  1. Do you have a viewer that is Server Side Appearance (Baking) compatible? This is something new in July, which only the newest viewers can handle. Old viewers will see failed skins on all avatars, and others will also see you with a failed skin, if you on a Sim that is running SSA and your viewer is not SSA ready. See: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/It-s-Time-to-Update-Your-Viewer/ba-p/2067673
  2. I see 24 mainland parcels for auction on this page: http://usd.auctions.secondlife.com/lin/auction/auction/list/ (This is the linden dollar auction for parcels less than a full region in size.)
  3. Me menu --> Toolbar Buttons , then from the pop-up drag the button you want to the place you want it to stay at (bottom, left side or right side).
  4. There used to be a way, using invisiprims, but invisiprims don't work if you have advanced graphical settings turned on. More and more people do have advanced graphics on. That is why most avatars wear alpha layers now when they need to hide avatar feet (inside shoes). The old invisiprim shoes don't work well anymore. Alpha always works for avatars, but does not work on Linden water. Maybe you can just raise the house up on a sculpty hill?
  5. Unless there has been a security failure, attachments and rezed objects can not drain your Lindens without your permission. This means the object can't do it unless you give permission by clicking yes on a popup. Never click Yes on the pop-up that asks permission for an object to debit (unlimited $L) your account, except in a few cases: You are a dancer, and your tip jar must split all your tips with the club owner. You are a land lord, and your rent boxes must be able to give refunds to your tenants. Even in those cases, be sure the tip jar or rent box is scripted by someone you really can trust. I don't know much about objects messing with your inventory, but I don't think it is possible. Viewer software is completely different. Viewer software can do anything with your inventory. So only use trustworthy viewer software. Don't be tricked into using "hacked" griefing viewer software.
  6. With relatively limited main and video card memory 300 m draw distance is probably too much. Try 90 - 100 m. You should also set the viewer's texture memory to somewhat less than the actual size of the video memory on the video card. The idea is you never want to use up all the physical (on chip) memory on either the main board or the video card. If you do use up all the physical chip memory, the operating system begins to "swap" content between the memory chips and the hard disk. The hard disk is typically a lot slower than the memory chips.
  7. There were some changes in how buying lindens works over the last few months. Most debit cards do not work. PayPal usually works if verified and linked to a credit card. Also, PayPal may work linked to a bank account if you keep enough US Dollars inside PayPal (it has to be US Dollars). See the Billing page for advice: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Billing/ta-p/700037 If none of those options allow you to buy Lindens, you can buy Lindens from one of the authorized Linden resellers: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Linden_Dollar_(L$)_Authorized_Reseller_Program The authorized resellers often accept many different payment methods. In many cases they will accept additional payment methods that Linden Lab will not accept.
  8. If you can log into Second Life with your viewer, then you have access to your account. If you can't see your avatar, your camera may be pointing the wrong way (try pressing ESC several times) or your avatar may not be rezzing (this is called "Bake Fail"). Usually, you look like a cloud when bake fails. If that is the case, read the following: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail All your folders should be in your inventory. Log in, then click the Inventory button on your viewer (or press Control i ). It takes time to load inventory, so all your inventory may not appear right away.
  9. 1. The Lindens do not answer here, this is a resident to resident forum. You must have a premium account to get a Linden house, so that means you can use Live Chat to get Linden help, or file a help ticket. https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-contact-customer-support/ta-p/739385 2. Be sure you are in the right house.
  10. The numbering of video cards is very confusing. Two good places to look for advice, ratings, and reviews are tomshardware.com and videocardbenchmark.net
  11. There are some special areas with "double prim" parcels. These support twice the normal number of prims for the same size land. These area tend to be very expensive. I think you can find double prim parcels on the mainland in parts of Nova Albion, Bay City, Nautilus, and Zindra, plus also on some private estates.
  12. Your volume is too high. There are likely several different volume adjustments that affect it. Try looking in the web cam software.
  13. From what I have read, any viewer that can render mesh requires SSE2 . See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sse2 and http://secondlife.com/support/system-requirements/ for a description of SSE2 and a list of CPU chips that support it.. If you do not have a computer with SSE2, I think your only option is a non-graphical viewer, like Radegast or METABolt.
  14. If you have a premium account, check out Racer's Gulch which is actually four dry desert sims with off road trails. It is Linden owned land made for off road vehicles.
  15. You must give your true date of birth when you make an account. But even if you are over 18, you must still set both the viewer and the market place to see moderate or adult content. Both default to general only. While logged into the viewer, Me --> Preferences --> General tab --> select maturity rating. You can only change the marketplace setting after you log into the marketplace web site.
  16. Ask you fiber optic internet service if you have 'always-on' internet. I know of one case where the fiber was set up by the technician as 'On-Demand' internet, meaning the internet goes off if you are idle for too long. Other games may work differently, they may transmit data even when you are not doing anything, if so they would not be affected.
