I realize on balance technological improvements are a Good Thiing, but damn it is a lot of work staying current. I dabble in coding, or at least read about it and fantasize about making programmes now and then (well, I make half programs with empty non working buttons and dream a bit lol...Java was good for this, Unity 3d was fun to use for game making dreaming as well and blender even has a game engine...I stay away from it because it might eat my time like thewater and cloth sims did) and Iterations is a key word when I read about the new programming fads, ideas and so on. Early and often, release release release and make the users test it! No worry about paying people, they will tell you! funny stuff huh...actuallly it sort of isn't. There are different styles ofmaking and completng programmes, the ancient books even teach me the product lifecycle...support is much more of a time than making the programm. Bugs are almost innevitable and the competition will always out do you. But, stability is important to some users so an antivirus software company or IBM huge supercomputer will have Mission Critical (IBM might be connected to it, fix it and all that stuff...nice huh?) stuff that they can get sued big money...guess what the EULA's for our at home boxes say? No suing, no claims of damaages. So, the software is made rapidly, fast roll out of features and often as possible. The users that get sick will simply do without until they realise they need a new version....OR, the latest addition to the fad....you have no choice because it is online or in your webbrowser! THEY decide monthly or quarterly to change what they wany, break what they want and so on and use a math equation to decie who is worthless or not. Sadly, SL would not run on some of the better computers of ht world. We are consumers, we just eat stuff....and poop and burn stuff that destroys the world...they poisen it and create disasters and governments create wars and religions seem to be both helping people to live through it all but also maybe not helping stop it all...sadly, even the lower cost hardware I saw that had relaible and really quick (per $1 of price) CPU and motherboards where for business stuff....they where servers and didn't do graphics cards well at all. Now, some do...but still, the software is the same...sad stuff. There is no hope for stability, longevity and all that stuff. Aside from keyboards, they lastme forever...I wear them down and the keys get funny shaped and all that...I have one from the 90's that takes and adapter, no USB available so one day I will not be able to use it....but I don't use it now anyway...I should wear it out before it dies! Which is what I am doing with another old one now...not that i NEED to wear it out....it just happens....sort of a mental thing. Agile, Scruum's, Extreme programming, and all the other stuffI read about as I dream of programming.I hunt down what is in the braces {} an what is out, what went wrong....ah, the spelling mistakes...oh, the spelling mistakes....fun stuff, sor tof. Aas I work alone this Scrumm stuff is barely any use to me, other than to make jokes up....sadly, I am not productive enough and funny enough to make a famous comic strip out of it all. Oh well. Back to the kitchen and cooking with no measurement to get something random, so I am not bored with the same ingredients.
  2. Warning: I don't know exactly what you mean because there are two distinct styles. One is hand painted, even if realism is there. The other is photo sourced, even if painting is done to make it work because SL doesn't have real types of shaders and the images distort when you paint the photo on (in 3d software..hey, maeb that is a quick answer) with the best posible nondistortion(3d software OR ps stuff with 3D ability to paint on a 3d model) so...uh...I will post some stuff I learned while searching fo ra similar set of things. Trial and error is needed to be done before I would know, something I didn't wish to invest my time in. Sorry for no URLs...this is all from memory and I don't have my HDD available and a slew of other issues...to much time wasted here for me lol. First thought...my guess: PS with 3d model support (post CS4? maybe it was CS4 that had this though...not sure) because I think it can handle faking light and shade (ambient occlusion, shade from lights is done in SL viewer automaticall, but ambeint occlusion mabe not so much for so many) but you can use blender, 3Dcoat or any baking software to and I bet some use Maya ro 3ds....just a guess. Not saying they don't hand paint a lot either...some do look entirely just hand painted to me. I have seen tutorials that use photo skin (3d.sk was the source, I think) and they use a veriety of stuff and it must be on youtube. The link to the youtube vid was from nwn.blogs.com new story about a skin maker who shows you how she made it because a theif was claiming it was only a set of photo's of one women blah blah, so she showed how it was made and that she used multiple people to make the skin. So, some may be photosource. But, some might paint them. I remember seeing a great one, it was made by some guy for the new Philip Linden (or is it Mayer or president linden lol, I can't remember) avatar. It reminded me of people who paint up stuff on devient art. It looked great, totally didn't remember me of any 3D rendering I had seen....looked all hand painted! Not saying it IS or was, I don't know. Mabe ask him! Wish I knew the name, looking up the old blog or article vai google might help. So, the hints I get are this: 3D software may be used, either/and/or to paint and maybe even create the skin from photo's (clone paint) and combos of these. Some 3D software wil connet to a 2D softare. So, looking up how the 3D game guys do it might help. The poser community, Daz studio community do use photo source sometimes (SL avatar IS an old Poser model! You can get the 3D .obj model form LL somewhere, pus a presmoothed one from a resident...wish I could remember who or where) BUT they use way way more advanced materials even when they use photo source. Having said that, 3d creation software with baking (blender, maya, 3ds, 3Dcoat, ZBrush might...yeah, I think it does....wow, I can't remember them all) may allow you to use the built materials system to bake out a full render to the SL avatar model. Maybe Avastar run, in part, by Giaa Clary might be a interesting source for you, mechinimatrix.com is the site..I think. Look into Projection painting tutorials are on Blendeercookie and Youtube for blender. This shows you how to clone brush from photos right onto the skin. You would most likely to to gimp, PS or PSP (heck, there is also a few more out there) toedit the baked 2d UV maps to get things just right. So much searching to find all these, maybe another time I wll try this all out. I did a real quick test and you need to use the tutorials and watch out for blemishes...they stretch and make lines and stuff...looks weird. Plus, lighting and all the other stuff (Ambient occlusion for some shading) and stuff....wow, you may need to get the smoothed avatar as well..some guy made it. I have a link somewhere, but I got the link from this forum or the wiki.seocndlife.com. I needed all this to make and bake a one layer racing suite and skin (which I never did do) for a super low lag avatar (helmet of low impact mesh with 10 prim hair and all that good stuff...gloves painted onthe same skin and everything) so...yeah, this as a while back and I have so may things to do with all the troubles I have had, stacked up issues. BUt, yeah, ome of the never skins seem painted. Odd source that might somehow help is devient art or other art totorials on realistic skin painting! I rnotice some like the painted to almost realism look. They don't remind me of photo sourced becuase something about photo stuff you can tell, they use some technique to make it work for the avatar and I imagine it is trial and error...non of what was learned is shared much is what you found out huh? Not surprised, with the prices in the thousands of lindens. But, even photo stuf can be painted on and heavily manipulated....so who knows how they do it!
