  1. Ahhh, nostalgia. I used to be able to run all day. Do you have a question for us other residents or would you like to talk to LL Billing?

Forumites are, to put it mildly, more used to having their assumptions questioned than the usual know-nothings, care-less, who are likely to put multi-MB scripts in an object in the first place or leave them there later. I was very aware that this unscientific survey was likely to produce slanted results, that the majority of respondents would be people who are better educated on this subject. But surprises do happen, like when I did my survey on screen sizes. I was expecting to see a lot more people with smaller screens because of the number of lap top users who post here. Forums are no doubt one of the worst places to attempt to do a scientific survey. Oooh, that must have been while I was away. Link (or summary) please, I'd be interested in seeing the results you got.

There was a consultation 3 or 4 years ago on which 'communities' would be supported. AFAIK LL actually took some notice of residents' suggestions about them. Everything else was designed to fit seamlessly with the rest of Marketplace - ie; it is, as you say, crap. Perish the thought that they'd police the marketplace in any way; that'd put off the scammers, fraudsters, thieves and liars.

LL Take a good look at GTA5 *sigh* Here we go again. Someone who has completely failed to understand SL or why it is (more or less) the way it is. I just can't be bothered to go into all the "LL doesn't make the world, residents do" stuff yet again. When you and the other droves of users migrate to this other virtual world where you can do everything and it all looks pretty I hope you have a very nice time. Many people have tried to displace SL, either deliberately or tangentially. For we residents that's good - more competition means more options for us - but it's not going to cause a complete re-write of SL. Incidentally, there is no 'incredible step forward' in GTA V. Bethesda has been doing 'whole worlds' with the Elder Scrolls series for quite a few years, GTA V might do it better but with the start, team and budget it had it should do! If you REALLY want a VR like GTA V you'll probably have to pick your game engine (or start from scratch) and get coding.
  5. Your IM to the owner of the vendor was correct, An Abuse Report isn't; which is why LL won't take any notice, This thread has absolutely nothing to do with your question and no-one here has any ability to do anything about it, There isn't anyone who can or will do anything about your issue, apart from the vendor-owner. (The Terms Of Service explain that Linden Lab will not get involved in inter-resident disputes. If this is important enough take it to a RL lawyer and/or the police and then take the would-be seller to court. If it isn't that important write it off as "one of those things" in SL).
  6. The best I could find in a quick look was http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Combat/Systems, which doesn't mention the DM system. Since your objects will need to work with other people's your best bet is to ask them where they got their information.
  7. Well done. It is good to see those sort of figures after the ones I was finding :-)
  8. Apart from setting a record for necro-posting do you have a point with this? With your experience in SL you should know that this is impossible with the normal tools we have and would, therefore, require a substantial rewrite of the viewer. Indeed, TPVs with RLV support "could", sort-of, allow this since they have the ability to force-wear an item on the avatar, which the normal viewer with LSL does not. If this were possible it would have been done a while ago. Since the introduction of 'outfits' it is less useful now than it was years ago.

But I can't stop buying stuff that look just fantastic, even if it's no mod with scripts.:womansad: Applause though - the rest of your post demonstrates that you know and care about the impact and do what you can about it. In fact, you do a lot :-)
  10. Awwwwww, someone loves you Ceka - you have exactly 1 recent Kudo as far as I can see You can check by clicking your name at the top of the page (where it says "Welcome, Ceka Cianci"). At the lower-right of that screen are gadgets with 'recent kudos to' and 'recent kudos from'.
  11. (Must add) 9a. I have the same problem as 7,000 other people reported (answer: read the *%$£ answers we gave them!) 9b. I have the same problem as the other people in this thread (answer: and this adds to the solution how? (Sometimes it does, verifying this isn't unique to the OP)) 9c. I have the same ... (answer: that would be the one on the grid status page then).
  12. All in all you'll find SL a bit easier if you read some stuff, especially before you start paying for things.
  13. But you just know Storm has to comment some time Drake ^^

