  1. Shopping for a house in SL is sort of like shopping for one in RL. Your dream house may not be on the market the day you go looking, so you come back and look again another day or you change your plans. Linden Lab makes a number of houses in each of the Linden Home styles. Some are popular, so they sell out quickly. You just have to wait until LL decides that demand is high enough to warrant building more. Linden Homes turn over fairly quickly too, though, so you might not have to wait for the next building cycle. People move up to larger homes elsewhere all the time. As they do, their Linden Homes go back on the market to be snapped up by someone who is there at the right time. Maybe you.
  2. If you have permission to modify the house, you can change the texure or color on any surface. The simplest way to change a texture is to drag it from your inventory and drop it on the surface that you want to change. However, you should be aware of a few things.... 1. Until you really know what you are doing, never change the texture on anything that you don't have a backup copy of. When you change a texture, there's no "do over" unless you happen to have the original texture somewhere (which you usually don't). 2. A good builder will usually save prims by using a single prim for the wall or ceiling of two or more rooms. If you change the wall in one room, it will change it in the others as well. 3. A texture often needs to be moved around on a surface or rescaled to look right. That's a little more involved, but a skill worth learning. 4. If you don't have permission to modify a building, you can't change the texture on its walls. If you have enough prim allowance left, however, you can add a false wall that sits in front of the original one --- sort of like putting new drywall or wood paneling on a wall in RL. This is a large topic. See an introduction at http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Textures-and-alpha-channels/ta-p/700157 and http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Build-Tools/ta-p/700039 . Consider taking a free in world calss at Builders Brewery or Caledon Oxbridge University.
  3. The "side-by-side" error message isn't coming from SL. That's a windows error. It's telling you in its obscure way that you have a damaged or missing DLL file ... a dynamic link lbrary that's necessary to run some of the software in the background on your machine. The easiest way to recover is to try restoring your computer to some earlier state. When a restore point is created in your computer, a current copy of important files in Windows are saved and can be restored using System Restore. The exact method depends on the version of Window you have installed. To see how to do that on your own machine, see http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/f/windows-system-restore.htm .
  4. Since you haven't actually started doing thing in SL, you don't have anything invested in that account ..... no inventory, not avatar, no L$. The easiest solution is to just walk away and abandon it. Open a new account and watch the typos this time. You can have up to five different accounts on the same household, BTW. Most of us who have been in SL for a while have one or more alternate accounts (alts).
  5. The NVidia gt430 is a bit old now (it came out in 2010) and it was never designed for heavy-duty gaming. NVidia made it as a low-cost GPU primarily for handling home theatre applications. I suspect that means that you'll get low- to medium quality graphics in SL, and that Phoenix will probably run a bit faster than Firestorm, simply because Phoenix doesn't expect quite as much out of a graphics card. If you are buying a graphics card now and if your power supply will handle it, I'd suggest getting one that has a little more oomph. If you already have the gt430, at least give it a try and see what sort of perfomance you get. We might both be surprised.
  6. My first guess is that whoever mainatins the roster has forgotten to add your name to the list that's in its script. I maintain a similar system for volunteers on my sim and I have occasionally forgotten to do that. It's a little embarrassing, but easy to fix. Are you able to open other web pages when you are in world, BTW? If not, check to be sure that you have Javascript and Cookies enabled in Preferences >> Network & Cache.
  7. Moi? Mais non, je suis moi-meme .... Rolig. Merci bien, Val.
  8. Yes, always. If you buy land directly from Linden Lab, you pay a monthly land fee to them. If you buy land on a private sim, you pay a monthly fee to the sim owner, who pays a land fee to Linden Lab. Either way, you pay a fee. It's sort of like buying land in a gated community in RL. You pay a one-time purchase price for the land and you pay a monthly maintenance fee to the community. The big difference in SL is that the price of the land itself is trivial, but the land fees are much larger and are ongoing. They're your proportional share of the cost for providing and maintaining the servers that run the sim your land is on. To read more about land fees and how they are related to the concept of tier (not the same thing), read here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-land/ta-p/700043#Section_.3

  10. I don't understand. You said that your graphics are outdated, but you also said that you updated all of your graphics. Which is it? If you are using old drivers for your card, update them. If you have an old card, get a new one. If you are setting the display quality slider in Preferences >>> Graphics too high, lower it. Here's where to look for current drivers for your graphics card.... Mac drivers are included with OS upgrades. However, to determan what card you have, select “About this Mac” from the Apple menu, then click “More Info”. Under Hardware select Graphics/Displays If you are not sure what type of video card you have, use GPU-Z found (win only) here. For linux, in a console use: lspci | grep VGA Nvidia Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows: 285.62 (Oct 24) beta: 295.51 (Jan 31) - Linux: 290.1 (Nov 22)ATI Video Driver Latest driver Last checked Feb 6th- Windows and Linux: 12.1 (Jan 25)Intel Video Driver Intel driver download page Intel does not have a universal driver set. Please go to Intel's site and select the appropriate download. If you'd like to add more information to clarify what your problem is, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  11. That's interesting..... Linden Home parcels are different from most parcels, because you cannot resell them or deed them to a group. In that sense, they are more like a rental from Governor Linden (the uber-Landowner from whom all land is ultimately purchased) than like an ownership. However, your name should still show as "Owner" in World >> About Land >> General. Check with Live Chat to find out why yours doesn't, especially if you don't seem to have all of your normal rights as a landowner (rezzing, setting the media stream, setting access permissions....). P.S. Also double check first to be sure that you are standing in the right house. They all look alike, so you wouldn't be the first Linden Home resident to wander into the house next door by mistake. :smileysurprised::smileyembarrassed:
  12. That exception code (0xc0000005) that you are indicating --- thank you for posting the details! --- has been showing up a lot recently. I filed a JIRA a couple of days ago to alert the LL developers and we got lucky yesterday afternoon. It looks like a virus has zapped your computer. Check out Aiko Gaea's post near the bottom of the comments in https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-29307?focusedCommentId=335675 to see how to get rid of the virus and clear the problem. It's a bit involved, but several people have tried it now, and it appears to work. Good luck.