  3. Thanks to all. Interesting stuff. It was particularly interesting to see Mesh Studio (learning curve 2 is believable, it is mostly based on SL prims and converting them to mesh) and I keep forgetting to try this one, I just don't have a project for it at the moment and am getting back into logging in and getting some things done and don't play with prims much, you can get a certain design going with cut objects and all that and it is very quick compared to making those shapes the slow way in poly building.
  4. Thank you for the pic and info, as well as the test of a more complex 'glass' peice! I bet jewelry will be the easiest, it is so much smaller. The larger items get more unbelievable. But, maybe the real strength is in what can be done that can't be done in real life anyway.
  5. Porky Gorky wrote: I purchased 3DS max in 2010. Cost me £2300. Not sure what that is in Mickey Mouse money. It has already paid for itself through SL sales, but more importantly it has given me the opportunity to learn industry standard 3D modeling software which in turn has allowed me to facilitate a permanent career change in real life from a pen pushing desk monkey to a full time designer. So although I initially purchased Max to create content in SL, I also saw it as a long term investment in my future and my ongoing quest to become a better and more relevant designer in RL. Yes, I see that angle of it. The whole "use the skills elsewhere as well" thing is something I mentioned myself. I personally have other issues, so for me the 3D knowledge and small skills and abilities might be used for other areas, and really that is important angle. I remember seeing your early homes, they looked like a designer made them and if this is a new thing (they where pre2010 I believe) then you might have chose a good path, but I have no eye for these things so I can't say for sure...I am nothing in RL, as far as knowledgewise...I play with electronics and code and even pick up a paintbrush...but put it down after remember much failure and fuel and paint costs. AH, usually the Sterling pound is worth about 1.5-1.7 dollars! So, yeah...."a lot" is the quickest math answer lol. You can buy a car for that much, albeit a suspect for failure in a year or two...but, non the less some earn that much in two months or so, some maybe in a day....but the average person it would take a few months or many more paying the credit card off for it! Glad to hear it worked out for you!
  6. First, you ask here because I assume you make clothing? Clothing has fierce competition, but some must make something at it. BTW, the linden dollar is very low in it's worth and 250-280 is what it takes to buy 1USD$ of real money. BUt, items sell for a few hundred IF they are good, but there is a lot of competition for clothes and quickly made or imprescise ones sell low. Mesh objects seem to sell more, but you may buy premade....below will explain some of this...but first, an easy business option.... Maybe seek out a company in world called Tru textures and see if they are accepting artists. She will know more about what her artists may earn and if you can be one. BUT, look at what they make first to see if you can makeit. If not, then maybe seek a partner and ask what they will pay you and maybe even make textures for more than one company and do it for contract, not so much as a partner...but, this work seems few and far between to me. There are three resources I will tell you about. The Forums here have a "Employment" or wanted section. These are the place to go IF you decide to partner or look for work AND there are in world employment agencies that might help, but I warn you ahead that there are not a lot of "jobs" and and most people are independent especially when it comes to creation. SO, that is one resource...the forums for merchants, wanted and employment. Looking for a partner might work, and that partner will tell you how much they make and what they need you to do IF you can find one. If not, read below about how to find out how textures work, you can actually sell textures all by themselves in seamless, alpha out, particle usage (smoke or magic, or maybe even leaves from a tree) etc. This will help you evaluate time, if there are opportunities enough to partner and so on....onto the second one... wiki.secondlife.com is the official place for all kinds of information. It will help you learn things from business to texturing rules and abilities of prims, sculpted prims (speical to SL...they use UV mappign trick to create a shape and have specific texturing limits) and how SL uses mesh and UV mapping for that mesh (oh, as well as mateirals...did anyone mention there isn't full controllable bump mappign or nomral mappign yet? It is arriving though! Specular mapping to, but maybe months away from completion BUT you may test it....the wiki will also tell you about beta veiwers and testing, as well as these forums and the Blog posts made by Linden Lab) and basically you will want to read about permissions and business to make sure you are not getting into trouble. Also, a third resource is marketplace.secondlife.com and this is the marketplace that is official, of course selling from stores in world is also an option and for some things it is prefferable BUT if you sell stand alone textures then this is maybe the best place because people are buying flat textures and they display very well and the keywords allow them to find just the right item form you! It is cheap as it can get as well, only 10L per upload of a texture and they sell for either than much each sale or maybe more like 50L or so, hundreds for good packs that go together. This site will let you see the catagories (notice there is one that says 'Textures' ! Yes, many build on thier own and buy things like that) and there are aslo full permission items that are mesh WITH downloadbale items IF that person allows it, and it will be at thier own website or download site and they might have a license you agree to. Usually it is common sense, so the license is not bad. But, you basically get that mesh and then paint on it. Then, you