I am so sorry this is happening to you. $1,000 is a huge chunk of change and then to have the PC not work as it should. I have an ancient (by today's standards) PC that was custom built for me at a small computer shop. I would estimate the motherboard/graphics card/RAM to be approximately 8 years old; however, I keep in on pretty much 24/7 with weekly reboots and it never gets super hot. Sometimes it's warmer than other times, taking off the case and blowing some compressed air on the fan does the trick. (My cat likes to walk around the PC...lol.) I do have my PC sitting on top of my desk and it's a hunking piece of metal, but as others have said, air flow is very important. Hopefully things will work out and you can enjoy your new PC. thanks for replying Czari .. my old computer was an old one of my brothers that he gave me .. it was @ least 8 yrs old & it ran SL ok so long as all the settings were low .. it was filthy inside it so i was vacuuming it out & apparently fried it with static electricity from the vacuum .. i have a cat too & dust & hair were all up inside it .. this is one reason i dont want to take the sides off the new ones case Jeanne
  2. Deja Letov wrote: Did you have it in one of those desk slots with the door in it so it looks like a cabinet and hides the computer? if so, part of your problem is that. Those things are HORRIBLE for computers and don't let the hot air out so they can over heat. I doubt thats the entire issue, but it's probably not helping. yeah Deja .. i have a desk exactly as you describe .. cept i long since took the front door off its hinges .. i took my computer out of there & now its majorly in my way .. i may put it back this winter but im keeping it out while its still hot Jeanne
  3. thanks Alicia .. the front fan blows in but i think all the rest blow out .. so i should turn the lower side fans around? LoL my brother use2 run his puter w/ the sides open & his iguana would get up inside it where its warm !! i dont have an iguana but i still hate to take the sides off .. it gets awfully dusty up inside as is .. i fried a computer w/ static electricity once from vacuuming up inside it .. & also 3 of the fans are on the sides .. seems like the fans are better than having it open if its 30^oC in the room i guess that 50^oC inside the case isnt too bad then .. It is not about other peoples babies, cats, dogs or whatever. And yes, it is perfectly OK to create a page (which belongs to a real life account) for a FICTIONAL CHARCTER or PERSONAL BLOG of your character. It does not violate FB TOS. Second Life is your "new chance" at life, its does not have to be your first life (RL), may be modelled after your RL but your SL is a SL. You don't want to mix your personal & family RL stuff with SL stuff that most likely will not interest them. So, if you have one post your URL here, if you don't maybe you should consider creating one if you plan to keep it updated. In mine I post stuff of my daily life in SL, places I discover, hotspots, and stuff found in the marketplace. Others have pages for their Second Life fashion, clubs, etc. so let's keep it going. There are already a few of us. You do NOT and must NOT create a fake account. Simply under your personal account or whatever account you have, visit the link at the bottom that says "Create a Page" and in the main category choose "People" (something like that) and in the subcategory choose either "Fictional Character" or "Personal Blog". If you don't want people to know which RL FB account owns your page, don't do LIKE to your own page. Whatever you post in your Facebook Page is done by default under the name you gave to your page. how do we know youre not a spy for FB trolling for fake FB pages so you can report them & have them banned? ppl would hav2 be crazy to post their urls Jeanne
  5. does anyone know how hot their computer gets? my brother recently built a new computer for me .. i paid him $1K for it ~components cost $924 & the rest was for his trubble~ .. it had an AMD Sapphire GPU .. it was really nice 'cept it started freezing when i was streaming music w/ SAM & running Firestorm @ the same time .. it wasnt a virus & the memory was ok .. so my brother had me download FurMark & do a stress test on the GPU .. he said that if it ran for an hour the GPU was ok but it froze in 10 minutes .. did it twice & same thing happened .. so he said the graphics card was bad .. he got a return merchandise # from AMD & i returned the card & was w/out a computer for 2 weeks .. they sent a replacement & it was DOA .. wouldnt even boot the computer .. so in disgust i went to Best Buy & bought a Nvidia card i really couldn't afford .. but @ least i had a computer that worked after that the problem was that even w/ the new Nvidia card the computer still froze a couple times .. so my brother suggested that i download CPUID HWMonitor .. so i did & was shocked to see that 1uv the cores got 93^0C !! almost hot enuf to boil water !! he said it was the 'northgate core' & it made sense it was the hottest cuz its in the middle but still .. thats WAY hot .. what was interesting was to watch what happened when i logged into SL & started doing stuff .. temps would go up by ~20^oC !! apparently SL is really processor intensive & generates lotsuv heat .. the computer is supposed to shut itself down when it gets too hot but apparently it just freezes .. so