I keep getting a " not responding" or "You've been logged out of second life. this region may be experiencing trouble. please check your conntection to the internet." I'm getting angry now! Hello, Jules It sounds like you might be losing your connection while your main avatar's information is loading. Check your internet connection. Main avatars usually have far bigger inventories to load than alts. I suggest you clear your cache, and the next time you attempt to log in on your main account, please change the login start location to Furball (an empty water sim belonging to Governor Linden) and see if you have better luck logging in.
  2. I recognise a couple of the names on that list as being alts of Linden ex-employees. They still log in occasionally. I don't know if its against the ToS to say that, but I'm not naming names so I guess its ok. (One did announce her alt name at her leaving party when she left, so its not a secret anyway.)
  3. There were surnames that were names of famous actors: Laughton Colman used in early 2006 There is someone with surname of Kuhr dating to July 2005 still active in SL. Linden and Sunshine of course from the very beginning, and also there is a Gullwing that I know of from 2004

  8. To Sephina and to beethros also, thank you for enjoying my review. It was a little rushed as I was in the middle of cooking dinner, but I hope it evoked good memories for other people too. As I was cooking, I continued to think about the best and worst aspects of Second Life for me. So many, too many. Naked motorcycling with my good friend Fi and sailing with Pat both made me feel so free, so fresh, so clean (and ultimately so motion sick). Dance/camping in my early days at Boonootoo sim, which I revisited last week, five years after I had last been there. Of course, I did not recognise the place at all. The land where I had danced and met some earlier friends was now a parcel of abandoned land, and I felt tremendously sad, which is a little crazy, to be sad for something that never really existed. Finding my first home at Missing Beckett (although I cannot remember how I first came to be there), in early December 2007, falling in love with a large cat-shaped sofa that was on a verandah of a house there, the sofa having become now my desert island cannot-live-without item (I wish I could have one in real life too), being shocked to see children in Second Life, that actually just turned out to be child avatars, ditto furries and avatars that could turn into cars and back into people instantly. The novelty of rain and thunder and lightening in Second Life. Halloween is always exceptional fun. Burning Life. Interactive art exhibitions (strangely, I am not all that interested in art in real life, but Bryn Oh - and I am sure she will not mind me mentioning her - has this ability to make me smell places from my own childhood when I look at her creations). Dancing on The Titanic at sunset, and pretending to fly at the front of the vessel with my own Leonardo diCaprio, ghost hunting, driverless vehicles, secret underwater worlds, skyboxes, AI bots, landbots, other assorted bots and grid clutter that leaves us wondering why. I love it all. David Icke in real life believes that all of what we see in real life is just a Hologram. Second Life would blow his mind completely.
  9. My Review of Second Life I don't use Second Life to alleviate boredom (what on earth is boredom?), or to pass time, or to kill time. Second Life is just another place I visit from time to time, when I have the time, or can make the time, and no two days are the same. The first two weeks of being in Second Life were the hardest for me, because I found it to be a very steep learning curve, but what got me through was the friendships I forged with newbies like I was back then, and the kindness of oldbies who were patient enough to show me the ropes, and who pointed me in the direction of Torley Linden's great and often amusing video tutorials. I went through phases, like many people did: falling in love, spending beyond my means, becoming a shopaholic for a short while. I dabbled in land dealing, tried to breed chickens (with the result of far too many green ones being born and the heartbreak of having to cull 50 at a time), even was a columnist for an SL 'newspaper' for a short time in 2008. Once I came first in the Giant Snail Racing, even appearing on Treet TV with my massive snail arse slithering out of control over a sim crossing at one point. Where in real life could you have such surreal psychedelic adventures? And so much better, no hangover, like you get with illegal substances. The decision to become a premium member was a good one for me. Paying quarterly, and getting a weekly stipend, and now spending very little inworld, it costs me a few English pence every week, less than the cost of one of my other compulsive purchases, magazines (oh how I love flipping through the pages of a brand new magazine, feeling the glossy inky paper underneath my fingers, smelling the shiny.... ...... but back to the review. So many places to visit in Second Life, so many creative people to feed my sluggish brain with beautiful images that give me the craziest dreams, so many people to watch and interact with. I tried to bring a couple of real life friends into Second Life in my early days. They did not take to it. Found it too complicated. And now I am not sorry. Second Life feels like my box of chocolates, for me only to open the lid of and peer into and make my selection, and then have some brand new soft centre thrown at me every time I log in. The only downside for me has been my own inability to cope well with change. I don't change my style of handbag in Second Life, I stick to the same style of shoes for comfort and ease. Second Life is my leisure and my pleasure, and I don't like feeling inept all over again having to learn how to use new viewers, but over time even this is getting to be second nature to me, and I find I even wear mesh (friends of mine are dropping dead from the shock of that statement I am sure). The point about the avatar, hmmm, I kind of like how I look, but would like a less stern expression and the smile you can get to be more sincere. I look my best when my tongue is sticking out (I have been told). I don't look at my feet, and I hate the separate fake feet you can get, although one of my alts loves anything fake, and her fake feet look ok... on her. Its not a comprehensive review, my thoughts are all over the place, five years worth of memories, fun times, disastrous encounters sometimes that I can smile about now, and, I am sure, much much more to look forward to in the future.

