Hi everyone!  I want to relate to you, something that happened about 6 months ago at the spaceport.  As many of you know, I rent out land on the shores of the sim.  I had some land available for rent at that time. (Full now.  All rented out!)  I got a IM from a good friend.  He had a friend, a lady, who wanted to rent a parcel.  The lady was just 3 days old.  Here is to the best of my recollection, the conversation that went on.  Names changed for TOS reasons.

Johnboy:  Hi Hippie!  How are you?

Hippie:  Good, and you?

Johnboy: That's good.  Do you have a minute?  I may have a person that wants to rent.

Hippie:  Sure.  Need a tp?

Johnboy: Yes.  Her name is Poofy.

I proceeded to teleport Johnboy to my location, and when he got there he teleported Poofy to join us.

Hippie: Hi Johnboy!  Hi Poofy!  Good to meet you Poofy.

Johnboy: Hey Hippie!

Poofy: (silence)

Hippie: I understand you want to rent some land.  I have 2 parcels left for you to choose from.

Johnboy:  YAY!  Could you show us?

Hippie:  Yes.

Poofy: (silence)

Hippie: Follow me please.

I proceeded to walk toward the rental office, where all the rental payment boxes are.

Hippie:  Here is where you pay the rent.  You can pay by week or month.

Johnboy:  How much for the parcel.

Hippie:  7000 L a month.

Johnboy:  Oh that is a good price.  How many prims?

Hippie: 937.

Poofy: (silence)

Hippie:  Please follow me, and I will show you the parcels.

We proceeded to walk towards the parcels at the north west corner of the sim.

Hippie:  Here is one of them.  The other parcel is the same size, and has the same amount of prims.

Johnboy:  Sounds good.

Poofy:  I like it!  (At last she spoke)

Hippie:  Poofy, how big is the house you want to put out?

Poofy then wears the house she wants.  I can't see a thing.  House if everywhere!

Hippie:  Poofy.  Don't wear the house you rez the house to the land.

Poofy:  What is rez?

Hippie:  You drag the house from you inventory to the land.

Poofy then detaches the house from herself, and immediately re attaches it.

Hippie:  No Poofy.  Do not wear the house.  Drag it from you inventory to the land.

Poofy then detaches the house and rezzes it to the land.  It is huge!  Way to big for the parcel in question.

Hippie:  Poofy.  That house is too big for this land.  You would need an estate for that house.  Do you have another house that is smaller?

Poofy:  This is the house I want!  I don't want another house!  This is my SL, and I should be able to put out any house I like!  Also!  Why do you talk so much, and not listen to me!

I am beginning to get just a bit torked off if you get my drift.

Poofy:  Also, I don't need to pay for land.  This is my SL and I can do what I want!

By this time my friend Johnboy is facepalming, and IM'ing me "Sorry Hippie.  I did not know she was like this."  I told him I will try to work it out.  By this time Poofy was wearing the house again.

Hippie:  Poofy.  Don't wear the house.  You rez it to the ground.

Poofy:  If I want to wear my house I will wear my house.  You can't tell me what to do!

Hippie:  You can not use your house if you wear it.  Please rez it to the ground.  Let me see if it fits again.

Poofy rezzes the house again, but not on the parcel.  She rezzes it in the middle of the spaceport.

Hippie:  Poofy.  You can not rez it there.  This is spaceport land, and is not on the parcel you want.

Poofy:  This is my SL and I will put my house wherever I want too!

I had had enough!  I IM'd Johnboy, and told him that this was not going to work out.  He agreed.

Hippie:  No Poofy.  You can not rez your house where you want it. And you must also pay for the land.

Poofy:  Go to hell Hippie!  I can do what I want.

I then banned, muted, and ejected, and deleted her house.  I am a very patient man, but that was all I could take.  I told Johnboy, please don't send me anymore renters, unless they have there wits about them!  Sigh!

Peace!

Hmm, Poofy sounds like a deliberately created griefer person.

The lines that Poofy delivered sound too ridiculous and contrived, like someone parroting/parodying  SL & LL ad-text for effect.

Or, it is possible, that someone is that dense...or the person is a child.   (although even the children I know are not that clueless, which leads me back to my first reaction, of a griefer/prankster.)

That very well could be Cel.  I can't belive that anyone could be that dense!  Sigh.

I did Keli!  Everyone gets unblocked on the 3rd of May every year.  I have not heard from her yet!  HEHEH!

Peace!

Well it is a very funny story Hippie, I love it. It just goes to show that there are people who think they can do whatever they want, but in SL there are ways to get them out of your hair if you choose to do so.

