  1. Fires are particle effects. There's a slide in Preferences >> Graphics that you can use to set the maximum number of particles you can see at once. The default is 4096, which is nomally more than enough for most people on most sims. If your sim has a zillion fires going at once, though, your graphics card might be hitting the limit and refusing to render any more of them. So..... raise the limit a little bit. Trees are usually not particles (although I can think of a nice way to make particle trees), so changing that slider isn't going to affect them. Try decreasing your draw distance a little, though, and see what happens. You may just be asking your graphics card to render too much at once.
  2. Qwalyphi Korpov wrote: /me whispers: this isn't really about flight feathers Oooooo! THAT kind of flight ...... :smileysurprised: In RL I get annoyed by teeneage pinheads who amp up the car stereo to let everyone in a 3 mile radius hear their cool music. Here, product designers build a screamer into their products so that unwitting buyers end up looking like teenage pinheads. It's a scourge in both worlds. Resist the Dark Side, Qwalyphi.
  3. I'm not sure which offline items you might mean, but you can have IM's forwarded to e-mail. Go to Preferences >> Communications to find the setting. Some group notices will also be forwarded. The big limitation is the size of your "in box", which is limited to a total of 25 items (IM, notecards, group notices, group invitations, and objects delivered to you while you are not in world). Once you have more than 25 items in that "in box" it is capped. Forwarded IMs remain in the "in box", so they still count against the total. Any further items are rejected by the system. "Rejected" means gone .... forever .... without a trace. You will never know that they were sent, and the person who sent them will never know that they were not delivered. That's why we always advise people to do ALL shopping on Marketplace while they are logged in to SL, for example.
  4. Why use up screen space and carry around another script instead of using Firestorm's spam-free, built-in flight assist?
  5. I've done the same. Even AR'd one of them last night to see if it would make a difference. That one is toast, but this is like playing Whack-A-Mole. It's a Chinese SPAM bomber.
  6. I'm afraid your question isn't very clear. Your friends are having trouble getting their viewers to start? You're having trouble finding your friends? Your friends are not rezzing? If it's a rezzing issue, try >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . If it's something else, please add more information to your question by clicking on the Options link in its upper right corner and selecting EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. BTW, Your question has a title but no text. Are you using Internet Explorer 9 as your browser? If so, you need to set Compatibility mode for this web site. While you have this website open, click the Compatibility View button that is located directly to the right side of the address bar next to the Refresh button. It looks sort of like a torn piece of paper. Once you do that, IE9 will let you post things here with no problem.

  9. You'll have to tell us a lot more before we can answer a question like that. What viewer are you using? What kind of a computer are you using? What operating system? What are its specifications? What have you tried already? What happened when you tried? You can add information to your question by clicking on the Options link in its upper right corner and selecting EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  10. It's quite easy. Go to your dashboard at secondlife.com and select Accounts >> Cancel Account from the menu on the left side of the page, or simply go to https://secondlife.com/my/account/cancel.php?lang=en-US . You may want to sell any L$ in your account through the Lindex before you leave. You really don't need to do that, of course. If you are a Basic member, just walk away. Your account will just sit here, waiting for you to change your mind. If you ever decide to come back -- lots of people do -- then your inventory and avatar will still be here. If you cancelled your account, though, you'd find that your stuff would only be around for a few months and it would cost you $9.95 to get it back if you decided to return. If you're a Premium member, abandon your land and home and then change to Basic membership before you walk away

  13. Check to be sure that you don't have a firewall or an antivirus program denying you access to Second Life. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Configure_your_software_firewall for information about how to teach your firewall to let you in and look at http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=as_anti-virus_white_listing_steps to find out how to get your anti-virus program to do the same. There may be other problems, of course, but that's a very common one. If you are still having trouble, come back here and add more information to your question by clicking on the Options link in its upper right corner and selecting EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.

