  1. You need the security updates. Without them you will eventually end up with all sorts of problems as hacker's bots try to zombify your computer. Also, others are running with all the updates so it is not a Windows Update problem. That the problem is in sync with an update just means that the update revealed a problem in another part of the computer. To get it fixed... First run a virus scan, then a maleware scan. Malwarebytes is a good choice. If you need help with viruses and malware visit Major Geek. They have an excellent forum and troubleshooting info, plus you can get help. Once you eliminate viruses and malware... check your video drivers. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. If the viewer will at least show the login screen, get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. When the viewer won't run, use a command prompt and dxdiag to get the information. Without driver versions it is hard to know what the problem may be. You can also get a clue of what the problem may be by looking in the SL log. You'll find that in: C:\User\[win_login_ID]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\logs\SecondLife.log Look at the end of the file and search back for warnings and errors. This may give you an idea of the problem. If the info over geeks you, post the error lines here. There is a crash log too. But, it is too hard to read.
  2. Check that your computer meets the System Requirements | Second Life. I think the graphics card is the problem. I think ATI 5000 series are the minimum. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. If the viewer will at least show the login screen, get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. The info from the viewer gives us all the driver versions we need to have an idea of what is happening. If you can't run the viewer at all, use a command line prompt or Start->Run to run dxdiag. That should give you the ATI driver version. The OpenGL version is important too. This type of failure is common for a system with inadiquit video card. Since the machine has Windows Business, it would be reasonable for it to have a very low end graphics card.
  3. Try sending this to commerceteam@lindenlab.com and see if you get an answer. Don't hold your breath waiting for an answer.
  4. There is an API on a URL that posts the number of people on line when querried. So far this month it has peaked at about 66,000. You can check concurrent users stats at http://dwellonit.taterunino.net/
  5. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. Get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. I am guessing you are connecting via a home connection. So, the problem is likely your ISP or AV. It sounds like you have done all the usual tests. But, read through Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection to be sure. Since you have changed DNS servers that problem is eliminated, it is mostly on Mac's anyways. Use the URL login.agni.lindenlab.com with NSLOOKUP. I suggest you open a commend window and type: login.agni.lindenlab.com. It will report back which DNS servers you are using, which just confirms your change. Next type in login.agni.lindenlab.com. This should return an IP address or addresses. If that fails, the problem is in DNS. Since you have changed DNS, that is unlikely. But, eliminate it. Next, we would normally use TELNET to connect to: login.agni.lindenlab.com. But this is an SSL/HTTPS connection. So, browsers and telnet aren't going to work... at least not as expected. You can try to install and use openssl, a telnet like program for SSL connections. But, you can get away with using: telnet login.agni.lindenlab.com 443 The command screen should just clear if you can connect. Since the SSL stuff is not encrypting and dycrypting the server can't understand your keystrokes. Normally a couple of Enter/Return presses would get some type of prompt. That won't happen. So, as long as you don't get a fail to connect error the connection is happening. Close the command window. I expect the telnet attampt to fail. If it does, something is blocking 443. This could be your firewall or antivirus. If you can do online banking and connect to other HTTPS sites, then this is a local problem with your AV or firewall likely being the problem. If you can't connect to banks and HTTPS sites, then it is either your modem or ISP that is blocking. You then likely need to white list the SL Viewer with your Av & Firewall. Be sure it did not get black listed somewhere along the line. Hope this helps.
  6. It is a beta grid. Lots of testing going on there. For several weeks there have been problems. Avoid changing your password. That seems to trigger a load of problems right now. Often thengs you save to inventory in one secession are going in the next. Things recently updated from AGNI to ADITI inventory refuse to rez... Last Location on login is not working... most of the time. There is a JIRA... but, the Lindens cannot reproduce the problem, so they can't fix it. See JIRA SVC-7727 If your ADITI Lindens get below a certain limit they are replenished... usually. Also, on a password change, they replinish. Plus you can always ask a linden in one of the ADITI user group meetings to replish your Lindens.
