  1. The sim probably has a landing point set by its owner, but the landing point was set at its default, which is the center of the sim. If the land surface there is a bit lower than the landing point, you'll TP into thin air and drop. She could ask the sim owner to reset or remove the landing point.
  2. That's very unlikely. Making a mesh avatar takes a lot of skill and time, so it's hard to imagine a creator wanting to give away profits to someone else. The best way to find out, though, is to post your question in either the InWorld Employment forum (to look for a mesh designer who might want to collaborate) or the Wanted forum (to find the rare designer who really is willing to sell a mesh av full perm).
  3. Like most others in this thread, I don't shop very much. I make almost everything I need, so the only things I have to buy are animations (which I don't make) or occasional specialty components or textures that I'm going to put into something for a client. I look for those in a few favorite spots, and I buy full perm. Like Pam, I don't sweat over price as long as the quality is good. If I buy something from a new source and find that the quality doesn't measure up, I don't waste time complaining. I just don't go back or recommend the place to anyone else. When I'm selling things, I expect clients and customers to be picky. I follow three patterns: 1. Items that are custom made for a client are sold with full perms. If the client needs to modify a script, rescale the item, or retexture a surface, it's his/her business. I'll make custom modifications (sometimes free and sometimes for a fee, depending on how complicated they are). I stand by my work and will always fix anything that doesn't do what I designed it to do and the client paid me for. 2. Clothing is sold copy/mod/no-trans. Someone who buys a dress from me ought to be able to make a backup copy, rehem it, and even change its color and texture if she wants to. I just don't want her giving away a zillion copies so nobody else buys it. 3. Scripted items other than the custom-built ones are almost always no-mod, because modifying a scripted item often mucks up the way it's meant to work, and I don't want to get sucked into making a lot of trouble calls to fix things that someone else broke. Besides, the script is usually the tricky part, and I'd rather not give away the store. Depending on the item, I'll make a scripted object with either copy perms or trans perms. None of these rules is immutable, but they're close. I want to give clients and customers enough freedom to change things that aren't exactly right for them. And if something doesn't work as advertized, I'll repair, refund, or replace it.
  4. Textures at 1024 x 1024 do rez slowly. They use 4 times as much memory on your GPU as well. Everyone who sees the textures in world has had to download them to their own computer, which means that everyone has suffered from the lag. As a general rule, the only time you should need that much resolution is if you have a texture with an incredible amount of detail (a sign with loads of text maybe) that you expect people to stop and stare at for a long time. IMO, forcing people to download a huge texture that will be in the background or only seen for a few seconds just isn't a good use of resources, and it's not kind.
  5. Not anyone here in Answers. We are here to answer questions abou how SL works (or why it doesn't). You'll want to post in one of the Creatve forums -- the Mesh forum, specifically. Be sure to ask a specific question about a particular problem you are having, though. ("Any idea about how to make hair lie down flat?"or "How do I apply more than one texture to my model?") A general question like "I can't seem to do it right. Can anyone help me out?" is likely to either get ignored or referred to the Inworld Employment forum, where you can hire a custom artist.
  6. Nope. That really wouldn't make sense. You can't trigger the TP from map view until the map is opened, so you'd need to hit Enter twice. Besides, that still doesn't explain why the map opens at all.
  7. Wow! I couldn't script something to do that if I tried. At least ...... I won't be able to do that for a week or two. There's a brand new script function ( llTeleportAvatar ) that will allow us to teleport an avatar directly to any spot, provided that we have permission first, but that function hasn't been released yet. Although .... wait.... so you're typing something in chat, and the map opens, and then you hit Enter and you TP? If that's what happens, then part of it makes sense. Hitting Enter while you have the map open is the same as hitting the Teleport button. So, don't hit Enter. Click the X to close the map. That still doesn't explain why the map opens, but if you don't hit Enter, at least you won't TP.
  8. Sure. Try this (untested in world but it ought to work.) default{ state_entry() { llSitTarget(<0.0,0.0,0.1>,ZERO_ROTATION); } changed (integer change) { if (change & CHANGED_LINK) { vector Here = llGetPos(); if (llAvatarOnSitTarget()) { vector OverHead = <Here.x, Here.y, 4000.0>; // If you are already at 4000m, change this number to 22.0 llSetRegionPos( Overhead); llUnSit(llAvatarOnSitTarget() ); } else { llSetRegionPos(Here); } } }} You'll have to put this in a second TP unit in your skybox too. Just change the number as indicated in the script. This script will TP you to a point directly above the spot on the ground where you put it, just like an elevator.
  9. Yes, she ought to be able to. That's a really good option, Charolotte. My mind was focused on dragging it with a mouse, because that's what the OP asked about, but I like your idea. Just sit and change the position vector in EDIT. Not just Z, but X and Y too.