even if heat fried the original AMD card the replacement was bad to begin with .. im never doing business w/ AMD again anyway .. that CPUID HWMonitor was eye opening .. what iv done is taken my computer outuv the desk .. it now sets on top of the desk & is in the way but im not putting it back inside the desk til winter & before i do im goin2 drill some holes in the wood next to where the fans are .. i also installed 3 fans in the case .. in addition to the fans that came with it .. & have a big fan blowing on the computer .. it now runs ~20 -30^oC cooler & hasnt frozen .. even when im dancing in a SL club, streaming w/ SAM & doing other stuff @ the same time so what im wondering is .. has anyone else had heat trubbles w/ their computer? does any1 else monitor core temps w/ CPUID HWMonitor or any other way? are air temps of 50 -70^oC inside the case normal? any hardware geeks care to comment on this ?? But then, should I have been surprised? After all, this is the only verification I have had to use on other websites to access adult content. LL could argue that it isn't their responsibility to be doing what parents should be doing; ie having parental control filters set by the owners of the computers. Here in the UK, there is a lot of discussion about this; parents are being urged via television programmes, schools, information leaflets, printed media, to ensure their kids are safe, and not able to access adult material. In most case kids are far more tech savvy than their parents are .. leaving it up to parents to keep their kids outuv places adults have decided they dont belong simply doesnt work .. When my 2 younger brothers were teens they laughed @ the filters our mom & their school tried to place between them & 'age inappropriate' online content .. the things they pulled were outrageous ~everything from hacking their schools website to ripping off credit card info .. Sounds to me like the current discussion in the UK you describe isa bout 20 yrs too late Jeanne

Fps of ~12 was common in dance clubs even w/ the beta viewer. This was with settings in preferences & draw distance set low. Immy has something relevant to say about this. Then we should take up the mis-use of the term with Linden Lab. They initiated it to describe a particular way of making objects for Second Life and everyone including you hopefully knows what is being talked about. Perhaps you could suggest a better word or terminology to use? Terms are arbitrary anyway. SL has its own lingo which I ~as a newbie~ thot was weird. WTF is a "prim" ennyway? 16. Masami Kuramoto wrote: cinda Hoodoo wrote: The trend has always been, those that can pay and are willing to, for services or products, and the free loaders. From an economic perspective, the term "freeloader" is ambiguous because it doesn't say anything about a resident's level of participation in economic activities. A content creator selling tons of prims and spending all his earnings on other people's prims is as much a freeloader as someone who does not buy and sell stuff at all. From Linden Lab's point of view, both are equally "parasitic" because they spend no money on the platform. Successful merchants who cash out more than they spend are actually worse than freeloaders. Their trade surplus must be offset by someone else's trade deficit, otherwise the in-world economy would implode. For the owners of Linden Lab, Second Life is a profitable product as long as the sum of resident spending exceeds the sum of resident earning plus the cost of running the platform. The result of this model is that SL business owners find themselves in competition with Linden Lab, because every dollar that is cashed out decreases Linden Lab's own bottom line. Maybe this explains why Linden Lab has very little incentive to help you become a successful SL merchant. Those who blame their own business failure on freeloaders have not really understood how this platform works. Think of it this way: Every freeloader is one competitor less to worry about. This is an insightful post Masami. You explain how LL's business model sets up competition between LL & SL business owners, which explains why LL is unsympathetic & unresponsive when it comes to addressing business owners' concerns. Of course they aren't going to attend to the things business owners complain about when doing so might harm their own bottom line. The thing I think you need to realize tho is that it's LL executives & shareholders who are the real parasites, much moreso than SL "freeloaders." Execs & shareholders rake in profit while contributing nothing. The freeloaders freeload with LL's blessing because that's the way they've decided to run their business. There's no use resenting freeloaders when LL allows & encourages the freeloading. Resent LL ~if you want to~ because they're the big parasites & they facilitate small scale parasitism by others. Or better yet, just enjoy SL for what it is & dont worrya bout it .. :catwink: Jeanne