  7. See if this updated Mesh Clothing Tutorial helps: Second Life Mesh Clothes Blender 2.6 Setup 2012 Tutorial. This is mostly about getting Blender ready for clothes making in Second Life. The first page of the tutourial has an index or may be contents list is more accurate. So, you can see if it is what your are looking for. It contains a couple of pages on the default avatar and shape. Another page on how to get custom shapes out of Second Life. JASS does sculpties and Mesh, if I remember correctly. Avastar does more with Mesh and Animations. While I think they are both great programs, I made the tutorial so you can learn to make clothes without having to buy anything.
  8. It depends on the creator and how they sell the mesh item. Try Redpoly for an example os a mesh that you can show as the creator. One way to sell mesh items is to sell the Collada (DAE) file in a note card. You can then save it to your computer via copy paste and upload it to SL, which then shows you as the creator. Additionally you can import it into Blender to work with. From Blender you can export it as an OBJ file and take it into Photoshop Extended. (CS4 to 6). Some creators sell only a mesh item and the UVMap or as some call it: a template. Just depends...
  9. Yes. See: Second Life Mesh Clothes Blender 2.6 Setup 2012 Tutorial - Specifically Page 2 for a list of files and information about them. Page 3 has information about the differences in the files we call 'default avatar' and the idea of a 'default shape,' which seems to have confused a number of people. All the links to the files are there.
  10. Valerie is probably right, a connection issue. But, it may also be a region problem. The region may need to be restarted. Recently there have been some restart issues and the regions around a region fail to show. You will see them in the World Map, but you can't walk, fly, or tp into them. If the problem persists after next Tuesday (server updates day), consider filing a JIRA report. To decide if it is your connection, read: Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection To decide if it is just the region, visit Pooley, Furball, or any empty and deserted region. Once there you can try the steps in Lost Inventory and Missing Inventory Fix – Help to see if those steps help.
  11. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. Get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. (I see you've done that edit thing) It would be good to know if the things you are trying to rez are linksets or coalesced objects. You should always look at Second Life Grid Status Reports to see if a grid wide problem has come up. It can take a couple of hours for a problem to appear there. So, keep checking while you try to resolve the problem. Also, there is a problem for those using MS Skydrive. If you are search on that, for a solution. I'll skip it cause I doubt you have that problem. Next look to see if you are in a Pathfinding (IF) Beta region or one of the Release Channels (RC). Look in Help->About... If you are in an RC look at Deploys for the Week of... (Tech->Servers in forum) to see if others are having a problem. If your in a IF Beta region, visit and RC sandbox and try rezing your stuff. If you are in a LL viewer and it fails in an RC sandbox, file a JIRA. And... surely you have checked your video card's driver? Yes? There is a problem on the ADITI grid with things failing to rez. It doesn't fit in with your description, but if you were thinking of testing there, that might not be such a good idea.
  12. Several peple have asked similar but different questions. I'll try to responde to all of them. I can do custom shapes. But, it really depends on what you want. Whether I'll do it or not depends on whether you know what you want. In commercial art and other fields proofs are used to determine if one is on the right track. Making numerious proofs when a client has not made up their mind or is not sure what they want becomes tedious for all involved. I don't want to go there. There are numerious shape makers in SL. Shape and skin is usually made to go together. I play with skin, but I think my skill with skin is weak. A number of designers have published their measurements. One can use those to make a similar shape. But, if you have a profile and portrait of the shape you want, I and others can crate a shape for you. But so can you. Then comes the cost. Most marketed shapes are way less expensive than custom made shapes. I see shapes for sale from free limited permissions shapes to several thousand L$ for full permissions shapes. For a no transfer custom shape made from your images I start at L$2,500. I sell a tool for helping people make shapes and get their proportions right. See: Model Shape Tool L$50 If you are looking for a Custom Avatar, in the sense of Fluffy, then you are moving into a whole new realm. The new mesh replacement avatars are just getting started. To give you an idea of the complexity, I have an eight page tutorial on just getting setup to make mesh clothes. See: Second Life Mesh Clothes Blender 2.6 Setup 2012 Tutorial. Expect such a custom avatar to cost tens of thousands of L$. If you are looking for a custom avatar in the nature of the avatars in the Libary section of your Inventory, try Grendel's Children. Those commercial avatars go for amazingly low cost, L$200 to 600. If you are looking for a Custom LOOK, like a fashion model might, that is the major pass-time for many of us in SL. Just start shopping. Specifically for the Sorcerer avatar: The image shows a cell shaded avatar. We can do those in SL. They are generally made from mesh now. See: Cell Shaded Blue Horse. (Sorry I have a better image I just can't find.). To find someone that can make one of those look through the Mesh Section of the forum to find someone making those.