In contrast:

As a helper in-world I met a lot of clueless newbies, many of whom just would not listen and a lot that would not exercise any patience to learn the basics so got very frustrated trying to do things 'their way'.  But I will always remember one guy:

  • He explained what he was trying to do (learn to build)
  • He politely asked for help or instructions where to look
  • He listened to advice/instructions
  • He tried examples
  • He asked about mistakes/misunderstandings without immediately panicing or getting frustrated
  • He tried again
  • He learnt the basics of building in an hour or so
  • He was happy
  • He was popular

He was, of course, too good to be true.

He then said he was 15 (in the days when there was a separate teen grid)

So then we had to try to get hold of LL to move him nicely to the teen grid and not to hold it against him that he'd been on the adult one.

:-( Ah well, I hope he was one of the best teen-grid builders

Hippie, I can completely sympathize.

Having just a few days ago dealt with a person quite similar(though not a female, and not a noob).

I don't rent land. I do occasionally allow friends to use my land.

A few days ago someone was in the store doing a hunt, and I happened to be there checking on something(a dino glitched and apparently was rocking itself off kilter, still don't know how, but, thats a different story). We got to talking and he decided to open some packages and was quite pleased that he could. Well yeah, I don't really prevent that. I expect that most use common sense(and really, most do, I don't let the bad apples spoil the bunch). We chatted a bit more and then I had other things to do so I parted ways while he continued opening packages, cleaning up after himself as he went(cool, another one with common sense). Roughly 12 hours later I come home and said gentleman has made himself a home about 10 meters above my home(ftr. my store is 300m in the sky, my home is on ground level). He took all but two prims and was having himself a quaint little get together. A quaint little adult sleepover is more like it, a very vocal one, in local chat. Now not only has he decided to, well abuse the ability to rez objects, but he's decided to squat on what he KNOWS is not abandoned land.

Scratch head

I IM him, ask him how his evening is going, if his little shin dig is going well. Mind you this sim already has a club on it, and has it's own issues with lag and whatnot occasionally from that. My store does not get a ton of traffic, barring hunts of course, so I don't usually use even my own fair share of resources. But I did very much worry this gentleman alone was using the entire sim's worth of resources. Something I'm used to others doing, but not something I'd ever do.(still bothers me to even think of what sort of footprint he was leaving during the time I was away to be honest, I don't like disturbing others, or using more than my fair share, at all). He had no issues at all telling me about his grand idea to set up home there when he saw I had "all these great prims going unused" (I had 154-ish). Then he decided to invite some friends over, and seeing the "furniture and stuff you have"(aka the eh hem, rug, and intan ball in my otherwise empty home)" thought it would be great to throw our own orgy. He told me he thought as long as the land had room and prims, people are free to set up home anywhere they want and do whatever they want.

Hmm, now I could have gone any number of ways with this. I went this way though. I asked him, politely, to please keep the vocal levels(as in actual voice, which frankly sounded worse than low budget porn), and local chat down. I let him know he had one hour to wrap up his little sleepover, and that I would greatly appreciate it if he'd make certain all of his stuff was picked up at the end of one hour. Because this is not just my business, but also my home, and not just an open invitation to all. I apologized if that was the impression he got, though.

He still decided that wasn't good enough, went off on me like, well I don't even know what to call it, started trying to rez even more stuff(which he didn't realize was throwing his own stuff back at him, not mine) and throwing a literal temper tantrum verbally and physically. It was actually somewhat funny to watch. I tried to explain that his views on how things are supposed to be, are way off, and I tried to explain it as if he was a noob, despite the fact that he's a good few years old. Didn't work, he wanted to hear none of it.

Eventually I banned, muted, returned, you get the picture. I have since had to ban a few of his guests, which actually saddens me, I can count on one hand the number of people I've had to ban over the years before now :(

Some people truly do feel entitled to do whatever the heck they want, wherever they want to. This guy could very well have simply been a jerk, playing some kind of joke, or really that clueless, I don't know. Frankly, I don't care, either. I was quite nice, and gave ample opportunity, I thought anyway, but such is life, right? You can't educate them all. I'm all for trying, but sometimes, you really gotta know when to fold them.

Sounds like an alt or a joke or a kid or all three.

I love these renter hell chats though. I wish Prok would post hers more often. I don't know how landlords have the patience!

LOL Clarissa!  Poofy was a winner for sure.  I do have great patience, but I had come to the end of the line with her!  HEHE!

Oh that is a great story Tari!  You can try and try and some people just don't get it.  My place has always, and always will be new resident friendly.  Most of the new visitors do get it, and behave well.  It is just a few bad apples that ruin it.  Thanks for sharing your great story!

Peace!

Okay the name "Poofy" was a big warning sign. It was a good thing you had nothing else to do but watch the house "attach, rez; attach, rez; attach, rez". lol.

I received a "friendship" offer the other day, so I checked the profile. The pic of this guy looked like an ad for male attachments...I asked if he had anything else to offer and declined. Some people just don't understand how this works.

Don't you just love SL:)