Now THAT leaves me speechless...not that I don't agree with it, but that LL is actually doing this!!! https://secondlife.com/my/support/incident-reports.php That is awesome! All in all it does not look like a lot of reports per day. Very interesting to see that on the current list the longest suspension was for failing to comply with a DCMA notification. That should make the Merchants happy. It would be interesting to know how many were simply, "no violation, case closed." My take still is from what I have read and heard over the years that people apply the term Griefing too liberally. In SL it has a specific defined meaning. Being annoying, rude, crude or even under some circumstances obscene is not in and of it self "Griefing." I may not agree with the behaviour but that does not make it griefing. I might be taking it slightly out of context, but Torley said a few years ago: "It is a difficult thing that, while life in general appeals to a diversity of people, many people's interests are in conflict. This is also true in Second Life." Now I am not applying this to Greek's urinating incident. But from the many things I have heard people refer to as Griefing, the vast majority has simply been nothing more or less than conflicts of interest. I have mixed feelings about the urinating incident. Crude and rude, absolutely. At its very best poor judgement in humour. Whether or not it can be defined as Griefing, I really don't know. I will totally agree with Heart Brimmer, the SIM or Club owner should have been informed. It would be their right to decide if this type of behaviour should be allowed in their place. If the SIM or Club owner chose to allow it, I don't think it could then be defined as Griefing. Yes, context is always key. I'm wondering how old this avatar was who was urinating all over everyone. The sim owner should definitely be putting on their land the ability to restrict brand new avatars, that would wee(d) (sorry!) out the alt griefers somewhat. I once had a 'courting couple' enter my house without my permission while I was in, and while that in itself is rude, it's not in my book griefing, even though they were nude and both covered in flexicum and I lived on a G-rated sim. Perhaps I should have spoken to them, or even submitted an AR about them, but I just wanted to enjoy my SL, and I chose to eject and ban them from my land, mute them, and that took less than 30 seconds, and to me they just didn't exist any more. Going back to the Incident Report. In the old days when confirmation emails were sent out to acknowledge a person had submitted an AR, they used to have a reference number. If a bunch of us submitted abuse reports over self-replicating griefing items that were bringing a sim performance down, there might have been five of us, but the reference numbers we were given could be spaced as many as 50 in 10 minutes. I don't think LL have enough staff in the office that deals with ARs to actually act on 50 individual ARs in 10 minutes, and I would guess that is why it appears that sometimes ARs are not acted upon (even though when you submit an AR with the Firestorm viewer, an assurance is given in a pop-up box that all ARs are dealt with and actioned.

