  1. Short answers: Yes, almost certainly, a piece of string. Long answers: There are thousands of clubs and venues in SL, many of which are available to hire. In adition LL has (ir had?) some scheme whereby you can hire a whole sim, but that'll be expensive. Resident-owned clubs/venues will be considerably cheaper but how much is entirely down to the land-owner, so it's impossible to even geive you a riough guess,
  2. Try posting in the rolepay forum: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Role-Play/bd-p/RolePlay or one of the others under the "People Forum" category.
  3. This might have been caused by the database maintenance (http://status.secondlifegrid.net/). If so, it should be working now.
  4. Jaffee Gaffer wrote: (1) It's great that you fixed something (2) that wasn't really broken at all, and made sure that it was broken big time now. (5) Everyone I know is having problems with SSA ... 1. WE haven't fixed anything, being residents just like you. 2. Avatar baking always had problems; there are fewer people complaining about it now than there used to be. 3. The point of SSA is that the viewers don't update avatar textures any more, hence 'server side'. 4. But how reliable and stable is your connection? Ping, packet loss and jitter matter far more than speed. 5. Now you know someone who isn't. You are right, of course, that LL's software isn't so much released as escapes but SSA seems to be one of their better attempts so far.
  5. IF you follow the instructions to use the test male character and/or Ruth yourself there is no "it won't come off" problem. YOU tell SL to put you back to the basics. It's the nuclear option. Either you did that or you didn't. If you didn't; do it! What happened when you tried it? IF a bunch of stuff re-attaches AFTER you've gone back to basics then you are seem to have attracted the attention of a very persistent grifer-object to which YOU have given ATTACH permissions (variant of always-animating/deforming attack). AR AND file an urgent support ticket. IF you simply can't do the test avatar BECAUSE xxxx won't come off then you're well out of normal viewer stuff. Even RLV shouldn't behave so badly.
  6. To clarify - a picture IS a texture just like any other graphics file in SL. Whatever graphics file you import can be used to texture any object (that you have modify rights for). You don't say what game you're in or what sort of thing your ad is so we can't give you specific advice on those. Most advertising boards have instructions in a notecard for how to set their texture (picture), contents to give on touch, landmark, etc.
  7. Ah, the endless complexities of English. Who would have thought such a simple question could have caused such confusion. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have thought of it had you not asked. To explain our confusion, in case that's confusing you and we're just getting each other into a bigger muddle; We can understand your question to mean "why can I only see myself when I am sitting somewhere and I can't see myself at other times?", "why can I only see myself and can't see anything else when I am sitting somewhere" or "why can I only see myself but there's no-one else around when I am sitting somewhere", as Rolig has pointed out.
  8. This 18-month old post being Ripley's ONLY post I doubt very much if you'll get a reply in these forums. It may be worth PM or IMing but don't be surprised to find they've left SL.
  9. 'Breaking the bank' is entirely subjective but first I would look at the nvidia GTX 650. The way their product numbering goes the first digit is the year (higher = newer) and the next two the level within that (higher = more powerful). If that card is too expensive look at an older, maybe secondhand 550 (ie; older but probably just as powerful) or better. Alternatively, if you can stretch to something more expensive, look at the 660s or better.
  10. Does your computer meet the system requirements for running the SL viewer you downloaded? Please can you use Options > Edit on your post to give us the details of your computer, if it does.
  11. I thought he said "the end of Summer" without giving any year? I thought along the same lines as you - but with a longer timescale.
  12. Custom mesh work is likely to be expensive, although having a model for the builder to work from wull definitely help you. On the other hand, if they're just copying your model, do you really expect the mesh version to be much better? Depending on the type of objects these are you can reduce the Land Impact (LI) by setting the Physics Shape Type to 'convex hull', If the objects are attachments, however, it doesn't matter what their LI is, as long as you aren't having rezzing issues with them.
  13. HUDs are usually very, very small when rezzed in-world so hard to see. Since you can see its hovertext though you know more or less where it is. Ensure you have 'select only my items' checked, focus the camera on that area, press ctrl-F3 to open the edit window and drag a box over the area on-screen. Only your items, in that area, will be selected and that should pretty much narrow it down to the HUD. Take it!