  13. There is a JIRA item I re-opened with new information. See: JIRA VWR-23983. Please click WATCH not VOTE. Vote is ok but only WATCH counts.
  14. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. Get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. Several Third Party Viewers (TPV) have beacons for things that generate chat. In LL Viewers you find Beacons in World->Show->Beacons. Try Scripted with Touch Only unchecked.
  15. I use Chrome as my primary browser. It has an autoupdate feature. So, from time to time it seems to go nuts. If you closely follow the version numbers shown in About... you'll see changes are usually right after an update. A fix will be a long shortly. In Tools )wrench icon) there is a subitem Tools which has Report an issue... Any time you find a page that does not render, use that to report the page. Make sure your video driver is up to date. The HTML5 stuff tends to use more graphics card features via OpenGL. Browsers were the ultimate app for compatibility. It seems they are moving forward and performance is becoming important too. Google, the company, seems to be heading toward more 3D support, which is still cutting edge tech. So, expect to see occassional problems with Chrome. A nice fall back is Chromium. It is more of an experimental version of Chrome. It has no automatic update. Updates are a manual download.
  16. Marogold's solution works. We have more information now and a JIRA tracking the problem. This problem is a true gotcha. For more information on the problem, how to fix it, and how to avoid it see: Second Life Wearing All Inventory.
  17. There is more information on this problem as of May 2012. We know the cause and the fix. The cause is a true gotcha. The problem is triggered when one wears an Outfit or folder, using replace, add, or wear. Between the time the folder or outfit folder is selected and the time we click Replace, Add, or whatever the viewer changes our selection. This change is apparently caused by a Calling Card update. Those happen when friends log on and off. When we click 'Wear', or whatever, we re telling the viewer to wear the whole freaking inventory. Then, while we can remove things, each time we login new stuff is attached. Removing things is point less they keep getting added back. The fix is to clean up the Current Outfit and whatever Outfit may have been corrupted by the Wear All Inventory move. The fix is to visit an empty and deserted region, may a new outfit without any attachments and only the very basic nude avatar. Replace the Current Outfit with the newly made next to nothing outfit. There are complications and other factors. You can read about those in: Second Life Wearing All Inventory
  18. Nyll is right. When you ask for technical help include information about your system and viewer. All we can give you is generic answers. Most connection problems are because of poor internet connections. Read through Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection. Just getting good results on SpeedTest.net is not enough. You need to examine parts of your connection and viewer performance to see where the problem is. The basic quickfixes are to restart the computer and your router and/or modem. When it is not your connection there are some other things that can keep you from logging in. When servers crash or viewers fail you can leave a ghost copy of yourself in-world. That creates login problems. While once a frequent problem it has mostly been eliminated. But, in rare cases it still happens. For the fixes see: I Can’t Login. Notice that links to an earlier article with more information. Good luck.
  19. It may be a matter of the time of day. For the last 2 days and this evening they have been upgrading server operating systems from 6PM to 2AM PDT. As load shifts between hardware there will likely be some bzzare beahvior.
