  1. I must ad that humans do things that kill them, or at least increase thier risks. I am not saying people should sucker people, trick them or otherwise use them and warnings are sometimes silly BUT they do at least get some things sorted and work to some extent for some people. Cars will still kill more people than hallucinating virtual worlders. If we never had personal transportation at all then we might also have had much different lives and lost some freedoms? Who knows, but some people feel very trapped by not having personal transportation and virtual reality is similar in that you see, hear, and commune differently and it is akin to a different place that you are. So much so, even websites are referred to as being "gone to" and the concept of virtual community is strong enough to count almost equal to "real" communities to many people. This will not change, people die to be popular, fashionable and to kill boredom. They die each day as they reach death, so they choose to spend that time dieing with something they like, that fascinates them or otherwise kills the time. Who knows, but food, transportation, socializing (stress release chemicals, so much so terrorist attacks and war cause still birth increases!) and who knows what other things are possibly removing life more so than we wish them to. So, virtual reality will be around. Kinects are a mass market success? Sold tonnes, used by tonnes and then collect dust. In that respect, I believe you. More, another kinect is made, another phone or tablet is bought, and then people will go and hand make some food even though factories are more than capable of making edible food....it may kill you, but why not have on of those deadly things for desert as well as home made stuff that might have burned you or set your kitchen on fire? Sadly, this is not a attitude that says go do anything because I think it is wise to let people know they should eat some veggies in my signature space below!...it reminds me to sometimes to, but IF you eat organic you can't not wash them because ecoli may be present. I am not saying everyone will have a headset, not like everyone ends up with a phone. These sets are expensive, but will everyone try one of see one? Maybe, I used game systems at friends houses (even back yards lol) and swapped games with people because it was all to much money for our families. Then arcades where there, TV shows (yes, even with virtual reality used....this was non US TV but movies also ended up with this stuff in it and sci fi books!) so....virtual reality is already around, already in use in military simulators. Kinects prove you can sell the stuff, people will use it and unfortunatly they also end up sitting on shelves at some point. Google glass is not something that matters as much as phones do. WebTV looked amazing, but how many uses are there really for it? Talk with TV shows at the same time....well, some do that I guess. But webtv didn't displace the normal PC and I think Youtube took off and became a staple of many web users online time usage. The darn thing is just another website, but now set top streaming boxes are around. Android computers that stream vids to tv's! Web tv is back? Sort of, but this is how it works right. Glass may be to much money, but hype will sell it and it can collect dust but for that one or two events...like Kinect and some friends asking to use it because they never tried it yet lol. Others will make it like thier PalmOS device, all the time and for work or play. PalmOS is not popular, but was controversially seen as useless or very useful. Either way, palm computing was around with winCE and flip up "Palm Tops" and then everyone was acting like the iPhone was some genius that had invented mobile computing....n00bs with blogs and computer science degrees make me laugh. Nerds because they install grandma's software, but never smelled burning flux or gazed upon a PCboard....sad stuff, and I don't consider myself a nerd...just curious of how things work. Ah, back to my useless life while I see Ux errors, fake nerdish elites talk junk about stuff they don't know about and insult thier schools alumni because they will not do research.....at least I have the decency to admit I am obsurdly not a pro, warn they should research it for themselves...so, look up flux or Palm Tops....whatever. Have fun and at least not many here act like virtual reality never existed before the oculus rift...but that will start soon maybe? lol. Good greif, what fun.
  2. iCade wrote: Before you do any of the things the above two have stated, sometimes it already helps to simply unplug your computer, to open it and to clear the innards of it with a can of compressed air, a vacuum cleaner (very VERY carefully but that's what I have been doing for years) and a normal small painters brush. I have three cats, so once every two month I open up my tower and clear out all the dust bunnies and cat hair. I've had the same problem as you two years ago and tried a lot of things, including going into the BIOS, and then a friend of mine pointed out to just open the comp and check how dirty it's innards are. Boy was that a sight Just saying, sometimes the easiest solutions help, but only sometimes, in case this doesn't help you go for the suggestions above, they're very good. I would NOT recommed a painters brush because of static threat to chips, compressed air is good though. IF you do wish to poke around in a PC wear cotten, not staic producinig stuff. Static, even though you do NOT feel it is present and can kill electronics with far far less than you may think. Having said that, I myself don't go crazy about this and have pulled parts and built PC's without a electrostatic mat or wrist band thingy. I also have shocked myself workiing on amps, solder stuff and have ruined electronic boards. Hi, I am the crazy guy with a stack of broken parts and "dead" things and spends my worthless hours getting cut up and injured, falling over, hunched over 20 year old engines and even safety goggles can't stop bits of flying junk flying at my flesh and eyes! So, while I think and sometimes say "Just pull the side of it, it'll run cooler" I forget to mention that you may also be at risk of electromagnetic radiation, because the FCC only tests medical effects of PC's in thier cases. You may have fun with soldering irons, but wear goggles or eye protection because I have a guy working on stuff get it explode (tiny explosion) and go in his eye. It doesn't just happen to some people, it seems to happen to me and people I have been around lol. So, have fun tearing into stuff because one day it may be your last day that you hand works because you are NOT lucky and have your fingers pull away from the transformer like they did when I was just a crazy lad with a screwdriver and no worries. You may even reach with another hand and then it stops your heart! So, even though this is a "necro" thread, I will post this so you do not end up with necro tissue, necro chips or necro hope for fixing things. I did get PC's working, kept engines started and done work with them dozens of time. The guy didn't go lind or even need medical attention, though small damages may manifest themselves later (I think risk of detached retna for the blow to the eye...can't remember but maybe also cataracts...sad stuff for when I am older ) so...yes, no, maybe and you are risking yourself. And, yeah...for the most part you will not break stuff but may break stuff. And chips that are broken sometimes go dead totally, but sometimes intermittantly or have a glitch. I have seen this in a GPU I overheated, it worked sometimes and then not and then never and one works for like 5 seconds and then the screen goes crazy messy.