  14. Watching women dressing up? "No, of course your backside doesn't look big in that", "Is 'chartreuse' really a colour?", "Can I go now?", "In that case, can we go to the underwear department instead?", "Awwww. come on, the pub's open" But I should really have written "I don't think you're going to have much fun dressing up unless you learn a little about SL first"
  15. I think I'm the only one introducing the confusion. Sorry to have mucked up your thread ^^
  16. I haven't seen these pop-ups that you mention but it seems like something LL would have added to try to attract people from online games into SL. Farming, as such, doesn't exist in SL and jobs pay way less than most countries' minimum wage so aren't worth it if you are only doing it for the money (if you're doing it for the fun and it keeps SL costs to a minimum that's a different matter). There are, at least, several thousand groups - probably hundreds of thousands - covering all intests and role-play forms, including vampire, etc. Unless those groups are concerned with RL topics - books, science, music, etc. - whatever they do is 'just' roleplay and will depend entirely on the group. Land and assistance are important. All land in SL is really owned by Linden Lab but the rights to most are 'sold' to individuals and groups. This is expensive (c USD$300/month for 65,000 sqm) and unless the land-owner allows building there is nowhere you can make or put-out your own things. There are several in-world helper organisations specifically set up and funded to provide such (temporary) building space and advice/assistance to new residents; or anyone else that wants to learn a bit more about how SL works. If you'd prefer to visit one of those organisations I suggest NCI (Kuula or Hamnida sims are best), Caledon Oxbridge (an excellent self-paced walkthrough introduction to SL and the 'Caledon' area is a great group/theme for Victorian Steampunk or just sightseeing) and/or Builder's Brewery.
  17. Too late, the picture has changed, at least when I logged into the marketplace to check for you. It might come around again. The Fall is a LL promotional event as far as I understand it, presumably meaning 'Autumn' fashion. As I couldn't see the particular items you were seeing I can't assist, sorry. Enjoy shopping through all the rest though.
  18. Unlike Rolig I don't think you're going to have much fun dressing up. SL has a steep learning-curve when you start and if you dive straight into changing clothes you'll have a difficult and frustrating time. At minimum you need to be able to: Find your inventory Find clothes in your inventory Understand the difference between 'system' clothes and attachment prim-objects Wear different layers of system clothes and multiple attachments Move, rotate and resize SL objects, while you're wearing them None of this is hard IF anyone ever tells you how to do it. Trying to work it out for yourself is a nightmare though. This is especially true of hair! We are all bald and wearing wigs in SL - but not the 'system' hair. The starter avatars look good these days so instead of making things hard for yourself before you start changing clothes visit an in-world helper organisation like those below and ask the helpers there for assistance. Take a few classes, learn a bit about how SL works. The big thing is that in order to understand how clothes work you have to understand (a little bit about) how building anything and everything in SL works. No, there isn't much difference between a wig and a house in SL. For helper organisations try visiting: NCI (several locations around SL. Kuula sim is their main location but Hamnida is usually less busy and laggy). Especially good for the range of freebies, classes and information available. Helpers almost always available in Kuula, less often in other locations. Caledon Oxbridge (Caledon Oxbridge sim). A really impressive build with a walkthrough tutorial that covers almost all aspects of SL (including lessons on changing appearance!). The 'Caledon' sims are a good place to start exploring SL too, especially if you like Victorian 'steampunk'. There's usually a helper or two on duty but sometimes not. Builder's Brewery (Builder's Brewery sim). Not one I'm familiar with myself but recommended by other helpers here.
  19. My brain in neutral, I looked at the timing figures and glanced at the memory-use and assumed they were also worse so reporting memory used. They are, indeed, memory free and therefore better. Oops.
  20. Atreidia wrote: ...Money. ... I would like to create a sim ... Atreidia Resident Content creation, or purchase, is the cheap part! We can't 'create' sims, or smaller areas of land, however. A sim will cost around USD$300 per month - real money. Do you already have that land, or do you have the finance to rent it?
  21. Ooooh, a live one! Thank you for adding that system information so quickly - you have no idea how many people never do. It will be a pleasure to (try to) help you :-) "Not responding" would be a WIndows message that SL is frozen. That is usually because SL can't communicate with the servers. The most likely cause of that is your wireless connection. Unlike 'games' where almost all the content is installed on your computer SL is an ever-changing, resident-created virtual world that requires a lot of your internet connection. 4GB RAM is a little tight for Windows 8 but shouldn't be an issue. As it's a laptop your system may well include an integrated graphics system which may not be able to handle SL's requirements. If this is the case then you'll just not be able to run SL on that laptop, although a third-party viewer sometimes works for people when the official one doesn't. If at all possible try to run SL with a wired connection instead of wireless - that is, plug it into your router directly, Wireless is notoriously unpredictable and can run slowly or erratically enough at times that SL simply 'locks up', resulting in "Not Responding" from Windows and, after the system times-out and gives-up, SL crashing. Good luck
  22. Most people abandon SL after one or two visits, having never been anywhere or done anything in-world or asked for help from any of the groups available. Congratulations on lasting 3 months and, by the look of your posting history, trying a good range of things. Sorry it didn't 'click' for you.
  23. "What exactly is a bot?" Your question is a good one but someone simply logging lots of alts on in separate viewers is just using lots of alts - which also might be in breach of the TOS - not a bot. Many things in SL are 'unfair' in that some people are honest and some aren't. LL's enforcement of any of their policies - apart from getting paid on time - is erratic and arbitrary at times. That's just the way it is and when it comes to clubs it'll almost certainly do them no good anyway. Clubs come and go in SL all the time; if they have to cheat to look popular, and are the sort of people who cheat, they won't last long. Never mind, another one will be along in a minute.
  24. They'd make more money if they enabled more of us to pay them :-)
