  1. Reply to ELxCODYx17 (clicked the wrong Reply-button). This effect seems to be normal, I have the same effect. I parked my lion butt in front of a relatively busy scene and got these results: All shaders off: 25 fps Basic shader: 17 fps Atmospheric: 16 fps Light & Shadows: Shadows disabled: 10 fps, all shadows on: 5.5 fps. ( All sliders full, except sky = minimal, draw range 320m, particles = 8192) That on a quad core AMD Phenom2 945 and a Radeon HD6450. So this effect is normal. However, we need a few technical informations to see, if the achieved framerates and effects are normal. However, I don't have degradation effect on spheres, so somethings wrong there. Graphics driver uptodate? The scene is here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Patagonia/60/129/34 looking at the waterfall/fountain.
  2. A lot of what the Lab does, is downright illogical. See the thread about that screwed-up picture contest amongst other things. Especially when it comes to dealing with customer issues.
  3. The domes -I call them skyboobs because of their form- contain a plate you can build on, while the dome contains an artificial horizon/sky. This allows to offer a bigger area to build on while providing additional privacy. The prims are shared between these boobs/boxes/platforms.
  4. Charolotte Claxton wrote: "Although, I like how barren it is, as it reduces lag." A lot of this barrenness is invisible lag. Provided by skyboobs, skyboxes, etc. instead. Skyboobs: http://sl.jadeclaw.de/Snapshot_380.png The ground below is empty.
  5. Charolotte Claxton wrote: "So if I owned a sim, I could rent it out and make a profit and give LL money to operate, yes?" Yes. A full mainland sim 65535m² cost US$195 per month. I pay currently L$1,3 per prim, so if you rent out at the same rate you would make US$312,-- per month before taxes @ 100% occupancy. If you rent out mainland, it doesn't have to be contiguos, so you can offer variety. If you want to offer high qualtity at a higher premium, the tier for a full estate still allows for a profit. However, don't expect 100 % occupancy and you have to deal with something Prokofy Neva affectionally calls: "Rental Dementia". I'm not sure, that you want to have that. PS: Group ownership allows for an additional 10% of land in a given tier bracket.
  6. The question is: Will forcing members from basic to premium outweigh the loss from members simply quitting. Plus the reduction in activity on the mainland and private estates, which reduces the attractivity of SL further. Plus the loss in the inworld economy. I highly doubt, that forcing members into a premium membership really helps SL to make more money. I'm pretty sure, the opposite will be the result.
  7. Christi Maeterlinck wrote: "And the problem disappeared as soon as I set _all_ the partitions to ownership by group." Isn't that the way it should work? Being the member of a group should NOT give other group member rezz-rights to your own land. only to other group land. In other words: A security hole has been fixed.
  8. And the only way to have a full private Homestead sim (3750 prims) without paying an additional US$295,-- for a Full Estate one doesn't need or want is to rent. One example: Anshe Chung currently offers a Homestead for L$7499,-- / week. That's US$ 120,-- a month. And no set-up fee.
  9. Charolotte Claxton wrote:"I respect that it is a lifestyle choice, but I do not see how being a basic member gets you more for less." Quick calc: I pay currently L$650,-- /wk for 2048m², that's about EUR8,50 per month. for the same amount land directly bought from LL I would have to pay a minimum of about EUR 7,-- /month for the premium membership plus EUR 12,-- per month for the 2048m² bracket tier. Thats EUR 19,-- per month instead of EUR 8,50. I can live without the occasional premium gifts and premium sandboxes. Ok, I get EUR 4,-- as a stipend back from LL in L$, but it is still more expensive. Even Premium plus renting is cheaper...
  10. I think, you are forgetting something. Basic members are not freeloaders. First, without spending any L$, SL isn't really fun, so most active basic members will spend money and are spending money. Linden Lab gets a share on every sale. Second, renting land as a basic member ensures tier payment from landlord to LL. Third, restricting all sandboxes to premium members would be interfering, how someone uses his land. Most, if not all LL-provided sandboxes are reserved for premium members, but a lot of public sandboxes are privately owned, restricting their use IS unfair interference. Fourth, Uploads are not free, L$10,-- per file. And not to forget, restricting basic memberships further would drive a lot of these out of SL and user retention is already a sore point, driving out members would damage SL even more. You don't want this. Right?
  11. Well, you have to pay for your land regularly, when you buy land, you have to be a premium member, US$10,-- per month, cheaper if you buy a longer term in advance, however, everything over the included allotment of 512m² costs an extra monthly fee. if you don't want to pay for a premium membership, you can rent instead, for that, you only need Linden$ and a free basic membership. A nice cottage next to my parcel is available for L$150,-- / week for 150 prims: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Patagonia/195/210/41 Lindens can be bought via Linden Exchange itself or via some of the 3rd-party exchanges. I'm happy with this one: https://www.eldexchange.eu/index.php But no matter, if you want to own land or rent, it ALWAYS means regular payments of one or other kind.