  10. Can you clarify something for me? You said that your map "still it keeps popping up and TPing me there" . I can understand the map popping up (sort of), but I am having a very hard time understanding how it keeps TPing you anywhere. Do you mean that it TPs you all by itself? Without you touching the TP button?
  11. BTW, if you use Firestorm those destinations and events are in drop-down menus on the login screen. I don't know if that's the case in V3, which I never use, but Firestorm's setup makes them very easy to ignore. Easy enough, in fact, that I never even looked at them until this question appeared today. :smileytongue: I'd be mildly curious to find out, but I suspect that most Firestorm users just click through login without even noticing them, as I have.
  12. I know both of those. Limit Select Distance does exactly what it says.... limits how far away you can select things. I suspect that there's a connection between that and the moving limitation, maybe because you can't move things beyond your draw distance. Still, there's more to the puzzle than that. Even if you are within your draw distance, there's a limit to how far you can drag stuff without moving yourself first. BTW, Camera Constraints just controls your ability to see inside objects or below the ground -- places where the default camera is not allowed to go. It's not part of this puzzle.
  13. It's not clear whether you want to link to the inworld store from Marketplace or the other way around, so I'll tell you both .... You can't link individual items but you can put a link to your inworld store in the Marketplace store. Go to My Marketplace >> Merchant Home >> Store Setup >> Edit Store Information and enter a SLURL to your inworld store in the appropriate box. The link that you enter will show up as a (tiny) link under your name if someone opens the web page for your Marketplace store and as a link marked See item in Second Life when they open a page for any item in Marketplace. Now, if you want to link from your inworld store to the Marketplace store .... You can create a store sign that sends inworld shoppers to your storefront on the Marketplace website. For the sake of branding consistency, we recommend adapting the same graphics you use on your Marketplace and inworld stores. To create a sign: Create a sign object. For help creating objects, see the Building tips article. Right-click the sign object and choose Edit. In the Build window, click the Content tab. Click the New Script button. Double-click the New Script in Contents to edit it. Completely replace the script's contents with this script: default { touch_start(integer total_number) { // load a dialog with a URL llLoadURL(llDetectedKey(0), "Visit my Marketplace Store", "https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/30"); } } After you've added the script: Customize the highlighted text above to specify your store. The store number is shown in your browser when you login to the Marketplace and choose My Marketplace > My store. Click Save. Close the New Script and Build windows. Click your sign object. A notification should appear with a link to your web store on the Marketplace. This is what your customers will see.
  14. Did you pick up some object while you were there? I ask because I could easily write a script that opens your map view with a preset location whenever the script is activated. That function is usually used in information kiosks to help travelers get to a distant point, but it could be built into a mobile device too. (I have put it in a HUD as part of a guided tour, for example.) It could not teleport you without your permission -- you'd have to click on the map's TP button -- but it would always open the map. Open your inventory's WORN tab to see if you are wearing a new object that might be doing that.
  15. There are practical limits to how far you can drag anything without moving your avatar. I discovered years ago that I had to move displays from one side of a sim to the other in a series of hops, 70 or 80 meters at a time. I have never been sure, but I think it's at least in part a function of your draw distance. If you try to drag an object too far, it simply stops. So, fly closer to the object and try again.
  17. It can sometimes take anywhere from a few minutes to a day or more for your items to be delivered, so be patient for a while. Not that it helps now, but to remember for the future: (1) Don't overuse the shopping cart. It is easily confused if you put more than a couple of things in it. Frankly, I never use the shopping cart at all myself. (2) Don't buy things from Marketplace (especially LOTS of things) unless you are in world to receive them at the time. We each have an "in box" that holds IMs, notecards, group notices, group invitations, and anything that is delivered to us if we aren't in world at the time. That "in box" can only hold 25 things, total. If anything else comes in, it isn't saved. It is gone ... poof .... forever. If you have a mess of things delivered from Marketplace and half your friends send you notecards, that in box will be capped and you will never know what happened. So, what do you do now? ....... To get a record of the individual items in your order, open Marketplace and click the My Marketplace menu at the top of the page. Select My Account >> Order History from the pulldown menu. If you do not receive items within about 24 hours, you should cut and paste the information about a missing item from that Order History and send it in a IM or notecard to the merchant, along with a polite message requesting redelivery. Most merchants are very kind and willing to redeliver. This happens all the time and they are aware of it. Do be patient, though. Not everyone logs in to SL every day or checks their e-mail. If you still haven't heard in another day or two, follow it up with a second polite note and finally, if you STILL haven't heard, file a support ticket at https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ , selecting Marketplace from the pulldown menu.
