you may be able to upgrade the graphics to something that will work moderately well to great. The new GTX 1060 cards go for US$200. I've seen a used GTX 680 going for $40 on ebay. GTX 560's going for $20 to $40. There are plenty that are listed for more. But, watch it for a week and you can get a deal. A problem with NVIDIA 10xx series cards is they pretty much require Windows 10. As long as you are not doing VR the 1060 and the 980/960 are about equal. If you are into the geeky stuff as it relates to Second Life, look here: http://blog.nalates.net/category/hardware/
  5. Rolig's answer is very likely correct. I'll add that you can look in the top of the viewer and see icons that tell if scripts, voice, rezzing, pushing, damage, flying, and other features of regions are enabled or disabled for the region you are in. Float the cursor over them and a tool tip explaining what they are will come up. If you log into a region with scripts disabled your HUD's likely will not work until you visit a region with scripts enabled. HOWEVER, if you log into a script-enabled-region, many scripts will continue to work in script-disabled regions. It depends on how the scripts were written.
  6. Google Translate: I want to be canceled from my card the value of the premium account of the last 3 charges and I want my account to turn basic account O laboratório de Linden não creditará cargas passadas ... nem inverterá cargas, a menos que fizerem um erro. Linden Lab won't credit past charges... nor will they reverse charges, unless they made a mistake. You can contact Linden Lab billing and explain what you want and why. If you can show why any charges were inappropriate, there is good chance you can get a refund. But, if you just changed your mind then probably not.
  7. With only 8 posts we assume you are using the Linden made SL Viewer. But, that viewer places nearby chat in the file: C:\Users\[Windows_Login_ID]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\[avatar_name]\chat.txt Private IM conversations go to the same folder and the log files have a group or avatar name, depending on who you are talking to. Firestorm does create a conversation.txt file in the same folder, which is probably a bug. It does update each time you login into SL. But, the actual logs are in: C:\Users\[Windows_Login_ID]\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm_x64\[avatar_name]\chat.txt It really helps if you use the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... to collect the computer and viewer information and paste it in with your questions. Presumably you are only using the main SL or FS viewer. If you are using RC's... it shouldn't be different, but there are more possibilities for problems.
  8. Adding nails is pretty much a thing of the past, IMO. I use Slink hands and they have 3 nail shapes. My assumption is Maitreya hands do too. If the 'factory' nail shapes aren't what you want... I'm no help. You may want to wait. Project Bento is still likely to release this month. If not, then in December. Bento will change how nails as attachments work. Bento is adding finger bones that we can animate. So, instead of changing the whole hand to move the fingers, a HUD will animate the hand and transition the fingers smoothy from one to another position. The older prim and sculpty nails released prior to Bento will be left hanging in mid-air when the fingers move. Mesh nails made prior to Bento will have the same problem.