Just need a few volunteers for my ocular nerve implant prototype tests and I'm off to Kickstarter. Anyone? Virtual reality goggles were "so yesterday" when I first saw them more than twenty five years ago. I think immersive virtual reality is dead, to be replaced by minimally invasive augmentations to real life. There will be small niches for such things as Oculus Rift, but I don't think the mainstream will never adopt them. And implantible gizmos are a loooooooooong way off, even if you only consider malpractice insurance for such elective procedures. Right now we are typing on a forum, forums are a slightly advanced version of bullitinn board systems. We can embed some stuff, like images or vids. That was like available in HTML 3 or 4, we are only at HTML 5 with animation and programming features (like being able to stream a video with interface in the browser) and even with webcams and faster net we still see people using the forums. Forums, webcams, virtual reality, real reality with augmentations ALL OF IT, MORE OF IT AND MORE. Wait, there is only so much time in the day? Labor saving and time saving devices have been around for many many milleniium! Humanity is obsessed with more life, more living within that more and more veriaty...MORE. MORE. not one killing, this BS about disruption and death is a disease. We think big black albums are dead, more LP's and turntables BUT it is still selling. It just changes, makes room for other stuff and many individual business go dead. There are STILL horse and carriages, horese are pets these days and some are going BACk to using horses instead of tractors as we simply choose experiences and new markets, not new just MORE markets flux back and forth in size. The more things change, the more things are more and the changes are changing. They may be different fluctuations, different arrangments of things barely familliar but they are still there. Molocules rearrange, death is when something is not recognizable and not funcitioning. No death of text has arrived, radio has many listeners despite the video star. Radio ga ga whatever. Disruption? Who cares, morethings and hopefully not even letting them give space because hopefully the things we want rid of will be ridden more so. So, more time to do as we please so we can do MORE. maybe som forums, then some video's and then some virtual reality and then go out for the night....maybe at that location we can try out some new augmented reality and then go sit with friends and make home made ice cream as the sun rises on a warm summer morning with NO bugs biting us, NO job that requires us to go in early to handle things that should be automated. Why should a vintage ice cream maker not sit beside a pair of goggles or 3d scanner as the next day for you to scan it and then make fun with it in a virtual world as well? Then pics of that posted on a forum? MORE.
  4. It works for both theives and honest men alike. THIS is why the DMCA doesn't not do what you think it does, because the thief may attack YOU with a DMCA! It is to stop him from attacking you and is more or less part of a proof making system to show you did due diligence, you loose copyright if you don't show or prove you made the stuff, in some countries. An example is Carol Shelbies claim to the "Cobra" car. The Cobra didn't exist, it is a car called and Ace. He got one from the british company who makes them, put a big engine in it and worked some magic and then his team won some races! The look, the design and name where his, if he claimed them. He never did, then he got sick of seeing people selling stuff with essentially his name and the creations name on it. That package for the Ace was his, to him. So, he finally went to court and lost. It was decades people had used it, THIS is the threat that DMCA stops. YOU can make sure you where upset, you did own that peice and voiced it. it is a official claim, just like you can go a step further and register things with the copyrights office. It is more protection, more proof and part of a process. After a year you are supposed to take the guy to court. So, send him notices you are not happy (be nice, harrassment is against TOS and strong language or frequent messages may be considered as such and YOU get banned....seriously, I have heard this was part of the lamentations of the DMCA letter senders. I am using the acronym (and spelling acronym wrong to?) as DMCA is the act, you don't "DMCA them" and I bet there is a name for the notice or letter. But, yeah. They are protecting you AND you are involved in making proof they are violating, if LL doesn't tell them why it was delisted OR they have to read something other than a specific note saying why.....guess what, SL borks and it is common for inventory to go down and auto red flagging and such. They think the word "sexy" in the description got them into trouble and they list it again. So, tell them politely if it concerns you and be careful not to say much, what you say may end up used in a court against you somehow OR they report YOU for TOS lol. I am NOT your lawyer, this is legal BS and I hate it so keep that in mind. I only post because I think people are trolling sometimes with this OR they seem unsofisticated a bit and are looking for help....so, I half joke and half point out what was said here previously OR on the old xstreetSl forums I used to frequent.
  5. CheriColette wrote: That made for interesting reading I glad Im finding sl now and not back then.....it was hard enough for me to learn things with out all the hassles you guys had thrown into the mix. (((HUGS)))) for Hugsy At sandboxes it was always just a matter of time before someone had a cage gun thingy fired at them. You ended up having to relog. The big growth in population, which stagnated and actually dropped a bit as far as people all logged in at once, meant asset servers where failing a lot. Tonnes of freebie stuff at freebie places. The stuff is still around I bet, but I don't know if there was as many full sims full of free stuff like there used to be. You could dig through the boxes and find all sorts of projects. I went to Yadni's today, it is not busy as it was way way back when I first started. The job machine is still there, but I think it is broken. I am not sure many got jobs from it, sort of similar to now in that there just isn't that many jobs in SL and they pay very very little, just play money really. Crazy thing was all the camping, I used to drive around 4 sims that a power company ran, an italian one. They would make announcements or do events and I would laugh at how I don't understand Italian. They got traffic and that meant higher up results in the search, back in the day. So, I drove through sim crossings, underwater 45 seconds or so if I was quick. 4 sims, racing around in thier logo'd car for pennies lol. The sims had 15+ people on some of them lol. It was a lag nightmare, but I battled on as I fell asleep at the wheel. Upload money, rent money and all that stuff to get my business started. Now I leave it on the marketplace and see pitifully small sales really, but somehow like checking on it and am still working on upgrading everything.
