Can intense lag (I’m talking about running on average of 1.5 FPS at most sims that aren’t empty) also be the result of internet speed? Or is the issue more complex than that? Could it be the computer or the sim itself? I’m not tech savvy so I don’t know much about this stuff, but even at low settings there’s still tons of lag. I wonder if internet connectivity and speed can also effect this.

Yes. You can have the fastest computer but if the data coming to it is running at a trickle you'll see that as "lag".

Thank you for your response! And yes, I figured that might be a contributing factor. Lately my lag is worse than it has been a few months ago, which I’m starting to believe not only is due to my laptop but also the fact our house connection isn’t the best at all and tends to go out at random.

While sim content can definitely play a role in lag, if you are consistently getting low FPS everywhere, then it i more likely due to your internet, unfortunately.

You can pull up the stats monitor -- Ctrl+Shift+1 and see what your ping time is like.  That display will also show you some info about sim actions/events, but it isn't really obvious as to what specifically to look for.  If you are using Firestorm, you can click the ? at the top of that window and it will pop up a help browser telling you about some of the fields - which might give you an indication of what to look for that might be adding to your issues.

Oh, and this can help you troubleshoot connection issues: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/

Thanks a ton! I started having a feeling about this considering at my home, my FPS actually goes up from 1.5 to 12. And I’m sure the bad connectivity makes more populated sims more difficult to run. I’m sure there’s other issues that ties into the lag, but glad I have idea what’s mostly causing it. ?

Can you post your system information?
In the top menu bar of the viewer, Help -> About Second Life (or About Viewer Name if using a third party viewer).
Click the "Copy to clipboard" button & paste all your system info here.

Sure thing! My laptop isn't meant for SL to be fair. It's very old and on top of is still running Windows 8.1 because when I downloaded 10, my system acted strangely so I figured it best to revert back and never decided on using it after. On top of an already crappy connection, I don't believe my laptop is honestly helping the situation. But, weirdly enough I felt as though it's gotten worse. I've deleted temporary files and other things I believed might've contributed to general slow down on SL, but nothing seem to work. Clearing cache, setting to low settings, etc.

i'm more surprised you can stay online at all, your connection is very bad.

Go wired, restart your modem/router, if the packet loss keeps this high it might be at the other side of the entry point and a case to contact your ISP.

When I ran a ping test, it says it’s fine. So, who knows. ?

packet loss, it's not unusual to get disconnections if that's reaching 0.5 % already. It simply means you don't receive 7 out of 100 packets  .. UPS/DHL would get sacked for such results.

Sorry, you lost me. I’m not good with technical talk. So, much of what you’re writing I don’t honestly understand that much of. I just know I’ve been dealing with more lag than before and was wondering about some factors that could be causing it besides just running SL on a rather old laptop.

Actual frame rate lag or just stuff moving slowly? There's a big difference

if things in game are moving super slow or jumping around, it's likely an internet problem

if you're seeing the menus stutter to open, a recordable low FPS, it's almost always a graphical problem

a bad internet connection isn't going to lower your frame rate, the onboard graphics would continue to render what it does have available and you'd get about the same fps

im gonna say it's that APU that I'm amazed can run SL at all, if you just downgraded to 8.1, make sure to update your drivers for that APU, I see a "windows graphics driver" version being mentioned and not an AMD driver

tldr you're probably running on the default windows graphics drivers, update your APUs graphics driver

My laptop originally came with Windows 8 and then when 10 was released I was prompted and asked if I wanted to download it, which I did. I didn’t update any drivers and none of the drivers will update in the first place. They always say they’re already up-to-date. Guess it’s a number of things, really.

To be honest, I’m not sure if other games would slow down my laptop as much as SL does, but then again I don’t play any other online games other than SL. It takes a lot away from the experience and because I’m not tech savvy, i honestly have no idea what’s wrong or how to fix it. Sort of up in arms at this point.