  9. Depends on what you mean by computer setting. Assuming you are using Windows, the display settings should match the screens ability. Google for the 'how to' for best Windows graphics settings. The viewer will use whatever settings you set in Windows. For NVIDIA see: http://blog.nalates.net/2016/06/05/nvidia-settings-2016/ But, these are not setting for 'mesh', they are for everything. A number of 'viewer' things affect how your viewer will render things, including mesh. The Linden made viewer is set to provide a balance of performance and image quality. They adjust those settings for your viewer based on your graphics card. So, you start with the best general settings. Othere viewers use slightly different settings and there is a lot of debate as to whether that is good or bad and what is the best setting for a number of things. The most controversal setting that is likely the heart of you concern is the debug setting RenderVolumeLODFactor. You can change the setting using the viewers inner settings. The default value is 1.25. I think it is wise to leave it at the default. Changing it requires and understanding of Level of Detail (LoD) and its impact on performance as it affects your viewer and the servers thus everyone in SL. For photos and machinima it is often necessary to change the value. Many designers that lack an understanding of LoD tell their customers to turn RenderVolumeLODFactor up to the max (4). It means the designer can get by with less work. It tells me they are lazy or ignorant. The result is increased lag for everyone but stuff looks good. The best setting is what works for what you are doing. For everyday use keep RenderVolumeLODFactor at the default. If you tweak it, 1.25 to 2.0. The other factor that affects you and the servers is Draw Distance in Preferences->Graphics. Most things beyond your draw distance will not render. The reason for the setting is to reduce the amount of data that has to download and number of things your viewer has to render, thus improving performance of the viewer and servers. The default distance depends on your video card. For shopping it is often best to use 64m regardless of what your video card is capable of. The viewers have the ability store multiple sets of graphics settings as presets. So, I have one for shopping, one for events, one for exploring, one for photos... SWitch as needed. I set the Draw Distance based on what I am doing, generally 128m. Moving the distance out beyond that radically starts to increase the viewer and server data load. At 256m standing in the middle of a region you are 128m from 8 adjoining regions and pulling data from those in your field of viewer, in front of you. Spin 360 degrees and your viewer goes nuts drawing stuff from all 9 regions. Top of the line machines come to their knees when people push the distance out to 512m. A 360 degree turn can cause the viewer to request data from 25 regions. The Firestorm viewer has a feature that turns the Draw Distance down to 20m on teleport. You arrive and the viewer requests ONLY stuff in a 20m radius. Then every couple of seconds it increases the draw distance until it reaches your setting. The idea is to render only the things closest to you first. The SL viewer by the Lab is designed to 'try' to render those things nearby and in front of you first. It does pretty well. With both there are external factors that affect what gets rendered when and how long it takes. The Lab uses CDN to make things download faster. But, if you hit a CDN with a cold cache, it can take longer. Network connections may lag, the servers may lag - region or asset... That is the general nature of SL and the things most likely to affect how your viewer is rendering mesh. There is no single setting that is best for rendering mesh.
  10. Since you can log into this forum, you have the correct information for ID and password. The viewer and forum use the same ID and password. So, how you are entering the information into the viewer is the likely problem. Look at the top of this page to see how SL is writing your name. You'll see 'Welcome, misRoyalRed'. That is how you should enter your user ID to log into SL via the viewer. If you are using a viewer other than the Linden made viewer, you may have to enter the name as: 'misRoyalRed Resident' or 'misRoyalRed.Resident'. A space or dot may be required. It depends on which brand viewer you are using. The Linden viewer just needs the user/avatar name. Avatars can also have display names. A display name does not work for login, only the user name. You do have to enter your password correctly. Also, the region you are logging into has to be up and running. It is a really bad idea to change your password when you are having password issues. That just adds to the confusion. Solve the issue then change it if you still want to. Make sure you are trying to log into the main grid and not the Preview Grid. If you have been in Preferences->Advanced and enabled 'Show grid selection at logon' your viewer may be attempting to logon there. You have to have your account initialized by the Lab to logon in the Preview Grid (ADITI) for the first time. All the sign up stuff you have done sets up your account for use on the main grid (AGNI). To give a good answer for why you can't login, we need to know the error message you are getting. Also, which viewer you are using. When supplying tech information it is best to use the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... and copy-paste that information along with your question.
  11. The default is 500kbps. The best setting from extensive testing by the Firestorm team is either 80% of your maximum rated download speed or 1500kbps, whichever is smaller. The Max Bandwidth setting only affects the UDP protocol. Update information travels on the UDP protocol. Almost everythng else now uses the HTTP protocol. UDP has no error correction or lost packet recovery, HTTP does. If you use your system's or other tools and watch the viewer stats, you'll see data coming into your computer at different rates. That is because the viewer only needed to know how UDP was preforming, so that is what they show. With HTTP it isn't issue. So, the viewer's bandwidth settings are not much use. The setting doesn't actually affect the viewer. The value is sent to the SL region server and the server adjusts how much information it throws at your viewer. For this reason the setting is a combination of what gets you the best performance and what is best for a crowded server (crowded = lots of avatar).