  12. 3 are around this piece of water: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Limia/138/109/48 To the south is also the premium airport in Orville: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Orville/99/152/48 1 is here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Sandbox%20Prodesse/241/244/48 All 4 are quadsized (4 sims in a square)
  13. I don't see much problems with these, as they store only anonymous statistical data. The real privacy issues are in these customer loyalty schemes, like Nexus and Payback, as these record every purchase, the amounts itemized, the type of payment used, etc. When a shop can predict the birth date of a current pregnancy just from the purchases a female customer makes, that creeps me out. One wonders, what other conclusions can be made from customer data.
  14. Delivery is a hit&miss-experience for me since some time as well, with most going through. Important is NOT to write one star reviews, the seller is innocent here, if an item doesn't get delivered. Reserve those, if the seller fobs you off or the product is truly awful. Do this: Wait 24 to 48 hours. NEVER activate 'Busy' state. Check your transaction log here: https://secondlife.com/my/account/transactions.php?lang=en-US I had money debited after buy, only to have it credited back a few hours later, when the delivery failed. If the money doesn't come back after 48hours, contact the seller and include the transaction data in the message, so the seller can compare it with his account history. If it was a free item, just order it again. Contact LL support, if the money did not show up on the sellers account and is not credited back. If you buy inworld, it could be advisable not to tp out, until the item is delivered. One vendor even had a message like that popping up.
  15. Wasn't it a hippo?: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Hippo
  16. Is it necessary to have your own piece of land or will a haybale do as well? L$1,-- /week for 5 prims. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Fenstreet/124/99/50 These haybales are originally for selling things, so it's a group land pool.
  17. An Idea I had yesterday while soaking in the bathtub: ( Yes, I know, cats and water...) Premium members selling day premium passes for L$150,-- a pop. L$25,-- stay as commission with the seller, L$125,-- go directly to LL. A pass is valid for 24 hours, that period starts, when the payment is debited from the buyers account.
  18. The club is the problem. However, the club owner cannot be held responsible, what his customers do outside the premises. But with a club comes traffic. Aside from the ever curious, you've got misjudged teleports, outdated landmarks and overshoot. Especially near sim borders. I even managed to land INSIDE banlines thanks to overshoot after a sim crossing. No, I didn't got ejected. :matte-motes-agape: Question: How much do you pay for your apartment? Around my property, there are parcels in the range from L$300,- to L$450,- available. Plus a nice cottage for L$150,- with 150prims free. Seafront/seaview. Advantage of rented land: You can set some necessary land options yourself. have Ban & Eject rights and you can have a skybox. It is a quiet sim and at 4000m ASL it is really quiet. Since it is mature rated land, adult rated things/doings must be taken inside a home, but since you are doing it already, I don't see a problem with that. In your situation, moving seems to me indeed the best option as it takes you out of the fly-in corridor. I'll send you a few landmarks via PM, so you can look around and can think it over. Marmar Karu wrote: "Am i so wrong to think that respect should be a given in a place like SL, as most would respect people in RL for their privacy?" No, you're absolutely right. But, the way SL is constructed, you cannot expect the privacy you have in RL. If I want to spy on my RL-neighbors, I would have to work quite hard (quadcopter, fat telephoto lenses, long ladders, drilling holes into walls, etc. And the police coming to an unannounced visit 10 minutes later.) In SL, you simply use the camera controls. And noone will notice you peeping around.
  19. Sorry Peggy, but I have to disagree here. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: "So anyone who turns off scripts and/or object entry is going to equate them to a "griefer"?" Peggy, please don't claim something I didn't say. If someone loses his No-Copy-vehicle and has to go to the seller to beg for a replacement, that vehicle owner will start to investigate, where did that happen. And that can create the impression, the landowner did it on purpose. Please don't use the broad tarbrush here. That's all about that. Re: Banlines as litter source: I travel a lot and practically on every tour I see stranded vehicles, sometimes under water, sometimes at 200m ASL. But most somewhere around and on parcels with banlines active. About the adjustments I stated: I had actually the best results with that at an earlier place. Luckily, at my new place, I had no bad experiences. Only nice neighbors. About security orbs: Again, don't claim something I didn't say. I don't endorse them, I had filed a bunch of ARs because of them. It is no fun being taken out of free air at 500mASL with no skybox or other stuff in draw range. When that happens, I file an AR. Always. 100%. My advice had a simple purpose: Protecting the house itself. Noone has the right to tp into a house. In that case, the owner has the absolute right to kick out the intruder. If you want to visit someone, tp to the front door/gate and ring the bell or IM the owner beforehand. Peggy Paperdoll wrote: "Your's appears to revolve around your ability to fly or drive where ever you want without restrictions. That's pretty selfish on your part." And wrong again. It's not about me. It is about the whole driving, flying, seafaring community. And Linden Lab is actively encouraging vehicle use, the last premium gift was a double decker aeroplane. And of course I'm considerate to my neighbors by climbing quickly to a decent flight level. I don't drive around on other peoples roofs, it is no fun and I know how to behave. Btw, you can't claim the whole airspace above your property in RL either. There is a minimum flightlevel set by the administration of your country for safety reasons, but above that it is free to use for everyone with a valid license. I suggest to try my settings first, if it solves the problem - fine. If not, it is still possible to tighten the different options further. Until we get feedback from the thread opener, I suggest to agree to disagree and leave it at that. (Don't know, at which length the mod starting to lock threads in this section.)
