  1. Recently there have been problems with some walls, floors etc. not rendering. Try right clicking on the missing wall. That often makes it show up.
  2. In addition to the DNS issues others have posted about, this could be a firewall configuration issue. Either a hardware firewall inside your modem or router, or a software firewall in your computer. Most firewalls will block Second Life by default, but this can be fixed. See: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Using-Second-Life-with-a-firewall/ta-p/1304539
  3. If you need security at high altitiude, such as for a sky box, get a security orb and put it in the sky box. Configure it to cover a reasonable area, and to give a warning before it kicks unauthorized people out. Many different security orbs are sold on the Marketplace.
  4. You may need to install or re-install Java, Adobe Flash player and Apple Quick Time player. A tricky point is that the standard Adobe Flash player (the default one for Internet Explorer) does not work for Second Life. You need to install the version of Adobe Flash player made for "other browsers" such as Firefox. You can get it from the Adobe web site.
  5. It is easy to find free or low cost lag meters on the marketplace. These will usually tell you your total number of scripts and total script memory used. Note that you will need to find a location where you can rez the meter and run scripts (because the meter has a script in it). A simple way to find out how much memory each worn attachment uses in the official Second Life viewer, is World menu --> About Land --> Script Info button --> then click on the My Avatar tab, then see how many KB each attachment uses. Try to keep the total for your avatar under 1000 KB if you can.
  6. Before giving up your house, right click on each item and take back to your inventory any furnature or decorations that you bought and rezed into you hours. Then, while standing in your house, click on the World menu at the top of your viewer, select About Land. The Abandon land button is on there.
  7. Things that say (Worn on some_body_part) are attachments and can be removed. Things that just say (Worn) are on a system layer. There are two kinds of system parts: The kind that can be entirely removed (like system pants) and the kind that can only be replaced (like skin or shape or eyes or system hair/eyebrows). If the mask is actually part of say a "skin" that you are wearing, the only way to get rid of it is to replace your skin with another skin.
  8. I have heard that there was a major security breach in a web site owned by one of the largest landlords in Second Life. As a result many passwords were stolen. Many people used the same password on that web site as they do in Second Life, so Linden Lab put all the possibly compromised accounts on hold. You need to go through the password recovery process to make a new password. Yes, if you no longer have access to the email address on file with Linden Lab, you need to file a support ticket.
  9. You should not lose anything that is in your inventory when you downgrade your account. You must sell or abandon all mainland and also abandon your Linden house if you have one, and I think also set your tier down to zero if it is above zero on your dashboard web site, before you can downgrade your account. Abandon is an option in the About Land window, when you are standing in your house. But you do not need a premium account to RENT land from a landlord. So if you are renting land, you can continue to rent land and keep any house you have on rented land. You can rent from any landlord, on either the mainland or a private island. The landlord pays the tier to the Lab. You pay the landlord, usually every week.
  10. If you are on the ground, Control-Alt-Shift-P will turn on or off property lines. These lines will show the edge of each parcel (unless the ground is covered up). To find the position in numbers, use the Build menu to rez a box, make it small, keep the box in Edit mode, and move the box untill it is right on the property line. Then read the position of the center of the box in the edit "Object" tab. It will give you X, Y, and Z numbers. X is East, Y is North, and Z is elevation.
  11. The original post was asking about religious services in Second Life. Clearly this is an event in Second Life, so it could go under the Places and Events forum where links to in-world events are allowed. I admit I don't have a clear understanding of the forum rules - when and what you can link to. .
  12. The name of the Euro 3rd party exchange is VirWox not VirWex so something fishy is going on.
  13. Try these for a start: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Standard-Sizing-Package-Updated-Male-Female/2894727 http://darisl.wordpress.com/help/standard-sizing-information/
  14. I think you clicked Teleport from a web page, but your web browser did not know where to find the Second Life application. You can still teleport from inside the SL viewer, after you log into Second Life, but you can not teleport from a web page (outside Second Life) because the wrong app starts up. For Microsoft Internet Explorer, try completely un-installing Second Life and then re-install the Second Life viewer. For Firefox internet explorer, go to Tools menu, Options, Applications tab, scroll to find SecondLife and click on the Action item, then the drop down will let you choose a different application to associate with Second Life. For Microsoft Windows, Second Life viewer is normally installed in this location (this is the actual viewer app): C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLifeViewer\SecondLife.exe
  15. If you want privacy, and you own or have rights to your land, in the viewer menues, go to World, About Land, Options and turn off (uncheck) "Avatars on other parcels can see and chat with avatars on this parcel". You can also go to World, About Land, Sound and "Restrict voice to this parcel". This does not provide 100% security, because people can fly over your parcel and cam down to see you, but if they are doing that, you will see them on the Mini-Map (Control Shift M). So long as you have this set right, they can not see you with zoom view if they are on any other parcel. Be aware they can still see decorations and furniture in you house. Only avatars are hidden.