  12. Alwin while not detailed in answering is right. The Lindex allows you BUY or ORDER L$. You likely ORDERED them. You can cancel the order and the cash will appear in your account's US$ balance. To get the best price, ORDER Lindens. To get them quickly BUY the Lindens. However, knowing what you are doing you can get get a better deal and only wait minutes. So, it is profitable to learn how to use the Lindex. See: http://blog.nalates.net/tag/lindex/
  13. I'll expand a little on what Rolig said by pointing out that even the Lindens are guessing on when they will be ready to roll the increase to private regions. Patch Linden talked about it in an interview on the Designing Worlds show.
  14. There are a large number of SL users that use Flickr and Deviant Art. Those services have ways to sell images/art. I think a good example of some fine avatar art is Corsario's https://www.flickr.com/photos/130117714@N06/ and there are hundreds more. Search on Second Life. I collect artists I like So, see my Favs for a number of what I consider the better artists: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nalates/favorites You can sell art in SL. The problem is it is very hard to keep images that can be displayed on screen from being copied without purchase. For that reason the high quality paper prints from other services tend to bring in more money. I sell some fine art in the Market Place. I've never made a lot of money from it.
  15. Here you ask a question and get an answer. Asking if you can talk to someone gets you a short conversation. Yes, then you are done. Ask a question that will prompt an anwer you may want. Assuming your are asking what SL is and how to use it... First SL is not a game in the strick sense of "a game". There is no goal, score, rank, grind, levels... There are however games within Second Life. Use the Destination Guide to find them. There are skill games, a form of gambling... sort of, there are role play games. Racing games, sailing games, airplane games - dog fights, table games... it goes on and on. There is an economy, US$600 million per year. People make 5 and 6 digit incomes from Second Life. It is a social network. People meet, fall in love, cheat, fight, do drama and on and on. There is no one to tell you what to do. SL is about the most free 'country' you'll ever visit. That is a problem for those used to being told what to do. There is almost no structure imposed on users. That leaves some people totally a drift. There is land to buy and use. But, it isn't required. People live productive/fun second lives without land. There are dances, live music by big names and unknowns, live kareoke... If you have imagination, you can make SL whatever you want it to be. If not, you'll be at a loss and find it boring. With this information, ask a better question.
  16. I am with Penny... wait for the new Bento mesh heads to come out. A few alpha/beta versions are already out. You can get them at discount for purchasing early. So... you might want to skip the wait and purchase early. But, that has its risks aand other maybe better heads will come out. You also need a Bento capable viewer to use them. You'll find the viewer in Alternate Viewers. You'll probably want to know what we are talking about and why Bento heads (and hands) are better, I suggest seeing video from these channels: Mine: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB4WLXGM10aLOxbw01-e5LQ Strawberry's: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE6xvjkOu6wE-wJ-7-1x5bw Catwa: https://www.youtube.com/user/caatwa KaoZ Koba: https://www.youtube.com/user/kaozapple You can jump to the blogs to get more information.
  17. I assume you are looking for specific information on how to set up a special login path for your people. The Lab has gateways. The Firestorm Team has one. You can explore how it works. The idea is they (FS Team) have a web site that deleivers their users to a signup page that gets them registed and then delievers them to a FS Region. I think it also adds them to a special group. Only memebers of that group have access to the region... or at least access can be restricted to those members. I suggest you contact Jessica Lyon or Ed Merryman to get information on their experience with the gateways. Setting up such a gateway requires coordination and approval with/by the Lab. See: http://www.firestormviewer.org/tag/firestorm-community-gateway/ The Lab's official page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Gateway_Criteria The Lab's page includes instructions on applying for a gateway.
