  1. I don't know about traffic so much but maybe investigate the business districts owned by Island Oasis Properties. People that find themselves on one of the sims owned by IOP tend to have L$ to spend so it is not as likely you will be getting a bunch of broke n00bs wandering around asking what they can get for free.
  2. If an article is about SL and written by someone who an oldbie and knows SL well, then yeah I might take a peek. If an article about S: is written by someone who really isn't in the know, I tend to avoid those cause it is often written from someone with newbie syndrome. It could be yet another article about how SL is full of predators or how evil we SL addicts are.It could be someone who set up an account, played for a little while got griefed, and now hate SL. Being griefed is a passage. So yeah for me - if it is someone with at least several months in world, I will listen to what they have to say but if it's (weeks, days) then heck with that.
  3. With Linden homes, yeah at least the house itself doesn't count towards the 117 prim allowance. The problem though is that some newbies jump in right away, go premium, get a house, and have NO clue what prim counts even are, let alone how to strip unnecessary prims out of "mod" enabled furniture. In SL, buying a nice house is not expensive but the land to put it on often is expensive to even rent. L$800 a week for a 2048 sq meter and 468 prims is on the cheaper (yet close to average price) When I signed up I noticed this "go premium" thing but never did it, I wanted to find out what SL even was to being with. Back when *I* was the one asking how to get money and hoping no one noticed I was bald cause my hair vanished somehow. a Linden house, while ugly, is not a bad deal if you need something very basic. Like just a place to change or unpack without being razzed by griefers. If you need something big and fancy though, Linden houses are not a good choice. It is like buying say a car in real life. Do you really need or want the monster SUV with every feature known to man or do you just need an "A to B" car. Linden houses are more-less "A to B".
  4. I wonder just how many SL'ers come in and use the name "Babygirl" followed by numbers? Or how many people have the name "Boo"
  5. got killed by a sculptie hook. Well did someone at least AR the incident? MY poor little avatar is scared now cause she thinks someone is gonna try to kill her with a sculptie hook. Thanks a lot, now I will never get her to go to bed
  6. if you had money (even if not $200) to buy a stupid skate board, why not just try to pay down a bit of whoever you owed money to? but yeah by the US$, $200 is about L$50,000, not really that easy to cough up.
  7. Dres, are you telling me that even in my oldbie-ness, I been had? Cause I , well, I almost was ready to believe it, I was in denial, the first stage. OK I feel better.
  8. Every site out there thinks it is going to be the next facebook. Well look at FB, biggest game in town, everyone wants a piece of the pie. The problem is that when LL let the kids in, well, SL is not something for a dumb lazy kid. Us oldbies know there is a serious learning curve. I mean given the way things are, they cannot simplify it without pissing off creators and vendors. Kids do not want to learn anything. I mean all they want to do is have their noses up FB's butt so they can post up to the minute replies on what they are doiing. Well that and there are tons of guys in SL who try to lay with every female avatar on there. People don't like being harassed by that. As far as virtual worlds are concerned, there are a ton of MMO games that run on the same V1 viewer as SL, but even the closets second place never has more than 1,000 people at any time. Second life is leading the way right now for virtual worlds, but virtual worlds are no where NEAR the size of these real social networks where you can see poeple post their ugly spouses and kids and brag how they went to NASCAR or got a job at some hole in the wall place or say they had to get a colonoscopy cause they have an ingrown wart hair on their butt. OK, I will take the virtual world where we can pretend we are rich, beautiful, popular, and never a bad-weather day exist. Sure it is fake but a good fantasy beats the hell out of RL any day.
