  1. It is a pain to get SL running on Linux. Go tot he Alternate Third Party Viewers page and get a third party Linux Viewer. Then find the in-world Linux groups and ask there for help. And as Alwin said, search the forum. See: Second Life Losing the Linux Viewer?
  2. Rolig is giving you her best guesses because you didn't give us enough information to know what might be wrong. When you ask a tech question open the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... and include that information with your your question. What HUD? All HUD's? Just the one? Are you in a region that allows you to use scripts? Most HUD's are for a specific item. Are you using the correct HUD with the correrect item?
  3. From the Maitreya people. The Maitreya body is a properitary item NOT owned by the Lab.
  4. The Lindex is very much a RL currency exchange. So, everything is dependent on what people do, not a computer. Further down the page is a list of pending orders. At the top of the Buy column is the amout and price of Buy orders waiting on a seller. The left column has seller offers waiting for a buyer, someone to take their sell offer. For an instant exchange use the seller price. The Lindex "Instant" uses recent performance to predict a price that is likely to result in a transaction in the next couple of minutes. If you want a good price quickly, look at the Buy offers. If you pick the price at the top of the cloumn, you will be waiting along with all the people making Buy offers at that price. It is first come first served. If you are in a hurry, you can move to the front of the line by offerring L$1 more* than the current best buy offier. As a buyer you are setting the cost of a US$1. Fewer L$ means a lower price for the L$ Seller/US$ Buyer. *Note: more and less depend on how you look at the transaction. Whether the number needs to be smaller or larger to be more or less also depends on how you look at it. See: Misunderstanding the Second Life Lindex
  5. Alwin gave you a link to a good troubleshooting page. Your problem is called bake fail. This happens when the viewer cannot figure outt how to render some part of the avatar. If you cannot replace your outfit with another one, there is likely a connection issue. Having a good Internet connection does NOT mean you have a good connection to the SL servers. Test it. http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ But, it may also indicate a problem with the Current Outfit Folder or invenotry in general. The quick fix is to change to the Test Male/Female avatar. Develop->Avatar->Character Tests->Test Male/Female. If there is no DEVELOP in the top menu, press Ctrl-Alt-Q. After the avatar renders then return to your regular avatar. If the problem repeats, switch to the Test Male/Female and restore your appearance one item at a time. You'll find the problem item.
  6. There are a bunch of weapons systems in SL. Some are free and work with various weapons. I doubt there is one that works with all weapons. There is the built-in SL damage system. See: Weapons in Second Life. This system depends on the region owner having the damage feature enabled. There is a list of combat systems. I think it is a bit out dated. But, there are a few recent updates. See: Combat. In the marketplace you’ll find free and cheap systems here. There are more complex systems and DIY systems. Getting specific recommendations in the Answers section is hard. You would do well to post in the SL Forum. You'll need to be more specific and explain the scenario the meter/script will be used in.
  7. Use OPTIONS in the upper right of your post to edit it. You haven't told us enough to let us figure out what the problem is. Generally, when asking a tech question, click the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... before or after login. Copy-paste that info into your post.
  8. You probably failed to assign all vertices weight to a bone. Or you assigned weights from more than 4 bones.
  9. You haven't given us much to go on. Open the viewer and before or after login click HELP->ABOUT... and copy that info and paste it into your post. Use OPTIONS in the uppper right to edit the post. In the upper right of the Linden Viewer is a sound icon. Hover the cursor over it and drop down appears. There are sliders for Main, Ambient, and other sound channels. Those should all be at about the 50% point. I assume you have the Linden Viewer installed. Install the Firestorm Viewer and see if it does the same thing. This will tell us if it is the viewer or your computer. If Firestorm does not have the noise, try uninstalling the Linden viewer and reinstall it. Whenever you are having problems and installing software in a troubleshooting process turn off the anti-virus during the install
  10. Have you set your ACI to UNLIMITED? If so, turn it down to 350k. At UNLIMITED you can be taken down by some older graphics crashers. I am running a 1060 on version 372.70 without problems.(21.21.13.7270)
  11. Switch to the test avatar as soon as you login. Develop->Avatar->Character Tests->Test Male/Female. If there is no DEVELOP in the top menu, press Ctrl-Alt-Q. You can restore your appearance item by item. If it is something you normally wear, you'll find it. Are you logging into the same place every time? Have you tried a different place? When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. Use the Viewer's HELP->ABOUT... to collect the information and post it with your question. Use OPTIONS in the upper right of your post to edit the post. You can look in the viewer's log to find what is crashing your viewer. C:\Users\[Win_login_ID]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\logs\secondlife.log
  12. What are the mesh items? Where can we see them? Is this mesh you made or someone else? Could these mesh items have been uploaded with reversed LoD's? Meaning the small poly model loaded as LoD 1 and the high-poly models as LoD 4.
