  1. yeah, isn't it great? I feel like I've got a shopping list of books to read and re-read.
  2. I don't have a RL facebook account. I had one but somehow all these acquaintances from work became my "friends" and I didn't like the feeling of my privacy being invaded. So I deleted it. I've since then concluded that FB is kind of evil and I'm glad I'm gone. If they ever figure out that Kali is an avatar then I will just kiss it goodbye without regrets.
  3. Loved Canticle! One of my favorites. I didn't know or maybe forgot there was a sequel. My memory is just terrible. I could never have told you Walter Miller was the author. I didn't see Ursula LeGuin mentioned, I love her work. Also the Dune series by Frank Hebert. I cut my milk teeth on Heinlein when I was a teenager and continued to read everything he published as it came out. But I think "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" was my favorite. Followed him with Asimov, Clark, Bradbury. Roger Zelazney was one of my favorites, I wish he'd written more. I hear his son has picked up and carried on with the Amber Novels but I haven't read 'em yet Fave by him, hard to say, probably Doorways in the Sand, followed by Lord of Light. Greg Bear, another more recent fave, didn't know his work til I was already an old lady. Samuel Delaney was another one of my teen discoverys "Babel17" and Dahlgren were my faves. Neal Stephenson I didn't read til after hearing about him in SL. I'm better at remembering titles than author names, so I don't know if I've read any of the others or not, but C.J. Cheryh name looks so familiar to me although I can't remember anything about her except the cover of a book. And not too good at titles either, so not sure who wrote about the invading baby elephants (Footfall) or the three armed monkeys (The Mote in God's Eye) So I looked it up on Amazon and sure enough it was Larry Niven in partnership with Jerry Pournelle. I agree about them being better together.
  4. I think my age is showing. I've read everything Heinlein ever wrote and I remember the name Friday, but I don't remember the story at all. I looked it up on Wikipedia and it still doesn't ring a bell. I'm not going to bother to re-read this one, I do remember thinking about his later books, and this is one of his later books, that he was losing his touch. He would get started on one of his pet ideas and fiddle about, pontificating and advancing the plot with action but then he'd sort of fizzle out. Either that or he'd tie the characters to his other works serving up leftovers. Still love him dearly though and now that I'm also getting advanced in age, I'm a little more forgiving of his foibles.
  5. I know I read “The Stars My Destination” but all I remember is something about nomad and a guy with tattoos. And I remember I really liked it too. Gonna have to re-read that one.
  6. It's really hard to get over losing a beloved dog. We lost our Molly in October of 2015 and it's only been about 6 months now that we've started looking for another. So far it's been really hard to find a dog that can compete with the wonderful memories we have.
  7. awwww, I remember that night! Two of me were there. It really was magical and yeah, pretty immersive.
  8. I loved that sim! Very good vibes there. I remember the first time I went there it was for some hunt or other and so I saw the whole place in great detail. Now that was a great place to be immersed in.
  9. I look at the forums to take a break at work. Since I work at home and my personal PC is next to my work PC, it's always right there beeping at me when there's a new post
  10. I think I was the most immersed back when I first started. I felt like everything that happened to my avatar happened to me. I set out to make an avatar that looked like me and she made the same decisions the woman at the keyboard would make. I wouldn't do anything in SL that I wouldn't do in RL. I actually created my first alt to try some of the things that I(meaning my first av) wouldn't do. Now I'm that alt and the immersion is not as intense. I am still pretty much immersed most of the time. When I'm hosting. I am that person in the blues club who is in charge, who's job it is to make sure everyone there is having a great time. When I make friends with someone in SL, I consider them a real friend, not just pixels on a screen. I care as deeply for people in SL as I do in RL. When my feeling are hurt in SL, the real me suffers the pain. Knowing this, I try really hard to be kind to everyone I meet in SL, knowing that they have real feelings too.
  11. about the use of gestures.... As a host I make my own gestures. The goal for me in making gestures has always been to make them seem as much like regular conversation as possible. To me a good gesture blends in perfectly with the chat. It's just a shorthand way of saying something that I find my self saying over and over again. I don't think anyone objects to a gesture that they can't even distinguish as a gesture. In a busy club, this kind of gesture is just a way to keep up with all the comings and goings. When people complain about spamming gestures, I always feel just a little bit self conscious and defensive. I am not a spammer.
  12. I don't frequent furry only places since I'm not furry so I really can't compare my experience to the OP's. We do have a smattering of furries that come to our club and I haven't really noticed anything about them that I could generalize about other than they are furry and they like blues music. I think that they feel as welcome as anyone, I know I don't treat them any differently except for one that I flirt with who wears a werewolf av and I do get a sweet little thrill at the sight of him, he's a handsome beast. Blues folk are pretty tolerant people and we accept everyone as long as they follow our rules. Our rules are pretty relaxed as well, basically don't be an A hole. Oh and officially we don't allow child avs, just because we don't think children should be in bars. But we don't make a big deal of it. I don't even ask them to leave as long as they don't insist on RPing as a child while they are in the club. I generally assume that there is an adult behind the av so it's not really a crime. @Amina Sopwith I do agree about goths being lovely people, I got to know some because I'm a fan of the twisted hunt. I like the idea that they get their darkness out in non-destructive ways leaving nothing but the loveliness.
  13. yeah, you're right. I couldn't tell from the early posters but when the necrophiliac began defending his/her flood of posts, then it became clear
  14. Is that why all the necrophilia happening? And how could you know that it's an alt (not saying you are wrong but couldn't it be a witless newb?)?