  9. I heard this story about two people who fell in love in SL. I guess they were on some G rated sim, something of a populated and "welcome" area... Anyways they got to talking, she was very sweet and he was very smooth with words. They started meeting at an adult place, a very romantic park in SL where they could get to "know" each other without the constraints of G sim rules. I don't know the avatar's names. they might as well have been Casanova Suave and Goddess Aphrodite. Her avatar had a face that would make a grown man cry from it's striking features and beauty. Her body was of a goddess. She looked maybe 21. Her hair was not of prims, but of rays of the sun from the Goddesses. His avatar had a face that reflected pure masculinity, strong and handsome, and he was tall, and had just enough body hair. Not overly but just enough to say, "sexy man". He looked maybe 30. (a sexy 30, not a "let himself go" 30) His hair was so handsome that running your fingers thru it would make you instantly climax (especially if your name was Edward Cullen since he likes men) So the romance went on for a while, they divulged their deepest fantasies, bought all the things needed, set up RLV and all that silly stuff... This was true love, until - He saw her RL photo and things were different. She was a little over 21. OK a little over 26 (her dress size) but age wise, she was closer to like 50 something. She did have the body of a 21 year old model, but was buried under enough weight to create a whole nother woman. Gray hair in rollers, and she just wasn't that hot... He, on the other hand - bald, overweight, lived in his mom's basement collecting SSI, in his late 40's, and enjoyed the smell of his own sweat socks. He was 5 foot 5 inches and had a bit more, well, a lot more body hair than a sexy 30 year old man would. his picture was not of a man standing next to a red corvette but next to a rusty ford pickup. For some reason, they say, this romance fell apart faster than setting a pile of unlinked prims to physical. Is this really possible in SL? I mean come on, I know SL defies reality in many ways but this is just stretching it.
  10. Now at work today I was on a company computer, watching some REAL boring training videos... I thought about DL'ing SL but I didn't want to lose my job. I was just thinking of how awesome it would be to play SL on a work computer. I guess not.
  11. The prim counts are reasonable in the houses, given the size of land they would fit. With the alpha windows, that is kind of hard to get around though, I mean I have seen houses that entire walls are a window and yeah I am aware of the alpha problem. One thing with furniture though in a lot of the houses i have seen, it looks pretty bad, like an afterthought. I have bought houses and back when I actually cared about doing my own decor, most of the existing furniture was out, which is kind of why I am wondering if others tend to ditch the existing furniture. BTW the fact that the houses would be unfurnished would be reflected in the price.
  12. SL 2 will be Revenge of the griefers. All the people banned from SL, the hardcore griefers, etc, will take over and the rest of us will be armed with weapons and missions. All hell will break loose.
  13. Well once again - not good to post too much info on the web. The RL part of your profile - don't be slapping your FB or RL photos. Bringing SL'ers together? OH BOY! MORE people on my friend list that I never hear from til I delete them! How exciting! As far as bringing more people into SL, well of course LL wants to do that. The entire web world sees how big FB got and everyone wants a piece of the pie. As far as RL people know I play on SL, it is kind of my dirty little secret. I can just see them "googling" SL and the first thing they run into is another story about someone caught age-playing. The problem with all this new web culture, "connecting with people" or whatever is - in the real world, people want friends and a social life yet they don't want to step away from the computer to do so. It is like, "Oh I want a social life, but I don't want to go anywhere but my house"
  14. Not yet, I am wondering if what I am thinking of is even realistic before I do all that
  15. IMVU bites. I tried that once, and I think you have to buy "credits" (whatever their version of L$ is) just to TP to other places.I played IMVU all of 20 minutes I think.
  16. I have shopped different vendors, and noticed this - Some houses use a lot of sculpts and house controls, thereby increasing the number of positioning and other scripts and unlinked parts (since phantom and non-phantom cannot seem to esist in the same "object", correct me if wrong) Some houses are really nice, but seem over-primmed and over priced. Saw one L$8,000 house that had over 500 prims. The nice-ness of the houses seem to have little to do with the prim counts. See, when I do my houses - The windows of course have selectable textures and work independently. (so if you want to draw the blinds in some room but not others) The doors are linked to the house and each has their own script to operate. Megas are used where possible, I do not use any sculpts. (yes sculpts save prims but I cannot make those well enough) Everything in the house is linked. Houses would be copy/mod/no trans. With staircases, any builder knows those are a nightmare no matter how you slice it (no pun there) Mine tend to be either a textured plank or notched blocks. (yes noobish but even notched blocks don't hog any more prims than a sculpt with the respective invisiprim planks) One house I built, the outside looks kind of "boxy" and like maybe a GOVT building, it is 30 by 50, 3 floors, 85 prims, no furniture. The inside has an antique ballroom look. There are 15 scripts total, one in each of the 4 doors and the other 11 in windows.I may install some lighting in it before it hits the market (if it does) So just with your average house buyer, what all are they looking for? I like the houses I built, but wondering if they would sell or if I need to over-complicate them like some of the other buiklders tend to do.