  13. There are several pssible problems. http://gizmodo.com/this-is-probably-why-half-the-internet-shut-down-today-1788062835 Avoid using Last Location and Home as login locations. Use Morris or Ahern. There is a core of regions used by the Lindens for their testing. Those regions are usually up but, not always. Other regions come and go as needed by Lindens for testing. If a region is taken down on Friday, it may not return until Monday. Regions can disappear for long periods. So, try other regions. While the system is SUPPOSED to log you into a live region if your target regions is down, that doesn't work all that well on ADITI.
  14. There are common challenges when logging into ADITI. If you changed your password, you will probably have to connect support and have them make sure the update propagated to ADITI. And you can try logging in with your old password. If this is your first log into ADITI, you will likely need Support's help. If you are using Last Location or Home, you will likely have problems. Pick a destination to log into that is in the known realm of Linden Core Servers; Morris and Ahren are two that meet that criteria.
  15. When you are stuck in place and can only turn it ususally means you have a bad connection to the SL servers. A good Internet connection does NOT mean a good connection to the SL servers. The viewer can rotate your view without talking to the server. To move requires communication with the server. Press Ctrl or Command-Shift-1 to open (and close) the Viewer Statistics panel. Look for PING. It should be <250ms. You can live with >250 and <500. Over 500 problems show up. You can track down connection issues with this information: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/
  16. What you are trying to do is change avatars or change appearance. In both cases there are avatars and outfits in your Inventory. You can Replace your avatar/outfit. Righr or double click an avatar or outfit to wear it. See: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Controlling-your-avatar-s-appearance/ta-p/700709
  17. You ALWAYS need to give lots of details about the computer and viewer you are using. We are guessing as to what may be the problem. Narrow the field and save us and you some t ime. Water in the keyboard is a problem. How you dried and when you tried to use it after the spill are both huge factors. The keyboard is made in layers. If a lot of water got in the keyboard it may take days to dry out. It may have also carried debris into the layers and the debris may keep the keyboard from ever working correctly. If it was coffe or tea... they are going to leave a resideue and ruine the keyboard. If you are on a laptop, the problems can be worse. The water, coffe, and debris can get down into the rest of the electronics and cause problems. Fortunately, whether desltop or laptop the keyboard can be changed out. They are cheap. So, cheap it is seldom worth the time to clean and repair a keyboard. You can look up the disassembly video for your laptop. Just Google 'disassembly' and your model and brand laptop. Watch that and decide if that is within you DIY skills. You can get parts from eBay..
  18. See if this helps: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Opening-boxes/ta-p/700185 When you ask a tech question you need to give us lots of DETAILs. It is always a good idea to click the viewer's HELP->ABOUT and copy-paste that information along with your question. Otherwise we are guessing and you spend time with our bad guesses.
  19. Everything in SL is mesh... on a technical level. Press Ctrl-Shift-R to see the wirefrme view. Press again to return to rendered view. In SL jargon we use the term mesh to mean an object for which we uploaded a list of vertices. Otherwise it is a Primitive (Prim), an object that has its list of vertices built into the viewer, i.e., cube, cone, sphere, etc. Sculpties are like mesh but, we use a texture to containt the list of vertices. Hair can be made from any of these plus the avatar has built-in hair which almost no one uses. Prim hair can be flexible. Some hair is a mix of basic types; prim, mesh - rigged or fitted. Mesh hair is shaped in Blender or 3D Max or Maya or ... Mesh hair is like most attachments. It can be moved, rotated, and positioned on the avatar. It can also be sized, larger, smaller. We can't change the basic shape inside SL. Rigged hair was the first mesh hair that moved with the avatar in a flexible way. Hair drapped over a shoulder does not pass through the shoulder when the head turns. But, it cannot be sized, rotated, or repositioined. Fitted hair is like rigged but, it is 'rigged' to a set of bones that respond to the shape sliders. So, if hair drapes over a woman's breast, when the slider makes the breasts bigger, instread of the breast poking through the hair, as it would with Mesh or Rigged, the hair moves out with the breast. Mesh, Rigged, and Fitted all have advantages and disadvantages. So, there is no "best". However, Fitted is the latest addition to our list of objects. To know which is best... try the demo and see how it works. With hair I don't care much whether it is Rigged or Fitted. I care how it looks when I move and if it fits.
