  1. I guess networking is the fastest way to explain it. If you talk to enough people, keep your mind on problem solving and also make sure you learn about how SL works so you can see why the problems exist. Maybe gold solution progviders are still around, they do the "real" work with real world companies and get real world pay...not sure if they still have that program. But, yeah...if you learned about team managment you can crash study some project managment stuff and have a laugh at running a team....or be deathly afraid of upsetting people and being assertive and then realise you are a n00b and fail and stuff lol. I mean, if you can do it you may find many artists who are just looking for a job and that may work out when/if you find a market that has a need/problem. But, yeah, I can understand the "I just want a JOB. tell me what you want, I make it and you pay me money please." appproach. So, I can say look into the Gold Providers program...but I don't do that and basically all the below is the same. I like cars and autosports, so I make stuff for that. Do I see problems...more on that later...but also a note now and later...finding a market that will pay is paramount BUT the costs are so low you may wish to try it and see if a market developes a taste for it!! But, here are some things I noticed... a) win money (find an exploit in the browser/client/viewer used to mean an award....maybe. But I don't do this, don't know if it is stillaround but noticed it a few years back. b) Make a problem solver that is script based, that may include using an outside website via LSL's http in or out stuff. You can use google appspot and an example of a problem solver that is purely code based is the key2name work by some users. There is no function in LSL to input a name of an avatar and get thier UUID. So, you have solutions provided by online databases (more thourough, if done right) and also the solution using appspot. This is an example of what can be done. To see a product in use, you can see mailers/senders on the marketplace.secondlife.com site that mail or send things. If you know coding then you may find also the PHP stuff interesting, there are some tutorials (you may totally not need these) on the marketplace and I think a freee joomla integration script thingy that may show a few things that some people have done that is harder than many would wish to delve into. Server side stuff is not as common with SLer's that modify or do light scripting. It also takes some webside stuff to manage, appspot (or is that appengine or whatever?) so...yeah, this can be a bit to much for some but may show major problem solving power. You can also see theThird Party viewers and see that webside stuff is integrated in those viewers as well to offer extra services! c) make simple enough scripts that are easy to use by ameteur or non programmers. Examples of this are found on the wiki's library listings, or right here on the forums in the scripting library forum! d) Client hacking for extra features. I have seen a guy try to raise 20, 000 or so at a funding site...like kickstarter...or maybe it was that site! I think it failed. It focused on fixing and making changes to help the viewer code offered by LL as open source work well visually. Some loved it, but would/could not pay for it lol. I mean, the devil may be in the details on the offering and maybe it was wrong price points or it sort of didn't offer exactly enough features per dollar ect. Who knows. But, yeah, it can be hard to make money at this...well, or anything. e) Make some kind of hot product, make a team and lead that team with git/jira/insert fav group working thingy and basically hire people instead of looking for a job! This may be hard, but may actually be easier! f) learn all the stuff most coders in SL do NOT do and then either offer solutions to them or directly to clients that may do a little coding. I will mention an example, one I never talk about because I would like to do this but figure the market is not there...oh, yeah primarily you need to find a market or find someone who is tapping a market so well they will hire people and that means you would have to build a name for yourself as a coder, offer complex enough solutions that prove you can do the work and then work on methods to work with those indiiduals who come up with needs and are willing to pay up front...basically, you end up being a freelancer lol. But...uh, yeah...um, yeah...If I had more money than sense OR totally had the market figure out and was already getting some long slow method work done and needed the boost or the expansion I would have a design your own paint website. It would be allow people to drop vector based stripes, squares, triangle and basically primitive shapes down and then connect them. These are 2D, this is for custom paint for race cars or custom paint cars in the style of Formula D. I don't want to mess with cool street cars, but basically...formula D cars are very much similar and wuold suffice for some. I know others would maybe jump on this if the money was around for it, so basically after hiring you I would totally NOT want any contract that would cost so much as to block out all otheres from having their own BUT, I would want the code and rights to use it on a website as I see fit. I would offer others access to this via thier own sites and it would interact keep the basic images used and then they could offer the same...so you may not get as much work because my site would be cheaper for them to use and I would also be able to talk to thier modellers about how to set up the UV maps and make the art work used in the paint sites 'layers' ect. BUT, some do NOT want to dependent and want more control or whatever so you may even get more work on that. As you can see, standard freelancer stuff..right? So, I mean....if you need extra cash you might do better at freelance websites. g) Prove you know some stuff, prove you know by making examples and either selling them or making them for all to see. Then, let it be known to all you encounter that you are looking for a team. Carefully make sure you are joining a group or team that you can trust enough. Be mindful of legal implications, copyright laws and so on. This is the way they seem to be doing it, but I do NOT speak from experience. I have a different experience here and I also read a lot. You can read for yourself about Stilleto moody, Meeroo's programmer, the ameraretto and bunny whatever law suites and a few other issues (law suites against even Linden Labs!) and also keep in mind that I think that the biggest earners have been...uh, scripted items that are like meeroo and stilleto moody BUT above all....land barons! Land bots in teh old days, renting land and so on.