sell it by uploading it and taking pictures. The Wiki.seocndlife.com site has information about all of this. Once again, you may want to check out Tru, as well as any other texture companies that sell for others (I can't remember thier names, sorry) . They sell mostly just textures, seamless or alpha/clear cutout, photo manipulated, painted, rendered or whatever you have made....like, a control panel or a display meant to be glowing and transparent....the user sets the glow in the shaders settings on thier object and also can set transparency there to....this is a small example of how you are providing for a user while not having to hang out with them, talking to them. If you can make frames of animation, I have seen animated sets of a few textures sell for a few hundred or so. Tru has a huge amount of textures and I am not sure if tey still accept work but they will evaluate if they want you....gosh , I can't remember the other company. Oh well. You can sell independently, although support is low for my items (considering they are programmed and move and such, my earnings are a few dollars a month...if even that, USD$ that is....a few hundred L$) and I can't imagine textures needed much tech support, unless animated frames are being sold...they take a scipt and you would need to sell one with them. I do know if you want to make more money you need many many items and also work at promoting and running events, sales announcements and fun stuff through groups that they run or subsciption services in which people get news and compeitions are announced and run....or any number of things to promote and keep people wanting to come back. As far as partners go, I would be careful to understand and seek a out of world contract of some kind...depending on how things work out. Also, the marketplace.secondlife.com has provisions, settings and so on for partners to split income so I know this happens and this is another reason why people point to marketplace.secondlife.com for selling. There are also vendor systems that are made by programmers/scripters that splilt money between people and thier programming is hidden from the person who technically owns the vending system that is displayed to sell things in. Maybe those help with partnerships as well. But, do read about permissions and maybe remember you can always work for contract and get paid up front IF you can find anyone wanting this. Good luck and maybe find something you like in SL, that way you may at least have fun while you are here and have no loss. Average earnings are not high, mostly land owners where earning money renting and the more prolific and larger companies made money. But, I don't do all of the things they do so I can't say it WILL work...but average earnings are low here, they don't post the figures anymore but some do work here for money but it is not much and others are granfathered in with low land fees and own large amounts and rent them.....this is hard to do and simulators cost hundreds to buy at first! texures...not sure anyone will say much, they might not want competition as well so maybe that is why I hear little of earnings lol.
  7. Vegro Solari wrote: Poenald, I want to suggest to you two names: ZBrush, which is a powerhouse and if you adapt to its workflow, mindblowingly efficient at fast modelling of all kinds, from lowpoly to ultra high detail sculpting. The main thing is that you'd be investing in a whole new skillset with it, quite applicable in real life gfx jobs down the road, if you feel like it at any time, too. SL-wise, with ZBrush you can do a lot more than you'd assume from it's "sculpture" poise; you can do super detailed textures based on light flow, you can do lowpoly models, you can bake normal maps, ambient occlusion, advanced direct painting to models, and all kinds of wicked stuff. There are no "nurbs", or like mathgeek buzzwords, but once you see what you can do, you realize you won't ever miss the buzz the math modelling buzzwords used to give. I know what you're thinking, and I'm not talking about voxel-painting everything by hand, believe me! It's got its own workflow that is refreshing and liberating, and just keeps getting better as time goes on. The learning curve is steep, it's very idiosyncratic, but this is the frequent choice app of the best mesh-masters. Silo 2, this is a very fast, intuitive, low-poly modeller app. You can pick it up in a week or two and amaze yourself how much faster you're turning out efficient and cool meshes. Only does that, but does it very well. If you were stuck on an island with Blender and Zbrush, I can't think of anything you couldn't do with just those two tools (ok, allow yourself gimp or photoshop too) that you see people do with vastly more expensive suites. Blender is so interesting these days, I hear of more paint tool work for blenders latest releases and considering it has procedural stuff that is pretty powerful, it almost does what is needed for 3D all in one. Sculpting is sort of odd, not bad and getting better but ZBrush is dedicated to this and I havn't used it beofre (not even a demo) but seen it and the price is not really bad, considering. Silo isn't bad priced at all, I remember that one and there isn't a lot of buzz about it but it has been around for years. Some like Milkshape as well, another that is low cost and not heard of much. Desert island though....ah, if Ihad enough power to power that stuff I would be tempted to try and use the PC guts and power supply to make a higher voltage thingy that makes static on radio channels and get to morse coding because there might not be enough parts or power for longer more recognizable communications.....although, the soundcard does have some basic pre amp stuff in it I bet. But, yeah...the power supply and some kind of antenna to transmit is all I would worry about and that would take up all the copper and metal.....sad thing is, if I had the tools wouldn't I be able to make a raft? Then how would I get the PC back safely? Heck, if there is no power and I am using solar or wind....I can use it on the raft.....hhhm, maybe it would work after all.