  13. Nice work. For completeness, don't forget Hawaiian Standard Time (HST) and Alaskan Standard Time (AKST) too. :smileywink:
  14. Check on the Object tab in your Edit tool to be sure that the object is not locked. If the seller accidentally checked that box, you won't be able to move it at all, but you should be able to uncheck it easily enough.
  15. Here's a handy Torley video that explains what yiou can and can't do with Display Names, including toggling >>> BTW, I like Charolotte's excellent suggestion of using a titler instead of a Display Name. That's how we always did it in Pre-Display Name days. If you are worried about carrying an extra script around in your RP sim, do this ... 1. Rez a prim 2. Add this script to it ... default{ state_entry() { llSetText("Your Display Name Goes Here", <1.0,1.0,1.0>,1.0); // Put your name in the quotes llRemoveInventory(llGetScriptName()); //This line deletes this script }} Once a hover text is set, it doesn't need a script to maintain it, so this script deletes itself when its job is done. 3. Make the prim 100% transparent and attach it to your head 4. When you don't want the title any more, just detach it and save it for the next time.
  16. Go back into the NVidia Control Panel and try enabling Triple Buffering as well as VSync. See if that helps smooth your performance. BTW, I am not running with a GPU that is anywhere near as sophisticated as yours, but mine runs consistently at a little below 40 degrees C. I'd consider 70 degrees to be more than "warm". I hope you have good ventilation and a monster heat sink.

  18. Yes. A landowner can deny access to anyone for any reason at all, or for no reason. It's their land. Many landowners use PIOF as a criterion, in fact, because it's a good way to keep griefers out. Payment information is Linden Lab's best way to know who they are dealing with. Griefers know this, so they will register for an account under a phony name, come in world long enough to wreak havok or run a financial scam on residents, then leave without a trace. They often repeat the process over and over. Refusing to admit people who do not have payment information on file may be unfair to some honest residents, but it's a legitimate way for a landowner to protect himself and his customers from some of SL's rowdiest element. ETA: For the same reason, many landowners will deny access to anyone who has been in SL for less than 30 days. Griefers are often long gone by then, having either finished what they came to do or been caught and banned.
  19. Well, no. The owner may designate others who have managerial powers, so they can also eject or ban people. Also, the owner MAY tell you why you were banned, but doesn't have to tell you anything at all. The owners doesn't even have to HAVE a reason. It's the owner's land. He and his managers have the right to eject or ban anyone, without explanation.
  20. Lindal's told you all the right stuff about downloading the viewer. Give it a try. For the rest of your questions, see http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919 and http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-User-s-Guide/ta-p/1244857 . Welcome to Second Life! :smileyhappy:
  21. Hehehe... Even after five years of living with SL's jargon, I can't see "AFK" without seeing a dumb duck going "AFLACK!!!"
  22. I think the answer is implied in this Q&A note from Linden Lab, although it doesn't answer your question "Why?"...... I receive the error message "This transaction cannot be completed with your chosen payment method, please purcase L$ and reattempt your purchase." when I try to make a puchase using my Credit Card or PayPal account If you receive an error message when attempting to use your credit card or PayPal to make a Marketplace purchase, please attempt to make the purchase using Linden dollars (L$) as the payment method. To purchase additional Linden dollars to complete your purchase: On the upper-right of the page, click Buy L$ In the Linden Dollars (L$) box, enter the amount of Linden Dollars necessary to complete your purchase Click Place Order Return to the Marketplace and check out using Linden dollars as your method of payment. Obviously, some kinds of transactions give their accounting system cholic. Humor them.
  23. That's terrific, Aiko. Thank you for posting this in the JIRA as well.
  24. Bingo, Charolotte! But I still don't understand the OP's question "Is it good ....?"
  25. Nah.... I'm just really cautious about the community guidelines, so my own post was too telegraphic and not as helpful as yours. I didn't mean to poke at you, Marigold.