  2. I know many social network sites do this. If you say you love something you get it free. I read about a guy who buys free stuff with rebates. He makes money from selling those things lol. But, you will see all these people liking some guys blog and then read about how people just basically use MLM style systems to like each others 20 websites or whatever and make cross blog promotion stuff. Anything is amazing if it is from thier group or something...I don't know though, I haven't seen this. But I do see likes for sale, even blog postings. Any place you have crowdsourced labor seems to have this type of thing. It is sad, happens and people need money. I consider my business here honest, and consider the people who will pay for even a 1 star review to be more honest than the ones saying they only pay for 5 star. I mean, you will 5 star it to get your money back if you would normall 2 star it simply because it did some stuff it claimed.....so, how many 2 stars become 5? How many flat out decide to 1 star out of anger anyway? If the prices are low enough will they enrage competitors who will then buy the items only to star them badly? And do the ones who 5 star pay out only go to the more honest ones and buy thier stuff and 1 star it and laugh as they get the discount and it costs them fairly low price to damage (in thier eyes...why else would they pay people or give money back?) the competitors. Then, one day they will just remove the notice and many will think they are all just so good at this creation thing! What an amazing product it must be, right? Sad, and makes me figure demo's might be a good idea. This way customers get to try the stuff and see for themselves becaue I sort of figure that stars or no stars you are still not able to use the reviews to tell what to expect and not many review some items or show them. I have seen stuff rendered in a 3d program and NOT loaded into SL. These things sold well, the picture is better than what you get in SL I bet, but close enough. This is the odd stuff that is maybe not totally unethical, but seems to stray away from totally being ethical. Sadly, morals....well, who wants to debate. I will have to focus more on my own life, my own products and services in SL or otherwise and can't spend so much time worrying about how 'they' do it and whatever else I notice. I barely think abotu it, but it enters my mind....why, how and what is the effects over the next year or two...to RL issues to deal with to waste thought on this.
  3. Short answer is no, if you mean Avatars/characters animation. But you can animate textures (images, like jpgs...though many like higher quality bmp, png and tga (if you have clear/alpha parts) uploads because SL has auto conversion to thier jpg standard that has clear/alpha abilities and is compressed the way they like it to be then...YES, you canmake animated textures/sprites. YOu may even make a large flat 2d panel and make it trigger a animated sequence of frames placed on one image when you walk, jump or otherwise would be animated. You make your avatar invisable first, and then attache it with the scirpt. BUT, the programming (script) and invisablness are all stuff you need to learn because I can't explain it here. Plus, it may not look so great to you AND maybe you want to make aniamted objects? BUT, first....I am not sure you are allowed to sell a product with exported images/frames from that software and if any characters or objects provided to you with in the software are allowed. This is something you need to ask the makers of the software!! So, YES, you can make an animated set of frames from either exporting them or even printscreen capture a frame at a time and then working with them in Photoshop, gimp, paintshop pro or whatever other image program lets you put together images in rows and/or columns! You will need a script, a object to place the resulting texture and script into and then pateince to figure out any changes you need to make to the scirpt to get it to find your texture/imiage and get it to fit. YOu may find a script at the wiki.secondlife.com site in teh LSL script library. If it does not do what you want, you may find one at marketplace.secondlife.com or search around at script stores in world. There are script groups, the forums here, and maybe even teh texture forum might be of some help if you need something more detailed or enjoy scripting/programming a bit. Scripting/programming in LSL is not to hard, but can take a bit of time . For an animated textures...uh, it should be easy as several lines for most things. In fact, there is a link to an auto script maker website somewhere. Here is a link> http://www.3greeneggs.com/autoscript/ so....uh, yeah, it might help a bit to understand LSL and even give you a headstart on something. Like, lets say you want it to start and stop on click of the object...well, you would make a similar script and then replace the lines with the lines you find at teh wiki for animating textures. ANy trouble and you can get help with in world groups or here at the scripting forum. Complex objects may need more work though.
  4. I see that some people feel as if they should be banned. Which in turn means the only way to do this is to MAKE them a hasstle! Of course, she sells the scirpts and you can all buy them. This is marketing genius, but of course most who wish them gone do not wish to endure the trouble they cause for a time period...which makes this a safer marketing genius. I Beleive the issues of why they didn't sell more or make more has to do with not many people using the roads in the mainland and there being no reason to travel them but for the sake of driving. I have to admit, I many times wish to drive in a reasistic looking place and have used other software. SL has the distance, the oddities of stores and even peoples art to see....it doesn't work well enough! I am not aware of a game or world in which...ok, I DO know of one that is street racing oriented and bet more are to come, but either way....SL has a unique driving experience to offer if/when it finds a method to make a virtual world with sims NOT having sim crossings. Right now, we are told this will NOT happen. But, if all goes well and we have faster net and computers continue thier hardware increases, which is something that is not entirely covered by simple CPU speed as we know see 64bits and multiple CPU cores jumping in to make things quicker....but in decades from now it will all be working smoothly and with virutal reality headsets. BUT, having said that there are worlds starting right now for driving! So, this is a bit odd to ponder because SL has a uniqu element in that the mainland offers a place to have tonnes of roadside and easy to get to places all for those who want to wander around on a vehicle of some kind and enjoy the sort of neverending road trip sort of thing. Lots of bikers here, because you end up with bikers finding a place where you can ander around and hang out and look at, talk about bikes. Same for club goers and the music and outfits, same for ballroom dance fans and so on. It is far cheaper, far easier than organizing