  16. Did it show up in your Received Items box (or special Received Items folder in some 3rd party viewers)? There are now two delivery systems for the Marketplace: The old one, where boxes are delivered to your Objects folder, and the new one, where items are delivered to your Received Items box or special folder. See: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Shopping-in-the-Second-Life-Marketplace/ta-p/700189 There is also a 3rd delivery system for some in-world purchases - the folders just show up in your inventory (not inside any special folder or location).
  17. Inventory loss sometimes happens. See the following threads for more information from other SL residents: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inventory/Missing-folders-inventory-I-have-tried-everything/qaq-p/1748165 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inventory/I-just-lost-more-than-10-00-items-into-inventory-please-help/qaq-p/1753161 http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inventory/Yesterday-23rd-Nov-I-logged-in-to-find-MOST-of-my-inventory/qaq-p/1744031 I will add a few additional ideas: Most inventory loss is actually just misplaced items. Items in a different folder. But some inventory loss is real. Don't have too many items at the same level in one folder, use sub-folders if necessary. Does anyone know how many is too many? Don't let your wastebasket become overloaded, keep emptying it frequently. If it has too many items in it, it can crash your viewer when you try to empty it. Keep backup copies of everything that is copyable, in a different folder or in a rezed prim in-world. Avoid calling cards. Their status changes everytime one of your friends logs in or out, and this seems to "bump" the highlight selection in your inventory. So if you highlight one thing to delete, and one of your frends logs in while you are deleting, you could end up deleting something else. This may also be the cause of the "wearing your entire inventory" problem.

    land

It depends somewhat on the land. Small parcels on the mainland are always bought with Lindens, but you pay tier every month in US dollars. You must have a premium account. Some small mainland parcels can be bought with Lindens on the Linden Lab's own auction page. 21 mainland parcels are for sale right now on that page, from 512 m to 12,800 m. Reach it from your avatar's Dashboard website. Other mainland parcels can be bought in-world from private sellers, by clicking the "Buy Land" button in the About Land dialog window while you are standing on the land. You are paying in Lindens, so you must have enough Lindens in your avatar account to cover the cost or auction bid. Your tier will automatically go up to cover the size of the land once you take ownership, if it is not already high enough. I believe very large parcels, and private islands, must be bought with US dollars. This is different from renting land. When you rent land, your name does not appear in the About Land box as the owner. You must pay rent to the real owner (landlord) every week, normally in Lindens.
  19. If you are interested in mainland, sign up for premium and just buy the land yourself. Then you must pay tier every month, but you pay it directly to Linden Lab. There is no middleman. You can find details in the Knowledge base on this web site. Be sure you understand how tier works, and what it will cost each month (tier + premium account fee).
  20. I just looked, and it seems the styles of Linden homes now being offered are different. They do not look like what I remember from last year. Maybe Linden Lab changes the styles every year or two, to keep them 'fresh'.
  21. Tier is the capacity to own mainland, not the same thing as actually owning the land. You have the capacity to own up to 2048 + 512 but you are already using the 512 for your Linden house. So you could buy 2048 m somewhere on the mainland, build a house on it, and keep the Linden house also. If you abandon the Linden house, you could buy up to 2560 m on the mainland. I do not know any way to increase parcel land capacity in a Linden house. You get 117 land impacts, but the Linden house itself does not count against the 117. On privately owned land, the house will count as will any objects that you rez (such as furniture). On the mainland, you get 117 land impacts for each 512 m of land you own (mostly - there are a few areas that give you more). If you own multiple parcels all in the same sim/region, they all share land impacts. You can use all the land impacts available from all the parcels, on just one of them. This means you have to leave the other parcels empty. This only works if all the parcels you own are in the same sim/region. If you rent land on a private estate, talk to the estate owner or land manager.
  22. Did you upgrade to a premium account? You need a premium account to get a Linden house. Log into your Second Life account dashboard (web site for your account) and click on Premium Membership, then click on the Linden Home link. https://secondlife.com/my/account/membership.php?lang=en-US
  23. I guess you have a Linden house. Stand in your house. Click "World" in the menu at the top. Select "About Land", then on that open the "Object" tab. Look at Region Capacity and Parcel Capacity. See how many "Land Impacts" you are using, and how many you have left. You only get 117 with a Linden House. You can get more on mainland you own or estate land you rent, but it will cost you more money each month. Note: You don't have to have a premium account to rent land on a private estate. You do need a premium account to own any mainland at all. To see how many land impacts an object has, take it back to inventory. Check About Land before and after doing that, and see how much the Land Impact number decreased when you took that object away.
  24. The viewer will remember the user name of the avater you used last time. If you want to log in with a different user name on that viewer, just click into the name box with your mouse, and erase the name and type the new user name. To log in, you must know the password for each avatar. If you don't remember the password, follow what Griffin Ceawlin said.
  25. If you are on a college campus network, or a corporate network, the IT department may have blocked some internet sites including some internet "games". Your internet speed and ping times are fine, better than many home users. That is not the problem. Have you tried taking your laptop to some other location with free internet available, and tried it there? That would at least tell if anything is set up wrong on the laptop. Be aware that Second Life may run poorly on a wireless connection, although it should at least connect.
