The operative phrase there is 'in good faith,' which I interpret to mean a sincere positive intension for that interaction. Speaking to people as if you intend to get along with them long-term, and so you're not saying or doing things that you cannot easily turn around and reconcile. There's an important difference between an argument or feud and a war, and within civil society you don't settle differences with scorched earth. That's something else, something more like civil war.

I think it would be wise to steer clear of general historical and sociological questions.     There's clearly a discussion to be had about cultural pluralism but this is not, I fear, the place to hold it.