  6. I am guessing your computer may be to hot. No, I don't want to ask it out on a date or see it in beach clothing on a hot day! I think it may be the CPU overheating. SL client uses the CPU heavily. OVerheating is bad! It eventually can kill the chip by moving the particles to far apart and it never turns on again. Maybe power supply as well, overheating or to much power. Did you upgrade your GPU card lately? Maybe something overheats and disconects something inside, though this is maybe very rare. More room around the PC or laptop and maybe point a fan at it to help it out. Maybe turn down your screen resolution to like 1024X786 or whatever is close to that, sub 1000sX1000s basically. YOu can sort of run SL with 800X600 if you hit cntrl+p and find the slider that has UI size and slide it all the way to the left so it is like .75 or less. This is so you can see the buttons better after making the screen make less dots per inch. This may help but you may need fans changed or cleaned, maybe make sure everything is tightly in it's sockets. Some people even pull the heatsinks and apply new goowy cold goop stuff, thermal paste, to the CPU heatsink every so many years. Not sure if it helps, but you can kill components inside so learning some basic repair stuff (static electricity kills parts sometimes, chips more specifically) so...yeah, maybe learn that stuff or find a tech. Hey, I think they have temprature utilities that work with some computers. You may also have an option to turn up fan speed at different tempratures in yoru system BIOS. Once again, might need to learn something about this. I am sure a tech may help check if it is overheating, he may even have a thermometer to help him find out if the motherboard inside has no temprature sensors. Who knows, and I don't know how much they charge these days but it used to be like 40$ or so for an hour or two of work.
  7. Animators would know why they do that, because people DO smile using thier eyes as much as mouth, the eyes are so important though that if they mess it up they get the response similar to yours lol. Eyes to squint or change when people really truuly smile, photographers know as well I guess. But, really strange stuff in the SL av because it looks like it is a bit evil or sarcastic and mean, depending on the av shape and my mood lol.
  8. Orca Flotta wrote: This is in basic viewr mode catagory? Yeah, Peonald, this section is more or less dead since LL stopped making that shtoopid basic viewer. They are just too lazy and uncaring to remove this section from the forums. But now I quite like it again since it seems just the right category if you don't know if your problem is viewer or server side. Yeah, someone may think "no, I don't program servers" and "Oh, I am not advanced!" so this works I guess. Funny stuff. Bugs are so aplenty that some of them seem like normal features
  9. Prims and mesh are not easily mixed for many builds. Though the sculpt studio maker guy, maybe others, did make a prim to mesh thingy that helps a lot to use priims you are still technically ending up with mesh after you bring those exports into your 3d prog and add to them. As far as clothing goes, anyway. So, people saying they have really great builds in prims and don't see the point in upgrading to mesh sort of can upgrade those by exporting them using that software or another that does the same. Hard to say priims are obsolete for anything in the whole of SL, but for many things I suppose they are. Prims do load quickly though. So for boxes or simple things that prims work well to make it may work well enough to not bother meshing something up and uploading it. Cheaper and quicker sometimes. But for clothes? Well, maybe a bracelet? But even that might have some bump mapping sort of enhancement these days and a prim isn't mapped to easily to mimic and get good textures for, so you end up just using mesh and it ends up with lower impact as well. So, yeah....for clothes I guess they are. Sculpts? Maybe not entirely, they may have a better impact count or prim count, but I am not sure.
  10. I don't think Canoro Philipp wrote: how about these names for eras: Space Era First Attempt: Hypergrid A New Continent on the Horizon: Zindra We are All Equal: the death of Last Names The Resurrection: Phillip Linden comes back The Renaissance: Rodvik Interesting post! Not only this one, but the other one. I just kept thinking about it and got to this one and it made me think of it in a broader way. So, humorously I will attempt to look at the different ways people study Virtual Worlds and the Virtual Universe. Theologians/Cosmologists. Basically it is like religion, these humble grids are a part of building a sort of after-human (similar to an after life) or a heaven. For those people it is part of the next step of humanity or intelligent life, imortality. They believe whole heartedly in the singularity and may spell it with capitals. It is The Singularity! Maybe the only era here is pre and post. The other eras are a concern of other things, only timelines of tech development towards the singularity count. I shouldn't say "them" and say it is a type of person, because at any time a person can think on this level or have opinions. SL fits into the thinking here, but far more importantly is the tech, the mental social learning and SL is more like a lab. It doesn't exist as a entity worth to much era naming though? Not sure, just thoughts of the top of my head. Girdologists/Cosmologist sort of thinking. Who would see teh Hyergrid as the ultimate. Singularity is not a concern really. All grids are a concern, and any other system that is not really a grid maybe to. It is about the universe, what it is made up of. Tech would be more of a focus? SL's tech, hardware and such are important and the rest of the catagories handle othe stuff. The grid and who does what, following the money and incentive may be interesting. Sociologists. They would focus on how it affects human social groups. So, eras would be based on how they effected the overal makeup of the population and thier social activities? MBA. Money. All Money. All business. Business law, TOS and all that stuff. Historian would maybe see major influences that where more general. This is where we get words like "Renaisence" used? So, as far as a social and history slant. I can't say right now is a Renaisence. I do think mesh and more freedom to upload things with new tech, like a updated avatar, as being something that may be seen as that. But, that is from a creative perspective and I am not sure creative types are all there is to it. From the stand point of a physcology...I think a person would not see the majority of users seeing a history as affecting them. So, they experience non of this. Creativity in SL is hurt for some, not for others. Some