Not sure if this si happening, but it answered why some cronic offenders offend cronically....maybe for cronic? Yeah, maybe...then again they could be troll lawyers or competition a) copying the items and getting you to file take downs and then b) reporting you to the IRS for earnings issues after infiltrating your life OR maybe they find out you don't earn hardly anything and then continue on hurting you because they are evil people...or because they need money laundering channels.....I mean, the stuff isn't worth so much anyway, especially at a deep discount.....right? So, we end up with worry and payment info on file and all that stuff arguments. Wtheck did this have to do with anything that was asked, or posted, in this thread? ... Merchants sees copy, trans? and they think "Uhm, no. I can't give you copy AND trans because you will copy and then transfer it and I recieve less sales! Heck, you might even sell it and fake it was yours and those are paying customers and not just friends that like to share an gift and never buy stuff hardly!!! Just...NO...sorry.....no. THEN, the person mentions vendors. COPYBOT TROLLING, trolling for a argument about copybots and perms or DRM...oh, this might be fun to see lol. No, merchants do NOT take the bate! They are polite....alas, I can't resist pointing this all out as a troll and since the thread is so huge, no on reads my huge posts and trolling can be funny at times....sure, I will kick the bate a bit and chuckle....OK, I had to explain this.....but below is my slightly pretending to be sucked into flame war by a troll and then using the stealth of tl;dr to hide that I spotted a troll (maybe a false positive) and then try to apalogize for sounding like a jerk or at least angry...surely I was confusing, just a little bit...buy, yeah...for the fun of it I will leave the below post: I addressed the question of why merchants might use vendors that are scripted. They are at risk, of they feel they are. So, they wish to slow down copybotters (why do they bother anyway, at least the ones who sell the stuff and hurt and scare away the very creators they ripped...maybe that is thier point though?) anway, yeah....they wonder why scripted vendors and then warn they will lose business...I was simply saying, yeah it seems silly to you and you are right they should remember to put on perms but so many do it that I can't say it is thier fault when it is common practice for so many to not bother looking and not worry due to SL's low cost for items. Also, I add to the posters who speak of always displaying perms in the image when I say this: why hasn't anyone made a vendor that can overcome this common flaw and time consuming task by making a system that changes a set of prims' X boxes, or check marks...surely this is easy enough to understand and adresses the issue of n00b merchants or those who just figure no one cares and it isn't worth the time editing an image for. Totally related to the posts about vendors. IN FACT, to related...I was not on good form...or is that IN good form? I was to square when I should have been a sphere that was melted and put through a dranegrate and then frozen in time and send into space to join a concert that sends sand based noise toward a nebula so it can cry and weap for all of us to listen to....but, here I am.... a square. 2 demensional and going no where special repeating myself, more or less on a boring topic that is most likely for some alterior motive of soem sort and meant to make merchants fear using vendors? I am not sure, but if I read to much into it all...if I am to assume neferiousness (the do not want those vendors, they are bad....so is the poster! In fact, he is most likely a copybotter? Maybe he IS!!!!!!! AH HA!!! So...they have came here to destroy each other. one versus the other....a battle to the death, with no glory days ahead and only the hell of licking ones wounds as even the survivor of the fight may wish he is dead out of the madness induced by the pain inflicted.....THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF HERE......very....very seriuos. I should have been harsher, I should have fueled the fire more....surely a showdown would have occured. Bah, I walk away undrenched by the blood and the smell of burned flesh from the flame war that I could have created with my uselessness...I am ashamed. Ok, now I am just joking. Seriously....I am not sure anyone has read this far and I really don't mean to upset people or anything, text has things come accross all funny and confusing and sometimes I forget people don't wish to laugh sometimes they wish to seriousness and I basically also am not very funny many times, at least not on the surface and obviousness is more important, obviously. I should maybe edit what I wrote above more, but seriuosly....does anyone read this much or not understand I am jokign around BUT still had something interesting enough to say that I think the question of "Why" do they do this is important to address, so I did....but yeah, to much worry from merchants I think. Then, ironically, the ones that worry simply make mistakes as well and are not worrying about those while they worry about other things lol.
  9. Money is the focus, but this I can't strike your posts down with lightening if you mention you enjoy one software or enjoy the end product of it. There is a time investment, and I know some hate one or another. This is not a hate thread to argue about how one hates one or another, but surely if you invested and then found out you didn't like it or whatever then by all means....but, please remember the legal insanity we live with and beware not to libel or slander. Also, what have you see others work with that you feel is a good investment? So, yeah....what about those softwares making ya money....huh!? What's up with that. I find open source works becuse the donation of time or money is flexible. If you don't get anything, you don't give. BUT, I find myself looking at what people can do and barely can do some of it with blender and don't know if I am doing it wrong and realy don't wish to spend the time. Cloth simulator and sculpting are something I know I really don't wish to spend much time on, but they do work and I have seen OK results. Same for Nurbs, blender is not really strong in the Nurbs feature set. It has some, as well as curves that act similar...heck, it has metaballs and even does fluid simulation. But, Moment of Inspiration is designer for nurbs and concept design, and looks so much easier to use for that. Nurbs in blender is OK, but just not as good as what I saw with TSplines in 3DS. I know there are things out there, but are they even worth the money for SL? While many are out of my price range, MOI might not be, neither is Crazybump or Genetica. Not that I really can invest right now, but yeah....if I get some more cash or wish to save up....what is the thing to save up for and that you reccomend to others please?
