  1. The SL viewer is still pretty complicated to noobs. Now and then I try to explain how it all works to friends, not easy. Easier then it used to be but still quite complicated for total noobs. I would also love to show elderly people around my sim, people who are not very experienced with modern computer technology and so on. I'd explode with delight if we get a viewer that would be good enough to install in a old peoples home and they could actually use it. Besides, I have found that the phoenix viewer is a great viewer with lots of options superb for us builders.
  2. I am still figuring out SL options and I am a 2 year old builder and manager of a sim! Besides, the idea is not to replace the viwer with a basic one, the idea is that new visitors get a basic easy to understand "viewer for dummies" to get them going. Personally I never really cared about my skin and didn't start building till after a week or so. I know people who never build anything but still have a lot of fun in SL. If you're a new member in SL who immediately wants to do someting complicated like tweak their skin, then they can skip the basic starter viewer and move on to the more advanced one.
  3. I've suggested this several times, glad to see it happen. SL viewers can be difficult for new users, things can be confusing. People who just want to have a look around to see if it is any good sometimes give up very early. Just the other day a friend tried SL and I tried to guide him trough things. It took us ages for him to actually see anything as he was on a slow connection and had to manually turn down all his settings, show him how to work the camera, teleport, etc, etc. The first viewer everyone automatically downloads should just be for walking, exploring and chatting. Like what you see in SL? Move on to the normal viewer.
  4. Hahahaha! Odly enough 1920s Berlin has had a certain attraction to dr Who(s) and friends for a while. Coincidence that dr Who is going to be a gay writer in 1920s Berlin on the BBC this friday? http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv/comingup/christopher-and-his-kind/ Our priest used to enjoy rezzing priests in his basement, but unfortunately in public its not allowed. BUT if enough dr Who's ask us, we will gladly organise a Dr Who day at Berlin some time. We also have Relaxed Rules day soon when everyone is welcome in modern outfits, as furry, etc. So Dr Who, police phone boxes and daleks are welcome to visit us that day. AND if you want permission to ignore our dress code for a photo shoot or to make a video, just ask.
  5. Shame. A super duper basic viewer that just allowed you to walk around and chat in a brower would be great and a sollution for people who just want to look around before deciding to download everything and get dug in. When I first mentioned the brower version on my facebook a few dozen friends were interested to come see my sim, all of these have tried and given up, can't be bothered to try the official viewer or simply have computers that can't handle SL.
  6. I think that it had some potential, a very basic viewer that allowed people to just have a look. There are many people (some elderly and not very computer oriented) who I would love to show around a few places but it can be horrendous to explain SL to friends. Often I try and get people to join SL but it takes a lot of effort and many are not keen on that.
  7. I remember this being announced months ago; play SL in an internet browser. I tried several times but was never selected to give it a go. Now I am wondering if this project is still going ahead, can we try it somewhere, will it go official soon? Any news? Just like bigger prim sizes and mesh it sometimes seems that something is announced and then almost forgotten.
  8. Are there any musicians out there that play pre 1950s music? There are a lot of vintage sims but not many good performers.
  9. In the olden days you could also use Live Chat support and they actually knew a few things and if things were really bad they would send a Linden to fix stuff on the spot. We still pay for being premium members but no longer get premium support. I once waited for over half a year for a ticket to be even opened.... SL needs a "Flying Squad", a team of people who can quickly check out stuff and sort it on the spot. Maybe surrogate Lindens who have manager powers in SL, but not full LL powers. For instance, once we had a giant cube rezzed in our sim with a big swastika on it. LL generally get very annoyed about that sort of thing but I guess they were busy as we had to wait several days for it to be removed. All in all this caused us and LL a lot of time and effort. We send AR's, had several live support chats, etc, etc. But it all could have been solved in seconds. "Hello live chat support, we have a big nazi cube in our sim." "I'll send in the flying squad." "Hello flying squad officer, look there is the cube!" "Oh dear! I've removed it and we will ban the griefer" "Thanks bye!" This is about 2% of the total amount of communication we actually needed to get it sorted. So many of the complaints and problems in SL are basic and can be easily sorted out without long chats, communication, AR's, etc, etc. If just someone could come and take a look. They need more people to work on this, maybe they should look into finding volunteers if they can't/won't afford it. I'd gladly volunteer a few hours now and then on "griefer patrol" or just helping new people out with any problems they may have.
