  1. The Lab did. They have been talking about replacing media playing systems in the viewer for over a year. There will be a formal announcement when it releases and rolls out to the grid. They make announcements from time to time about what is coming. Recent Second Life Developments - What’s New and What’s Coming! REMINDER: Update Your Web Browser to Ensure Secure Payments! Project Bento Testing Is Now Live on the Main Grid! Why are all these people made of colored jelly? Lab Chat Returns Friday with Ebbe, Oz and Troy Linden! Exclusive Message for Second Life Residents Available Inworld Today! and it goes on and on... Designers and creators in SL stay up on events by following Inara Peys's and my blogs. We follow what the Lindens are doing and attend the in-world meetings. Some designers/creators do also. Tuesday Noon - Denby, Agni Thursday 1 PM - Hippotropolis, Agni Thursday 3 PM - Morris, Aditi That is about 3 hours a week the Linden engineers spend with residents. Who made your car and how often did the engineers meet with you to tell you what they were doing? Or even have a press conference? No one is so all that that the Lindens will track them down and tell them what is going on. They have made it possible for those that WANT to know to find out. You could grip to the makers of the TV's and other devices. They have known for a LONG time things were going to change. I expect they'll ignore you. But, you can grip.
  2. Rolig probably gave the answer of most use. You might also ask a third party viewer developer or one of the Bot control viewer makers if they can add a feature to catch that information and write it to disk. Or if you are good with C#, do it your self.
  3. I think you mean VAW now WAW... The VAW XTC **bleep** is a product sold by Renegade Gray. I suggest you put it on, right-click it, and select EDIT. Look for the creator. I think it should be Renegade Gray. But, marketplace sales and in-world sales may be different. They do use affiliates sales people. Most of the vending machins in store have Renegade's name. The product has 129 reviews as of today. The first few I have looked at are positive. So, the product does work. Since the store is in a region owned by Renegade, I suspect there are many satisfied customers. It takes some sales to support a region. Make sure you understand the directions. There should be a note card in the package that tells how to use, edit, and get help. If you have edited it, you may have broken it... (Oh... that sounds so bad.) There is a Redelivery Terminal in the store. There is a support address given: http://www.virtualartworks.biz/support.html.
  4. The only VR I've heard of that works with SL is Trinus VR. It is for Android devices and mostly focused on Google Cardboard. But, you might talk it into working. I suggest you search this forum for HTC Vive aand look for the names of people that have a Vive. Send them an PM and see if they have found a solution and gotten theirs to work. A video: In the video he selects the VR Device. Vivve is not in what is shown... but, may be something is close enough. Whatever you find it would be nice if you came back and updated this thread.
  5. The Lindens are not good at keeping things up to date. If you look at the history of the first page you link to, you'll find the last Linden up ate was in 2012. A resident updated something in 2014. THe same is true with ACI. The Lindens that knew all the details have moved on to other projects. Costs have been modified. So, the page is out of date. No one really cares because most of us use the Preview Grid when uploading mesh and we can just click and see the LI cost or ACI. ACI is changing... or is likely to change. The Lindens are still accpeting feedback on what would make for a better and more realistic calculation. So, there isn't much point in updating the ACI page. We don't know what the final calc will be. All that matters to most of us is what things are considered in the calculation. There are lots of discussons about what the actual formula and values are. For the best discussions search through Drongle McMahon's posts. You may have to go back into history. But, Drongle has probably done the most testing and experiementing to find how to reduce Land Impact Cost. I know it is tough on new people. But, it is mostly up to the community to update the wiki.It is also a matter of whether we want them writing in the Wiki or writting code. I prefer code.