  20. Rolig provided the primary fixes and causes of bake fail. A quick first step is to switch to the Test Avatar. This removes any problem attachments and quickly tells you if it is the avatar-viewer or something outside the viewer. In the top menu click Develop->Avatar->Character Tests->Test Male/Female. If there is no DEVELOP in the top menu, press Ctrl-Alt-Q. You can then start with a item-by-item restore of your avatar. It happens that after a crash, the Current Outfit Folder (COF) may develop problems. Changing the avatar to Test Male/Female clears the folder and rebuilds the current outfit. If none of the steps in the Firestorm wiki solve the problem, check your connection to the SL servers: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ - - - Remember. A good Internet connection does NOT gurantee a good connection to the SL servers.
  21. You haven't given us enough information to give a solid, precise answer. So, I'll ramble... Open the viewer and before or after login click HELP->ABOUT... Copy-paste that information into your post and any time you ask a tech question. Give us that info as a starting place. Save us all some time. If the viewer is NOT running and you go to http://secondlife.com/destination/2016-halloween-town there is a teleport button. Clicking that will pop a launch window, from there you can launch the viewer and you will log in at that location. I understand that works. Yes/no? If the viewer is already running, then repeating the above clicks should pop open the PLACES panel showing the destination and providing a Teleport button. I think you mean that is not happening. Yes/no? Do you have more than one viewer installed? If so and if the viewer you are using is not the last installed viewer, it will likely not work as you expect. If you have only ever had the Linden Viewer installed and you are using 'Willing to update to release candidates?' , you may have some install issues. Reinstall the viewer you want to work with web clicks. You can install over the existing install. No need to uninstall. Try it to see if it works after the reinstall. There is also the problem of your Internet browser deciding to use a specific viewer for SLURL's (Internet Protocols). You can get the program URLProtocolView (free) and enable/disable various protocols. Expand the columns so you can see the protocol handlers. Find the SECONDLIFE handler and see which viewer it is trying to use. You can't change it, but you can disable and the the browser will reinstall a handler. Long ago this SLURL thing was more of a problem. The fix for those problems is here. This explains how to fix how SLURL's work in Windows. It gets geeky.
  22. Finding tutorials specific to Blender for Second Life is more difficult than just general Blender. But, there are plenty of SL specific tutorials. Gaia and Medhue make what I consider the best. Gaia Clary YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw9ksUgt_eP4jofUZL0677Q Machiniimatrix http://blog.machinimatrix.org/ Medhue YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpv1Jz7cqCHvDJiBqULE4vA YouTube SL Animation Tutorials https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=EgIIBQ%253D%253D&q=second+life+animation+tutorial Go through Gaia’s first. She also has pay-to-see tutorials. But, lots of free ones too. Notice I use the date-filter to select the most recent tutorials. The general tutorials are less about SL specifics and more about Blender.
  23. Running Second Life is not like most other software. SL is very demanding of the hardware. While most other games have some simple settings like low, medium, and high, SL has settings that have settings... The hardware requirements for good performance are complex. The minmium System Requirements the Lab lists are not going to give you a good experience. There is a lot of discussion in the forum about what hardware is best and/or just adequite. In general a second gen i3 3.5GHz CPU, NVIDIA 760, and 32 GB of ram with a 64-bit OS is about the minimum for a machine that can give an enjoyable experience. Of course everyone has their idea of what is enjoyable. I have a section of my blog: Hardware. It deals with hardware from a Second Life user's perspective.
  24. We are assuming you are using the Linden default viewer. When you ask a tech question click the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... and copy paste that info in with your post. There are a number of things that can cause this. Without more info all we can do is guess. You them get to try all our guess, good or bad. If you are on an old 32-bit OS and have other programs running, you are very likely to crash when you try to upload a large texture. You didn't give us a size... or tell us how much RAM your system has. I've forgotten how dependent the upload is or isn't on your video driver. Not knowing which video card you are using, its not possible to know if you need upgrade or roll back your graphics driver. You can try the Maintenance RC Viewer. It has a lot of fixes in it.