and doing this in RL. In fact, many things are so much easier than SL that I think this was why the fast part of fast easy fun was there. SL takes a bit of time, but nothing compared to the costs and time it takes to travel with gas prices the way they are. Nothing close to the cost of gettiing robbed by bad peeople you come across, or the costs of injury and so on or even drunk driving. So, people sit and get tipsey while they chat and listen to some jazz and dance or turn the lights off and watch the rave party on thier screen and maybe even get up and dance with the computer speakers maxed out.....it costs less, you can still have fun and it is so much quicker and easy to log off and crash before going to work tommorrow...no ex at the favorite hangout, no "where is the money you owe me" from the soon to be ex friend or whatever other problem is out there....no, I don't owe money lol....but yeah, maybe I do and forgot! But, yeah......it IS faster, easier and sort of fun enough...better than reading a forum post or answering grandmas wierd IM's now and then.....not that ALL the time SL is a better and RL stuff can be fun to, even grandma can be a riot to listen to and show freinds the funny things she buys or makes for you..I mean, sometimes for some people. Some like to drive around and check out weird stores, roadside oddities and art. Sometimes even see someones weird ride or rolling party/fight/deadlyiinteractions or whatever. Other uses for vehicle scripts, and maybe some of the newer tools for NPC come to mind as something people may like as well. Cars simply plow through zombies, so no biggie there. But, there are no roaming zombies....is this a sign SL is dying? NO zombie pools rezzing new foes to wonder around and find thier pray? I mean, you could even script them to avoid Ms Annes vehicles! No one? Wow, SL may be dying! lol. If anyone hears the message that she gets thousands of people looking at her profile and inundating it with messages then you can see that many also could see someones NPC sales company. I should shut up and start getting a vehicle made up to map out waypoints and be done with this rambling and just get into the violent monster breading business. Of course, they can't attack...but if you click it after it follows you AND you aggree to the pop down message AFTER you willingly (hopefully) clicked it....well, you agree to be attacked and hopefully can run fast or be quick to draw..right? But, alas, I have to many other things to worry about.....but still. A year and no creepy mythical creatures laying by the wayside or even in a dark cave peering out with glowing eyes ony to speak up and ask who dares disturb it? Zombies....none roaming the roads confusedly getting run over by annes cars? Oh well. I bet if this happened, and all the lag, blood rezzing and noise happened...well, we may see and end to it because it surely would end up adding up to some lag and would be simply seen as doing business on public linden land and the same rules for sandboxes would be in place...no sales, no advertising or whatever. But, ey...it would be crazy while it lasted and would not be too laggy to be outright greiffing and some n00bs lost wondering the mainland would find somethiing to do! Heck, why not even make characters to help or guide the wondering adventurous ones who didn't need to stinkin' help lol.
  5. VonGklugelstein Alter wrote: It is funny how good of an investigator you can become just by checking your own rankings periodically. You can see who is gaming the system but it does not matter because LL does not care because they make money on each sale regardless if it is fake or not. I know the name of every texture seller who cheats the system but the only recourse I would have is to start gaming the system too which for now I do not have the time to do. I love when reviewers say that the product they just bought is the best they have ever found and all other ones they tried are of bad quality.. and then find out the review was made on the "Born on date" of the purchaser. Other tags are when they use quotes like 10/10 stars and about 10 different reviewers use the same 10/10 reference. And yes.. I most likely outsell them by a lot and I do have some very good loyal customers who are the only reason why I haven't quit this mess yet. I am very tired of seeing these bottom feeders (and some Alts of big name merchants) trashing the economy with their tactics. I predicted that the marketplace will destroy SL and so far I am on track with my predictions. Inworld stores and honest creators are dropping like flies while shady character (more shady than me) are starting to dominate the economy.. Trust is out the door with me .. but I trust you ..lol You see, this is the wierd thing. I didn't want to really make a thread questioning reviews or talking about stuff like this...why? Because I figure people might think I was somehow trying to drum up people checking my products to either bash my products and say I am jelous (unlikely, but you never know who you anger by simply asking a question in this world) OR would simply be intrigued at this and check all the marketplace and then copy the same tactic lol. In fact, when I read your last line about trust it makes me think of how funny it is. For all I know, and we know, you are running and alt to see just how effective the pay or review system is! lol. Effectively, you then may build this alt up and continue to play innocent and even talk to your group about these terrible losers and even point a link to it...of course, the funny thing is that you then see how many customers you lose who may have not known of this other source of similar textures! Strangely, some may even laugh and figure you are the alt and then buy and end up IMing the other maker and start tracking YOU! Then, you are both tracking each other and trying to figure out each others motivations and triggers. One to make a sale, the other to find a odd merchant playing alt games to drum up business! In then end, in true spy vs spy fashion...something goes wrong and onen is hurt....maybe both....how, who knows. You end up logging into a trap or dating a alt of the person and they expose you both via some RL info with 2 alts dating or some oddity....still, no one cares to much but we here visiting the forums will will get the popcorn for the ensuingn arguments, outings and such. Then, a dog urinates on a dandelion and a bird distracts it and we are reminded....what was I doing again...wait, there is a dog peeing on my lawn...wait, why didn't I mow the lawn so there are no dandelions....they do look nice and I like to smell them though...wait, dogs pee on them......wait...am I still logged into SL forums? Ah, I have to go....I think something is burning....hhhhm......wait, don't I have to do something with a forum post or something.....*20 minutes later, 2 posts down and 1000 words wasted with a few more posts looking interesting* hey....wait, why didn't I mow the lawn.....I think I was trying to mow the lawn...right...uh...0_o hey...I know what, I wll finisha few posts reading and then go and think about some stuff as I mow....oh, I don't have to mow the lawn.....it's to early....maybe I should go smell the dandelions though! Yeah! Great idea, that was what I was going to do...smell the roses so to speak..I mean, dandelions! /me walks off to enjoy the aroma..."ugh!! wha the hell"