  10. 11. Free stuff: Blender is getting paint tool upgrades, can handle procudural creation already and baking to a 3d model to. You can import models and some people use blender specifically for that. Projection painting from renders, photo's or procedural and hand painted stuff can also get what you need onto a 3D model. It also bakes AO maps for some more realistic shading that is on some SL objects. Gimp does levels, curves and many other filter functions to help make spec maps (coming soon to and SL viewer neer you!) and has paint brushes and can even handle wacom tablets on Linux! So, if you lose windows you can still paint on, model a bit (blender works well on linux) and do a some vectors with Inkscape. Even a bit of RAW photo stuff with UFOraw or a few others, I think you can even make HDRI probes and images for either using for 3d stuff (reflections and light baking and scenery for skyboxes etc. for those who don't use SL's lights and turn off the sky and water and sit in a skybox to reduce lag for smooth animated avatar action) Scultpris does some model texture stuff. I do not remember what it did, I just remember a very basic paint brush and didn't try anything else. I really should dig into this one more. costs a little: 3DCoat coats 3d objects with paint work and shaders, I think it is under 300 dollars and has retopo tools recently added. Blacksmith3d has a 3d model painting software. Realitypaint seems to be from the same guys and... Realitypaint paints on 3d models and has a offer for blacksmith 3d 4 free with purchase. Costs over $100, I think 199. Genetica, for those who like to use filters to create textures. I think this is like 100 dollars or so. This thing creates the normal maps and all that jazz as you create, it is more or less procedural and has some masking and other features that make it very much more powerful than some turkey working on some noise with a fancy brush in photoshop....but, then again the right dude with the right brushe can hand paint what he needs...or she could. Genitalia do not dictate ability to paint....I don't think....if they do I would maybe not want to touch thier paintings! Crazybump is about $100 or so and add a 200-500 camera to make normal maps and stuff. Why paint it when you can normal map it from overcast day (even lighting, just warm it up in gimp or the camera makers free software!) photo will make many things that some procedure and paint up. Learning to use a polrizer to tke out reflection, soften a flash or shoot on overcast days may help a bit here. Not to mention studio lighting options using new LED and flourescent "cool" lights instead of expensive studio flash monolight. Mari, from the foundry may be a replacement for some creators (http://www.3dworldmag.com/2012/02/07/do-you-really-need-photoshop/) but the cost is not small. Over 1000 euros or pounds...uh, lots of money! But hey, If you want to paint with the big hollywood movie dudes toys then this might work. I notice on the website they say you can import adobe psd files but at the same time it is a paint program with advanced layers, ptex support and can import PS paint brushes and has procedural creation (uh, like noise made from a filter...filters is the PS word I think. Math makes visual stuff) so it is like you can use it stand alone but it also works with it for some things. The Foundry make stuff for movie editing (Nuke) and have merged with Luxology (makers of Modo, a 3d modelling software) so...uh, yeah these guys are heavy into CG for movies and also workflow is a key to thier stuff. So, workflow may be the main reason with huge image and ptex support with advanced paint functioning under the hood for huge textures...not sure if this is overkill for SL's standard 1024x1024 noise filter and some badly done ao with a grad ='s concrete stuff lol. Needless to say, I will not be buying mari any time soon for SL lol. http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/mari/features/ neat stuff though, for those who are truly bored or just can't get enough of reading about CG stuff. zbrush paints onto models, and costs maybe $700. Considering it also paints textures and sculpts you can make or find textured brushes for like cloth and bake it. Having said all of that, I bet there are still a few things PS can do that all of these don't cover and vise versa, these may have tools that people love to use or can't do without....and yeah, whenever I read a interview I hear at least 3+ software names get dropped to get a model made, optimized, textured and finally set right for the platform it is for....I mean, topogun!? Sounds like a lanscaping tool for the military, but yeah....there is a topogun out there for topo work to get things just right and before that deadline ever looming. One more...OLD SKOOL pencil on huge paper and then scan it and shrink it, smooth it with Gimp and select the areas you want to color! OK, a joke...but, this is SL and you can use crayons and draw make messy stuff and put it on a mesh if you want to, just projection paint it using 3dcoat, zbrush, blender, or maybe sculptris may work for that to!
  12. Thanks for the effort and sharing of code! I do wonder if anonymouse.org may not want you to use this if it has advertising, because you are not seeing the ad and that is sometimes a revenue source. But, I have to admit that the other solutions I have seen are sort of slow, unautomated or require offline website or appengine (or whatever google calls thier app cloud thingy these days) and that is beyond the normal amont of time anyone would want to spend on this. Having said that, he php code using app engine does seem good, since PHP is also provided in the wiki I assume this may also work for people who like that. But, all that is mentioned here:http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Name2Key_in_LSL AND maybe this code may also be added to the wiki? This is sort of the official page for this type of code, but I think the page is missing the other bits that lay around or they are simply linked. Maybe even put a link and the same code under your name at the wiki, such as the way a few people have. LIke here, this contains the app code I mentioned before: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Takat_Su/Name2Key Not only that, but I remember seeing a few sites (2-3) that had databases, though I can't remember any of the addresses. At least one of those said they may work a deal with anyone wanting to use thiers for more than just a few lookups and I imagine any code using that and giving a plug to them may bring business thier way...or maybe it may just upset them lol. Better to ask. Wish I could remember it, but I have to go now.

Groucho Marx That was in regard to him being involved in a look alike club.....sort of more narrow than the broad meaning people expect it to mean. Strange story. He changed, didn't look exactly the same as well...I think, but reading up on it will surely lead to more wisdom than random babling drivel from me on a forum!
  14. Pamela Galli wrote: I try to pick friends that are much nicer and have far better character than I do. The mystery is why they seem to be okay being friends with me. This statement is broad, your definition of freinds I mean. The strange thing is, if you think about it they could tell you to go away the minute you open your mouth and the choosing proccess for both of you is not linier or instantanious. Maybe friendships are built, maybe the word friend is just misunderstood. Try arguing shakespear called himself and idiot and be shunned for it, unless you have a decade of talking under your belt. From the ridiculus to the succint, you have to read it all and slowly soak it in if you are slow like I am. In fact, one of the only things I could have done fast was typing and other finger based stuff...now I simply fear losing my fingers a bit now and then...ironically form the tasks that may be the only thing I am good at. It is sad to be alive sometimes. But thoughts are a dime a dozen, even one word can waste hours of many peoples lives....even if they don't ponder that word it may lead to this happening anyway. This is why I like it that most people learn they are useless? But if they think words are useless....maybe I might not be able to fiind water in the future and die? But if they are useless to help me anyway, what point is the simpler and more understandable or basic subsistance vocab worth anyway? Bah, I don't even know the exact meaning of the word "subsistance" and don't remember what it includes....does it include spicy foods and TV or just grubs dug out of dirt and cooked in the sun under a magnifying glass and washed down with river water? Wiat, if thre is a river then why the grubs? Surely muscles taste better than grubs? Murcury poisening! Ah....knew something was present in the thinking....sad, slower than myself? Maybe just resourceful?