I have saved this in my favorites, it might just make for an interesting read for when I'm bored. lol. I agree Czari, they are actually doing this!!! Excellent! Thanks for letting us know, Czari, that they;'ve reinstated the Incident Reports. I actually am fully in favour of them naming names (and some of the names halfway down that first page look particularly 'fruity'), although I think that LL might rethink that aspect, as some people will wear it as a badge of honour, like being banished to The Cornfield became years ago. Its been added to my Favourites too.
  12. Welcome to Second Life Answers, GypC Second Life is already compatible with Windows 8, or at least the Firestorm viewer is. Have you tried accessing Second Life with the Firestorm viewer? When you say "... now Second Life won't work", what happens when you attempt to log into Second Life? Do you get any message up on your screen, for example? Presumably the computer you are using that originally had Windows 7 is the one you are using now with Windows 8, so there haven't been any other changes such as graphics card? You can add more information to this thread by clicking on "options" at the top right hand corner of your original post and "edit".
  13. Being urinated on is never a pleasant experience, unless a person is into that kind of thing, of course, and I take it you weren't on that type of sim! If everyone submits an abuse report against someone who acts in such a disrespectful manner, then I am sure LL will act on it, BUT this will not take precedence over abuse reports that are already being acted on which have to take priority, ie those where servers are being put at risk, or if there is possible incidences against minors, or gambling. Linden Lab will expect people to be able to, in the meantime, mute/block and generally ignore the individual doing the griefing, which I know is not always easy, especially to those of a particularly sensitive nature or to new people who can be rather taken aback by such lewd crude activity. However, if no one responded to griefers, if everyone just ignored them, they would go away permanently once they got bored. They only return because they can, because everyone shrieks at them, threatens to AR them, and basically feeds them with the attention they are seeking. Even if you feel that Linden Lab are not going to act, you and others MUST continue to submit abuse reports, otherwise Linden Lab will definitely not act, because they will not know about the incidents that are occurring within world. I am sorry I cannot offer you anything more appeasing than this advice, but please be grateful that this is only happening in a virtual world, and imagine how much awful it would be if someone were going around in real life urinating all over everyone.
  14. No wonder your photos are often used for the Second Life website home page. The enlarged rain drops somehow seem to be symbolic of tears; and the little stuffed animal tucked underneath the girl's arm suggests maybe she is heading out from home to start a new office job in the world of grown-ups. A very atmospheric and thought-provoking photo.
  15. Can you upload a photo to your post please, so we can take a look at the problem.

I've been helped by so many fabulous people on these forums, and I love it when people pay it forward, go from being newbie to helping out themselves. Isn't this how an ideal world should function (RL too?) valerie, however, does get my vote - I have never known her to be unkind or vicious, and has a pure heart in RL for sure.

  19. Welcome to Second Life, and to Second Life Answers, naya2006 You should be standing in a place where there are arrows on the floor leading to different portals, offering you options. Walk towards one of the portals and you will be magically teleported to a new destination. I do suggest, though, that you read up on some basic "how to"s. Please take a look at this link, from the official Second Life Knowledge Base http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919

  21. Yes, the worrying part about ISPs is how much they appear to lie when giving information to their customers. I got fobbed off by mine, who said I had not enough available ram! That did not however tally, because I happened to acquire a brand new laptop, with 8Gb of ram, and still had exactly the same network problems. So I do agree with you about the naughty things ISPs get up to being rather a possibility in the case of our OP here. I don't venture into Thinkerer's website; I know other people are quite happy to do so, but I really do not think it is appropriate for people seeking help via the forums to be redirected to a third party website. It becomes like a treasure hunt, and sometimes the outside websites do contain some out-of-date information and misinformation. Here on the forums/Answers, I would hope the information given is as fresh and up-to-date as possible, and from our genuine first hand experience.
  22. Good luck to you, Laus. It will be most helpful if you do return to your thread and let us know of any developments. Just another point regarding internet services. I personally find my internet connection becomes very problematic at certain times of the day, because of the sheer number of other broadband users that share my branch of the service. Maybe this is what has happened. Anyway, by a process of elimination, I am sure you will be able to discover what exactly is ailing you at this point in time.
  23. Unfortunately, yes, once a griefer, always a griefer it seems. Some people do in fact just go on to create a new alt with the sole purpose of trying to undermine Linden Lab and the residents by finding parcels where there is no auto-return set and the process happens all over again. Always AR, you did the right thing.
  24. You've been inworld for quite a long time, I mean as a resident of Second Life. If you've always been using the same computer, and everything has been working pretty nicely so far, then as you say suddenly things won't load, it really does suggest perhaps internet service problems, which is what I would be inclined to check first. When you start tweaking things like LOD, removing odd files here and there, it can start to feel like there's a kitten in the room with a ball of wool. It becomes further entangled. So, in lieu of further information from you about your computer's specifications and set-up, in your shoes I would start by checking internet connection. If internet connection is stable and of good speed, I would then go on to check graphics card drivers are up-to-date. Also some computer maintenance might be in order - it might (might) just be your hard drive is getting very full after all these years. Remove any unnecessary programs that you no longer use. Save videos, photographs, valuable data onto separate media storage (DVDs/USBs/ external hard drive), carry out a disk cleanup and then a defragment.
  25. Hello, Laus It's a little unclear what your problem might be, but have you checked to see if you need to update the drivers for your graphics card? Also, check your internet connection.