  15. Coby Foden wrote: To get a next higher rank; I have no idea at all what one must do. IIRC it is a combination of kudos and accepted answers. The creation forums, AFAIK, are kudos-enabled or whatever the other cheese is. Although I try to put in my time in Answers - the worst designed UI since Viewer 2's sidebar mk I - I think I became the first male helper because of the answers I gave in the scripting forum. The questions in Answers fall into a few easily-answered categories: I'm new and have no idea what to do (answer: go to NCI, Caledon Oxbridge, etc. starter group) I can't do x because I'm an idiot (answer: as above or below) My machine crashes all the time/won't log in/lags like mad/doesn't even vaugely meet the system requirements (answer: update your graphics driver, stop using a crappy wireless connection, do a clean install, get a proper computer) There really is a bug in SL, eg; partnering, feeds, rezzing, groups (answer: no **bleep** Sherlock, Wonder why it takes a 1-post, 2-day old avatar to see it? I wish someone had noticed that 7 years ago and filed a JIRA. Oh; they did, and LL have ignored/marked as fixed/rejected it - sometimes "completely changed it and you're talking rubbish") LL won't accept my credit/debit/pre-paid card or paypal (answer: LL is the only company on the internet that don't want your money. Do something useful with it instead and enjoy SL for free) Rant, rant, RANT, your fault (answer: we're just residents, why not rant to LL?) Why? (answer: Because) Rumour said the sky is falling (answer: that's what rumour does) [That's enough helper trade secrets for now: Ed]
  16. Yeah, sorry Perrie but 2 strikes and you're out. In this thread you also said: ... they don't invest in educating people as to best practices. A concerted effort by LL to better educate could prove less expensive and more productive than all the other resources they are investing in improving performance. Now I've had to click the "Report Inappropriate Content" button! LL should talk to their customers AND you want to dream? That's the sort of crazy talk that keeps you Martians as members ^^
  17. showtime() would generate hovertext were it not deactivated by the return. It's not a bad little function actually, showing the times the last (<11) things happened. Keeping in mind the limited length of hovertext though I wouldn't think it'd manage all of them.
  18. You don't say where you are shopping, but I'm assuming you mean the marketplace? There isn't. If there were too many merchants would just game (ie; cheat) the system. Shopping in-world is more interesting and fun anyway.
  19. How much bandwidth you use depends on how many different/new places you visit. For a while I was using SL with a wifi 'dongle' designed for phones to surf the internet; an altogether different requirement. It was pretty awful but worked well when it worked ^^. As I was paying for every byte it also meant I paid close attention to what I was using. The big demand from SL is, not suprisingly, when you visit a new sim and all the object and texture details need to be downloaded. Once they have been cached the usage drops to an idle of 100kbs or so - sometimes even less. Depending on the complexity and stability of the data that needs storing you may be able to cache 3 or 4 sims and get away with a lot of hours. AVOID: Streaming video *at all* - I film is c 1.5GB as a rule of thumb. Streaming music if you can help it - depending on the stream quality, etc. the amount can vary a lot but allow 1MB/min. Skype - it's basically a two-way stream. Oversized pictures in web sites & email (see below). 'Busy' ot constantly-changing sims - which just means more data has to be sent to your machine all the time. With those provisos I worked as a Land Officer for NCI across 3 sims, while scripting, and was in-world for c 18 hours/day one month. Really kicking it like that I used about 7GB, more usually SL needed about 2 - 4 for pretty intense use. I'm still usng a capped broadband service but usually use c 3GB/month for all purposes. [A note about pictures in email/web sites:- Many people love to post their 16 mega-pixel (or whatever) pictures all over the place. A screen with 2000 x 2000 pixel resolution - which is more than most people have got anyway - can only SHOW 4 mega-pixels! Image-editing software can be used to store pictures with a lower resolution and everyone saves TONS of bandwidth. eg; a photo stored as 4.2MB (in JPG format) reduced to 160Kb without visible loss of quality (unless you zoom in). This is very dependent on the picture itself and YMMV but the advantage is obvious].
  20. As far as I know I don't have resize scripts in any of the objects I've bought. Certainly if they were ever there I've deleted them now. Even if someone thinks their object *needs* a resize script there is never any need for more than 1 script, whatever the number of prims in that object. Under LSO a script can only ever be 16k, under Mono it could be up to 64k but 'should' be able to run in less than the LSO 16k. Any creator using more than 1 script for resizing is simply not doing their job properly. There are several - free - resizer scripts in the scripting library (http://community.secondlife.com/t5/LSL-Library/bd-p/LSLScriptingLibrary), including at least one that can resize the x, y and z dimensions independently.
  21. Abolutely Steph. I'd just finished reading through it as you posted the above. Apart from being way too long and complicated for a newbie script it would help if it were better written - simple things such as having all the global variable definitions in one place (at the top!) for instance. I thought the "L" mentioned in showtime() was missing until I read more carefully. On the other hand ... If this is being used as part of a guided class the instructor can walk through it and, presumably, explain other/better ways to do the same thing. It is a pity though that beginners are being taught to bug people! ETA for below: "list L" is declared a few lines above look_for_avatars(). The timer uses llListenControl() to turn the listen off.
  22. It says it all really, doesn't it: tablets are such wonderful machines that with very little extra you can connect them to a computer capable of doing the real work. For all those people in parts of the world where broadband capacity isn't free, also please remember that you will be paying i) for all the same SL communications as ever to your PC/Mac, 2) re-sending (streaming) the rendered results out again, 3) receiving those results on the tablet. The question has to be, if you need two computers instead of one, extra software and 3-times the broadband capacity what really is the tablet adding to the experience?
  23. Could I ask what prim-count and/or land impact the house you chose has? I looked at the marketplace in response to this thread and most of the mesh houses I found were ridiculously high - 200+ for a smallish house, for instance.
  24. As you are not looking for ANSWERS you may wish to re-post this in the WANTED forum http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Wanted/bd-p/Wanted or INWORLD EMPLOYMENT http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inworld-Employment/bd-p/InworldEmployment You may also wish to consider the problems of resizing mesh clothes (you can't, so you have to have 'standard'-sized avatars), the cost involved in making and rigging them (much higher than other object types) and whether you really need your jackets made this way.