  6. Betty Briand wrote: I saw it being discussed here before.. think it was said that the whole thing is within tos. I am not sure if the ratings are part of the best selling math thing, if they are, it should not be allowed Yeah, I was asking about reviews once as well. I noticed that a few products had a solicitation notice and found out there is even a device for checking and then paying out...or maybe I figured there would be one made before long lol. Easy page parsing from a website and then send back confirmation to the owner or even automatically pay the clicker. Easy enough really, though managing it all with LSL's oddities might be a challange with a bit of customer service to do. But, seems like you qustion the reviews though. I mean, if you want the cash back or bonus you really feel as if you should give a nice star level, and then voice concerns with the positive stuff emphasised. So, why would you give it less than 3 stars? I mean, you can still voice your concerns because many know that you can learn things about the product that are not mentioned and see the details in a review. So...yeah, it is sort of a odd system that helps you look like your product is popular maybe? But surely people know many merchants have freinds? But, the whole question si why would they bother? So, I have a tendency to sort of use them a bit but also wonder to much to just use one product or one page. It makes me search more to get a feel for what is offered. I like to window shop a bit, plus it is a fast, easy (er) way to figure out what is up with the market.
  7. Wow, I have had more rides on those things than the average! I think I must have hopped on one at least 4 times. I have also crashed into them, I think. Do you record collisions and have a driving record on us all? lol ;P For some reason I keep thinking one of the tanks fired on me or I fired it....not sure though as It was a while back and well...you know, tanks blow stuff up....so I sort of expected it and then carried on with little memory of who made the vehicle.
  8. Maybe someone knows debug settings for cache, occlusion or texture loading? I know you can disable texures loading in the advanced or develope menu's. But, this means you see nothing much and the world is a smudged and grey looking place. But, I bet LL already thought of ways they can lag you (like loading tonnes of textures as fast as possible) but there is onething you might try. If your pc is slower you may want to turn down network speed. This most likely will not help, but it has helped me over and over to basically just walk and not worry about the grey slowely loading prims around me. If moving is priority, then hit crtl+p for preferences and then search in the settings for a slider that is for network speed. YOu can move around at around 200-400, usually, if you are on a slow connection with a slow PC. As far as what works for you, this is your pc and it's software load and the situation etc. Ok, that was the quick response. The rest is rambling on and sort of explains a bit of stuff about graphics...ok, it is rambling about graphics that might shed a bit of light on some things in the first sentence. SLow PC + cache loading and a glitch in occlusion is a guess I am making. I am not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but there is a graphics thingy that makes LESS lag under some circumstances that may cause lag for some rason (bug or maybe older hardware that is not supported) and it is something to do with occlusion. Uh, I can't tell you where to start with this because it is sort of a debug thing IF you can even change it's way of working. Another thing is texture loading. If there was textures loading (hey, maybe they are somehow putting tiny teeny little textures you can't visuall notice (black out the prim and the textures are thre, but not visable) and it loads like 10 HUGE 1024 textures at just enough seconds to keep your viewer trying to load them into memory. For this to work I would imagine you have a bug still because surely LL would have watched for this and made it not do bad stuff. But, if your network is fast enough and your hardware slow enough it may just be that a huge amount of junk goes from your cache and from your zippy net connection and it slams your PC's bus sytem. Hey, sounds used to be a complaint of some. They can be preloaded or triggered and if anyone remembers the greifer objects...yup, they used sounds BUT they didn't load many did they? Mostly I remember a zombie one and it was seemingly for fun because otherwise they would have loaded more different sounds. Most of the time though, stuff gets dropped and forgotten if you have issues. BUT slow PC+ lots of stuff occluded and just waiting when you turn around + fast net connections loading new stuff = lag. Maybe not 20 seconds, if all works as planned by LL. But you also must realise that older hardware is not recomended and you are supposed to have like at least a 6600 nvidia....yet they say older ATI cards are OK? weird. But, yeah....olders stuff is sort of not reccomended, but works anyway. Ironically many have experienced better support for nvidia, yet older ATI cards are supported that are older than nvidia ones. The 6600 is sort of hard to find but usually you see 7300 and so on. The odd thing is, in that series of numbering the second number seemed to have more to do with the gpu chips speed. So, technically a 6600 is faster than a 7300. But, the 7600 or 7800 is faster than a 6600 or a 5600. I think there are more like...uh, 5500 and 7300 around than 6600 but it may be a shader issue and support for other stuff...opengl and directx. Now, that is maybe where the first number means more. So, best bets is to use at least reccomended stuff, but on the lower end you end up with looking around at the 7xxxx range for nvidia, but ati seems to not matter as much. The 9850 or whatever they say is very very old! I think the 2600 and maybe 3600 are the more affordable and faster ones. But, if you PC is old you still have a slow system bus speed (ram and chips that shuffle stuff between your CPU chip and so on...which would be a single one) but I mean....there are also chipset issues. Some gaming specific motherboards are basically a huge amount of focus on graphics. So, you have all this stuff going on where there is not as much attention spent on sound or other system bus stuff. This helps to reduce bottle necks in the graphics pipelines, maybe even irks some because they complain about the IRQ this and that and priorities and blah blah stuff about I/o and bioses. I mean, basically graphics over all and you get the tiny lag removed or reduced. But this is like tiny or just a glitch type of thing. The lag with SL is more likely just everything trying ot keep up with each other. I uses networking, graphics, sound, harddrive (cache) and all this stuff.