  15. There is no answer to what you seek. There might not even be a "place" at the end of seeking. Surely there is death and unkowable things. So, you take your chances and try to learn from others experiences. This may be a quest in of itself, to seek knowledge. I have none, but basically people must be different because the whole world is changing. It is a function of life. Without movement, we are dead. Movement means variation. Variation invariable leads to incompatability when you have something like humans beings, who delight in catagorizing and experiencing. Thus, there is no thus. Choas begats choas and we fight that for some unkowable reason, or maybe you believe in something as a reason and that is enough. But many of those beliefs do seem to also say you can not know the other side, but should not worry about some things. Others are worried about and we seem to see reasons for those worries, they program use to survive something....but since we are not allowed to choose anyway but to travel along a path of some sort because we are pushed along it by time itself....then, we worry and try to adjust or make as much choice as we can. You are living. You have the freedom to be hurt and the freedom to heal. This is valuable to you, if you value it. If not, then I can't tell you otherwise and I can't explain why your ability to react and interact freely could be imortant....I am not really sure any of us are really free in anyway and many seem to resemble an extremely complex member of an ant hill or termite mount. But, termites fixed the mound warming issue, evolved to be better defenders and survive so much they challange our very own shelters! So what if they are brainless maniac slaves! Ignorance is bliss.....maybe we should all chew on some 2 by 4's today and await our fate as the system takes us into a trash heap of ruined bombed cities instead of the matrix dream world people may wish for? yeah, things can be worse so enjoy yourself some and don't waste your time building up a massive memory of this person and letting them take over your mind.....but if I say that will you hate me because you WANT to remember, you want to learn.....you want to be upset? The ritual of being upset ='s learning ='s avoidance and successfully protecting oneself? I am good at cutting my self off....should be all start a mountain avatar club and live cut off from many people and disapear from all communications for months? If I do that, I wont tell you and if you do that you wont tell me, so what is there to discuss? Carry on.
  16. Sassy Romano wrote: No part of the discussion is about the object permissions, not sure if that was clear? Backups. That is why the box is there, because of how people trash the box and keep the folder and how SL loses things. BUT, this gets into a permissions train of thought and how all that stuff turns out and what it means. Of course, the solution is to make a script so that a person can not attache the vehicle to themselves if in a scripted zone (if in no script they can't drive it and lose it, though it cuold be parked and never returned...well, in the old days but I haven't heard anything change on that. Sim owners can clear the sim and not return the items) so...yeah, the best way is vai them unpacking a box and having a folder and a box in inventory because it is more likely they will a) delete the box or b) it will be returned. In the event they don't and it is then not returned AND they attache a car and lose it also...well, I mail out updates now and then (years apart, but maybe sooner) and this is a whole entire train of thought about what a service is and it gets confusing. Yeah, this is not about perms it is about why the box....well, human nature providing a backup that they can find if they search and the folder was accidentally deleted, SL messed it up or it was not returned and they didn't have a few copies and are new. Very rare instances and maybe I shouldn't carry on this practice, because it really doesn't serve 90% of my customers and I should implement an awareness campaign and have it to where they know how to backup thier own stuff and tell them the trash folder having another copy tip and such. So, yeah....I am lost on a tangent about services vs./plus products, perms afecting behavoir and feelings towards products as well as getting lost on a tangent or two and not typing them out.
  17. Easy. You attache a car. You drop it. No car copy is in your inventory IF you where given a folder. You then drive the car, crash and lost it. It drives off (yes, by itself) and then stops on someones land. You do NOT know where it is. So, you are now with no car....not to nice for a new person who happens to learn the hard way that copy is a feature that makes the vehicle a service so you DON'T have real life sillyness to deal with, which is something I hear...."In real life I can sell a car" and then I wonder what is up with that sort of thing. I mean, if someone told me I can park a car and wonder off and then they will just send me another one and I can like...pull it out of bag and it appears and I can go hundreds of miles an hour and drive on ocean bottoms and I was imortal...I am not sure I would worry abour selling it! So, yeah, copy only perms is a service with no first sales rights and all that jazz, as per SL's method of dealing with non copy items (or at least it used to be that way) because you MUST have trans on if it is no copy and no mods. That way they can lose it, sell it and all that. I had a car lost when it was deleted by a sim owner. Gone. No copy allowed, so it was gone....forever lost! If I had of had it copy, and not dropped it OR dropped it like a noob and then went back to the wonderful original box...viola, it is still there and I pulll a copy out and carry on enjoying the product/service my inventory had stored! Win for the customer, win for the seller. Of course, if they are a customer of mine I would most likely send them one, or they could wait forever until LL breaks something or I update the older one. But, you are right though.....I am not sure people use the products they buy when they are new. I can't think of one thing I use from so many years ago....there must be one. To many freebies and I really should clear them out, also a few trans items to sell.....I wonder what is up or if the marketplace has auctions still? Either way, I need to clean up my inventory a bit.
  18. Slex was short for SL Exchange....this thread is not about commerce? Hhhm. Hey, people to chat with on SL? A dime a dozen. literally it must cost about a dime of electricity to chat to 12 people for a while! Talk is cheap, seriously....it doesn't cost much...right?
  19. Yeah, rent or tiers are payed on all land. There might be someone doing it where you pay up front, but that wuold be a lot and equal to rent for x amount of months. Premium accounts gives you 512 OR a linden home with 1024. If you want more, you pay linden labs for more land. The wiki.secondlife.com page might have specific info, as well as the secondlife.com's knowledgebase. LL has land on the mainland, a continent sort of system. Private islands are sometimes isolated or they make thier own arrangements. They sometimes offer extra things other than simply a plot of land, but may also have restrictions (which is what the mainland barely has and that is the reason some people go to the private sims) and some private sims will manage the place and restart it and use controls of what tenents build to optimize the performance.