  6. Everyone has there own ideas as to what is good machine for running Second Life. Some of those people will have perfernces like yours. But, without knowing what you prefer we have no idea what is a good laptop for you. There are decent laptops that run SL for US$400-$600 but.... If you don't mind running SL at minimum settings and 20 Frames per Second, cheap latops will do fine. Desktops will perform better for usually less money. But, Dell and others are selling new but old tech Core2 machines. You have to pay attention to what they are advertising. Intel builds graphics processing into its CPU's. If you are into simple gaming, meaning you aren't overclocking, needing 100 FPS, VR, plugging into a 144hz monitor... then the Intel CPU will get you by quit nicely. Expect to run on medium to low graphics. Intel CPU's come in i3, i5, and i7 models. There are 6 generations of each model. The 6th is the most recent and the most costly. Be sure you know what you are buying as some merchants will try to sell 4th gen CPU's at 6th gen prices. The graphics the CPU has built in is also related to the generation. You want HD graphics: Iris. The HD numbering is confusing. The SL Sys Requirements say chip set 945... If you want to try and decode all that look here for help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units Anything that came out after the 945 set is usuable. The newer the better. I suggest you focus on getting a 6th gen CPU and it will have the best graphics available via CPU. A 5th gen will be cheaper and probably good enough graphics-wise. The i3 CPU will work OK. It is on the light side. The i5 is usually the best for the money and works well with SL. The i7 has the most horse power and costs the most. 5th gen chips are also better priced. You'll find laptops have CPU's named i5-####M (#=number). The M just says it it is designed to save power, which generally means it runs slower than its brothers with no letter or other letters. There are other letters for suffixes. K is about overclocking and tends to be a more expensive chip. You can use the i5-#### ID to Google for the genration the CPU belongs to. When you use HD Graphics the system uses computer RAM for Video RAM. This means you need more RAM. I would consider 8GB a minimum for HD Graphics machines. But, I have a laptop that does OK on medium graphics with HD and 4GB. Memory comes in DDR2, 3, and 4 for use with 5th and 6th gen CPU's. DDR4 is generally expensive but, slow DDR4 isn't badly priced. But, 3 and especially 2 is getting very cheap. If you can, get a laptop with a dedicated graphics processor. In Laptops these are usually a chip welded to the motherboard. There is a change going on in the graphics world in regard to Vulkan and OpenGL, the graphics engines that draw the game on screen. OpenGL is what SL uses. AMD is focused on next gen Vulkan and not fixing problems in their current OpenGL drivers. They are unlikely to ever fix those problems. This pushes most SL users toward using NVIDIA. NVIDIA has just released (August 2016) their GTX 1060, 1070, 1080, and Titan-X. So, prices on the 900 series cards/chips are dropping but, slowly. If you want to do VR the 10 series is what you want. All of these choices get complex and changes whether you run on LOW graphics at 30fps or HIGH at 30fps... Without knowing how you like to see SL, we are clueless as to what you should get. Spend $400 or $3,000? The decision is budget and personal preference.
  7. Were you clear with support that you were have a password problem on the Preview Grid? Others have run into this problem. For a time I had to use my old password until I got Support to fix it. Inventory sync's at the first 6AM, or there abouts, after your last login. I doubt that is related to your login as inventory and login are different servers. If after 48 hors your password is still not working, file another support ticket.
  8. Alwin is right. The Preview Grid is where Lindens and residens test things. Money is free in ADITI. You still pay L$10 per image upload and whatever the fee is for a mesh. BUT, you get free L$ loaded into your ADITI account when it runs low. So, there is never a cost to you.
  9. Current export from the SL Linden viewer is by shape paramter in an XML file. These parameters are specific to Second Life. So, there is no native feature in Blender that handles them. There are 3 or so third party addon's to Blender that can translate the XML into something useful; AvaStar, MayaStar, and Wiz Daxter's Avatar to... You'll find them in the marketplace. For some more information see: http://blog.nalates.net/2013/04/23/second-life-shape-export/ (2013) There are some gotcha's problems the article explains. There are some third party viewers that allow shape export via an OBJ file. I don't remember which ones.
  10. Whether you can show as the creator depends on how the item was provided to you. If you got the mesh form within SL then you probably can't. Many selling full perm mesh provide a link to a Collada file (.dae) that you upload as mesh. This later process then labels the mesh with you as the creator.