indulged in prims and I know people will bash an editor for choosing a non top of the line artist for an art book and I have a theory that if the bar is lower, not low, it enables a flow state. A mental state that enables a person to have fun, and they also feel more confident they are pro level. If they think they can make it, they buy more books. Someone already out there may agree that what was in the book was adaquate, but they want to learn from the best and feel beginners are being cheated. Prims did this, they enabled people to feel like they could do it! It was a flourishing of art for many. Those builds where private, maybe even those same people (me!) end up learning mesh for sculpties. I figured I could do better than with prims, prim counts restricting me (once again, the axiam about limits freeing oneself....even though I hate it and am glad mesh uploads are here!) so...yeah, it is crazy to say this. But restrictions are not always the worst thing, and priims where not really a restriction to some...they where a good excuse to give it a shot. You saw the worst you could do in the sandboxes, another hilariously restrictive space that almost frees people from mental blocks and hurdles. Surely you can do better than that horrid thing over there in the corner...even though it looked fun to build! So, you figure at least it will be fun! So, you keep going. If Prims where so good though, I never may have bothered with sculpts or mesh as much! I have more fun with mesh, building in a quick speedy offline purpose built environ and youtube, CG Society.org and various other sites are inspirational and slightly intimidating at the same time. But, I already started so feel encouraged at times. If it wheren't for real life issues I would have meshed up a storm. It is interesting, satisfying many times, to see a render. Just enough magic and builds may be a bit slow for me, but faster and more gratifying other art mediums at this point in my life. Wow, to much. I never got around to other perspectives. So I think we are still to see if this is a renaissance, but I also wonder if we are basically in a longer running renaisence the web and software have brought about. SL is just a small part of that, though important for virtual reality fans and casual fanish people (me) to where it occupies some hours of thought each month! Maybe I would see eras like this: Campy Tribe Ville/VC wants his moneh...release the Hippos!! era. This is the begining, pivoting like a off balance top maybe? Starts off as an idea with a very minecraft feel. Nope, they make a shared creative world that the users biuld. Land barons is what they focus on, they sell the land and host it for tier. BUT, the tribe of beginners get land to help start things off. Small tribes just share stuff, they don't sell as much and basic needs are met and some fun had. They may look very similar and don't have tonnes of possesions. Anarchy in the SL. The death of the tribe. This is akin to the huge tribe building/post tribe stuff that happens when Rome was being built. SL is now hurtling toward a kingdom or empire. But it is anarchy, greifing and other stuff coexist with new additions of money and so on. Land barons rise during this time and Ashne is know starting the next part. The Empire Will Rise. Empire because greifing was reduced, money here to stay and land barons are multiple. Lindens dont' hang around the camp fire now, that ended last era and was here to stay. We see business types, crazy banks come along and a general sense of building and empire seperate from the real world. I remember the banks, gambling had just been banned and I attended a debate where people talked about Virtual worlds should or could be seen as seperate nations. The open source initiatives where seen in the grids poping up and the idea was SL may become the very most important and prolific virtual world around the web. Bans on unsightly things, gotta keep the city pretty for the Citizens of rom....SL. The merchants not only still deal with barbarian attacks(griefers) but still end up with fires (lag, search problems) The Fall of Empire that Never Existed. Ah, Mark Kingdom is seen as to blame because people seemed to think he didn't fit in lol. A victim of bullying almost, he is seen as a time when SL had stamped out the banks, stopped griefers and we where now like citizens of an empire that could grow...HE killed it! lol. Not all feel this way, the adult thingy also seemed to be an issue. SL is split! Orthodox SL in the mature area, with G areas around it for the ultra orthodox and Zindra like...well, like Zindra. Once again, hard to compare. Home Town SL. Now we see SL is sort of like a big big place, the same old stuff happens really, but less intense. No wild west shootout sort of anarchy griefing, but still griefing. Silly rules, strange rules and everyone is worried. The real world intrudes so much that it is now just like you go there after being part of the real world, like a person who drives to thier small town to relax and hang out after driving 2 hours+ from work in LA. Before long we see the next era.... Gated Community SL. This is where we almost get told to what color mail box to have....ah, sort of did go through that with restrictions on third party viewers and so on. SL is more on the web, forums open and so on. No huge walls around a walled garden, that was made as to look like a castle in the empire attempts period. After this, I can't say I will name a period. It is hard to say, but it become much less of a city, a Rome in the making, as time goes on. Open source efforts and LL's dedication to softare aside from SL mean less growth for SL I feel. Virtual reality grows, in a place far away from SL. But it grows, it grows everywhere on the web to the point many will use it seemlessly with other options. Like reading a newspaper while the TV is on after waking up to a clock radio broadcast then getting into your car and listening to a talk show...yeah, no talking in the town square or on the porch but radio transmitted.
  11. Yes. I think this is why real world stores may switch to using virtual world like showrooms that mimic a real world store. I mean, even the latest pop up store craze may work with this because if people notice the brand they might remember they want to see something and remember details about the product if the store matches the virtual one they saw. Of course, all we need is a scientific study to prove it and consultants to take it up, then a guy writes a book about it because he is a "guru" and it all becomes part of a craze. Then some start to hate it, others modify or change the idea and repackage it and sell it. Experts, interior designers and all that jump on board and companies are bombarded with ads for V2R world stores. Then again, maybe not lol.
