Does Linden Lab allow residents to create inworld games that use an in game currency that players use to purchase in game items? I am aware of several games that have a concept of experience points or in game currency, but these currencies typically are for bragging rights only. I don't see anything in TOS that prohibits using an in game currency for purchases.

On an unrelated/maybe-related note, I learned today that the minimum bet at the high stakes blackjack table at Helios Casino is 800 chips.

If it is gambling related, I guess the answer will be no.
When in doubt contact LL support directly.

Obviously don't take my word for it, but it's my understanding that as long as the things you can "buy" with your "currency" are no-transfer you're definitely safe. The ifs/ands/buts for other scenarios are a bit complicated and probably not worth the hassle of figuring out, since L$ works perfectly well for almost all use-cases.

Don't know why, but I'm reminded of those sales gimmicks (advertised in comic books) from my youth, "Sell 50 boxes of Greeting Cards, choose any of these prizes!"

You mean you didn't get the "See Through Clothing" Invisible Sunglasses, or the fish tank full of Mermen?

I instantly felt old when I read this (cause I remember them). Stop that!

I also remember Showbiz Pizza where you'd pay money for tokens to put into games to win tickets to cash in for crappy prizes which you couldn't just buy outright with cash.

Talk about a runaround/ponzi scheme...
