Sometimes the homes become unavailable due to popular demand but usually they become available again shortly after, like a day or two, sometimes longer.

Eta: Just checked, there is one style available at this moment.

https://land.secondlife.com/en-US/lindenhomes/land-selection.php

Check every once in a while, it's pretty sporadic.

With any luck they will discontinue this feature.

Popular though it may be, it has harmed mainland and estate land quite a bit.

LLs gets good buck out of it from people who would have gone estate rental going premium instead. But only up to a point - as they then lose each time a sim gets cancelled.

Premiums are more profitable though.

http://catnapkitty.wordpress.com/2012/03/14/mainland-versus-estate-which-is-the-better-bang-for-your-buck-to-linden-lab/

*****************

"If all mainlanders owned only 512m of land… paying 6/month. Then 49.2 of them would be one estate account, but they’d only burn up 38% of a sim – all remaining land on that sim would be added bonus."

"If we assume the average mainlander owns 2048+base 512 (probably they own less, but some own vastly more…) for $15/month – and if we assume every one of them paid annually (the lowest rate – $6/month)…

295/21 = 14.05 mainlanders to pay the same in per month as one estate holder, burning up 28774m (44% of a sim). All mainlanders after this are added bonus."

*****************

- But they need to get people out of the linden homes and onto mainland, or mainland collapses. We already see a massive amount of vacancy on mainland - and that makes SL look empty, which causes people to lose interest.

Linden homes are 'on direct' more profitable than even mainland - they fill up better. Packing a lot of people into a lesser amount of resources. But they consist of less vested users - users who, lacking community around them, will not become as inspired to build up, expand out, and attract more people in.

Its a harder argument to make though - because it requires looking at psychological factors. Knowing at what point vacant mainland becomes a danger is not something you can pull up a chart of numbers to find the answer to.

If you are premium... and cannot find a linden home, just go find 560m of mainland somewhere and buy it for your own private group of you and one alt. Or buy 512 in your name. You will have more control over it anyway.

I disagree, i think its a great feature and hope it continues and grows.  I have no issues on my newby home and i love that the outside is controlled.  Its also a mega bargain.  I see no purpose in having more, since most that use them are likely like me, they just need a private place to go to open boxes and try on cloths.   The newby home was the incentive that turned me premium.

It was at best a poor solution to the real problem of a lack of any zoning on the Mainland.  There should have been SIM's designated residential only.

Outside of the questionable added value of the Premium sandboxes (they are only an added value if you need them) and the piss poor jokes that the Premium gifts have been, you are paying more for your Linden Home than what it could cost you to rent.

Right now I am renting a 3600 sqm parcel on Mainland  with  ~800 prims for $1200L a month.  So I am paying around $5.00 a month for six times the space that you are getting.  And I can actually build and furnish something there.

 Its also a mega bargain.

And that's the problem in a nutshell: Linden Homes are cheaper per prim than comparable Mainland, and the next step up is costly, so people get stuck in their Linden Homes, thinking they're getting a good deal--and, for an entry parcel, they are.

There are very affordable Mainland rentals, as Perrie described--but again, they can't really compete with Linden Homes at the entry level if one offsets the cost of an annual Premium membership by the value of weekly stipends. (That's a very different calculation for monthly and quarterly plans, for which renting is cheaper even for relatively small holdings.)

Originally, Linden Homes were intended to be a low barrier to entry "gateway drug" for land ownership, but the detail of how the program was designed doomed it to fail given the tier structure for regular Mainland and Estates.

I'm quite sure LL never intended to print so many Linden Homes; I'm not so sure that any surviving Linden still realizes that all those Linden Homes measure the program's failure, not its success.

Almost every Premium member I know  has a primary residence either on Mainland or an Estate and uses their Linden Home for the purpose of extracurricular trysts.

most people i know are like Kristin. they get when they first start just so they can have a private dressing room

+

about dressing rooms for new people. i tell you a story

on my old account in 2007/2009 i had a 512m but i never use hardly ever bc i was mostly do the Mentor thing

so i made a dressing rooms on it. was called Temple dressing rooms. was a platform in the sky and i put some sit teleporters in it. when you sit then it wiz up to a place in the sky and rez a little 10x10 box room. people can stay as long they like in it. also had so the person who sit the rezz/teleport could control the room

the main thing was that anyone who come into the room without your permission you could kill/send them home. they get no warning. just click and they gone. people liked that. not that hardly anyone need to get killed way up in the sky. was just the reassurance that you could if you needed to

i even made so they could kill me as well bc was their privacy was more important. i not scrape anyone either. only ever got their key when they sit so to give to the room so only they can control it. and the key delete with the room and when the teleport gets told to go back to the temple by the room

could also teleport in your friends to help you with your stuff tho

i arrange the rooms on the parcel so that each had its own 4x4 rez plate for boxes (3 prims)

when you left then the room derez and sit teleport would go back down to the platform ready for the next person