  10. The 1920s Berlin Project on a foggy day On the right Station Berlin Alexanderplatz and on the left at the end the only (as far as I know) scale 1:1 replica of the brandenburger gate, crowning the famous Unter den Linden street. Avoid the backstreets, they are smelly, people with ill repute everywhere. http://slurl.com/secondlife/1920s%20Berlin/237/232/751
  11. Once a Linden came to my sim to solve a problem, I waved both my arms, jumped up and down and asked if he wanted to marry me. He ran away. I guess subtle is the way forward. Mind you these days I'd be glad just to know a Linden, even remotely. Just in case something goes horribly wrong, knowing a Linden may help me avoid waiting half a year for a ticket to be opened...
  12. Lovely idea. We had a tv show like that some time ago, presenter just got a big red marker, drew a straight line on a map and tried to follow it, going trough houses, crossing rivers, etc, etc. It is amazing what you discover by just knocking on peoples doors asking if you can walk torugh their homes
  13. Thanks! The Conover thing looks good and I'll also keep looking for some alt server thingy.
  14. Hahahaha, they are playing with marbles but somehow they fell off the snapshot.
  15. In my experience the 'customer' is very often wrong. People visit the sim, they get all the rules, notecards, warnings, etc. But they are not patient enough to wait for warning signs to rez, to read the rules, etc. They just run in and then get upset if you even dare contact them about the sims actually having rules.
  16. In onze sim zitten ongeveer 3 Nederlanders, waarvan ik (de bouwer en eigenaar) er dus eentje ben. Verder zijn er ook wel Nederlandse thema sims geloof ik, maar daar ben ik niet geweest.
  17. Our roleplay sim is suitable for both kind of children, avatar and RL, although of course real kids under 16 are not allowed in SL. We are a 1920s city, people live here, daily life goes on. We have a school, streets to explore, a park, station with train that goes around the sim, etc, etc. Just daily life from a time when kids ruled the streets. As long as you dont cam into other peoples houses or into that backroom of the bookshop, you will not be confronted with adult material. Besides avoiding adult material, kids are welcome to roleplay in our sim as long as they act realistically like kids. Walk around, play in the street, sneak into the cinema, go to school, have adventures with friends, break into that old burned house, buy candy, etc, etc.
  18. Peewee, I'll have a look for a mac alt software thingy. Valerie, I LOVE Oriolus his stuff, he is one of the best builders in SL and am proud to have his shop in my sim. But I don't see how his lovely parrot can tell me who is in my sim when I am not in SL.
  19. I'd give up nothing. I expect LL to keep an eye on the forums AND SL 24 hours a day. I got a premium account because of a few reasons, live chat service was one of those reasons. I still pay for that but as an European I don't get service for most of the day. Lovely... especially when you have emergencies during busy events. You're just ignored. And now we need to start paying to get spam free forums? I expect a spam free forum! I am a member of totally free, much less fancy forums, they found a way to keep spam out, LL should figure it out...
  20. Gay? Wha'ts wrong with gay? It just means happy. Or is that just in the 1920s?
  21. Treat SL like RL, if you find a place with open doors, no security, you're probably welcome to explore. If doors are closed and you need to go inside by bypassing doors or if there is security, keep walking. In our sim we try to be as realistic as possible, we have a city, we have roleplay, we have police. If you enter a home (all doors of private residences are locked) you can receive a IM asking you not to do so, but if you're unlucky you get a scary big 1920s Police man shouting at you and locking you up for tresspassing
  22. I was wondering if there was something that will allow me to see who is visiting my sim when I am not in SL. A sim/region wide scanner that can make a quick scan of all the people in a sim and put it online somewhere. Of course we have welcome mats that send IM's/emails to you when someone enters the sim, but some people teleport in with old LM's and sometimes you just want to know if there is a little party (or problem) going on while you're not there.
  23. At a Comic Relief sim? Is there one? If there isn't, there should be. And hopefully after seeing the excellent drama on the BBC with Dr Who (Matt Smith) as writer Christopher Isherwood in 1920s-1930s Berlin hopefully a few Brits will pop over to our Berlin sim http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ztfl9
  24. I know and griefers rarely bother me, usually they mildly entertain me with their sad behaviour. But the problem is that I run a sim so I am responsible for the entertainment and enjoyment of all tenants, visitors, etc. I can send messages and notecards to everyone and every new visitor to ignore the huge kube with swastikas in the middle of the sim (per example) but I see it as my duty to try and solve the problem asap and would expect LL to act a bit faster. Perhaps they should create a flying squad for emergencies, I am sure 80% of tickets and AR's can be handled within a day or so, but some need immediate attention. Not that long ago we had a tour for Unesco in our sim, President Obama was rumoured to be one of the participants. Imagine thge damage a griefer could have done there? Not just to our sim but to the general reputation of LL. But Live Chat is now unavailable most of the day, tickets tage ages to look at, etc. Maybe region owners should have an emergency contact line or something, to proper Lindens.