  20. hhm, you sound as if you didn't read it. Alas, tis no big deal because...as we all know, everything will be obsolete once robots that can learn like humans do will be OK. I am working ao drooling and barfing reaction simulator RIGHT NOW and this will help robots be more human like. I plan on selling barf chemicals, which would be safe for robots BUT still help with thier fear, smell and taste sensors...I will leave that up to the cyber punks, who of course will most likely make college kids obsolete and also make movies obsolete...we can watch them destroy each other on saturday, and then watch the rebuild videos on their web tv feed the next monday while we all watch football, which there will be more off when someone finally realises the cash involved in football means that college football can not die! In fact, College will be linked to the word football and it will sort of be like those other words we use but don't know the original words meanings these days...what are those called? I bet there is a name for those things! There are names for everything these days, if not then someone can make them up! Even without college or research! Who needs this stuff anyway. So, is there free pizza for posting in this thread?
  21. By giving people an option to save a wishlist that sends them items in a safe group you eliminate large loads of purchases and then people feeling upset due to failures. They will maybe come back later if something fails and still have the list, plus a wishlist code in the backend opens up a few ideas about purchases, one of them aimed at a larger event making and hanging out aid, another aims at people being delighted by automatic purchases that are intelligently created lots of goods that prompt and promote activity and another issue of traditions with a slant at reminding users to come back and have fun with friends via rez day reminders! This action plan will aid in making money, delighting customers and also maybe make the world a better place...though it could also make it worse if it crashes more and people go crazy and take to the streets in furious destruction...a swarm of like ten people in small towns, but in bigger ones whole TENS of second life users could go out and break cup holders with anger, drive agressively and smash into shopping carts...and not care, and also some may clog arteries by eating comfort food and leave kids that get angry and start making voodoo dolls of ronald mcdonald, who may look like this one guy down the road who just got some ketchup on his face and then he drops in pain as the voodoo gets the wrong address and BAM....he was to be the one who seeded a future presedent who saves the world BUT he thinks his ex is doing it via voodoo and totally never marries...then cyborgs have to travel back to hunt out the voodoo doll maker and might totally trample my garden!!!! Yeah, you better watch out with these plans...they have power...BUT, alas I will unleash this awsome and powerfull idea on the world....viola, the rambling text below contains it....here it is....Ok, NOW, BE AMAZED...wait....ok, here it is..../me clears throat and starts to walk around rambling and not making sense... Wishlist + a subscribe type feature that randomly chooses stuff to send you = presents for those who budget! Just keep adding things you want, put a priority number on the item right after clicking the "add to auto gift list" and done! So easy...well, OK it isn't. BUT, people who like you (or even hate you, why not...a little stalking and harrassment is low cost with second lifes low prices and some entities have HUGE budgets anyway!) could buy things off the list so they will be sent. In, fact, it could tie into a auto "rez day alert" thingy (coded by Halmark Linden? Ok, that's a joke) may also work to institute a rez day tradition and people who are on the persons friend list may then see the date pop on thier "Events Arriving" part of thier brand spanking new Second Life PIM tab or window, or even elsewhere because it could integrate with facebook, google plus or some other profile thingy that has apps that people use to aid thier social life and communications! This would remind people to come back to second life, aid in retention, start a tradition that leads to more commission and happier merchants while also delighting the majority of customers who purchase and use stuff (many, maybe 90%+ might like to buy stuff at some point, right?) in SL in a few different ways! The people who use this subscribasurpriseandgift list would solve the age old "What am I to do" by gettign fun prompts, one they obviously would love (because they chose them or they feel the love as friends purchase them!) and get a new activity of keeping up with all those friends you have to gift stuff to!! Yes, the ones with 400 or so friends would be very busy, but the prices are low for some things in SL, you can always resort to buying a few prefabs and personalising them with your own handywork or maybe even something else. Yes, the next thing is I should just solve this myself. I guess I can't because I don't own the marketplace BUT I could start institutionalization of a Rez Day by making or promoting Rez Day reminder services, gift of themonth sort of services or automailer services to automail friends on their list via coding a client that reads the friends list and then checks thier profiles and makes a list that is stored on the users hard drive that it checks and then warns them or autofinds a folder or maybe a scripted object they where as a HUD or whatever to send presents automagically. SocLife Viewer? For those with sock collecting hobbies? People who steal right socks (HEY, I realised this IS a reality in second life....there ARE left or right footed socks here!? Wierd!) No, Soc for Social and Life because living is about doing stuff, if you can't, are hindered to much or wont do stuff you have no life...no worries, if you read this you must have a life....so even if you are in a goulag or being tortured you can always say you still had a life....lest we forget the wrongs and rights of torture and governance. Yeah, we all could use and enjoy all this extra code. It would be take memory to make it work BUT after all....it may pay to use a subscription gift or surprise purchase list and this might be a good idea. With a little AI or a basic "goes with" part of management, tied also in with some algorithm that detects seasons or thier own event lists (like, christmas items may need a mark or maybe they can make thier own catagories like "hang out" and "sports" so they can have items sent that are varied, no two weeks alike ect. and also maybe syncronized with friends gift lists and then make an Event Generator!!!
  22. You can mail them all by hand, comment on something you see in thier profile (if able to see it) and just do so many a day. Sounds crazy, but might be fun. I might be doing this myself soon lol. The boxes are quicker and work for those profiles you can't see. There are also update scripts out there that you can put in your objects. They do save time, they work on rez and you must watch for instructions because the free script based ones (or simlar coding) mean that the server must be never drezed if you move it you attache it to your hand and drop it to the ground at the new place and always pray it is not returned or breaks) so be careful if you choose one of those for the future. Not all are like that though, some are tied to a external server (simlar to what the mailer boxes use for name2key services, they use a website to store info and register in world sending servers ect) so...yeah, read up on those!