+

the neighbours was pretty cool about it. i was also happy to change the rez place if they want to be on that level. also bc the rooms werent permanent then the neigbour could auto know was someone in the room when ever it appear

had 8 rooms on the parcel to start then i downsize to 6 bc

i thought maybe only 10 people a day or 20 maybe on weekends. so wrong

with only 6 rooms was 300 sits average a day on week days. 500 on weekends

at busy times for USA and Europe was people waiting in the temple for the rooms to become available

it got so many people coming that i start feel really guilty about my neighbours. like was filling up the whole sim quota sometimes

so i had to put a guard in that put everyone on the temple platform on a 3 minute time period. just say to them in the chat that guard will have to send you home in 3 minutes if you not in a room before then and please come back later on. best to open the Map to see the green dots before you come to check if any rooms available first

people where quite good about that. it also stop a lot of the squabbling that used to happen if was a line of people waiting and someone queue jump

i never advert it or anything. just list in parcel search and people just found it and came

+

i thought about do again this time when i came back. but is linden homes now so. and also can get a ordinary parcel for buy/rent quite cheap. like only 1L per sqm or prim and less sometimes. not like in them days when cost 5 and 10 times as much

Yep.  Introducing Linden Homes put LL in direct competition with other customers/users, some of whom own mulitple sims.  I don't know this for sure but I've read on the forums over the years that LL said in the past they'd never do that.

Sounds like a good idea 16. I wonder if I ever visited? I tried to visit the other dressing rooms places once in a while just to see how they were doing. Each place was slightly different.

Yes there always seemed to be a big need for dressing rooms. Less so now, with other options and more places like that here and there. When I joined SL the only ones were in malls, and very laggy and not many of them. And shared, no privacy available.

I never wanted to allow room sharing in mine because it was misused. I considered putting them in the sky or making it similar to what you described but decided I liked the garden aspect too much, and plus, I didn't really want to encourage people to share or stay for hours with friends - it was a dressing room place, not a hot sheet motel. hehe

Sounds like yours was busy enough they didn't do that type of thing. I hope for your sake! At least if they did though no one could see or hear it.

Could be. Are they empty but owned by someone, or are they owned by the Lindens? Mine stayed empty for like the year or so I had mine.

Haven't made a close study of it but from what I can tell some of each. I gave up my own LH a while back, to free up the tier. I liked having it but since I was always busy elsewhere I really never used it. A shame because it was a nice one, with pretty sakura trees all around and near a park of trees. I like the Linden Homes idea.

yes lol

but is not much you can do when can only rez 3 prims (:

at the start i had some issues with bikeshed sniffer types. but i wasted them everytime when they came round and i catch them

was also some working girls start to come as well looking for the sniffers. but i just chat them quiet in IM and ask them to be good. was lots of them worked the clubs. and the rooms actual gave them a quiet place to fit on their new stuffs. same with the newbies guys who buy their bits for the 1st time. was lots of them in those days. they quite bashful they are most of them. they all just sneak in when is quiet and woosh way up  (:

i also deliberate put on a G parcel and said in the chat message that it was G land and that nobody is to get naked at the Temple. only in their room. so end up all good

also i never accept any money off anyone and i never sell any adverts or even a tipjar. some people try give me money but i always say is ok i dont need it and they can buy something nice for themselves or a friend in the shops

i not accept money bc i not want to feel under any obligation to anyone. so everybody learn pretty quick. if you play up at my place then i will waste you. like i not parcel ban. just do silent killing of them. am not going to give any greifer a free SL advert on my parcel ban list. lol not

was a few guys who try get bossy to me at the start when they was waiting. and some of them do the trash talk to ladies who came as well. so i shoot them right off the platform which was at 750m. lol. was long way down and if they was still there and hit the ground then my orbit guard on the ground kill them as well by chuck them a zillion sims away in some random direction jejejejeje (:

it not take long for people to know was a safe place to come and can be like really private and no hassles for them and they can stay as long they want. so they came

when the sky limit went up to 4096m then i was able to put them all 513m apart in the sky. so anyone even on same parcel that want to cam perv had to mod/hax the viewer xml file to allow that. was only a tiny handful of people who knew how to do that kinda thing in them days

i get asked about that by lots of rental skybox people at the time. like how come if they in a room then they cant see the ones above or below them. so i just tell them about the 513 spacing. and they go oh! cool and they end do themselves with their rentals. so that was ok as well

just say about the numbers

on the weekends was average 500 for both days combined. what i learn from that is that more people shop on weekdays than on weekends