  15. And when you revert to the older version of the viewer, as Marigold suggests, be sure to go to Preferences (CTRL + P) >> Setup and UNcheck the box that authorizes automatic updates. There is no such thing as a "forced" update. Automatic updates are the default, but it's always your choice whether to accept the default or turn it off.
  16. Pamela Galli wrote: Would just like to add that creativity doesn't just mean creating content, but using the content creatively. My customers love to decorate and landscape, for example, and some of the avis and outfits people put together are works of art -- and photographers do amazing things documenting content. You don't really need creating skills to be creative. Amen, Pam. My definition of creativity embraces not only what the content creators do to produce new objects, scripts, animations, and landscapes, but also the imaginative work that residents do in customizing their local world with things that they have chosen. Because I have come to appreciate the power of SL's market economy, I also include the role of entrepreneurs and merchants who are the bridge between creators and consumers. We are not separate communities, any more than people are in RL, so we all contribute to the dynamic nature of a user-designed world. Few online games can match that model.
  17. I am tempted to make a flippant answer, because it's impossible to put your avatar underground unless you happen to be sitting on a physical object. Instead of saying something flippant, though, let me ask a few questions .... How do you know that you are underground? Have you used your camera to see what's "overhead"? What does it look like around you? What is your exact position? (Look at the very top of your screen, where it tells you the name of the sim. There are three numbers next to it. Especially if those numbers are <10.0,10.0,10.0>, let us know.) You can add important information to help us answer by clicking the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and selecting EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. Meanwhile, consider the easy solutions: (1) You are in a cave. Find the exit or just log out and log in at a new location next time. (Try the Smith or Pooley sim. They are nice and quiet.) (2) You are under water. Hit the Home key on your keyboard and then use PgUP to fly straight up until you are out of the water.
  18. Medhue Simoni wrote: lol, it's interesting that you say that. Boring, I mean. Cause many non creators in SL would call SL boring right now. I would never say that, cause my love of SL has everything to do with creating. My personal thoughts on why SL is not as fun for some, has everything to do with interaction. Creating interactive items, whether that be avatar to avatar or avatar to object, is not all that easy in SL, outside of the basic things that every1 does. NPCs is just 1 aspect and considering Rod's experience, and now Will's, I'm expecting to see all the things that I always wished SL had to create with. Mesh is 1 big thing, and that is here now. Pathfinding is another very major thing for NPC, and they are working on that now. Currently, we have always had the best animation system ever concieved for a game, tho it could be improved in many ways. Some are going to say, "Other games have these things, so how does this push SL over the top?". My answer would be that it is the prosumer aspect that will make these items and other new things LL develops, that much more exciting than what can be produced in other games. When I did MODs and played FPS games, it was the MODs that every1 used. You could not play on some1's server unless you had the right MOD. Many times, the MODs were much better environments, because the creators could test and test and test and then adjust, making them way more fun. Plus, you will have a choice of thousands of different games, Role Play, and interaction that you can't get anywhere else. Many people are snarky about NPCs and combat in SL, but this combo allows you to have fun while waiting for real people to play with. Those are my thoughts too, Medhue. I wouldn't have come to SL four and a half years ago if I had thought it was a game, and I certainly would not have stayed. I know everyone has a different motivation, but creativity is mine. I spend much of my time in world scripting or building things, and a lot of offline time texturing. I'm excited by the challenge of learning and shaping my world. I would be bored to tears in a game where a team of pros created all of the fancy graphics and left me with nothing to do but wander around slaying dragons. If that's the future fo SL, I will be very disappointed. I suspect, though, that Void's vision of the future is closer to the mark, so you and I can breathe easy. The commercial side of SL is a major driver, and it depends on having not only enthusiastic buyers but a healthy cadre of creators. The market economy of SL is a major asset. Having a couple of gamers in the boardroom will help sharpen SL's focus, but I believe that focus will be on leveraging SL's market economy, not on making it yet another online game.
  19. To be really clear, you aren't actually "carrying" the second av with one of those scripted tools. They are like a couples dance ball, where each av has its own animation. The "main" avatar uses normal animations for standing, walking, flying.... and the second av uses a sitting animation. The sitting av is actually sitting on a poseball, positioned so that it appears to be sitting on the main av's shoulder.
  20. Work at 2048 x 2048 or 1024 x 1024 and save at 512 x 512. Downsizing always smoothes out any irregularities in lines and gives you a cleaner look. The only thing to watch out for is that extremely small details (less than 4 pixels wide) will vanish as you downsize, so don't over-detail your work. Disregard any information about DPI. The only thing that counts is the total number of pixels in your image. Screens haven't had a standard 72 pixels per inch since the 1990s, and since the image's actual dimensions on screen depend on how much each user zooms in on it anyway, DPI has no meaning at all here. As Ceera says, if you use PNG and your image does not contain any transparency, use the Save for Web option in Photoshop to be sure that it saves as a 24-bit file instead of a 32-bit file. Otherwise, you may have unintended transparency, potential alpha sorting issues, and a files size that's 25% larger than it needs to be.
  21. Are you always using those three different machines at the same physical location? That is, are they all plugged into the same router/modem? I'm wondering whether you simply have a bad connection and are losing packets. Try .. (1) If you have been using wireless, don't. Many people have bad luck using wireless in SL. There's too much interference from garage door opens, cell phones, "Smart" appliances, and the guy next door generating RF interference with time warp experiments in his basement. Use a cable connection instead. (2) Reboot your router. Just unplug it from the power for a few minutes while you go out for coffee. Plug it back in and reboot your computer for good measure. (3) Consider using different DNS settings. Instead of whatever your ISP assigns, try using Google's free public DNS servers. You'll find easy instructions for making the change at http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

    Linden$ free

That's a really good question. Try clicking on the L$ balance icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Sometimes it takes a nudge to get it in sync with SL's servers. If that doesn't work, you can try looking for a Linden in Aditi, or call the LL billing office. The billing team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Toll-Free (US/Canada) 800.294.1067 Long-Distance 703.286.6277 Local Toll-Free numbers * France: 0805.101.490 * Germany: 0800.664.5510 * Japan: 0066.33.132.830 * Portugal: 800.814.450 * Spain: 800.300.560 * UK: 0800.048.4646 * Support is in English Only
  23. Without any more information than that, I can only make a wild guess. Try opening Preferences (CTRL + P) >> Graphics >> Hardware Settings and UNchecking the box for Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects (VBO). If that doesn't work (and I have only a slight hope that it will), please open your own question in Answers and provide more information about your computer and viewer. I only spotted your note here by accident. By hiding it in a comment on someone else's resolved thread, you almost guaranteed that nobody would read it.
  24. Not everyone logs in to SL every day or checks their e-mail. If you still haven't heard in another day or two, follow it up with a second polite note and finally, if you STILL haven't heard, file a support ticket at https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ , selecting Marketplace from the pulldown menu.
  25. Open your dashboard at secondlife.com. Go to the Land Manager link on the left side of the page, then My Mainland. Your home address is there. (Assuming that it's a Linden Home.)