  9. And, if you ask if they where a women they could easily say to themselves "World Only Man" and "Ah, they mean REAL world, since Sl is not a world but only virtually so" and then reply yes, as they scratch the hair on their flat y chromosone created chest? It is hard to talk to people, or bots, sometimes. The sadest day is when you are chatting with a bot and it gets tacken over by a person then you know the world is truly mad. BUT, maybe the OP was looking for peole to say "hey, you need to just go to like X side of SL or check out these places here" and then list a bunch of places, huh? Well, I remember seeing everything from churches and other non-profit groups to corporate sims that range from small magazine places with nothing much there to larger full sim areas. But, in some wayssome seem to not have to many things to do but serve as a place to chat or just ownder around and look. I turned up at a few in world classes or talks that had nothing to do with SL. One was a physics lecture...I left, voice only and I was not in the mood to listen to people talk. But, yeah....there was nanowrimo people meeting up (write a book in a month world wide event) and some other neat stuff that is not that weird! The events listings may lead you to something cool and if you find people you are cool with then you will get along with thier friends. This will lead to a small group that you can hang with and maybe even just chat and amuse each other with objects or gestures etc. I remember hearing about average SL usage and there are a lot people that never leave one area hardly ever! They log in, stay thre and just hang out and there are friends they know there and it's all good for them because they understand each others. Then, there is the main areas like help areas and welcome areas or sandboxes. You never know if you will get a dude silently working on something neat and you strike up a convo or if a crazy dude rezz's a church and throws fire bombs at it for a few minutes though! So, most go where they can handle it and say put, from what I read at a blog that was looking at SL usage stats or something that was said by a LL worker..nto sure.
  10. Did anything happen with this? Was the 'harrasment' stopped or any word from LL, if they could do anything?
  11. I heard land makes money. You can also see best sellers on the marketplace.secondlife.com site, the official marketplace of SL. But, keep in mind that the results are price weighted (well, tey used to be otherwise 0L$ items would rule) and that there are many who do not shop at the marketplace at all, but many do use it at the very least to see items and a bunch buy there. I can't help with specific catagories other than whatever is hip, new and trending seems to make it up...ok,not all things but some. Also, problem solving items appear there. Examples are obvious. Kissing animation and object that lets avatars kiss each other. That is popular seems to always be around the top hundred or so best sellers. Plus, avatar accessories becuase everyone has one! Uh, the people who started the big foot modelled into the shoe craze made a million dollars in sales! They work in a team and are serious about it. They charge a lot and where the original (I think) feet in the shoe people so they solved a problem, provided something avatar based and it was something peolple buy over and over and collect! Plus, they are visable and selectable, so others may see someone wearing them and then click on them and edit them to see the creators name, press profile and find the store! They basically half way advertise themselves lol. People must have asked about the feet and so on, so new tech may also be a good idea. But, yeah....I heard land is where you make the money. Not sure about what exactly, though I imagine there is books about this.
  12. Darkie Minotaur wrote: Actually, for the vwsearch it seems to be the case that you cannot call it from an LSL script anymore - the call will return an 403 error - which usually means "Access denied". If you call it from outside SL, it still works fine. Yeah, I wonder if they may do this on a IP by IP basis though. So, I dont' want to be all like "us this it is great!" and then people get into trouble! lol. But, yeah...a few times a minute for a few minute doesn't seem more thann you would do with by hand and copy and pasting, right? So, you may quickly learn a tiny bit of python, set it to not search to much and get by. But, then again....maybe they block all IP's from googles app service for all I know! lol. I just vaguely remember the tny vauge bits I learned about this, so sorry if I sound to noobish about it and am putting anyone off trying. If you mimic normal usage I doubt LL woud hate you and block you though...right?
  13. Python code for a server that runs on a google app cloud thingy was on the wiki here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Takat_Su/Name2Key The python code is supposed to drop right into Googles app offering and you set it up to run, it uses vwsearch and not a third party database. I don't think google charges unless you get heavy traffic, then they want some money. I also don't know if any competitors are around, though I imagine by this time there may be. The only alternative I can see, in the past, was to set up a site that runs PHP or python and then try to adapt it all to work for you. This solution with google seems the simplist, besides just buying one from an in world vendor. But, they most likely use one of the 3-4 that whee around. There was at least one more around...something fox? I dont' remember, but maybe the avatar or company who ran it had fox in the name. hhhm. There used to be third party viewers that would show UUID's, but the viewer changed and I am not sure because I haven't used so many of them nor looked for this feature. You may also find a way to use grease monkey, or some other webbrowser to code it up easily enough. I don't know, I looked at this stuff a long time ago and got a bit stuck on how to go about it and wondered if it would get blocked. Really, I would think this type of thing would be through an API. So, I don't know if demand would mean it went to that in the end. But, maybe I worry to much.