  11. Rogue, Freya believes as many do that the Lindens play favorites. There is anecdotal evidence to support Freya’s belief. After 8+ years in SL I tend to disagree and see it another way. Your questions are valid ones. I'll try to anwer them in contextual way. Those working at the Lab are people. Some are somewhat removed from the users and some deal with us every day, week, or just often throughout the year. Some Lindens know me, many don’t. I know some Lindens, but not all. Anyone that knows members of a group knows who to contact when they have a question or want something. Lindens are used to having people try to use them. So, after a time they learn who to trust, establish friendships, and like anyone will on occasion do favors. People that have been around longer and done more tend to know how to get things done. They also tend to know more Lindens. So, I understand how it can look like the Lindens play favorites. Some people are getting things done that others seem not to be able to accomplish. It is easier to be a victum than admit ignorance. The Firestorm group has some well-known people the Lindens are working with and they all have similar goals. So, they help each other. But, the Lindens can’t spend the same amount of time with new people they don’t know and that have not established a relationship with the Lab. The Firestorm people have EARNED the help and attention they receive. This is something many in SL forget when talking about the Lindens. So, who is doing MoTD? I don’t really know. I actually had stop and think about where it was. It looks like it comes mostly from Events and the Destination Guide. AFAIK, you can’t buy listings in either of those lists. You get your stuff in the lists and hope a Linden picks it. Whoever is picking it is hidding to avoid spam. So, you'll likely see some generic Linden name if you can find one. There probably isn’t a single person that handles the splash page, Editor’s Picks, Picture of the day, MoTD, and whatever featured this or that… The name that appears most often in connection with these features is Xiola Linden, Community Manager. I suspect she oversees all of these but, Peter Gray (Pete Linden), marketing, may oversee some or all of them. I suggest you email Xiola directly with the content of your post and a link to it. Add in that there is no entry for MoTD in the newer Knowledgebase. Hopefully she will update the information. The MoTD page in the Wiki is horribly out of date. They have a couple of people (Rand Linden & Jeremy Linden) that work at updating the Wiki and Knowledgebase. The Wiki I think these days is left mostly to users to update, except when new technology comes out. You could also CC Rand and/or Jeremy. The main splash page has mostly Destinations. If you go all the way to the bottom of the left hand list of destinations on the web site you’ll see a link to suggest a destination. Suggest yours. Have your friends suggest your destination. Numbers and popularity do not guarantee you’ll appear. But, they will get your destination considered. There are Events and you can add yours to the list. A good thread to read is: Event Promotion. I believe being in these will get you considered for MoTD. AFAIK, you can’t buy your way in. What criteria do they use for picking businesses or places to feature? They don't say in any place that I know. In light of what I've said above, we can surmise why the Lindens will pick one over another. The Linden goal is to present things residents will find enteresting to keep them inerested in SL. So, what is new, where a deal is, what is fun... We can't know what those making the selection think those things are. But, we can make good guesses. Those that get featured have figured out what works or... lucked out and caught the right eye, mood, or criteria. Be interesting and new is my advice. Persistance is the way getting featured. There is some balance point between persistence and nagging. Avoid crossing that line. In many ways this is smilar to getting good placement in Google search. Lots of factors.
  12. It is very rare that inventory is actually lost. But, there are somethings that cause it to NOT appear in your inventory. The leading caused is a poor connection to the SL servers. Having a good Internet connection does not mean you have a good connection to SL. Check your viewer stats (Ctrl-Shift-1). For more help see: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ Since this is your first forum post we assume you are using the Linden made SL Viewer and not using the preview grid. However, assumptions often cause problems. Use the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... to copy your computer specs and paste them in with support questions. If you are using the preview grid and third party viewer then there are other possible problems. The SL Wiki has a section on Inventory loss. It is horribly out of date and provides bad information. A more up to date help page is http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_missing_inventory. While it is for the Firestorm viewer, in this respect all viewers are pretty much the same. Additional information is here: https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Finding-lost-objects-and-attachments/ta-p/1316943
  13. There are some apps listed in http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory As to which is best... Search for the names in the SL Forum and see what people have to say about them.
  14. Rhonda is correct. Hers is a step-by-step process that will help you find the specific item that is a problem. The name for the problem you are seeing is BAKE FAIL. A lot has been written about bake fail. While in an empty region, replace your appearance with one of the default Library appearances or use a Test Avatar. Library avatars can be found in your inventory in the Library folder. The Library folder can be hidden by a setting in Preferences. Be sure you select replace current outfit when changing to a new outfit. The test avatars are in the Viewer's top menu: Develop (Ctrl-Alt-Q to reveal/hide)->Avatar->Character Tests->Test Male/Test Female. Pick one. If the COF (Current Outfit Folder) is the problem for some reason this outfit change should fix it. These are the best choices for troubleshooting Bake Fail. If they do not help, there is a good chance your connection to SL is the problem. Having a good Internet connection does not mean you have a good connection to the SL servers.
  15. For now it is a bit confusing as Project Bento is changing things and various alternate avatars are showing up for Blender, Maya, and 3D Max. The older avatar is available on the SL Wiki, but it comes in parts. Also, the new Bento avatar is available in the wiki. For now I think only the Linden viewer handles uploading using thqat model avatar. Plus it is still changing and we know the viewer has upload bugs. The Machinimatrix.org web site has a workbench version of the avatar that is made for Blender but, can imported to other programs. I haven't looked to see what MayaStar has made available. I think whatever they have would work better with 3D Max.
  16. To get an accurate answer to your question we need the information from your viewer's HELP->ABOUT... But, if it won't run long enough to let you into help, use the free program GPU-Z. THat will give us you graphics chip/card model and the driver version. Without that all we can tell you to do is look at System Requirements and see if your hardware can run SL. Or wind your way through Rolig's list of 'ifs'.