+

also about your own place

parcel visibility is available now not like then. if i was to do again and made on the ground then i would def use that by cut 8x8 squares. is actual big enough that when put a pose stand in the middle to stand on

can also put a guard in the room bc can deed it to the parcel. so can only kill them who come onto the parcel/into the room

is how mine killer worked. the sit/teleporter/chair was deeded to the parcel. when they click the walls of the room to get the menu then the kill button/script communicate on the rez random channel to the chair who the target was. the chair done the actual killing part. not the room bc it was temp rez and not deeded

I like your stories :)

Didn't know about the 513m spacing. Thanks for that info.

Haven't heard the phrase bikeshed sniffer but I think I got the idea what it is from your next paragraph after that. ha

I might've had more trouble cos it was a bigger space to hang out on and could rez more prims, I don't know. I caught people rezzing beds...walking in naked with partners...stuff ilke that. Kind of funny in a way. What gets in people's minds? Lol. I mostly wanted to point them to search and how to use it. Some also went and used a neighbor's BR which made me very annoyed - that's just rude.

I couldn't be there all the time and didn't like the idea of kill or orbit or set on fire so I just banned, it mostly worked. :P Gotta do what you gotta do. If they disagree let them have their own place and pay for it and see how their own patience is.

I had no time limits either. When lines began I just got more land. I also got land for a perimeter later so if they were ejected for intruding in someone's room, they didn't land on someone's house. :P

I had no tip jar for the first year and a half. So many people asked for one I finally put one in. It was mostly the same one percent of visitors who ever tipped. I appreciated all of them including 1 $L tippers. Means heart was in the right place and it's more about thank you. I also appreciated thanks in IM or note. Sometimes it kept me going after some griefers, or just people who wanted to be mean and who apparently thought, I'm a doormat because I had one on my land. :P

But the total of tips for 3.5 years or so would not have even covered a fraction of my landscaping budget; I did my best to keep the place fresh. Changed scenery by season, decorated for every holiday, had gifts not only from creators but also at holidays, a lucky dip with things I bought in it. I was surprised most people didn't do the lucky dip but there are so many freebies on SL.

I also was surprised more content creators didn't know about the place. I know for sure I helped with retention in SL (so did you 16) but above all I helped people shop and spend more. Lol. With a place to try things on, some would visit moree than once a day, with new stuff, and it wasn't all freebies...I saw what they were weraing when they came back out again. So, I'm still waiting fora  thank you from all those merchants...hehe. I will wait a long time I think. I didn't advertise either 16 but the best form of ad is word of mouth anyway.

I am glad to know you did that. Very nice thing to do 16. And probably you learned a lot about SL and human nature while at it, yes?

Melita Magic wrote:

yes same like you. can learn a whole lot about people when you got dressing rooms

+

one thing i learn was that people actual wanted to come bc was exactly what they wanted. a simple private no fuss place out of the way where they could get changed and checkout their new skins and outfits and stuffs. and no hassle

was quite a few people chat me about that as well. they liked for the plain utility of them. bc even if their bf/gf comes to help them then they cant do anything in the room anyways and so they not have to say No to them. when all they really wanted at that time right then and now from their friend was actual real help with fitting their outfits and stuffs. which is why they ask them to come the room in the first place

the other thing i learned was that modest people RL are the biggest group of users of dressing rooms in SL. the next biggest visitor group are sniffers who think is some kinda hookup joint. same like they think skin and lingerie shops are. so i made the way i did for the modest people. and design in a way to active discourage the second group from coming

so plain functional rooms. no frills

+

it took a while for people to get all this when i first made. but only about 3 months and then ever after was hardly no trouble ever

mostly bc people had to find themselves in the Search to start with. on the dressing/changing room keywords. if you are a modest person then you will do this. you do search and find a dressing room or quiet place for yourself inworld. is why i end up with lots more people came than i ever imagined i think. bc thats what they actual were. modest. and i made it exactly for them. a plain old dressing cubicle just like in RL. not a room to socialise in

+

the other thing was that i used to get quite a few IMs from people saying was always full on their timezone. and can i help them find other rooms. so i end up making another rooms as well on another sim. that got filled up pretty quick as well

so i keep a folder of all the other rooms in SL that i knew about and give to people who ask me. was like over 20 at that time. and they had lots of regular visits as well most days

20 dressing rooms? Really? I only ever found a few that really were. Then there were a few more which were really just a sandbox with a pose stand or something like that.