  12. This is in basic viewr mode catagory? You may need to use advanced to do the below stuff. If you are interested in the tech, I bet you are not afraid of the advanced settings or even the developer menu's! Help menu then lag meter. It may help point you in the right direction. I bet it is ping time, this is a network thing and maybe also another person on the net. Maybe something downloading in the background. Plus, did you see the SL wiki entry or knowledge base article yet? Here it is: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-improve-Viewer-performance/ta-p/1316923 It sounds like ping time to me. Ctrl+Shift+1 plus looking at ping time, which is sort of near the top. The freezing reminds me of this type of thing. I don't think it is your RAM or PC. SL runs on old Pentium 4 (single SPU, slower ram speeds even running at 333mhz bus speeds and AGP Gpu)though I am sure the system reqs say something more. GPU's though, this is another issue and you end up turning off most features when usind old AGP cards. They sometimes have the shader support, but the AGP system is slow, RAM is slow and so on. So, very low frames per second. If it is network, your third party viewer may or may not have the automatic latest client download option, so this may not apply. But, turn this off if you want to not get it downloading stuff when you start up the viewer. Just press cntrl + P or use the "Me" menu and "Preferences." and toward the bottom tab, maybe even the bottom tab at the left side there is an entry for automatically downloading viewers, maybe try choosinig to manually download them. Not only that, but a check box for taking part in test viewers. Sometimes I change the invetory download from http to no http (I think it uses UDP then, network protocal stuff) and it helped a whlie back when I ended up just having to uninstall SL as much as I could and delete any folders it left and reinstall. That was a while back, it had some odd issue with the old folders and HTTP was strange. I still turn HTTP off sometimes, I swear it works with fewer bumps. The main reason may be my RAM is slow, HDD slow and whole system basically. So, maybe HTTP is to quick and I get a slow down as it handles inventory or textures? Not sure, but I try and feel that it helps. I also turn off water when I am not seeing it or need to drive. It takes a few FPS off. But, lagging on chat? I think it is ping times or network issues.
  13. For freezes Besides reistting, a script can be put in a vehicle to check the physics state and set it back to true. A few hints at that are obvious, use coordinate get functions and figure the edge and then start checking if it is true or false and set it right. So, looking into: For rubber banding and maybe spinning. Maybe turning off velocity or ping interpolation may help, it is in the devlope menu. More info here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Develop_menu and it basically says, turn off Velocity Interpolation for rubber banding. I think maybe spinning or diving may work better to. Ctrl+Shift+1 may help to understand what may be occuring and figure out if it is a bug directly effecting veihicles OR just something else that in turn causes cars issues. This window doesn't show when you are in mouselook. Mouselook is another way to reduce lag a bit, or it used to be. It may tax your GPU less. I have seen just shrinking the screen down (or changing the resolution with the settings you find for monitors in control panel) helps with GPU speed and if the whole system is running quicker some of these issues may be fixed or eased a bit. But, it sounds like network issues and the velocity interpolation issue. But, if the creator made a lower lag plane it may also be helping a bit by helping the SL client run as quick as it can. SO, I thoguht it may be worth mentioning reducing GPU lag. Mainland driving is so terrible sometimes it is hard to tell if it is bugs or just sims that need restarting or are full of laggy items. Scripts sometimes build up and sims end up being restarted by track managers/owners so I know from the racing tracks that mainland sims, even if you do not cross sims, are maybe not the best places to drive. Not bashing mainland, it has many other benifits and I do drive mainland now and then myself for some sims. IN fact, I am on my way to do just that lol.
  14. I see people have had success with in world stores, so not all of them are vanity items for the love of designing and seeing, experiencing the store for onself. I assume no one is saying ALL sales, ok some may be lol, are lost to online MP. I assume there is a point where they realise the contribution is not worth the expense. I have also seen stats that sims are closing and not as many replacements popping up, in sheer numbers. Specifics may just be home sims, people downsizing or a round of new people that liked owning their own sims but have freinds now and they combined thier efforts to hand out in SL at a lower price. Either way, a downward trend of sims up and running has happened. We have to basically also assume that if someone shops in world, online and sees ads at hangout places they will basically be almost getting a branding effect happening to thier minds. Yes, they are not being brainwashed BUT will remember the place more and then maybe go to thier choice of search and type in the brand! A unique enough brand name means you are found that way much easier. This is to assume your brand is actually seen as being similar, but they will consider it first. If it strikes up conversation, they may see the price as being worth it, otherwise buy on first site because they recognize the brand and simply do not feel like searching to much because they know the general prices and thier budget. They have thier sort of cut off points, persautions by brands or abhorence of branding etc. and that is somethign to consider. A store may have helped sell stuff on the marketplace! This is the issue with stats, and if you ask customers they may not remember or even respond. The ones who respond may lie, be competing merchants or merchants that think you might have freinds who compete or compete in the future. With only a few opinions you may not get a good picture, so I and we can't put much stock in stats but a few stories here may have been interesting and sparked some ideas that we can test ourselves. So far, I guess a conlcusion that I am getting is that people shop when they want to shop. Hanging out usually doesn't mingle well with sales, I assume at least a few people who discovered it did would maybe have spoken BUT the title doesn't ask about events, the strongest feature of a hangout is non sale day related events that bring in regulars and a pitch from the host, MC, DJ or store owner may help to remind and build brand a bit. They may buy, ironically, on the marketplace online lol. So, it is hard to say really other than if you run events and get more sales, no matter where, then the place is worth something. Then you see if the cost is worth the time. Plus, search is important but hard to work and seems that effort on each marketplace is needed but may or may not work so well depending on things that are easy to get a hint at but hard to really 100% prove. SEO is important non the less, either place. Also, SL's community is not entirely a closed world because not only is the marketplace online but the forums may have thier own specific crowd and maybe people who love to support in world hangouts by purchasing, sort of an alternative to tips and donations, may simply only use in world stuff! This means it is hard to figure out where these guys are, they are not easy to reach through search, SEO and those methods are mentioned here a bit. So, forum users are more likely to use the best method or just multiple methods to be part of SL? I mean, shopping is compartmentalised a bit and they don't buy firivolously? See, it is hard to asses but this may lead to some seeking in world by finding out how word of mouth and click to inspect may work out. For example, I have seen this one way of generating traffic but don't know if it worked out well or not. I know one creator who payed people when they clicked the object that was rezzed in world out the front of peoples houses! It gave person who interacted with it a landmark! They also ran a group, you paid to join it BUT you got free stuff and I pressume invited to this landmark thingy. So, if you had low traffic you basically may have only got a discount on your object and the fee you paid to join the group. Another spin on the "oh, I want to see that and know where it came from" click and edit to get the makers name. Though, these days they do have the hover and info option. This went a step further, because people are tempted to interact (especially new people!) they will click it or try to sit on the object. They get an LM. It is hard to track the mention or if the hover and get info. By offering a landmark you get a bit, plus it offers those who don't like spending much cash to get a more expensive item and try out the gaining of a dollar and maybe the freebies from joining the group sweeten the deal enough? Interesting stuff either way. This is the type of idea I wondered about, but more so hangouts that people buy from to support because they know the place depends on it is what I was thinking I would hear about. Not so! Maybe those people are only logging in, not into words so much to focus on SEO, searches and comparing marketplace. Interesting. Maybe another sub forum catagory and a better question may dig up something? Either way, thanks to all that joined in and have helped to at least entertain some forumites and seekers of info on making an in world hangout worth the effort, and of course the caveats to not get to much into it. Any more tales, experiences, stats or ideas quasi-tested on running a supported by sales hangout location? Events that work to build the bottom line to where it was worth running them? Plus, a nod to the ones who are running places for fun because after all many here understand having fun in world and this is, IMO, one of the best excuses to do it. The money is not entirely there, the fun and maybe even laughter may benifit as much as what is expended on the happenings and places.
