  1. Building and time travel are why I am here. Being able to virtually visit the past. Something rather tricky in RL. I don't care for (modern) music, dancing, shopping, chatting, hanky panky, etc. It is nice that I meet some great people who share my interest, it is great to make friends and be part of a virtual community. But that is not why I came here, it is a by-product.
  2. Hope I understood the subject of this topic. My story, part of it anyway. I've always been in love with history. As a little girl I found some old photos and asked my parents why on these strange black and white photos everyone and everything looked so much nicer and was told how time goes on and the world changed. I cried because I was upset that everything had gotten uglier.... well it was the 1970s, so EVERYTHING was very very ugly My interest in the past never left, I always kept looking around me wondering how things used to look, how life used to be. My family history is very very interesting and I live in a very old city. History is everywhere. I always wanted to travel back in time, I dream about time travel. I've had a pretty good life, lots of friends, did ok at school, but never really fell in love with my own era. The music and fashion my friends were obsessed with just didn't interest me very much. I've never felt at home in the time I grew up in. So eventually I decided to go retro big time and now have a vintage lifestyle. So, one day I tried SL, just out of curiosity. Being very old fashioned you can perhaps imagine I didn't see much I liked, modern music everywhere, lots of naked pixels and hanky panky, etc, etc. So I left soon after. A few years later I was given a sexy new macbook and to see what my new computer could do I tried SL again, just because I remembered it demanded a lot from a computer. SL worked fine on my new computer and seconds before leaving SL again I decided to try looking for something vintage in search. I discovered the vintage lifestyle and was hooked. Weeks later I started the 1920s Berlin project, without any building or sim managing experience whatsoever. So now I finally have my time travel machine, not perfect, not real... but a close as I can get it at the moment
  3. For those who don't know; Keep Calm and Carry On was the third in a series of World War 2 posters drawn up by the UK Ministry of Information in order to boost the morale of the British people by passing on a message from King George VI. The posters were a stark white text on a red background, with the only image on the poster being the royal crown of George VI. The first two posters, "Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will Bring Us Victory" and "Freedom is in Peril" were widely printed and distributed. However, the third poster, which carried the simple message "Keep Calm and Carry On" although printed, was never distributed, as it was intended only if invasion was imminent. And yes, you can make your own; http://www.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk
  4. Tried a total re-install of SL? Of going back to a previous version of the viewer or a third party viewer?
  5. I only bought a black cat, it reminded me of one I used to have in RL. I simply 'parked' it by the fireplace in my bar and there it sleeps, 24/7. Lazy good for nothing cat, big failure when it comes to catching rats. But I love it. It just sleeps there, moves a little, makes a few sounds. Never needed any feeding or any extra spending. It was not cheap to buy, but worth it.
  6. I just imposed that opinion on you I have a reputation? Yes I know about the RAF I'm a Historic consultant, dated flyboys and have seen QI Did you know about vikings not having horns on their helmets? Oh history, best subject ever
  7. Being a liar, cheater and having affairs IS wrong. And yes, I can and will impose my morality on everyone. But you don't have to listen to me If everyone did as I told them to all men would have short hair, wear 1930s suits, fly spitfires and say "Ding Dong, I say, rather, tally-ho" a lot. PS I met Sir Hopkins once, and I would not at all be surprised if he indeed is a cannibal.
  8. To me SL is not about avatars but about the possibities to create, do and explore everything our imagination can make up. I think we need a name that shows that, the idea of "sl is what YOU make it", but avoiding "second life" because to outsiders that sounds a bit like it takes over your life and they always say something "funny" like "one life is enough". 9. Well said leliel Mirihi, couldn't agree more. If we all had had a much more realistic and better avatar creator and basic avatars with realistic heights, SL would be a different world today. Houses, furntiture and bojects would be a much more realistic scale and not only would there be sims and a market for tinies, there would also be one for the giants. Right now everyone is sort of stuck in limbo. LUCKILY this has been changing a bit lately, at least it seems that way. When I first came to SL I was a dwarf amongst giants, now I see more and more avatars my size and more sims with the realistic size.
  10. What I usually do is set my viewing distance to minimal, about 24 meters. This gives your computer less textures to load and most of the time you don't need to see much more then that. You can also set the avatars you load to a minimal. Then once everything around you has loaded you can change these settings back.
  11. Right now I'd be extremely happy with just being able to have a bot set the sim to midnight or noon now and then, adding details is extra
  12. Generally it doesn't matter what time it is in a sim, but when you run a Historical Roleplay sim based on a real city and real past, it can be very handy and part of the experience. We have our daily happy hour at a night club at 11 at night... in RL. That is 2 pm in SL and if you don't live in Europe you may mistake our bar happy hour with tea time. Also for roleplay it can be important to know you're walking around a city at midnight, especially in the bad side of town In may we are re-enacting a historical events; riots. There will be a cerfew, streets will be blocked off, police armed. All based on RL events. Then too, it will be handy for visitors to know what time of day it is there. When you want realism, having a real time of day is just another little detail. Personally I'd love to visit a sim and realise it is midnight in that part of the world now while it is day where I am in RL.
  13. It is insane that they make this what seems to be, or should be so basic, so difficult for us. Maybe something like a scripted bot that changes the time now and then, it seems that is the only solution so far. Lets hope one day a Linden notices us wondering about this and realises how easy it would be to make this a handy SL option we could actually use!
  14. I can't believe SL is making this so difficult for us. Well, I can. Anyway, it does seem like this is the only way. I'll look into it.
  15. I dont think it has anything to do with how much land you own. My sales have not changed and I've bought plenty of land. You may have accidently copied the keywords and description from the new land when you added it to your old land. Check the description of your land. Another possibility is that the old land had a shop that attracted a lot of customers who visited your shop as well but now visit wherever the shop moved to.
  16. I asked this before on the old fora but I thought I'd migrate it to the new forum as well. I run a roleplay sim, 1920s Berlin. Here I would like to have the sim the same time as RL Berlin, not the clock time but the time of day. So when it is midnight in RL Berlin I want it to be dark in SL Berlin and when the sun goes up in RL Berlin I want it to do so in SL Berlin. I can't believe it is so difficult to set this for a sim in SL. You either follow official SL settings or you have to go online and manually set the sim to day or night! Or is there an automatic way?
  17. As far as I know there is NO way to completely convince someone you don't have another avatar. Maybe SL is willing to send you a list of your alts, but they won't send one to someone else. And if they send one to you, how does your 'husband' know you didn't alter it before sending it on? Besides how does SL even know you don't have another computer with another account using another IP number and email address? NOBODY but you knows how many people you are in SL. So educate him and tell him to trust you or tell him to pack his bags.
  18. I've only made a few small changes. I pretty soon decided to make my avatar as much like RL me as possible. So when I discovered my avatar was 384785 feet tall (ish) I changed her into being 6ft tall like RL me and gave her a realistic shape. Within days of entering SL I found a pretty freebie skin that was vintage and thus suited me, I found 1930s hair just like the style I have in RL and have been wearing 1920s-1930s clothes since then. In the 2 years I've been in SL I've almost never changed my avatar, rarely change my clothes! The only thing I want to improve now is my skin. There just aren't many 38 year old woman who doesn't wear makeup, who has lived and doesn't mind her face showing that, skins in SL. You either get a 23 year old face or a 83 year old face. So in short, my avatar made just a few changes in a long time.
  19. Single is not a bad thing in SL OR RL. I've never had a partner in SL, I'm just not into that kind of thing. I'm here for something a LOT more interesting then relationships, love, hanky panky or holding hands... History! Yay!
