  1. If they take photos there for commercial use they are making money off the sim. My question would be: Do they ever tip the sim owner? We had someone who told us they were using our land for their photographs and photography clients. How did we know? They complained. They wanted us to landscape it a certain way to improve the quality of their photographs. Did they ever tip? No. If more land owners are saying "no photographs allowed" ask yourself why.
  2. I saw a photo of an avatar with comb-over balding hair. I also have seen avatars in beards. I'd like to know where to find such things, please. In world is better, so I can put them on a styling card to places newbies can find. Not all newbies want to use or can use the marketplace. (It's much easier with payment information on file and most don't have it.) I need these for a shape I'd like to make. Thank you!
  3. When you say vintage, what do you mean? 1980s? 1960s? 1940s? 1930s? 1920s? Vintage is anything 20 years or more in the past. By hipster what do you mean? Can you give some links to pix or examples of what you mean? Thanks.
  4. You can wear a makeup tattoo if you have viewer version 2 or higher. Otherwise, no, almost all skins you can buy are No Modify, and it's good they are. Making a good skin isn't easy! Or everyone would do it. To put the face of a real person on a skin texture you need to make the skin. That is called Photoskinning. A lot of skin makers begin that way. Some of them draw over it, some just more or less blend it together. You could try to pay a skin artist to get a custom skin made but it will be very expensive.
  5. Biped or quad? Zooby has a cute fluffy black or white quad cat. Metamorphoses has some prim cats that are cute and have a cute HUD. And are cheap. I got other ones at a Japanese store but will have to tell you next time I am in. Unless you don't want quads.
  6. I'd certainly consider unsolicited criticism, and the word hillbilly, an insult too. I still remember in my early days when I felt proud of my avatar and once in a while someone would walk up and hand me landmarks without so much as a hello. Or "advice." "Here's where to get some better hair." I always wanted to tell them to stick it. Politely, of course. *grins*
  7. There really is an art to making a shape. If you are on a budget, there are many places that offer either a free gift shape, or a free shape in a lucky chair, or even all their shapes free, such as Miss Murder. I disagree that a shape maker's time is worth any less than a house builder's time or a texture maker's time. Most of us can do those things too, but not all equally well.
  8. "chinky eyes?" I have a teen male shape in my shop. It's called Evan. If that one does not suit you I can try to make something else. Why don't you post links to pix of the RL look you want.
  9. ToriaB wrote: does anyone have any recommendations for child-like shapes? (and skins) I offer a free child girl and two free child boy shapes at my place at the moment (I might add or subtract more later.) It's in my Picks. Heaven's Gate Neo has cheap skins for kids that look nice. There is a free one in their group gift. There are lucky boards. There are skins for about 300 $lindens last time I was there. If you buy the skin the shape comes with it. Mother Goose's also has some free child skins in their lucky boards sometimes. And their prices aren't bad on the other ones. If you want to be anything other than a white little girl/boy I'd look on Marketplace or Robin Sojourner has some choices as has been said. (One of my little boy shapes is an Asian boy but I'm honestly not sure how good it is...which is why I might retire it.) Just remembered, MrSigmund & Tuty has some child stuff I think. Including a child AO. A lot of the kid malls or adoption agency sims also have all kinds of kid freebies.
  10. Again with the harsh tone. See, I felt this was a thread in which everyone had an equal opinion about what makes a good shape. I didn't notice anyone ask for criticism of each other's opinions or shapes, or what makes a bad shape. But then I'm just a hippie.
  11. Yes, your comments did sound harsh, being based, as they were, from one or two sample photos. Being such an expert on the mesh you should well know that some of the photosphere poses out there can distort things. Also, IMO, an avatar should be taken as a whole, not be the victim of a microscope. Yes, there are limits to the mesh, but one could point out flaws in any shape out there. It's a bit derogatory to say a shape has a 'bubble butt' when in fact, if you looked closer, you would notice (hopefully) that one leg is extended in front, and the backside is pushed out, (as in the paparazzi pix) and the angle of the photo is such as to maximize or emphasize that aspect, as it were, of the avatar. Isn't the most important thing whether or not the avatar is proportional? I'm very proud of that particular shape, as it happens, because I managed to make a body type, with the existing basic mesh, which has somewhat of a pear shape, full bottom included, without any of the pointy results of overextending the sliders. I think all body types should be represented in Second Life, and while I know popularity does not count for much with some, that shape happens to be one of my more popular ones. The "cleft palate" you keep harping on is not part of the mesh either (I am surprized you do not know that), but is merely part of a skin that I still feel is fabulous and creative. I found the skin somewhere at a nice price, and made an avatar to go with it, for a hunt with a star theme. The note card with the shape told something of the genesis of the supposed creature, and it was a one-off, never will be available again, so you needn't worry about running into too many of the apparently offensive felines on the grid. I don't see your point about the cleft chin; but no matter what, I feel there is a way to express one's criticism of others' creations without being quite so blunt or harsh, especially when it has not been called for. And I will leave it at that.