Yeah, she owns the rights to the image, she gave this copy to him for him to see. If he is using it wrong, I can't see why you wouldn't be right. BUT, the issue lies in that he can list it again and then she has to do it again, but within a year or whatever she is supposed to take him to court. This is where things get sticky and wierd. I am not sure the DMCA covers stuff other than money, I heard a lawyer here say (with the obvious caveat that she was no mine, and obviously not practicing at that point in time as one and was just talking about what happens) that the court can claim di minimus. THIS is the part I dont' want to mention, THIS is the part that is why I worry. People think I am letting a cat out of a bag here, if he is silly enough he can fight it in court and basically the OP may not wish to take it that far. Since he doesn't have your RL contact info you may not be able to get any kid of slander because you are not a publicly recognized person. I really don't like posting in these threads, the law is a strange subject but since I have had to read up on some things, and seen the whole DMCA fiasco chats here and read a tiny bit about SOPA etc....I truly feel like this is jsut because it is easy, it doesn't tax my mind so much to regurgitate some of it! BUT, I never used Kaza or Napster, I never argued with people in the streets protesting for what may or may not be fair usage.....this is not my bag, I prefer to keep my nose clean really. So, SL is an odd experience here. It is strange in that the stuff here is not effecting RL so much, but it still does a tiny bit....is it enough though? But, maybe the guy is right and we shouldn't feel sorry for you because you will tear our couches up, scratch the door up and might even poop, bark all night and insist on licking your butt to much!! lol?
  15. I think the issue of IM's is copy and paste, verbatim ect. If you say 'Bob says you are basically great' then you are NOT copying any of his text, so you are safe. I imagine it my be considered to be heresay on some level, but more or less it is a bit odd but there is a reason wiretapping is not allowed and it is basically to do with expecting privacy and so on. But, a person saying something that is thier own words...well, what can you do unless you have a NDA or some other legally binding agreement. Then you go after them for espionage or breach of contract and it gets ugly. I could be wrong, maybe they mean no gossip at all? I can't see how a persons own words would be stopped. But, this is a private company and you don't have freedom of speach in SL, as far as I understand it. You can be kicked out if they want to.
  16. They are shining their servers...or code...maybe both, maybe they do need to shine the servers because they are saying it is a big server upgrade and the old ones that may stick around could be dusty and would need to fit in...so, yeah. What will you ejoy more or enjoy at last when the lag is slayed? For me, it is obvious. I wlil not mention it least the spam label flies into peoples minds. But, yeah....physics will be better so all things physical will be more fun! This will most likely take a back seat to improving other things, but if all goes well physics engine stuff will get at least a bit more smoothness from what it already has gained without the spikes of oddity that may occur now and then. What will you enjoy more when/if the lag is slayed? If you don't beleive it can be, then what would you enjoy IF it where reduced significantly? Thanks for any responses. I see so much complaining (some of it is rather sad, the direct delivery thing is delayed again and again) so...yeah, it may be nice when all the work is done and there are less things to complain about or be upset with. For those eternal pessimists, you can still join in with a wish list!
  17. Is the vwsearch method allowed? I mean, if you put hundreds of names or even thousands via making in world devices wouldn't LL put a plug in it and stop your device or IP from accessing it? Not saying it would, should or must...just wondering. I don't wish to rock the boat or upset SL and such, or at least would not want to rely on it knowing that it may get stopped somehow, even if I and many others use it with a slow request as to not cause harm. Some don't know or figure it is simply got gobs of bandwidth, which it might have!! I just remember some forums have issues with search, and some websites are so slow with searching. So...yeah, it would be like to know what LL's take is on the usage. Nice to know and have some guidelines so as to not cause an upset.