  15. Ah, I thought it might be something more interesting. Hhhm, terrorist using houses for communications or memorizing things, the method of loci or whatever. They want information on why you put some pattern on a couch, which happens to have been a visual pattern that is used by terrorists as a unlocking photo thingy like a bar code. Hair makers may be more at risk though. I saw a tutorial that uses the bar code generation or font in gimp as a base for motion blurring to get hair textures! I used something else when I was experimenting with hair. Wow, sounds like hair is a drug! lol. And you thought the Peoples Elite and Secret and Popular Front for the Liberation of Cornwall was some sort of crazy joke! They found humor or a muse in a new object you made, that's all. Now, they secretly plan to seek you out and kill you with bad food, british food...yes, but I mean really bad food that is more dangerous than just known in the US to be bland. Meanwhile, the homeland security people are sending the armed EPA soldiers (yeah they have guns to find pollutors and raid places that dumped pollutants lol) to raid your kitchen and arrest you and seek out your sofa for evidence because they think you are involved! Just in case you may have had the same pattern there and used it to communicate or provide unlocking code access! THen, we hear of you in a bay...maybe closer to home, england right? Ah, they lock you in the mens pub bathroom stall letter H! Maybe a really damp place in Ireland? Yeah, they have political stresses with Ireland...yeah, so they put you there in a tiny cold damp place and lock you up with people who want to kill you because they swear you are a spy that was relaying thier codes and you must know the mole! One tortures you with stress positions, the other tries to start riots and chases you around in the damp cold. Sadly, after it is all done we hear of your release. Yet, no one you know is in SL anymore and they upgraded blender like 10 times and changed every single last button and moved to a new way of modelling using PLURBS that have all sorts of cryptic words, buttons and features to make very real looking objects. Object that have emotions and can break, so as you are working you have to make sure you don't turn the rotation tool to fast or a PLURB will shout at you and hide itself and tell other PLURB objects how mean you are. Yet, if you don't toughen them up they will not last long and break when your customers use them! Silly government policies, death, taxes, and phishing scams are all inveitable these days, huh? The funny thing is they seem alike, and are perplexing but also seem to make things work better to some people while others want to rid the world of them! Steve Jobs saying death is a killer app, I think....maybe I misquote...oh well. At the same time, he wants cancer eradicated. Either way, keep on fighting the power establishment...I mean, really, they should lower thier prices with all the cold weather and electric space heaters in use these days!
  16. Wow, winamp is an old software. I remember real player and winamp and all the grazy visualizations people used to have. Things dancing, all kinds of cool colors. I think it was the guy who made the original winamp that makes a DAW software called Reaper. Yeah, fun stuff, though I never used it all much at the time I do remember streaming radio with RealPlayer and winamp was kind of cooler with all the skins and all that lol. Yeah, I can imagine this may effect some peoples worries of stability whlie abating fears for others. I have seen shoutcast advertised for DJ's and land radio. It's a long time for a software to be around, I can't imagine it would ever go away. I feel like that about SL sometimes, but who knows because SL is a bit harder to run and has a more complex element. What it will become and what will change sometimes keeps my mind to occupied. Let's just hope it all gets better for all, stability can be comforting, or at least less worrysome and enables one to plan and do things easier with less to put into the equation or options matrix that we have, sort of a simplification of the odd biochemical calculus and statistics our nuerons may run. Which reminds me to check out some more educational websites than SL forums! lol
  17. It sounds like I am poking fun or challanging the assumption, but I am not. So, sorry to those who are maybe offended or upset and thinking I am calling them out. I really am wondering if anyone could have reacted to the changes by making a hangout sort of place that works. Keeping people around because they love the hangout though...well, people end up spending more than taking out if they like the place and the people. So, maybe it is all bottom line speaking. People might build thier own place, but then again that costs a bit. No wonder sandboxes are pretty busy during peak time lol. People just rezzing things and playing around. So, is a sandbox the best hangout to offer? Strange, but some have lessons, competitions and so on and I spent time at a few myself when I was younger. That was back in the days when greifing was in full swing, so the little sandboxes where welcome. I can't remember how much oranything that I bought, but I have little money so spend little and do know I donated a small amount at various places or bought a thing or two. I doubt I kept the places open alone, one closed and I dont' know wht happened to the others. The one I remember was the hangout! I also rented at a place because of the place being run well enough. I didn't make many sales, but thought it helped overall because customers would find this place the better place. I do know two regulars there are owners of my car, and I saw one customer there visiting. I don't usually hang around people, so I don't see many. But, I guess I figure it works. Several or so sales that covered less than a third of my rent expenditure there...though these are numbers off the top of my head and I feel like it was actually less than that. I left the rest up to the inderect fact people may drive there and that in turn leads to sales that I can't track to there without a huge poll of customers. So, anyway. I had no hangout to really speak of so I don't know if a smaller place would work. But, have seen a few tracks get sales or rentals and even donation and tips from me as a customer. I just doubt a ten dollar tip or even a dollar or two purchase once in a while would help out enough, renting did help though. But, yeah, at some point I am putting out more than what I am going to get out and feel less and less inclined to log in. Less log in, less expending and even less sales. So, maybe it works if the users are able to afford or figure they may have earnigs themselves. Sandboxes must be ahead ache to run though, so not sure about that route lol. maybe group members only sandbox access and events for group only?