Of the ones I liked, I remember one that had round pods in the sky. Guests landed on dock. Panels showed if the pod was occupied. If not they could teleport up. Then it was plain in there with a pose stand. Maybe some freebies. I can't remember for sure. There was a handful of pods there.

Then there was one for a while that looked like a dressing room in a department store but was sort of by itself. I think a large store was next to it. Not sure if they were owned by the same person. Outside the dressing room was a plant and a mirror. I think it was one room and anyone could walk in. But it was cute the way they did it.

About six months after I opened mine there was a dressing room place in conection with a property company. Again it had a panel they clicked to teleport up. The rooms were very nice. One had sand and waves in it. This one didn't stay open very long. I went to check it out because they visited CR and told me "we are scoping this out so we can compete with you." I thought, go ahead.

My favorite was and is an underwater dressing room. It is built like a row of mall dressing rooms but it is separate and under water. It's owned by a Japanese mall. It was always quiet there. There was no clutter of freebies to get and landmarks and no one hung out bothering anyone (at least not when I went.) The door closed but I am not sure if others could get in after you. I did see two dots close on the map in one room.

Then I remember one that was always full with all genders and types of avs, so really, no more privacy than a hub. I won't describe it more because I didn't think that one was very good. (I know it wasn't yours 16; it was on land.)

Other ones that were there a while and gone now: A 512 freebie house on a 512 lot. A 512 house on a small natural island parcel. And various ones that were hard to get to or in the midst of a mess or a sandbox or some other thing (they were not really standalone dressing rooms places.)

And of course a lot of shops or malls offer a room to change in. Not all allow opening boxes but now some bags can be worn to be opened. I know boxes could always be worn to be opened but it isn't convenient if it wasn't scripted like that and not all new people know how.

The thing about running a changing room: Unless it's monetized somehow, it's all out of pocket; and a lot of effort and time needs to go into it unless it's just going to be left to the wolves. I'm sure people appreciate even the ones that are rezzed and ignored since at least it's a place to go.

Those are the ones I remember. Were any of those yours, 16? I am curious when you had yours and how long it lasted.

Why do so many peeps find issue about a linden home lol. I took one up when I wanted a place rent free and it was good for for that. Would've been nice to have more prims but oh well. Now I want it again and as a PREMIUM user I should be able to get it but none are available. AND homes should be available for ALL types, not just the fairy or asian ones.

  • 2 weeks later...

sorry i not reply earlier. i missed this

mid 2007 to 2008. i had at Star Scythe and Songnisan. i called them Temple Dressing Rooms and Temple Changing Rooms. so could find one or other depending on how you search

+

i actual gave the scripts and rooms and teleporters to this lady who had a shopping center. i set up for her. but she not want to cut her parcel so that could put the Dressing Room name in the parcel search. she want to keep the traffic added to her main shopping parcel. i try tell here that wont work bc people use the parcel name search to actual find these kinda things. and if is not in the name then they cant find. so they wont know. she not listen to me. and end up with nobody came

+

the pod ones you mention in the sky are at Powder Mill (191, 188, 24). next to where the Gnubie Shop used to be. they still there. they run by skygirls group

the main dressing rooms that most people knew about in them days was at Noob Island

lots of shops had like one or two rooms in them days. used to be 1 at Chilbo Community sim back then when Chilbo was only a 1/2 sim town. dunno if is still there either

+

edit:

actual must have been until 2009. bc i just google my avatar name that owned them. bc i used to have a blog on that name. on the google i find Hamlet quote a blog article i wrote once about bots and dwell. he do in 2009 and i forgot about that

them bots used to be on Songnisan

was a tip Songnisan and Star Scythe in those days. like all cut to pieces and grief advert farming. so i get the 512 on them and put up in the sky (:

+

edit more:

yes was 2009. i forget these kinda things. was 2009 bc that was the year the SecondLife Mentors closed down. i used to be a mentor on my old elizabeth account. and i close the rooms bc i left SL after that. i had the rooms on my tabliopa account bc i not want to mix them up. and i never tell anyone that both was me

As far as I know the limited number of house designs was a conscious decision made by Linden Labs. The Linden Homes program is meant to act as a stepping stone between homelessness and getting you on the tier ladder. So you have limited choices and a limited virtual living experience as long as you stay in a Linden Homes region. If people want to improve their virtual living experience then they should move out into the world and find/create/buy a better place.