A bit of a bottleneck to be sure but its not like there is any shortage of items for sale anyway so maybe its time to clamp down a little? Quality Control. I think that Linden Lab having an employee (or more likely a small dedicated team) looking at each creation pre-release & deciding if it is acceptable (examining & rejecting likely copyright infringements, extremely low quality items, items with broken scripts that don't work, etc etc) is the only solution to clean up Second Life. A professional solution I know. One that runs counter to their philosophy & goals... thus will never be implemented. :catsad: I'm one of the very few who would like to see standards raised much higher here. It's an unpopular opinion. Carry on. edit: to add IMHO and so on, I didn't mean to make it sound that i know Apples stratagy in any more special way than what I have read from others info, some of that even opinions and other bits from reading about Apple appstore via thier own communications! They focus on looks, I beleive, and many other things. This indicates to me a quality experience approach, not a way of checking if every texture or whatever was legally obtained. If anyone knows they do in fact require a copy of license info and source on all components, then I obviously will be able to go about saying that my opinion now includes that they DO put emphasis on legal issues. I am not saying Apple are bad either, on the contrary I am saying they really are not able to know and are not required to by law to get releases and license copies for all assets and asset components. Apple are more concerned about quality products and stopping malware, IMHO. They do sahre the same name with Apple Records, a famous label that used to be seen on Beatles records and so on. Not only that, but if you look at the marketplace for making games there are licenced games developed by smaller studios. In fact, one further is that smaller studios are hired to handle the making of many things and in major games you will see many companies mentioned, from fmod for sound to teh guys who did the modelling or even cut scenes. I am not an expert here though, I basically just read a bit about this and am intiuged by games and 3D art. So, yeah.....I have seen this and we all must have seen this. One company makes some bits, another makes others and so on and another company owns the rights or whatever. This is as far as I go with this, I don't know who has what or owns or gives perms on what. I am not interested in licensing as much as some, and do not own a company that makes 'triple A' games or whatever for distributors and larger game companies. But, yeah. YOu can see it in the credits at the beginning of even old school games! They start up and have some music, a video and some animated logo thingies for genius's at play or DICE or whatever else. So, you say the screening is for copyrights, but Apple are fanatical about controlling thier systems and want to keep a rep I bet. BUT, this is an opinion and I am nto saying they don't reject stuff or ask for scans or othe proof to put on file! It is a litle loser than what older game system owners had going on, as far as I know. Now, even the xbox is a bit different and loser with it's quality and standarsd, let alone checking who owns what. I remember a game a whlie back by a big RP company. They had used a game from another one, but put it into thier network. They end up with everything from disputes from companies wanting them to remove stuff that was replicas of thier products to dealing with sexual harrasmentesque complaints. They just worked thier way around it, with some attitude and basically they are sort of right on some issues. But, in the end they wheer treading on the toes of the company who they worked with even! They didn't just gracefully deal with things, they went out and would get back in peoples faces about it. They ended up in trouble for all the attitude they had about claiming to be the most right and so on, in the end, because it died. They had to pull the whole game off thier network/collection or whatever! Crazy stuff, and I am not saying they deserved it but they seemed to have a never ending fighting attitude, they never wanted to give up on some issues. But, they had to at some point and all the rest seem like hollow victories. They made more games, got more users and kept on carrying on. No biggy, just money....right?
  19. Who created the image? Maybe they can DMCA it, the photographer may still have the copyrights to it. If you took it, you can say he had rights to look at it personally but no rights to post it anywhere. But, Imean....I don't think that would work so well. But, I tell you it doesn't work well will you hack my computer because you feel as if you have been wronged and somehow blame me for pointing it out to others who may do the same and not get DMCA'd? It is hard to tell what happens with people and who is doing what, huh?
  20. the spy device are funny. It is illegal to spy on people in real ife, or something like that....some stuff abotu wiretapping laws and so on is wierd and has odd exclusions and so on. But, you have to get cought. If you are an informant and reviece part of a huge intellegence budget, AND you are part of a corporate entity....well, that organization has privacy laws and can destroy any documents needed to help you operate and they don't get cought. Ironically, you can then launder the tips via "hunches" or other things.....heck, you can even place "evidence" and get away with it....who says you employer even woud know that....i mean, the company employing you to find out about a person via watching your public interactions and so on basically could then squeel and attack the company who hires them. So, they both have an understanding about results and how bad the target is wanted dealt with and if it all seems OK....well, it can get nasty. But, we have NSA, CIA, satalites and the good people to look out for these fiends and would not allow it to happen. Thus, it doesn't....ever! The budget is used for cupcakes and candy canes for all to enjoy at these places....they are just addicted to sugar a bit to much! Right? Honey, sugar and so on....that why they fear getting trapped in honey pots...little tiny ones to small for thier big clumbsy fingers to protect themselves from....then they wont be able to pick their ears. If they don't pick thier ears, they will get filled with wax and be unable to hear! So, they basically are unable to complete thier work at some times...but the muffins are always in the lobby, so it's all good and they get away with a certain amount...especially if they try to destroy the suspected honey pots....even if they have no honey, don't resemble a pot or otherwise...it just depends how bad they want to keep on going. Maybe they want to get cought though? Maybe they feel it was worth it, becuase....people shouldn't make those pots so even if a honey pot is not one it can be an example to other honey pots to not exist or hide! This is important stuff, right?
  21. Melita Magic wrote: I'm referring to keeping people in world, though. People who like to build and to create but find outside programs too isolating, too expensive, or too fiddly. I'm not talking about finding places to live. I'm not sure that the Linden Homes were a resounding success in retention of new users. I don't really know, though. I'm talking about people who have made it past the initial learning curve, and want to stay. But who want to do more than shop and wander. Who are creative but not necessarily highly social. But who might prefer being in SL and creating, at least part of the time, or as an option, vs. sitting disconnected completely, on their computer, and trying to learn Blender (for instance.) Rather, trying to teach themselves to use it. I think if there were in world building tools that were intuitive to use, WYSIWYG, sort of, (have you built a house in The Sims game? Their create a person thing is not good, though) concurrency or whatever it's called might go up. People would enjoy creating again. The prim belongs to the past in my opinion. Time for a bit more. Building is in world is something that I feel is good for some people, I really do. But, I was simply saying people can sort of build with mesh outside and with something easier than belnder, but maybe just use blender or something to convert stuff. I think the in world building tools are good. And for collaboration, in world is good to. But, I assume you mean this tool would only be used by one at a time. Meaning most would be alone in building. Technically, with prims many can make parts if they are int esame group. Of course, who owns it...this gets interesting when it comes to packing it up. But, if there is understanding...well, prims are easy to sort of deal with for group building. But, yes....prims are something that streams well for 2003-2004 and helped to build this place...but, yeah to many triangles and no control. Newer tools could be built, and even offline building could occur (some of use either have or may get bandwidth restrictions lol so..yeah, thi is a nice option!) and the build tools in SL are really pretty good, considering. They are easy to grasp and also provide a tiny bit of simplicity while keeping things flowing nicely. they may be able to pull something that works well with what they have with priims as well. And, to the other replyer, as far as a ring or a whatever I assume it would be a teleporter prim that moves them from one persons sim to another, of course I assume group can allow this. But, maybe both sims need to have the same owner in order for the teleport on collide to work?