  18. I know we see it told, by LL, on the wiki or wherever that we need to try and create a place intead of a just a place with purchase boxes. So, did this work as a way to get sales right in the store? Has anyone figured out any other way to get attract people to the store, or at least maybe discovered a crowd that like hanging out at places and support them by purchases, which I sort of assume is another reason people purchase items over that they just want to find something specific by search and buy it? They would be ones that don't mind stumbling on neat stuff maybe? Thanks for any experiences that answer the question of what a merchant may have success doing to help make SL shopping in world a more common practice than it is already.
  19. I rmember a guy who taught blender and also offered to make almost anything for 20, 000L. I don't know if he is stil around, this was premesh and he worked with painting higher poly or photo to sculpts. Jamie....uh, I can't remember the name know and
  20. The question is not defined enough, the economy of what and what measures? Even that can open up some arguments, because you end up with units defined (if accurate) that mean nothing much to anyone really who understand what they are. In otherwords, to expand on what I am saying.....well, basically money is what people consider economy. But you point to a chart about feeling a sense of belonging...but, belonging if THEY create or if they see creations? What if a creation makes you hate SL and you then find a place where you are feeling more belonging, are we to assume things that make people feel less belonging help them to find places and feel belonging to another group also creatively adding to the economy? There IS no answer to is more better, and the things that obviously effect things are not able to be considered important or not. They just exist. Example: Do people benifit economically from breathing? Now, people say "Poenald, you are stupid and shut up!" and I say, "what is wrong with you, death improves the bank account of a mortician, a coffin maker and may also solve unemployment stats...at least on a mathematical level!" and you claim I am silly. For proof I could point to the Outer Limits, or maybe the Twilight Zone.....many short and long fiction have adressed this one. Fiction is a great realm for this, because no one really knows what would happen unless it happens! What if you could live forever? Breathing is so essential that, believe it or not, THAT is the real question I am sort of asking. How rich could you bank account, wallet, holdiings, or experiences be! Maybe the answer could garner majority support, but what actions are there we can take upon gaining this information? We feel be belong by simply responding, creativly or unso. So.....maybe I should do something creative and post it or use that, because more creativ.....wait! No one said more, less or any measure or what is definable as creative. Confusion, that is all. Economics = belonging...like the economics of belonging? You feel X belongness units, or a cerain % feel belonging when they...wait, who has to create to make things all belonging feeling? And the country stats? Hilarious stuff, I mean do SLer's have country clinging here and what if thier demographics are all over the place? It is hard to define SL, things may seem a cerrtain way and I guess I can think something based on this. But why share this inaccuracy? Because it makes me feel like I belong....ah, so.....I can be meaningless as well? This thread was created to make fun of my posts, or explain them? Well, forget it...I will not answer this question! Does this effect creativity? Ah.....strange, maybe I should have posted a meme related post instead. Who's Creativity? Chuck Noris would create creativity that is like a black hole and suck all of the economy into it and still be able to find a pair of mesh breast appliers and a new skin...bah, it didn't turn out so funny. Oh well.
  21. youhave aposeball for HOW much lol? You are crazy, that is funny BUT....wait, now I want to see it and have the one question everyone must be asking..... DID IT SELL? Even once? lol. I am not saying it is not worth it, I have never seen it. But it does make me laugh, because poses are usually like 50L or so, rarely more than a hundred or two lol. Also, it is funny because of the response and sounds like a fun item to have listed, if you like the responses and such. It is to easy, but if there was a Virtual World Book or Records it might be in there lol. Now I am thinking of doing something like this myself. Making the most detailed, most parts, highest impact, most animated, most soundeded, highest textures sized item in my industry! Obvious appointments spring to mind, and it would take me a while but I could battle through the scripting, God willing because I have a lot of harrassment with the all day voices on top of other things that effect average persons life who has a hard time investing in working for practically nothing lol. Wow, I am off topic now. So, for the OP. Refunds are not usually given, I can imagine you feel upset and I to have felt that. I accidentally, no joke, clicked the wrong button and bought something. It took a long time for me to get the 500L dollars gone, I ended up turning up to the event to try and at least get something out of my money.....they had FREE models to drive for visitors AND, no joke....the free models where easier and just as fast! I could logo up that one top fueler, but the serious funny part was that even though I came in like third and could have maybe won my money back, advertised my company on the one I bought for a few blog pics and to car fans at that race.....they closed!!! It was almost useless for any other racing, it was really bad at steering, I put that effort into my cars when I made them. I learned to modify the scripting before getting sculpting down, driving the darn things was hard for me with lag and such and that car was really bad at steering. Ironically, I used the same script and it's really fast turning was great for other types of racing, I still modifed the script and made it faster and someone who used that bike was winning races with it instead of being second. I offered test drives for it, and that test drive and low price sold it to her. She won, more bought it to try thier hand at it. She said the last race it was her and another guy behind her that took first and second, both on the bike I made. But hardly anyone else was using it, it is mostly in the users PC and the vehicle only provides an edge and sometimes only at a few tracks. Ironically, she won on an oval and the bike was set for mostly twisting road tracks! But, yeah. Funny stuff, an expert at high priced listings! I had to ask, unless you charge $10000000L for constultancy and I must provide a full 10 sims for your presentation, and maybe even do strange things after a long flight to see you? Wow...yikes, but you seem helpful here in the forum....so, yeah....I had to ask, right lol.
