  1. It's frustrating for sure when unscheduled maintenance takes place, and last night was particularly bad, with five hours offline at least for some people. Occasionally Linden employees do look in and respond here on the forums, but generally it is a resident to resident area. I think yesterday's unscheduled maintenance was over a security issue, rather than because of general updating to work on the new Shining project. This will be carried out more than likely during the regular Tuesday deploys. (And who would really choose to work on a Friday evening, so close to the weekend? I'm guessing the Linden folk who had to were not too pleased themselves; Support would have been inundated with enquiries from irate residents wanting to know why their sims were not coming back up straightaway.) I blame the cleaners. They plug in their vacuum cleaners and floor polishing machines without a care, not knowing that those big machines all lined up are actually servers and not just funny-looking refrigerators!
  2. TimberHoffit wrote: A guy from Mediacom came out, checked the speed on HIS little computer, and found out that it's just my computer that has the crummy download speeds, which is why only Second Life is acting up. Other games I play don't really rely on those factors. I've tried everything, though, to see what could be wrong with my computer but I find nothing, and nothing I do resolves the problem. My computer is working fine, it's JUST Second Life! It sounds to me like Mediacom is crummy, if you could run Second Life before without such problems. Second Life is not a game, in the same sense of the word as the other games you play online, it is far heavier on resources, and one resource you really need to have a half-decent session in SL is a decent connection. I've had the runaround with Virgin here in the UK, and, rather amazingly, since I complained and they assured me it was because I had not sufficient RAM on my computer (!), my internet connection has been smoother, and Second Life has run adequately well. Odd that! Edited to add: if you're accessing Second Life wirelessly, just don't. That's just asking for extra problems.
  3. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Avtaar. It might help you to check if the drivers for your graphics card are up to date (by going to the website for your own graphics card manufacturer - driver downloads are free). It would also be useful to see your computer's specifications. You can add them to this thread by clicking on "options" at the top right hand corner of your original post and "edit".
  4. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Britta I'm afraid we're all responsible for making a note of which email address we've registered our avatars/alts to, and depending on what is saved to your own system, you may have to dig deep to find what you're looking for. If you know the names of your alts, of course, you can log in as them, and see which email address is registered, either on the website account details for each one, or inworld by opting to send a snapshot (the registered address for each avatar comes up on the snapshot screen.
  5. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Sinisterr It sounds like a temporary interruption in your internet connection has caused this on this occasion. To fix, I think a rebake won't work, but if you haven't already tried it, please press "ctrl" "alt" "R" at the same time. If that fails, try changing your group tag and waiting for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, try sliding a bald base over to your avatar from your inventory. Failing all else, do a character test (option for this to be found in Advanced menu at top of your viewer screen). This will take your avatar back to it's factory settings, and should also force your inventory to fully load. Then you can just slide your favourite shape, skin, hair, clothing and HUDs across to your avatar once again.
  6. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Shyfangs Your avatar isn't bugged, but it is certainly being bugged by something you have left behind at that particular location of Kincora 128,49,39. It's easy to fix. Just return to that location, find the object, and delete it. It will then be quiet. Also, the other five bullet need derezzing/deleting, that I flew into (marvellous effect it was, but landowner might not be so impressed if they get here before you do!). Here's the SLurl you need. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kincora/138/47/42
  7. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Debz When I'm in a lazy mood, I click on the start button on my computer, and type into the search box "marigold_devin", which brings up all my chat and IM logs pertaining to this avatar. (Relates to Windows Vista operating system. Obviously I don't know what you're on.)
  8. Welcome to Second Life Answers, kenny Second Life is surely full of strange little quirks. I have stood in busy music venues where half the people have complained of no music, but the other half have been getting music, and yet these same people who have no music in the busy venue can hear media playing in their own home. I do not know for sure, but it could be caused by something as simple as the amount of lag blocking the stream for you - it would be interesting (but rather an impossible task I think) - if everybody registered their system specifications, and the problems, and their possible causes could be rooted out by being able to see the common denominator. Bandwith springs to mind mainly, though, from what you're describing. If you are in a venue with other people, and everything is transmitting across from the servers to your own computer, maybe music is the last thing to come across, and it just doesn't quite have enough bandwith to do so. I am speculating, though, and others will be along to add their opinions and experience too. You could try and work out if there are any patterns - note down where you get music, where you don't, type of sim, number of avatars at each, I don't know how much benefit you would get from tweaking your bandwith.
  9. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Yuki It could be a number of things that cause this. Does it only happen on one particular sim, or does it happen anywhere you are in SL? Can you also please add your system details/specifications to try and determine if it is more likely to be an SL server/sim or PC/computer issue. You can add more information to this thread by clicking on "options" at the top right hand corner and "edit".