  12. I feel compelled to illustrate my aesthetic. People in Second Life who are critical of flaws in shapes, seem to aspire to the Golden Mean. Which is all fine too. But variety is the spice of Second Life in my opinion. It's fine to not prefer or like something, but to say it doesn't exist or isn't valid as a shape? I ask those people... Women do not sometimes have an ample, rounded backside? ("Bubble butt" as some have said.) Men do not sometimes have a long chin? Attractive women do not sometimes have a long, angular face? There is no such thing as a big redhead with a 'square blocky' face? Fantasy creatures can't look any way we want? All felines are Neko? I'm just sayin'.
  13. Gee thanks Pussycat. Wasn't expecting that ETA: I use a freebie photosphere, and the poses often distort and or add artifacts. If I edit the pix too heavily to remove those, it could give a distorted idea of other parts so I leave it alone. I remove bumps from ankles or wrists, that's all. The blond you criticized is my SL shape (see icon pic.) The too high neck on the other (black haired) one is mostly due to the pose - it's nearly twisting her head off. But yes that pic in profile is one of the more doll-like shapes - not meant to be realistic. People tend not to like bullfrog throats, although I agree that if it's impossibly high it's distracting. The kid with the long chin, fair enough. But he looks exactly like a RL high school friend and I didn't want him perfect. In the end it is all a matter of taste, besides, that's what modify is for. Illustration: Here is the same shape you said had a totally blocky square face, in another pose. (That pose made her neck stick out like a turtle's fwiw.) But I didn't post in order to have things sliced to ribbons. I posted for fun and to show how many varieties there are - something for everyone, from a high necked Barbie doll type to a plus size shape. These were just samples to illustrate the word Variety in Second Life. The kitty shape was not a Neko and I'm not sure what your criticism was about on that one. I might not wear your shape as is either but I wouldn't shred it to pieces on a public forum.
  14. If a hair has a box on top of it, it's a hair demo. It wasn't free, it was just to try on. You'd need to go back and purchase the real one. You can find free or cheap hairs in Second Life, though. Look for the group join panels in your favorite hair shop or ask around for the freebie blogs and groups.
  15. I have not found a flat pair of sandals, ___ Try Shiny Things or Earthstones. If you want one with a foot in it, try SLink.
  16. Variety? Any type, any wish, can be fine, if it looks like a cohesive effort in the end. If you want to be a Barbie, be a Barbie. Just be a cohesive Barbie. If you want to be thin, fat, old, young, male, female, butch, femme, whatever color or ethnic background...look like you meant it. Look like you knew what you were after. And of course, proportions. But proportions themselves are relative in a virtual world. Legs are usually a little longer, muscles broader, waists slimmer than in real life. If you are talking about a totally realistic shape the rules for that are different. And the mesh does not support every effort perfectly at this point in time. So you have to go for an illusion. But every type is possible. And why shouldn't it be.
  17. Came up with my own solution! I told her I was muting her and then did. If they won't cooperate there isn't much choice left. Your spammer sounds worse. Scammer too.
  18. I logged in to some spam I had been meaning to turn off for a long time. I sent the note card back to the note card creator. I put a note in it to please un sub me. I don't remember the last time I went or shopped there. I did touch it a long time ago to get a group gift and I'm not sure it ever even came. They have moved a few times. They don't send spam that much so I forget about them meantimes. Today I went and waited and waited and I never saw a subscription prim. I did not have all day to wait that is why I sent the note. I thought I asked nicely. Here is what I got back. Wouldn't it take just as long to honor my request as to send me a snarky reply? LOL. I will shop there again never. the subscriber is near the entrance Clarissa. since I have not subscribed you but you did, I think it is up to you to unsubscribe
  19. Probably shouldn't name the place you were ejected from since it's a complaint.
  20. Hey Blazer. Check out the "I'm Cheap and Easy" thread in Fashion forum. Marianne Little just posted a really great goth look that might suit you - just wear a human skin instead of a vampire skin. It would help if you posted a pic of what your av already looks like. Then people can post some suggestions for you.
  21. Finding quality male skins free is anything but simple. I'll amend this post later to the shop and SLurl and remove any mention of my shop. But right now I am not in world and I can only say, please go to my shop, (in my picks, all freebie) and if you get the free shape named Dwayne, the style card has a landmark for a free male African-American skin. The owner assured me that all his free skins are legal.
  22. Ian Undercroft wrote: Sadly so far as my L$ balance is concerned I seem to be on the slippery slope of buying out the shop! Hell - with that at the Meeroos I'll be destitute soon! Not to be OT but what is a Meeroo? I saw it on the main page here, but never checked it out.
  23. Bare Rose has a few things like that. They've been around since almost when SL began so you might've seen something of theirs 2 years ago. Their staff is really good with questions if you go to their main store.
  24. And the pix are great too everyone. I'm not worthy! This topic is not worthy! Keep 'em coming!