  18. If the "same problem" is a message about DNS, then ... (1) Try shutting off your computer, unplugging the router and modem for a couple of minutes, and then plugging them back in and restarting. That simple step may clear up everything (2) Add Google's free public DNS servers to whatever your ISP assigns you as a default. Here's how >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (3) If things are STILL messed up, contact your ISP. Maybe they are working on their Internet connections. Mine go down for about 20 minutes once a month or so while they are vacuuming dust out of their servers, or whatever they do.
  19. That's a well-done report -- refreshingly honest and well-balanced. It does illustrate one of the stumbling blocks that many newbies face -- their own crummy computer equipment and Internet connections. I respond to questions in the Answers forum every day, a dismaying number of which boil down to explaining politely why SL is never going to run well on a bargain-basement notebook with a wireless connection. SL is a bandwidth hog and it demands a strong, continuous flow of data back and forth from its servers. It runs best on machine with a high end graphics card and a big cache memory. Newbies who expect a facebook-type social network experience or Wow-style graphics on an underpowered machine give up fast, and I can't blame them. Nor do I make excuses for Second Life. It is what it is. You can't run a world that is user-created, multi-faceted, and constantly changing with simple software on simple computers. The young woman in the video also points quite correctly to another stumbling block for newbies. SL is not a "drop in" world where you can visit for five minutes at a time. It expects a time commitment. People with busy Real Lives can't do that. Building, shopping, and even chatting take blocks of time. If you log out in the middle of an experience, it may not be there when you come back. You can't just pick up where you left off in "Level Five" or whatever. Again, I do not make excuses for SL. It is what it is, and it appeals to those of us who do have the time and patience to spend in world. I recognize both of those stumbling blocks because I dealt with them myself as a newbie. I made my own decision to stay and explore. I'm very glad I did. It doesn't worry me that many newbies make the opposite decision, any more than it bothers me that they don't choose to take up yoga or violin lessons, or buy season tickets to the Red Sox. As I suggested in an earlier post, people who find SL appealing are not easily put off by roadblocks. They may grumble and fume at some of them, but they stay. They're the ones who shape everything from the virtual landscape to the creative/merchant culture --- the ones Linden Lab needs to focus on.
  20. You may be right, Lindal. All I have to go by is what they put on the KB page, which has been misleading in the past often enough. My own account is backed up by a credit card to PayPal.
  21. Here's a possible answer, from The Knowledge Base Billing page..... Often the initial agreement can't be set up due to an unverified PayPal account. To use your PayPal account with Linden Lab, it must be verified and have a credit card on file as a backup funding source. Linden Lab does not accept e-check (bank account) payments through PayPal because they cannot be processed quickly enough to match the instant delivery of virtual goods and services. Therefore, we require that you have a credit card on file with PayPal as a backup payment source. Paypal may be perfectly happy with your bank, but that's not good enough for Linden Lab.
  22. You can't slide down a slide by yourself. You have to sit on a physical object and let it slide down the slide. It will have a tendency to sail over the edge, so you'll need to be sure that you design your slide like a luge run, with high sides where it's likely to go over. You'll also want to set the buoyancy of the sliding object < 1.0 so that it wants to go down, rather than flying up or staying at the same elevation. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Vehicle_Tutorial for tips on creating VEHICLE_TYPE_SLED.
  23. Or use it to drink your coffee alone in peace. :smileywink: /me rushes off to brew a cup........
  24. I suppose it depends on how well your droid is following. All you have to do to lose some followers is duck around a wall or a billboard. The follower is on the other side of the wall, trying to go through it while you walk away, smiling. As an aside, many of the applications that you can script with a sensor/no-sensor event pair can be done just as easily with llGetObjectDetails(UUID,[OBJECT_POS]) or, now, with llGetAgentList, without lagging the sim. That also helps you get around some of the no-sensor problems you listed. ( As a second aside, SLX hasn't existed for years. It became XStreetSL and then, over a year ago, Marketplace. :smileywink: )
  25. You most likely have some corrupted settings files. Sometimes clearing your settings may be the best way to fix a weird problem. Keep in mind that settingsare not cleared by uninstalling or installing new viewers (If clearing settings solves your problem, then you might want to create a backup of your settings once you have restored them as you like them - and assuming that everything works. Click here for instructions. ) So, here's how to clear your settings..... Navigate to the folder that stores the application data for second life - if you do not see this folder, you may need to show hidden folders. On a Mac: /Users/[YOUR USERNAME]/Library/Application Support/SecondLifeFind the folder named “user_settings” and navigate inside it delete everything now locate the folders which have the names of your avatar(s) in each of these folders, locate the file settings_per_account.xml and delete it If that doesn't work, then continue by re-installing your SL viewer.