  18. There are no easy answers on what is best. But, we can give you some simple advice. To learn about hardware in relation to Second Life see: http://blog.nalates.net/category/hardware/ The SL viewer is not old software... parts of it are. But many parts have been updated to state of the art. The combination of server and viewer has some lagacy issues that date it. But, those are being addressed. The problem that makes Second Life a challenging computer task is the user created content. If we had the professionally optimized content of Grand Theft Auto, Obduction, and other games SL would way out perform them. The Lab and the software that makes up Second Life can't compensate for what users upload. To get the best computer go for one with 4 FAST cores. Core speed improves performance more than numerous cores. In general the Intel i5 5th gen CPU is the all around best performer for the dollar. Memory is another big contributor to performance. Get FAST memory and at least 16GB of RAM. 8GB will do, but, you will crash as the SL and Firestorm viewer eat memory. With 16GB or more you will crash way less. Data storage is another performance consideration. Faster is better. Going with a RAM drive is the current the best solution for performance per dollar. The Solid State Drives that can match RAM Drive performance are still WAY WAY too expensive. Affordable SSD with great performance are 1 to 2 years away. See: Hardware: Data Storage – What is the Best Buy? Graphics cards are another big performance factor. NVIDIA is the answer for Second Life. There are some that will argue for AMD. But, read the forum here and decide. Starting with NVIDIA's 1000 series cards there is a duel image processing feature for VR. So, if you are going there, VR there, the 1000 series is the choice. The new 1000's are priced lower than new 900 cards. But, you can get 900 series cards on eBay for quite a bit less than a 10xx. A 970 or 980 is great for SL as it is today. A 1000 is needed for the future. But, video cards are easy to update/replace... provided you are not buying a laptop... The xx60 NVIDIA cards or better is what you need. the xx20, xx40, are usable but, you need more and the cost isn't that much more. Check prices on eBay before you buy anything anywhere.

Rolig's is the best fix to try first. When you ask a tech question like yours include information about your computer and viewer. Before or after login click HELP->ABOUT... and copy the information the viewer provides. Paste it with your question. While the maintenance viewer is your best bet, that thought is based on a lack of real information. So, don't be surprised if it isn't a fix.
  20. Just to be different from Rolig... http://search.secondlife.com/?query_term=biobreeds&collection_chosen=all&sort=&isLeftColOpen=true
  21. Feature requests, bug reports, and suggestions go here: https://jira.secondlife.com/secure/Dashboard.jspa
  22. There are a number of things that can cause the problem. Most are beyond your control. You can restart your computer, router, and/or gateway. After that you'll need to complain to your ISP. I have an article on troubleshooting your connection to SL. http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ Now that a buruaecratic organization, made up mostly of anti-free speech countries, controls the Internet expect more problems. http://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2016/10/31/the-dyn-ddos-attack-and-the-changing-balance-of-online-cyber-power/#77cb3088e230
  23. The answers are right but a bit imprecise. There is no limit on your invenotry. I know people with well over 100k items. But, there is a rather ambigious limit on the number of items you can have in a folder. Generally we say the limit is 5,000 items per folder. On a good connection you may get away with 10,000 items per folder. With a poor connection it may be <5,000. A folder is an item too. I could have 1,000 folders each with a thousand folders that each have a 1,000 items... giving me an inventory with a billion items. I suspect it would greatly increase my login time. But, it would probably load. Support can fix an inventory that is a problem because of too many items in a folder. A trouble ticket has to be filed with support asking they "unflatten' your inventory. Putting everything in a single or few folders is a "flat' inventory.
  24. Rolig is right. You posted at 1PM and the rollout was complete 3+ hours earlier. It does take the system some time to recover from the restart. But, the Lindens have done a lot of work to minimize the problems. So, most are invisibel even during the roll, provided you are not on a region as it is restarting. Within an hour the system should have completely recovered. But, there are regions that hang or fail to correctly connect to some system services and have to be restarted a second time. So, use the Destination Guide to pick a place and try logging into different location.