  10. Lydia Craig wrote: Heaven forbid that it is the SL program that may be bugged or much less the core server, that simply will not do, and the slightest suggestion that this must be the case will drive the Spin Police crazy as we have seen. At the moment Sl is having problems and they may well be effecting logins and causing all kinds of misleading log in messages to be sent out, they also seem to be effecting ports and the map as well as possibly search on SL viewer and its clones, ie third party viewers. It would be much more productive if LL would admit these problems and stop the game of blaming connections, our computers and now our graphics cards, but that is not likely to happen and the result will be more and more player distrust and more and more migrations out of SL, and in the end Linden Labs will have no one to blame but themselves. Ah, but what if the 'Spin Police' all join the Bitter Brigade and then how quickly will the residents seeking practical help run out of the doors and off to WoW etc? SL is being flakey enough to warrant emergency deploys in this moment, with some sims unlikely to be brought back to life for five hours. Oh hell, the sky is falling in, the sky is falling in. And yet, strangely, I have been managing to teleport around the mainland for the past four hours with only one sudden log out, and one "unable to teleport" message. Second Life is not perfect. It's never going to be. Real life isn't perfect. It's never going to be. It's all evolutionary. If you feel so much contempt against LL and the 'Spin Police' (whoever they may be), why are you still persevering with it? Maybe misery does love company after all.
  11. No. Many people access Second Life while they are away on business trips, or over at the homes of friends.
  12. If I was offended, I'd AR, but Amethyst is right, LL do have to approve the sim names. Reminds me of some places in RL. I doubt LL would allow me to set up a sim with this name though, even if I lived there in RL and wanted to recreate it in SL.
  13. It would be really useful if you would post your computer's specifications to this thread. What happens exactly, ie do you get any message up on your screen as the viewer crashes? Which viewer are you using. Looking forward to receiving more information.
  14. When they offer me my award, I will surely send an alt in as a proxy to collect it. I'd be just to shy and modest to get up on the stage and receive it myself. I'm against the idea. That's my only thought. Edited to add: It would alienate more people than it would impress, it would, as Dilbert points out, cause certain negative issues (even these little photo contests that LL run on these forums have a large element of bitching and cheating going on).
  15. If someone is using a Display Name to harrass your wife, then your wife can submit an abuse report inworld by clicking on the "Help" at the top of the viewer screen and "report abuse". If it is just a case of someone having the same Display Name, then please put it down to a coincidence. After all, look how many David Jones or John Smith named people there are in the United Kingdom.
  16. Hello, Illyriana, I am sorry I am unable to help you with this problem, as I do not know why you are not able to view mesh currently. Could you please change the colour of your original post to black, or a dark colour. It is not very easy to read, and this may be discouraging people from responding. I am sure other people will then come along and advise you how to get mesh working again. Can you please also add to your thread to tell us which viewer you are actually using. Many thanks.
  17. I've never known LL terminate a delinquent account, but an account that has been suspended for a late payment that remains unpaid just doesn't get reinstated until/unless payment is made. I don't know how this affects the inventory though, whether it is all kept forever, or whether the account becomes like an account that has been deleted by the resident themselves, for whom the inventory becomes irretrievable after a couple of months.
  18. Your payments for Premium Membership will be automatically taken from your account monthly, if you have elected to pay monthly. Linden Lab do usually send out an email to remind you that your Premium Membership is coming up for renewal on a particular date, but as emails can land up in a black hole somewhere, it's always wise to just know that you have to pay until/unless you opt to cancel your Premium Membership. As Charolotte says, if you have insufficient funds in the account you registered with LL from where they will take payments, you do get reminders, but run the risk of having your account suspended until payment is made. However, you would still be able to access Second Life on an alternative avatar account, although that would be treated as a wholly separate entity to your main avatar's account, with unconnected inventory/friends lists/etc.
  19. Tenly wrote: its not just clothing textures. the skin is all bad looking now. Im not having this problem with any grid except SL. Thanks for providing the photo. I never looked at my own armpit up that close before. Comparing the above with my avatar's armpit, I clearly see the difference. Theresa's advice looks worth a try. Please let us know what fixes this problem for you.
  20. MoiselleErin Teardrop wrote: My GPU and basically my whole computer is less powerful than the OP's yet I don't crash any more than anyone else. For the OP - maybe try different viewers? Unless youREALLY want to see mesh crap, you don't need V3. Some might say, "But V1 and V2 are going to be phased out". Sure they are, that is why I still use V1 almost 3 years after it was to be "phased out". I absolutely agree with all of this. Mesh may well be here, but why make life harder for ourselves until/unless we absolutely have to!
  21. We still don't know what sort of graphics card you've got Cindy. This would give a further clue to your problem I think.
  22. Welcome to Second Life Answers, Mikey Freezing then crashing can be a sign of an interruption in your connection. However, you can get more of a clue if you select to "view consoles" from the Advanced menu at top of screen. You have to relog for the second (console) window to show up though, and when you next freeze up, look at the console window and you'll see if it's your connection not responding, or you might get another clue as to what is causing your problem. It could be because of the deploys that took place this week, although I have spent several consecutive hours inworld and not had first hand experience of this happening. You're not using wireless are you?
  23. Someone else with a similar issue to yourself - more and more I believe it is a problem with your graphics card http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Second-Life-Viewer/viewer-issues/m-p/1621555/highlight/false#M15534 There will probably be some answers come up on the other thread that will apply to your current problem too, so I'd advise you keep an eye on that one as well as your own.
  24. Welcome to Second Life Answers, fluffyevilbunny You might have answered your own question there :catsad: For now you could try updating the graphics card drivers on the machine you are using, but if it's sooo old, and not at even minimum specs, you might not be able to access SL with all the full graphics. However, if it's just for chit chat and socialising, you can still access Second Life via one of the approved third party lite/text-only clients. For information about minimum specifications required look here please ... https://secondlife.com/my/support/system-requirements/index.php? For further information about third party viewers go here ... http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory
