In a shoebox, on a table, in a dark corner of the garage, was an odd goggle-like machine and a box of discs. I flipped the thing over in my hands looking for operating clues. There was a slot for loading the discs, two eyepieces, a single control and a fogged window. I inserted a disc and peered carefully into the eyepieces. Holy Virtual Epiphany, the view was astonishing! There was Captain Nemo and two shipmates, peering out the window of a submarine at a giant squid... in 3-D so lifelike I felt I might fall into the scene... Umm. That's not a squid. That's Dave 32 unless I miss my guess. Doing quite well, from the looks of it. I love this whole thread. I have to say Tari's post just made my entire weekend (and it's only Saturday afternoon!). Viewmasters were so much fun (we never had one but a some of our friends did), and it really tickles me to know that somewhere there are kids still enjoying that marvelous imagery. Just looking at that last word it is so easy to understand how the word imagination came to be.
  2. I'm not restricting anyone's right to do anything. I'm saying the OP's behavior was wrong (WHICH, by the way, was my answer to the question she asked in her OP—that's what the forum is for: asking questions and offering opinions). Wrong according to SL guidelines, wrong according to how people interact with one another in society. SL/RL, doesn't matter. What she was doing was wrong. And by the way, I know exactly what SPAM is. Even if I hadn't, it's been defined earlier in this thread. 'Unsolicited' be your key word there. eta the parenthetical, since I doubt you see the forum concept as I do. You clearly don't see SL the way I do, given your use of the word 'game' to describe it.
  3. No, it is you who are spouting nonsense. These aren't friends and colleagues. These are people randomly encountered in a sandbox.
  4. entity0x wrote: Please don't listen to the Nazis. You know if you're spamming or sharing. THere is a big difference between the two. I very much doubt that, given that what she described herself doing in the OP was exactly that. If she had spoken to people and said, "Hi, I made this dress, if you like it I'll give you a landmark for my shop", at least people would have known what she was about from the start. That might be slightly annoying, just as it would be in RL—I don't really enjoy people coming up to me on the street and offering me flyers, for instance—but at least that way everyone would have the option of saying 'No, thanks' and ending the conversation, without having to go through all the "Do you like my dress?" business and trying to find a way not to seem to mean to someone who appears to be totally clueless.
  5. Yep. That's like the definition of comfort food. And in fact I believe most recent pic from KarenMichelle (two posts up from yours) captures that event taking place. For me, the one that is absolute catnip is the tuna melt. Those I have to force myself not to think about sometimes.
  6. Well Syn's link should ease your mind about SL itself, but one of the big boys that got hit by this was Yahoo, and a lot of SL'ers use Yahoo mail for their avatar accounts. I'm not sure if there's enough info lying around in your message folders to allow a hacker to work back to your SL account info, but just to be on the safe side if you have a Yahoo account you should change your password. There are other big hosts that were hit (not Microsoft: apparently if you're using Hotmail you're in the clear) but for reasons obviious to even the most casual observer the Yahoo notice got my attention. I never ever use the same un/pw combo twice—as in on more than one website—but if you have done that you might consider changing up some passwords.
  7. yes, yes, in. Quatrafund. I've been waiting and waiting. 954 out.

  9. See, that's what makes it so irritating. I know which one is correct. It's just that my brain glazes over or something and I 'see' the right choice even though I actually typed the wrong one. 11. I visit the General Discussion forum (and some others) for information, education, and entertainment. I usually can only drop in for brief visits, just to catch up with threads. I have to say I am very disappointed in all of you for these last few pages. Do I need this? Page after page of carefully thought out comments and responses that I not only have to read carefully, but that I actually have to THINK about? Where are the lolcats, for crying out loud? For those who would be interested to know....there's a Trash 80 under my bed. Still in the box.
  12. Phoebe Avro wrote: The main problem i think is LL seem to have a different idea of what SL is than its residents do, that's not surprising since Lindens don't spend time in SL I have never understood why LL never advertise SL. That made me smile, because I remember Deltango saying something to me just like that, a few years back: "Sometimes I think LL just doesn't get SL". These days, I think she may not use the 'sometimes', and I tend to agree. It's like they have no idea what's going on here. I found it encouraging that the new CEO actually had a child who'd been inworld (and misbehaved, apparently). Perhaps things will change.
  13. Patience has a lot to do with whether this is an issue or not, too. Patience and possibly experience. I've gotten so snarled so often in so many not-quite-error-corrected-properly pieces of code that I've developed habits. When something goes wrong for a non-obvious reason, I routinely shut down and start over. Right from probably my very first crash, I automatically shut down the viewer. A lot of times I'll stop and go refill my beverage or something before starting back in, just to give the electrons time to settle out. As a result, I've never seen the message the OP talks about and I had to read a few posts to know what was meant.
  14. Thanks! You'd said that you thought it was now a Preferences setting but I think you mentioned the Hardware tab and that's probably the only place I looked before I just went ahead to Debug. So one slider, one check, and out.
  15. I agree with Laskya's comments about the way you introduced your survey. I wish you luck with it, although I actually don't qualify as a subject. I'm using my SL avatar as a more successful attempt to express an RL gender different from my RL gender than I could in RL. If that sentence is confusing don't worry—I tried to make it as confusing as possible. I was just having fun. I'm part of that large transgender community in SL that Laskya mentioned. I agree with what the others here have posted as well, particularly the comments regarding how gender reversed avatars are accepted without issue. The people I know all seem to be of that attitude and I'm personally convinced that most SL residents share it. I know there are some for whom other people's RL gender is a really big deal, but I cling to the belief that they make up a small—if noisy—fraction of the population. All that being said, inside that volume of cyberspace that is Second Life is the best place to do your research. Log on, drop in, and rock out.
  16. Madelaine McMasters wrote: Woo hoo! I've set MaxFPS to 24 and FSLimitFrameRate to TRUE. I'll spend the saved watts on my electric blanket. Winter still has it's teeth in my ankle. Thanks, Sassy! ;-) I had to steal some time to get inworld and try this and saw no change. I looked and didn't see anything to toggle to apply my MaxFPS but I see, now that I've actually read your comment, what I must have missed: turning on FSLimitFrameRate. I'll take another look tonight. I'm going with 29 to match my SL age.

Three full years. It was as always nice to see Void (who's been gone almost that long) but I could have done without being reminded of the lovely Dogboat. What it should get honorable mention for is going to a 2nd page after being resurrected from a 3-year death... LOL. I blame myself. Well, partly.

  19. I'm replying to Maddy but primarily because she's at the top of the list; I'm also replying to Freya and Sassy and Perrie as well. Thanks, all. I suppose this is the price I pay for having deliberately ignored anything to do with computer/digital graphics despite having been involved with things technical for many years. Every single product I was ever connected with used only the most rudimentary graphics. Monitors were just another way to display system information and in a great many cases that information was primarily text; still is, even with the things I work with now. I spent my concentration on learning how the stuff that mattered worked. The downside is that I didn't learn much about other things technical. The upside is that I was really, really good with the stuff we were making. I will for sure lock my Nvidia frame rate down if for no other reason than to reduce power consumption.
  20. Sassy Romano wrote: Incorrect there Crim. Some effects such as animations, llTargetOmega, viewer view itself aare all client side rendered and thus will achieve whatever frame rate the graphics card can achieve. These have nothing to do with the number of processing frame events that the simulator performs. I have a question about that. I just built a new PC and it's a major upgrade—mostly because my old one was majorly outdated. The first time I logged in I tweaked my graphics settings up, turned things on that I'd normally kept turned off, and then opened the statistics bar. I almost freaked out because the little red line in the FPS meter was missing. I thought I was at zero. Turned out it was at 150 something (I was standing in a fairly plain room and there were no other avs on the minimap: with my old PC I'd typically see about 50). I knew that that kind of a frame rate exceeded anything I could SEE, but does it actually increase the speed at which other functions happen? From your comment it sounds as if it could.

Lawsuit wouldn't have a chance: it's not like Facebook's reputation could get any worse. That's not what I read! Having looked at all the facts, I think they will be laughing all the way to the Bank. You may never be able to post a link here again if you keep this going. I did feel I needed to check the Hoff Crotch one in your earlier post (just to be sure of things, of course) but these last three look too dangerous even for a wary browser like me :-).
  22. Hah. You jest, but in fact 8-track lives! A British farmer had an 8-track DVR and recorded four or five years worth of Alistair Cooke's 'Letter From America'. They were cleaning out the barn and found a box packed with the tapes (he'd forgotten he kept them, apparently). Restoration is under way. Story here, if you're interested. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-26692193 ETA: I originally thought maybe it was just something that was used only in Europe or the UK, but the more I thought about 8-track DVR the more I thought that couldn't be right. It's not. I went back and looked. He recorded the audio. Still, it is a good story.

  24. I just upgraded my PC, so everything's faster for me now. Prior to the upgrade I had not noticed lag being any worse than usual. MP is horribly slow but it always has been.
