  1. I've never come across vote boxes that pay out L$ in all my years in SL ! Logging in alts to go and collect L$1 or L$2 per go by clicking on voteboxes seems like a lot of virtual work for a very small amount of virtual money! What I'd like is a vote box that automatically collects money from people who click on it - now that would be fun
  2. I'm sure it says somewhere that Second Life would continue alongside the proposed new world.. Anyway, if the new world is much better than SL, then most people will migrate to it over a period of time.
  3. I think LL working on a new and better virtual world is a good thing as long as it allows the same level of creativity, or perhaps even more, as in SL. I'm wondering how Philip Rosedale's independent High Fidelity project might fit in with the new LL world. But it's important that the existing SL would not only be retained and supported, but also continue to be enhanced until such time as either everyone has migrated to the new world or, by some as yet undicovered electronic miracle, it could be seamlessly converted into part of the proposed new world!:matte-motes-big-grin:

A agree with the post above - don't pay anyone to teach you to build, there's loads of free help available at officially approved locations including the Ivory Tower Library where you can go to find out all about building - and I think some of the official info hub hangouts like NCI have instructional displays as well. Also if you type in Google 'how to build in Second Life' you'll see there are loads of tutorial videos that will teach you all you need to know about building the traditional SL way with primitives in-world. If you want to learn to build with mesh, that has to be done outside SL and then imported, so the amount of help an in-world teacher could give you would be quite limited anyway!
  5. Why not open a club playing that 'pagan musak' and see a) how many people come along and b) how many people keep coming back! I have heard 'music' a bit like that in some extreme industrial clubs. There used to be a place called Club Renoise that played estreme industrial. I can take hardbeat techno, hardstyle, boom-boom, hardhouse, bounce and all that, but pagan musak really does just sound like the kind of noise nobody would wat to listen to.
  6. My experience so far is that while some fitted mesh clothes have these long strands that look like sticky melted plastic, by far the worst offenders are the new mesh avatars, where this effect happens to the whole body and part of the legs. Either using full advanced graphics with shadows or disabling hardware skinning get rid of the problem, but give a slower frame rate.
  7. I followed some advice on this forum and it cured the problem. If your computer and internet are up to it, go into preferences - graphics - custom and set everything to maximum, including enabling shadows and ambient occlusion. Then the lines disappear. BUT....If your computer, like mine, isn't really up to using maximum graphics (except perhaps for making screenshots) the alternative is to simply uncheck 'hardware skinning' at the bottom of the same graphics drop-down.
  8. i can't imagine myself needing to belong to 42 groups. I sometimes ran up against the old limit of 25, but that was usually solved by leaving groups that I'd been invited to join by some DJ or other who I never met again! Perhaps the group limit could be rounded up to 50, to give a nice round number. I don't know if there are any performance issues for LL if they allow people to belong to 100 groups. It would enable a landowner to form 100 groups for 100 pieces of land they rent out, I suppose, but is that what groups were really intended for?
  9. I have won the occasional prize over the years but the contest scene shouldn't be taken too seriously. As others have said, some people make voting arrangements. I've even been instructed like "u vote me, I tell u vote me why u not say u vote me" sort of thing. :matte-motes-big-grin: Then, also well known that people TP alts in to vote for them - but of course it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that club owners can plant their own alts as a means of keeping the winnings. But even if people don't use alts or voting arrangements, there's still a big flaw in contests - if you want to win best in red, you're not helping your chances by voting for someone else you think is best in red, are you? :matte-motes-big-grin:
  10. So much wonderful stuff has been created in SL that we can become a little immune to the skill and creativity we see all around us all the time.
  11. I emphasise again - it would be much better to improve the existing system avatar mesh in such a way that texture layers still fit. Then there would be no need for fitted mesh avatars. If an improved 'system' avatar is developed, then it might be possible even to create more realistic obese avatars, with a slider setting for arm angle, so that hands don't disappear into hips.
  12. Here is one of the new mesh avatars, unadjusted, standing beside me.
  13. Also, related to this - if creators still want to pack their creations in a box, please make it just that - a 1 prim box! For those of us who own land but only keep a few prims spare, it's a nuisance to have to go to a sandbox to unpack a fancy mesh carrier bag with ribbons and flowers on just because it has too much land impact for our home!
  14. To clarify: It's OK to have more than one avatar account in SL, as long as you retain complete control of them all and don't let someone else use them.
  15. You can have some plywood cubes, which are 0.5m x 0.5m x o.5m. I can give you as many as you want if they're of any use to you.
  16. Teagan Tobias wrote: DEMO's should be removed completely from the market place. The only place you should see them is on a product page. See the product, want a demo, click the demo on the product page. I have said this or similar before, your talking to a brick wall, give it up. It would be a great step in retaining new users. Look you can play SL without spending an arm and a leg. All that would be needed is a 'demo' option for sellers when they list an object, which would automatically distinguish it from freebies or L$1bies.

  18. As well as violating permissions, I can see another reason why it's against TOS to sell an account. If a lot of people in SL get to know you, and then, perhaps after a while you sell your name and account to another person, if that avatar then bumped into your old acquaintances, they wouldn't necessarily know that it was a different person behind the avatar. Or the seller might have some 'baggage' with the account, like drama or stalkers, which would be carried over to the new owner. However I suspect that it's not unknown for people to exchange accounts informally or even sell them.
  19. I've never come across any other forums that get spammed like this one. Yes, they do get individuals who post annoying stuff, plus trolls etc., but nothing like the blanket spamming this place gets day after day, week after week.
  20. For about one tenth of that big sum of L$13,000 you should be able to buy you all you need to make about as good an avatar as it's possible to make in SL! Of course you'd then need to buy clothes for it, but that's another story.
  21. Now we've got cheese to go with all that daily spam :smileylol:
  22. To clarify what I was saying in my earlier post: All I did was download Firestorm, log in, visit a couple of places, one of which I know is very busy and laggy, and see how long things took to rez. Then I did the same with the official LL viewer and found the performance was about the same. This was only a snapshot in time, I hadn't used Firestorm for ages before doing this, so I've no idea what it was like before the latest updates. I was only comparing the latest Firestorm to the latest LL viewer. I've used Firestorm in the past when there have been problems with the LL viewer, but that hasn't happened recently.
  23. I normally use the LL official viewer, so I thought I'd test out the latest Firestorm. The result was..... Subjectively, no detectable difference in performance or graphics quality between the two viewers. I teleported to the busiest, laggiest club I know and in both cases it took about 2 minutes for everything to be fully rezzed.
  24. Take almost any activity that some people pursue for pleasure in their spare time, and you'll find other people who condemn it, whether it be birdwatching, embroidery, following a football team, restoring old cars, collecting costume dolls..... there's always someone who thinks someone's time and money would be better spent doing something else. I suppose we're all guilty of that to some extent. I enjoy Second LIfe although I realise its limitations. In real life I use Facebook to communicate with real relations and friends and it's a useful communication tool. Yet despite this, I've never been tempted to join Twitter, and so I probably have a stereotyped view of Twitter users, and their silly jargon like 'tweets' and 'hashtag'. That's because with Twitter I'm an outsider and intend to remain that way.
  25. We're probably all familiar with people who IM us to vote for them, in retuen for them voting for you. But at one club recently someone kept IM-ing demanding I vote for them! Even after I pointed out that I wasn't in the contest and the board was locked, so I couldn't enter, I was still getting "why U not vote me?" sort of thing!