  17. I have noticed that individuals give better service. Even if it is someone with a small chop it is usually better.I think because they are trying to make a name for themselves and want to really prove their worth. YOu take these bigger companies in SL, often times you cannot even get ahold of the creator if you have issues or questions. I will say the above two are not always the case, but kind of a general rule. I have had bad service from "people" but then had good service from some big established places like Depoz or IOP. Given my druthers I would take an individual though.
  18. My poor little avatar just bought a neato device - a virtual paper shredder. This 3 prim device is capable of shredding 10 notices at a time. She is proud of it. It features two spinning sculpted blades, and a container. the container self-empties into the lake next to my house. too many is is I would say - more than one a day. I mean sometimes I would get like 10 a day or more. So yeah I had to turn that off cause what if I left SL for like a month and came back, would I have like 300 notices piled up?
  19. I don't get it, some groups have a really bad habit of sending out way too many notices. Now we all know this is a problem cause when they created V2/Firestorm, in the low right corner there is the envolope and you open it and all notices just show up on a list, so you can start at the bottom and just keep hitting the X to delete them. Some video about V2 where Torley Linden is narrating, he says, "Oh my god too many notices!" and tells how it is easier to rid them quickly. Course all of them are basically clumped into there so you have to be careful but anyways - So why do some group owners have such a habit of sending out notices for every little thing? They have to know it is spamming. Strip clubs are the worst about this. I wonder if it would slow down spam if LL charged a "spam fee" of like L$100 for each notice listed by the group? The size of a group doesn't seem to effect how many notices sent. I rent from a property group where the owner has a few different sims, some residential and some commercial, and I never see any notices, which is good. Yes I know you can disable notices in your own preferences but that is not the question. Question is - why do some groups insist on spamming too many notices about the same subject?
  20. What an Erin believes about SL - It is addictive and tends to rob RL. It tends to feed people's fantasies to the point that they forget that SL is way prettier than RL My poor little avatar is my buddy. I think about her even when not on. I love her as a sister. That I have lost part of my mind cause I love some computer generated character. That my avatar needs to get out of the way of the screen and to quit giving me dirty looks.
  21. probably not so much cause SL is something that only us serious SL'ers could truely understand. I mean unlike the mass of other BS out there like facebook, MSN, yahoo, etc... SL is a web society all it's own. I mean yeah you COULD invite people to SL but that is only if you really wanted to answer things like - "What am I suppose to do, how do I get a job, how do I do teh sects..." I mean we were all noobs at one time and got help here and there, were raked over the coals, could not find our hair, etc... Second life just isn't like any other social network or game out there. I know some get steamed when one calls SL a "game" but there are a lot of gaming elements in here.
  22. You may need to see an in-world dermantologist.
  23. ehh I would say the percentages are much lower than that but it does make the same point. I heard somewhere that part of the SL appeal is success is so easy. Much like one place I shop where they have nice (but not always perfect) houses for less than L$500. Comparing RL prices to SL prices does put things in perspective real quick.
  24. Deltalngo probably just made 1,000 enemies with that post! People forget the biggest privacy setting that was invented since the spoken language came to be - sealed lips. Sealed Lips is a program where if you don't want toe world to possibly know, don't say it to begin with. Yeah it is funny with facebook, it seems people are finally figuring out that FB is bad news and now wanting their privacy back, So Mark Zuckerberg's plan kind of screwed up didn't it? Also, isn't twitter kind of taking over as the flavor of the year for sheep to follow? I mean at one time it was AOL, the yahoo, and then myspace kindaasorta got big, then facebook, but now it seems twitter is the latest. IN all these things, I don't spread my SL life over anything, SL is SL. My avatar does not need her own facebook. I spoil the little b**** rotten, but she is NOT getting a facebook, twitter, myspace, RSS feed, or whatever the latest sheep site is.
  25. PAthetic. Some people think SL is Jerry Springer. If he is starving in RL, just how much L$ does he really think ONE script will yield? I mean that must have been one hell of a script if it was worth enough to sell for food.