  22. I use blender, and have played with rigging a bit. I have not heard of this method where you can play an animation and it would be the same, but on all fours. There is one way that is sort of similar to what you describe, and that would be offsetting the character while leaving tha actual rig/bones in place as a normal avatar. But, wouldn't there be some issues with the angles and the moves would not really be close but the animal would not move from all fours exactly...but, I mean, it would look odd if using human based animations becuase you are sort of using the rig like a puppeteer of the character...I can't see this working well but have not done this, so I can't say it wont work. Sorry, I can't be of more help. I assume someone will know this much better and arrive soon enough (Gaiaa? oh I spelled that wrong...anyway. Yeah.)
  23. I can see the tools being used to help connect up sim owners who want to make a game tha spans multiple sims, or even some other kind of thing (hunts, right?) that allows them to cooperate. But, are there enough sim owners to make this work? Maybe land lords, real estate peoples who won sims might be able to make/buy something nifty for thier renters (commercial or residential) in some way? LIke, a game that lets wondering shoppers explore the stores and hunt for things? Maybe a shopping HUD that allows them discounts if they buy something from one store or visit a booth and listen to a pitch?> Like, a discount HUD. You shop at one place and a vender plug-in records that you purchased something, so you get a discount at another place via the HUD and a plugin. Or it sends you a gift card? Sort of lets store owners group up and the sim owner gets a little more traffic from people sticking at the sim to see if they want to use the gift card at this time or not. Stuff like that.
  24. Melita Magic wrote: I would love to see more in world building tools. Ones with intuitive interfaces. That would bring more people in world and keep them there a while. They brought in the creator of The Sims, but where is a way to build a house that's as easy and intuitive as it is in that game? For example. I would argue that one could use a 3D home builder software and export it (if avialable, which some do have) and viola...collada import covers a lot of this type of thing. Plus, SL is a sort of place where people sellthings and there is not really a need for a home. Plus, it is not simulated human life. You can prim up your avatar and be different, so there was not much use in this. But,you do have a point about the majority of residents signing up, that is why LL made the linden homes thingy! So, maybe they should have made a builder that simply adhered to a style and gives you options of home textures and so on that match with the neighbourhood. You get to choose something and it also makes the place look a little less planned. But, aren't those homes to help peole get started and if they alll look simlar then who cares...people are used thos this even in real life! You see planned communities with houses all the same, they flip the blueprints over and reverse the floor plan to add variation lol.
  25. Editorial usage, freedom of press is the grey area. Here is a great example. A statue made (that had to do with 9/11) was made. It was based on a photograph, composed rather closely to the way the people where posed and what they where doing. The statue make ends up in a bit of trouble. Why? The photographer sold the rights to use that photo in an article, whie he was covered (and the paper, becasue they bought his composition) from say...uh, trademark issues if any logo's where seen on a persons clothing, the overall composition was owned by the photographer (or the agency he did the work for) so...well, the statue people claim it is a public historical event (in reailty, they sort of may have coriographed the whole scene though!) so they where OK in doing this, they where covered by freedom of press. The usage was editorial, or at least they beleive a public happening and visable by all and they made a statue NOT a 2d image that copied the image. So, they where not taking anything away. The guy claims they would have to pay him rights to use that composition, he made it (or his agency who owned the rights owned it) so they took money away from him. Strange stuff. I don't know what happened, but both had lawyers and both beleived they where right. I don't know who was right. They may have not been there, but there are witnesses that where and the image was used NOT as a commercial offering but to tell news. If the press are protected because it si for public good, then the information is then transfered to the public for their own selfs. If you see something and make a item of it...well, it is very interesting how close it is. In this case, maybe the statue copied to many folds and wrinkles, the arms where at the exact angle and so on. They need to pick a different second in time for this image, maybe that was all. If they have of asked, they might have gotten a lawyer and he might have said to just make it different. But, after they are allready under attack they needed a different lawyer, one who had a history of fighting this stuff and who had a different view. The law is slightly...flexible. It seems to flex a bit, and there are so many specifics. But in the above case, the Original Post, we see that the user had taken an image of her item and was even distributing it with a package and so on. Maybe something was unclear, I dont' know. But, because this was an issue we see new wiki page entries! This is the sort of reason you see two lawyer face off, you see never endinig battles with copyrights from the inception of copyright laws that where trying to stop authors from wanting to quit distributing and all the greater good arguments of sharing information and using books instead of apprenticeships and guilds with limited membership. This is not easy stuff to udnerstand when you see what happens, but there are norms and that is why I mention the TOS violation may exist...I am not looking it all up though, I just don't have time. I can quickly type this off the top of my head, so no biggy. Anyway, we all seem to have food and shelter so we should be happy at least for that and I will most likely stop posting in this thread.