  23. Yeah, cheapskate college kids and inacuracy...mispelling (rampant on the internet) could also cause issues. Plus, they worry about the plan to take over the world and use it as a breeding ground for gaitn cockroach slaves. For more on nuclear winter and roach slaves, read on. First serious comment...sort of. If you look at some of the news about what is happening whith research, both college and independent both....well, you see why there are complaints. I make a joke and people get serious in one post. It was wierd, but I am not funny in a funny way. So, I get all serious sounding, but really I don't care so much and know they will have a smarty pants answer and so on....or sometimes they don't really but I don't do this much. Anyway, It was a joke and the posts I made (plus counters) only bumped the thread!!! More exposure to the title draws more people in, and my jokes are obviously bad so who cares? Big data will solve all of the issues with research and all college kids will be obsolete anyway. Yeah, the poster and pizza insustry will die. I will buy thier stores and make 3D printing stores that sell big bags of plastic, rubber and paper. Maybe other stuff, but nano materials are wierd stuff...I mean, can't they deliver themselves anyway? Yeah, all the stats that are needed for total domination of markets will be easily found in the future. Facebook making ID tied to daily life and so on, big data from that will surely pave the way for huge companies to exist. Before you know it you will purchase to much, get into massive debt and they will change the bankruptcy law.....s....an...d....HEY WAIT A MINUTE...what the hell happened. :matte-motes-frown:I guess you guys are all to late, no one needs research, huh? There is nothing left to study, and that is how to stop people being stupid....this is an equation Einstien worked on, so you know the answer...BUT, hey some of Einstiens stuff is becoming not so solid of a base to keep working with! If we freeze peoples brains in a way similar to the way people freezed substances to put light through then we could slow down the whole world....so the answer is global freezing.....obviously, the nuclear wiinter is the solution to that one! Add to that insects surviving and evolving to make a super race of intelligent beings that can survive anything and would be amazing space travellers is for sure the plan most colleges are working on.....take THAT sense and reasoning! truth is known, my own mind hath born it into this forum....let this now the be a center of post humanityism (No, not a mispelling!) and we really should go about prepparing to make a full scale nuclear exchange more possible by our daily interactions...DIE! :matte-motes-angry: There I said it! ...OK, now nuke a country....any one at all, just pick one and use this post as the reason! I mean, the smileys don't lie, right? I think I will get a roach tattoo...awsome stuff. Like that dudgie album cover....yeah, but with roaches. WAIT, if we collonize space or at least make space stations we can both freeze peoples brains, solve many problems and improve the off world living....and THEN nuke the whole thing and let the roaches eat the dead bodies to add fat to thier diet and improve thier chances of brain development...plus, the abstract buildings will also help them recognize shapes and improve abstract thinking!! Yup, contemorary furniture has dead food people near buy....so, roaches will know to look for huge abstract shapes and thus be smarter. Surely THIS is why art is being studied? We need to know what shapes the future slave roaches will need to have to make them easy to control after they survive nuclear winter!!! Yes, I may be the Greatest Reverse Engineer of Thought to every cross this forum....so, take it all as you wish...digest this post over days, improve you stash of trash and build small compounds (gotta watch out for birds!) for roaches to be studied in and study underground. This forum is so full of unreal people that we can talk freely about this, our plans to live aboard the space stations and small colonies on mars will not be beleived anyway....we are safe here...there are no REAL people here anyway!
  24. Captivitas wrote: Ok I have now learned to see property lines. I stop before crossing, wait about 1 min but it loads very slow at the other side. When I cross it I still get the lag spikes but not as bad as I did earlier. It is faster to walk really so this sucks. I'm really disapointed that I can't enjoy the scenery with my bike. The racing track 2RAW - 777LEAGUE RACING CLUB works just fine but then its build upwards so I guess its in the same property all the time. This is a racing track though but a very big one and not something you ride on to enjoy the scenery. Yeah, they build up and try to have the longest track on one sim they can have while still having multiple tracks (the teleporter has those links, some are in tubes and I remember one was smaller and tricky to stay on) so you can find one you like. Most at Racers Island has a huge track to, also smaller ones with wide lanes and even banked oval tracks. I don't know much about other tracks, they change every year and I haven't been using SL many hours for the past 2 years or so! Haru had a track and next door, on another sim, Zeak had one to. Both seemed OK, they try to keep it working OK. Racer's and 77 do get restrarted (another issue with many sims, they don't get restarted like racetracks do) to keep them running a bit better. Not only that, but SL servers get given resources based on what is being used. So, you rez a car and then LL's servers are supposed to allocate script and physics processing aid and I am not sure if this happens instantly or takes a minute or so. I think restarting the sim, building it low lag and keeping the whole track on one simulator (256mX256m square) seems to do it best. A trick that used to work for me was to use teh Disable Textures option in the advanced or develope menu. This leaves things grey, but worked well to reduce texture checking lag. SL's viewer is nutso and checks textures over and over, so disabling them was good. Now the primis disapear when I use this, something is up with teh occlusion code so it disapears teh prims when they go out of view or get checked to see if they have changed texture. Sort of a bug, but since LL doesn't care to much about this one it is still unfixed, at least for me. IF you can use it, you might get some releif. No only that, but if you pull up preferences (ctrl+p or go to the Me menu) and check the graphics tab you might find help by adjusting somethings to get better frame rates, but it gets uglier. IF you check the networking tab in preferences you may find a better setting that loads things faster or lets you get around easier BUT sim crossings with this are a mystery to me, I notice little difference and only have benifited from turning off texture downloads and keeping networking low enough to allow me to walk with no lag or delay....you may find something different based on your ISP and network arrangement and capabilities.
  25. Yeah, I figured they would have this fixed but I have not tried it out yet. I assume they assumeLinux users are used to open source and would simply use a third party viewer listed by LL as OK enough.