  20. I'm pretty sure, LL doesn't like that. Btw, found the following sign at the Hoof it-ranch: If anyone asks you for money, please let {owner} know - and keep your cash in yer pocket. Pooping on freeloaders is officially permitted. Thanks ( http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Nectaris/52/55/39 )
  21. According to the blog post, that airport is on the west end of one of the Linden home continents: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Orville/128/128/2 You have three quad-sim sandboxes to the north, plus interconnecting sims and the whole Linden-home-continent, which takes out a lot of the usual problems encountered on the mainland.
  22. Marly Tomsen Rentals: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Junlong/131/184/50 Ravenglass Rentals: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Alston/115/23/37 Ravenglass is self service: Pay rental box at the parcel you want to rent, join group the parcel is in, then IM Prokofy Neva for upgrade to Resident. Both landlords allow setting of Media, Autoreturn (Important!) and Ban-lists. Remember to read the covenant/notecards provided from the rental boxes / offices. Oh, and removing the TP-button from the Radar solves exactly? Nothing. Why? There are enough inworld devices and HUDs available, showing the way to the avatar, so walking or teleporting there is no problem. And the Minimap has the functionality as well, just double click next to the dot representing the avatar you want to visit. That takes you close enough to find the avatar quickly. And none of these methods ask the destination avatar for permission. I suggest to see your presence in SL as similar to having a public website on the internet. That's, how I see my presence here.
  23. As Lindal suggested, talk to your landlord about the necessary permissions. When you have the necessary permissions to set the options in the About Land dialogue, read on: Lindal Kidd wrote: 2. General ban. Usually only available if you own mainland. In About Land/Access, uncheck the public access box. Only you and people you put on your access list will be able to come on the parcel. 3. About Land/Options. Turn off Scripts, Object Rezzing, and Object Entry for "everyone". Only you and (if the land is set to group) your group members will be able to bring objects and scripts onto your land. Don'tdo that. Banlines do not protect from griefer attacks from neighboring parcels. But instead making other peoples life miserable. Plus, it's a major factor in littering. Turning off Scripts and Object Entry kills any aircraft, separating pilot and vehicle, flying is already a pain in the a** with buggy sim crossings and overloaded parcels. Plus, No Copy-vehicles can get lost in that case, that makes you be seen as a griefer. The correct way (All in the About Land dialogue): Banlines off. They work only up to 100 to 150m and are ineffective against particle spam. And it is still possible to shoot objects onto your parcel. That's how these cars ended up behind banlines: http://sl.jadeclaw.de/Snapshot_405.png Instead add known griefers to the Banned Residents list. That is the only one effective up to 5000m and more. And keeps them off your ground reliably. If they dig out their alts, Freeze, Ban, Eject, Abuse Report is the way to go. Scripts and Object Entry to Everyone. Vehicles can cross without problems, cleanup scripts can correctly remove stuck vehicles. Build to Group or off, so only you can rez stuff. Autoreturn to a sensible value, normally 10 to 30 minutes, in your case, I suggest 3 to 5 minutes. Autoreturn is the important one here, as it removes anything you do not own from your parcel. That is exactly, what you want - Automatically getting rid of griefer devices pushed or dropped onto your ground. Banlines do not prevent that. If your parcel is surrounded by abandoned or protected land, check, if Autoreturn is active there, if not, file a support ticket to get it activated, if it is privately owned, contact the land owners about the issue. That prevents griefers from leaving their devices there. Security orbs: Check the covenant, if it is rented land, if these are allowed. If security orbs are allowed, set one inside your house and set it up in a way, that it only covers the building itself. And set it then to a very short time. That way, avatars teleporting into your bedroom gets them ejected quickly. For the rest of your property, Freeze, Ban, Eject, Abuse Report is the way to go.
  24. The problem is, some stuff is based on the username, other things are based on the UUID. And this mishmash basically makes changing the usernames impossible without breaking a lot of things in the process. Had the original developers thought this fully through at the beginning, everything would be UUID-based, there where no display names and the username could be changed at any time without any problems. I have programmed a few systems for user/customer managing&access and wisely based all of them on a form of system generated user id, made extending them relatively painless, as everything could be reliably linked to that single data field.