  20. The current update to the main channel does not have the new region crossing code. Only the release channels have the new region crossing code. Even there we should see little if any change in crossings. The update is what they have called Phase I of an infrastructure change. They asked us to watch for region crossing changes. I suspect this is because these changes should not affect present code if things are working correctly, but I don't know that. As to what the nightly maintenance work is to be changing, that is simple. They are once again upgrading the Debian operating systems. Since these upgrades are reimaging asset, billing, web, display name, world map, concierge, and other backend servers we have the possibility of down times and interruptions as load is shifted between hardware. Since the changes are in the backend systems we are not likely to see much change. Since it is also in the underlying operating system, we are not likely to much if any perceivable change in SL. We have been told... a couple of months ago I think... that we won't see significant improvement in crossings until Phase II of the region crossing refactor arrives. I expect lots of bumps in that process. You can follow these changes on my blog and a few others. EDIT---------------- Correction: The region crossing code was starting to crash regions in Magnum. The roll was stopped and all regions are running the same code. No region crossing Phase I code is running.
  21. In 2007 and 2008 it was common for businesses to promote their products in Second Life. Not so much any more. I do think fashion based businesses could profit from advertising in SL. But, I'm not sure it is a clear cut economic win in this economy. So, don't expect to find too many.
  22. I agree with Innula. The error message is not indicative what the main problem likely is. When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. If the viewer will at least show the login screen, get the info from the viewer's Help-About before logging in... and paste that into your post with your question. To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post. I take it that you are using multiple viewers. If you are not using separate viewer caches, that could be a significant part of the problem. Create separate caches for each viewer. Let the Linden SL Viewer use the default cache. Change viewers like Imprudence and Firestorm to use their own cache. I'm assuming since you use multiple viewers you know how to setup caches. If not, read: Lost Inventory and Missing Inventory Fix – Help Once you have those setup, clear the Linden viewer's cache. This may solve your problem. BUT... as suggested, the problem may just be from the maintenance work. They are updating the operating system in the backend servers from 6PM to 2AM. Tonight is to be the last evening of updates in this round. SO... don't do anything too drastic until they are done. Regardless of the cause, having separate caches for each viewer is a good thing to do.

    Mesh Error

If you can reproduce the problem every time and can write out the steps needed to get the error, file a JIRA bug report. The Lindens will want a copy of the mesh item to test. I suggest you include the MeshMaxConcurrentRequests setting in the report. We have seen some mesh items that can cause a viewer crash and other bizzare behavior. In a recent User group meeting a mesh avatar was causing video problems for those using nVidia 296.10 but I wasn't seeing them using 301.24, but that driver causes me other problems. I recommend staying on 296.10. NVIDIA is have some problems and they go beyond SL.
  24. Like Rolig, I'm not sure what you are asking. I'll guess you are seeing the message in a language other than English. The formating may be messed up in your language and incomplete. Read through the info at Rolig's link. You can add more to your question by clicking Options in the upper right of your post.
  25. Many of us do want this feature developed. Oz is "pressuring" the issue to get examples in for testing, or at least some are speculating that was the reason for his statements. Others think he was back peddling in the follow up statements. Whichever the case, it created controversy and is getting the request in front of people. Communicating to the SL community is a difficult thing to do. The Lab's employees are generally not hired for communication skills. Nor has management been good at communication or perceived its importance. Within their knowledge they do and evaluate as best they can. But, the result is the lack of a good communication channel to the mass of SL users. So, Oz has no tool for reaching the fashion designers that could help. If you want to help get the word out and show support for the Deformer project follow the steps in: #SL Mesh Defomer at Risk. I took the public... somewhat hidden in the JIRA... statements at face value. Inara grabbed Oz and asked WTF? She has taken a different tack in her view and coverage based on later private statements. At this point we'll see how the community responds. There is no doubt the Lab wants the Deformer feature. Whether the Lab has a time issue with it is another matter. Users would prefer sooner rather than later. But, the Lab's preference is unclear. It may make no difference to the Lab's plans whether this is adopted this year or 2 or 3 years from now. But, the issue is affecting designers now. Leting them know there is a problem holding things up, which they can do something about, is the current need. People can bash the Lab for not having good communication channels with users or get busy and to something to move the project forward. Yesterday I started contacting the designers I buy from and sending them to the article I wrote to explain the need and what steps can be taken to get word out.