Of course there are.<< Of course there are & why shouldn't there be? LL has set SL up so that the only rational way to play it is to play for free. There's no real or tangible reason not to play for free. The few perks granted to those who choose to pay to play don't return value for what they cost. There are plenty of freebies, plenty of places you can hang out, plenty to do.. without spending a cent on SL. It's entirely possible to hava whole lotta fun in SL absolutely for free. >>The ones I realy pity are the officious oafs who claim that anyone not having a premium account and willing to pay thousands of L$ just for the privilege (non-refundable of course) of looking at a sim aren't decent residents and should all be shunned.<< You should read the chpt. in "Cows, Pigs, Wars & Witches" about potlatch & conspicuous consumption & the ape's drive for prestige. The trend has always been, those that can pay and are willing to, for services or products, and the free loaders. The trend for the last few years has been, that SL is a "free" source of entertainment like TV. While i provide small rentals for incredibly cheap prices, we have to constantly beg for rent to be paid on time, or for a tenant to even let us know they have moved on. We have and do take care of our long time customers, and have made sure they can keep their homes, even when RL has dealt them some financial woes. The ones in SL i feel the worse for, are club owners, that have to throw money at residents to even get them in a club. I am sorry, but if i have to pay someone to come and fun, forget it. I have seen full stage entertainment in SL walk away with less than 1K in tips with over 50 ppl attending the concerts or venues. Entertainment needs to organize in SL and make everyone pay to enjoy being entertained in SL. There is really no reason for traffic any longer since the MarketPlace has put most malls out of business. At least entertainers are willing to work for their money, which is more than i can say for 80% of our residents, that hoard around freebie chairs like moths to a light bulb. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy an occasional freebie from a store i have spent money in and stay in their group, its a nice perk for loyal shoppers. So yes goodwill is running thin, of course the entertained that don't tip (freeloaders) are very happy and content in SL, while the entertainers and creators are pulling their hair out trying to make a few bucks to pay for rent and other things they need to put into their businesses to keep the doors open. Linden Labs is a corporation. Corporations exist soley for the purpose of providing profit for shareholders & corporate executives. Corporations & their decision makers have no goodwill towards even their employees, let alone those they wish to obtain profit from. Corporations may act as if they have goodwill towards their customers, simply for the sake of getting more $$$ out of the "marks." Corporations will say & do anything for the sake of profit. Even break the law if they think they can get away with it. Linden Labs only cares about their own profit, not that of content creators or vendors within SL. They will server the interests of content creators & vendors only if by in so doing, their own interests are served. If LL perceives that their own interests & the interests of those attempting to do business w/in SL conflict, they will serve their own interests, not yours. LL decision makers have decided to make SL available for "free loaders" to play for free. On the surface this seems to conflict with their own profit oriented interests. It must not do so, tho, or it wouldn't be allowed. LL execs must feel that by allowing the majority of players to play SL for free, they ensure high concurrency in the hope that a small percentage of "free loaders" will buy premium accounts, buy L$ &/or pay tier. People like me, tho, have made a comittment to not spending any real money on SL. To my mind, the "goal" of the "game" is to have fun, have a quality experience, have a nice looking avatar, etc., without spending a cent of money doing so. Some have said that pulling this off means that I have "won" the "game." Of course, they have said this derisively, with the intent of mocking us "free loaders." But I take it as a compliment. Truly I have "won." I don't fret over paying tier, obsess over a "business," or do without in RL cuzuv the $$$ I spent playing SL. So as far as I'm concerned it's all in fun & I'm not concerned about any perceived lack of goodwill on LL's part towards anyone. Jeanne
  25. Boudicca Littlebird wrote: I have noticed that the goodwill between some and the lindens is very thin, is there two groups here, one that come to SL to be entertained and another group that come here to do business, what I have noticed in these threads is that those that run business are very stressed and on their last legs as regards goodwill, whereas the ones here for just entertainment can see nothing wrong and dismiss the other group out of hand, am I wrong or is this a trend? From my own point of view I am here for business, I find the lindens aloft and out of touch, like they judge all people by how much money they can get from them, directly or indirectly, I have also found they use some residents as spy's just to ask questions while they listen (do I give those a disjointed view on life, lol), the thing about people focused on money is that they are very backward in all other areas, but that is my view do any others share it? I think you're right Boudicca. As soon as someone starts regarding a game as being a business, they turn greedy & crabby. Seems to me like this forum is dominated by ppl who think of SL as a business opportunity for themselves, rather than as a game to have fun playing. Jeanne