  17. To buy mainland parcels, you must have a premium account. The premium account fee is US $ 9.95 / month or else $22.50 / quarter or else $ 72 per year. The premium account includes 512 m of tier at no extra charge. So once you have a premium account, you can buy up to 512 m of land at auction (or in world if the land is for direct sale) and pay only the initial purchase plus your premium account fee. If you buy more land than 512 m you will have to pay an additional monthy maintance fee (called tier). Premium accounts have some other benifits, such as access to premium sandboxes, premium wilderness, access to live chat help, and ability to file a wider range of help tickets than a basic account can. You do not need a premium account if you are renting land from a landlord (another resident). In that case, you would pay rent to the other resident every week. The main advantage of renting is the landlord usually maintains a theme. Most rentals are on private islands, although there are some mainland landlords who rent parcels. See: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Accounts-overview/ta-p/700019 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Premium-membership/ta-p/1054477 http://secondlife.com/land/pricing.php https://secondlife.com/my/account/membership.php?
  18. There is something wrong with the official Second Life viewer 3.5.2. It is something that only affects new accounts. Linden Lab removed viewer 3.5.2 from the download page and replaced it with the older viewer 3.5.1. If you are having trouble with a new account and you are using viewer 3.5.2 uninstall that viewer, and download the 3.5.1 viewer from http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/?lang=en-US and install it.
  19. Maybe you are wearing a bad move lock or a bad animation overrider (AO)? Try switching back to a Linden default avatar outfit, removing all scripted attachments including all HUDs. Check the Current Outfit folder to see what you are wearing.
  20. Flycam works very well with the Logitech Attack 3 joystick once it is set up correctly. You can still buy the Attack 3 on Ebay or Amazon. Don't pay more than $30. This is my setup for this joystick: Joystick – Enable Check – Logitech Attack 3 Joystick Joystick – 3D Uncheck Joystick – Both Avatar & FlyCam Checked, possibly only check FlyCam if that is all you want. Joystick X = Sliding sideways is disabled with -1 mapping. Joystick Y = Helicoptering straight up and down is disabled with -1 mapping. Joystick Z = Axis 2 moving forward (engine) scale 3.00 when flying, dead zone 0.15 for both flying and avatar. Joystick Pitch = Axis 1 Joystick Yaw = Axis 0 Joystick Roll = -1 disabled. Joystick Zoom = -1 disabled.
  21. Upgrading to a premium account gives you the right to hold up to 512m of land without any additional fees (beyond the normal premium account fee). It does not actually give you a house or any land. If you want the house, you have to go to the web site and apply for the Linden house (the supply is limited, you may not be able to get the style you want). If you don't want the house, just go look around the mainland. Use the big map (Control M) in the viewer. Click the box to turn on Show for sale. You will have to pay a one-time fee to buy mainland. How much depends on the size of the land, and what the current owner wants. Between 1/2 Linden per m up to 1 Linden per m are typical prices (but price can vary). If you buy more than 512 m of mainland, you will be charged an additional monthly fee (Tier). If you did already ask for and recieve a Linden house, and if you don't want it anymore, go into the house and under the World menu in the viewer, About Land, Abandon Land button.
  22. See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall which describes how to completely clear your cache. The Clear Cache button inside the viewer may not be effective in all cases. Note: On the above Firestorm Wiki page [uSERNAME] does NOT mean your SecondLife user name. It means the user name you use to log into your own home computer or laptop (before you even start up the SL Viewer).
  23. Scroll to the bottom of this Second Life Knowledge Base article. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Password-and-account-information/ta-p/700017 Do what it says about contacting Linden Lab if your account has been compromised (password stolen). In this Answer forum, we are all just residents, like you. The Lindens seldom answer in this forum.
  24. 1. Be sure you have actually abandoned or sold off your land. Be sure you are not 'donating' tier to a group you have joined. 2. After one month, log into the Land Use Fees page in your dashboard and tier down. I believe this is the right page: https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?lang=en-US 3. If you keep your Premium status, you can have 512 m of mainland or else a Linden house without paying any additonal monthly tier fee, beyond the regular premium account fee. Premium status includes 512 m of tier, plus also gives you access to premium only sandboxes, wilderness, and live chat. 4. If after 'tiering down' you are still being billed more than you should be, call Linden Lab Billing.
  25. Search the web marketplace with General "G" selected as your maturity rating. There are many G rated beds in different styles. A separate problem is that some furnature sit functions don't work inside the bounding box of a mesh or sculpty. This can be a problem for mesh houses, and for entire sims if they have a giant sim surround. Properly constructed furnature does not have this problem. I do not know any way to tell if furniture is "properly constructed" without actually testing it inside for example a mesh house.