  17. No special powers here... Premium gives no advantage in this area. I think Madelaine is right, web bug. You can file a JIRA bug report and hopefully get it fixed.
  18. Seems people have problems with changing passwords on ADITI. If you can't get in, you can try your previous password. It might get you in. Otherwise, ask support to fix it. As to inventory being messed up... The Linden viewers use a seperate inventory cache for AGNI and ADITI. If you are using a third party viewer that does NOT use seperate ADITI/AGNI caches, you are likely to have problems. Check with your viewer maker. You will have to have support straighten out your updated ADITI inventory. You might get things sorted by using the Linden viewer. Login to ADITI. Allow inventory to fully load. Log out. Login again well after 6 AM SLT/PT the next day. Let invenotry load and see if it is working. If not... support ticket. You can try going to the Server Beta UG on Thrusday @ 3PM SLT @ Morris, Aditi. You might sweet talk a Linden into helping.
  19. The Lab and people and organizations like them have done all the things they can think of to reduce this problem. There are laws against theft. What we have isn't working well. So, everything most people can think of has been done. Now it is up to us to figure out what tools the Lab can provide that would help us figure out who is legitimate and who isn't. Consider something like: BUG-37644 - I'm not sure how much this would help, but it would help me in making decisions on who to by from. File your own Feature Requests. Try to make them something practical that can actually be done.
  20. A good place to get first hand help is the Server Beta User Group that meets on Thrusdays (3PM SLT) in Morris, ADITI (preview grid). A couple of people that attend are owners of a number of regions. They should be able to give you some help. Plus 1 or 3 Lindens attand the meetings. They can look at your region stats to see what is happening.
  21. If the viewer is actually stuck at Requesting... then it is a connection issue. Once you have tested all the things you have, that pretty much leaves the Lab's side of things. Did you check Grid Status? Did you try logging into a different region? Also, today is Tuesday and a new server package rolled out. If you were trying in morning California, USA time the region could be in restart or may have hung in restart. Restarting regions are known to fail to reconnect to the backend servers and need a second restart after the roll out. So, try different regions. You logged into the forum so, we know you have DNS and network operational into the Lab. Leave reinstalls until you are certain your viewer software is actually broken. That means waiting until you know it isn't the Lab. You can use this information to see if the connection problem is you, yuor ISP, DNS, or the Lab. It might have saved you some reinstalls. http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/ You can read the viewer's log file to see what it is actualy doing and where things went wrong.
  22. For the Linden made viewer this is about the only way: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/07/24/second-life-camera-position-tips/ If you would like to see camera presets entered, file a JIRA Feature Request. You are right about the Lindens not reading the forum. There are parts of it that some Lindens watch. As best I can tell ANSWERS is not one of them.
  23. How to reset the camera depends on which viewer you use. Because this is your first post, some of us assume you are using the Linden made viewer. But, it makes everyone's life easier if you tell us. I suggest you launch the viewer and before or after login click HELP->ABOUT... and copy that information and paste it in with any question you ask. You can add it to your post using OPTIONS->EDIT in the upper right corner. If none of the recommended fixes work, read: http://blog.nalates.net/2011/07/24/second-life-camera-position-tips/ There are more camera position controls in Debug Settings than the article lists. When you find the ones mentioned in the article, you will be able to see the others. You can reset those to the defaults by using the button in the Debug Settings panel.
  24. You aren't giving us much information. It is best to open the viewer and before or after login click HELP->ABOUT... and copy that information to include with your poat. You can add it to this one using OPTIONS->EDIT in the upper right of your post. You can get and run the free programs Open Hardware Monitor and/or GPU-Z to see the temperatures in your laptop. If they are getting into 80C and up range it is running too hot. Make sure your cooling air path is not obstructed. Check any vents on the bottom of the unit. Make sure nothing is obstructing them when you are using it. Some laptops can be easily opened and cleaned. Look for your model number then search YouTube using the model number and the word 'disassemble'. If it looks too complicated and you are running hot, it may be time to have a tech open the case and clean it out. If you are in the northern hemisphere, it is common to have heat problems this time of year. A friend plays WoW with a small fan blowing on his laptop. It helps to keep the unit from sucking the hot cooling exhaust into the nearby intake vents. You can Google for tips on how to cool your model of laptop.
  25. Take a look at the Nvidia setting information here: http://blog.nalates.net/2016/06/05/nvidia-settings-2016/