  22. Basically more bones and appendages. Range of motion of appendages almost unlimited. Everything benifits from this. All markets, sub cultures or creators of anything. Seriously, vehicles can be attached to an avatar and you can use a weight painted stuff with appendages to move stuff like tank tracks, mayeb even gun turrets. Monster trucks, animals, robots, and mainly hair, dangly thingies on shoes if the extra bones are not simply left unattahed to and SL's avatar not attached to them. Scaling of bones is also another needed feature to work this all out. SL av would look funny, but retaining the appearence sliders and have them work on the av in a way that makes sense BUT allowing overide is what I think would work. I bet mesh (butts) are the main focus though. Hands as well, feet to. The attachments are not so bad, but slightly limited. People like them though and the market that it brings in keeps people busy and entertained. This sort of does the same though. wigglng toes vs using those bones for appendages? Sorry, appendages trump finger and toe bones in my book. More possibilities, not just animals, monsters, draping clothes, hair that flows in the wind and doesn't interesect with the body as much, there is also machines that can benifit. You attache a vehicle to your avatar, sit on the vehicles clear prim to scoot around on and trigger the animations. You end up with tank tracks that bounce as it drives and teh whole things moves right. Turret movement as well, in both directions. Maybe even cars or simulated wheel movement while still having the avatars legs and arms still more or less normal position. I remember thinking of attaching somethig to the avatar feet while driving because no one sees them. BUT, finger and hands are used for expression. But I do question how much and to what extent it is useful in SL because of the way the cam is set and the way peple speak or interact. It is cumbersome to trigger hand animations, though may work well with a HUD that parses speach and looks for emoticons or reacts to /channel# chat messages sent to the hud or attachement. But, who remembers to do this or who would notice exactly what is done with fingers? But I am thinking chat, not the more detiled and close up encounters. Romance may lean toward hands. style and fashion fans want better butts, busts and clothing attachments. I say appendages with all rotation angles allowed would mean even butts and busts may be better for those making attachments. They could animate parts or clothing that covers parts. A limb here and another there, viola you have a shirt that you can partially open and it looks smoothly animated. This obviously is flexible enough to also make cool fun stuff like monsters or parts of monsters that move, liek a limb for a flame attachment or slime spewing attachment. Basically, limbs are not limbs if you give them scaling and more bones. But they work to make more complex animals legs. Dogs and cats become more feasible, and are already very popular. So, this is not for people wantin got make monsters only, it is far more for just animation sake because prim animation is not that great. frames per second is so low on alpha swapping (or lots of mesh to load and render!) with texture swapping forking for somethings but not covering as much and appendages with extra bones of human arms and legs help a whole bunch of different catagores.
  23. Isn't high fidelity helping SL in many ways? So he is still working for virutal reality, and even SL in a smaller but yet maybe better way? Maybe he was a greifer during beta and then ended up getting hornorary profile date kept because they gave him his profile back? He might also be evil. He could be a time traveller trying to kill your mother so you don't exist. I have no proof of that, and need to make food that may clog my arteries and think to myself...do I NEED it, but I want it and it is not so bad as many other thing. If I jog on the spot while watching over it will it cancel out? I mean, most likely not. But my economic and various other stats make me think I may die earlier than the 70-80 years I might expect to live, with my mental capabilities. Then I think, I don't want to be senile and it seems like there is no cure for that. So controllably killing myself is important to me, I can always stop if I don't like it...and start again if I need to. What better way than fried food, experimental recipes with strange cheese that may not work out but offers a slightly different taste. Besides, it is loade with fat anyway. The ingredients, some of them, may go off soon....wasting them is upsetting and eating the food will be happier of a solution to the problems of both living to long and regret over the food. You see, not all things are so simple. His leaving is not entirely a loss, and may actually turn out to be a benifit because there may be an awsome linden that gets into a posiiton to kick some bugs out. Sometimes better thinkers or more experience is not needed as much as simply a differen view or different mind working on the problem! All hail Newb LInden! I am sure whoever it turns out to be will not call hiself Newb, but I don't know who it will be. Maybe non, just sort of a way to avoid firing someone in the future so....yeah, sad. They should hire people, make more jobs and save the world through higher employment. Back to food, one of the few things I have control over...yet, even that....oh well.
  24. Animations don't allow the avatar to move far from a static point, but I think it is 10M out. This is good for sort of walking around in one spot and helps with wtirling and such. Yeah, vehicle physics can be used to enable an avatar to sit and then animations triggered, but you already seem to have gotten that response. But, to reduce lag the vehicles don't have to do the twirling and some basic motion within so many meters of the point, and I thought maybe this might be worth mentioning for anyone who may search for this response in the future. Vehicle physics cause some lag, so another tip is to restart the sim when things get bad and it seems to always lag. This is what tracks do, in fact looking at track sims like Racer's Island may help. They seem to restart (as do some others I have been to) the sim and it seems to help.
