  1. Generally speaking, the documentation about LSL is not produced by LL. The wiki is maintained by scripters like you and me. Beyond very basic descriptions of syntax, LSL is offered essentially as a black box. Users figure out how its functions behave and share what they learn about its quirks.
  2. Completely? Go to Preferences >> Sound & Media and UNcheck the box that enables Voice.
  3. Open Inventory and click the Recent tab. Then click the gear symbol in the lower left corner. Choose "Show Filters" and then change the days and hours so that you will be able to see things that you have received over the past few days. If you really did receive the items, they will be in that list.
  4. So it's the group tag. The beta grid is a different deal, so that doesn't mean much. You're going to have to talk with Live Chat or get a friend to eject you from that group. Until you get rid of that tag, you're not going to log in.
  5. We can only hope. At least you reported it. These things do have a way of clearing up after a while, if only because LL does something in a later upgrade that fixes it coincidentally. You might ask the sim owner to restart the sim too, BTW. It just might be something small that got borked and could be shaken loose by a restart. Good luck.
  6. It's not a collision test. It's simply testing to see how far you are from the target. You're using a touch_start event, so that's where it has to go. In your particular case, // give it in Linda's snippet is your llGiveInventory(llDetectedKey(0),llGetInventoryName(,0));
  7. This sounds like one to report with a support ticket. Go to https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ and select Land & Region from the drop down menu, then include all details about your region and the problem. LL has been upgrading servers across the grid recently, so they may have scrambled something on your sim.
  8. Because you didn't tell us which "tips in other topics" you might have tried, it's hard to know what else to recommend. The first and most obvious thing to try is logging in to a different simulator. LL has been upgrading servers for the past couple of weeks, so you may have been trying to connect to one that is off line. Try logging in at Smith or Pooley and see if that works. You might also have a firewall or antivirus program that is blocking access. Especially if you are on a campus or corporate network, check with your IT department to see what they may have changed. Unfortunately, the other reasonably common problem is not as easy to solve >>> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-6608 . If you logged out last time while wearing a group tag with "illegal" characters in it, that bug will prevent you from loggging back in until you can remove the tag. If you're a Premium member, contact Live Chat and ask for their help. If not, you'll have to have a friend or an alt go in world, find the group's owner, and ask him to eject you from the group. Be sure that the group owner knows that other members may have the same problem, so he should change that tag.
  9. Are you using Linux? There were Linux problems with audio in some earlier versions of Phoenix. They were resolved in later updates, so you may want to upgrade or see here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=media.
  10. One possible reason for occasional "freezing" is a weak or intermittent connection with your router. First, if you are using wireless for some reason, don't. Interference from cell phones, garage door openers, your "smart" refrigerator, and the guy next door building a TARDIS in his basement will add noise to your signal and rob it of bandwidth. Use a direct cable connection instead. Then, unplug your router from the power and walk away for a few minutes. When you come back and plug it it, the router will have cleared its RAM and be able to get a fresh hold on an IP address. Although it shouldn't be necessary, you might also consider changing your DNS settings from whatever your ISP assigned you by default. Try using Google's free public DNS servers. Instructions are here >>> http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/

  12. This is a recognized bug >>>> https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-26347? Until LL can fix it, some people have been able yo work around it by turning off Basic Shaders and Shadow in Preferences >> Graphics. Another very good option, of course, is to use a different viewer, like Firestorm.
  13. I don't think I have ever been bored enough to want to dash through secret portals in SL, picking up shiny coins and getting shot out of cannons. Thanks, LL, but I'll let the kids have this perk. :smileytongue:
  14. That's a communication problem between your computer and SL's servers. Information about your appearance has to be "baked" onto your avatar on your own computer, saved there, and then uploaded to SL before it's fully visible there. If the necessary information is messed up in transmission, you may end up with a borked file on your computer, or SL's servers may end up with a borked file. Either way, your av's appearance defaults to a fluffy cloud. What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilitites here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today.

MY poor little avatar doesn't like to be cooped up in some box in the sky.She likes to go out of the house and run around wherever without having to fly or TP. [....] Yes, the ground is outdoors for me, too, and the sky is indoors, but I do both. When I'm spending time at my country home on the ground, I tend to be in the garden most of the time, and that's where I've put a lot of my effort (and prims) into decorating. I retreat to my midtown condominium in the sky when I want to sit indoors listening to music or work in my shop on the upper deck.

    Hair

First, put on a bald cap. You'll find one in inventory, in one of the subfolders of the Library >> Clothing folder at the bottom of Inventory. That bald cap will cover your system hair, making you ..... well .... bald. Then you have to go find yourself some prim hair. Again, you'll find some in the folders in your Inventory, but you can also do what almost everyone does sooner or later..... look for a hair shop and buy some that looks good and fits your self-image. When you visit a hair shop, you'll find that shops always offer you a chance to try on "demo" hair to see what it looks like before you shell out L$. Demo hair is usually free, but may cost you L$1 (about 0.4 cents) in some shops.
  17. waryer wrote: how do i start...all i get is information but no game That's because there is no "game." This is Second Life. You can find games to play here, if that's what you want to do. You can also create objects, landscapes, animations, and scripts. You can run a business, be a pole dancer or a DJ, buy and sell land, or just lie on a virtual beach and listen to a music stream. There are no rules, no goal, no pointsor ranks to earn, no dragons to slay, and no quest to guide you from one adventure to another. It's life. Make anything of it that you want.
  18. JeanneAnne wrote: [..... ] I've said this before in these fora and been dogpiled by exploited apologists suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, for my troubles, but oh well... If you don't mind paying for the "priviledge" of creating content that enriches corporate executives and investors, rather than being paid for your services, then carry on ... It ceases to amaze me that the 99% will defend the 1% who exploit them. Jeanne Now you are disparaging us, and I for one do not care for the tone. We are all here by choice, as you are, and are free to leave at any time if we decide that the inconvenience of living in a world supported by corporate profit motives is greater than the pleasure we enjoy in it. Far from being "Stockholm Syndrome," my own decision to stay in a less than perfect SL has to do with the fact that I can carry on a creative business and enjoy the company of friends on a day to day basis without being more than mildly annoyed at some of LL's decisions. Put simply, I care about my own welfare and that of my neighbors in SL. The amount of profit that LL makes -- a sum that I do not know, and doubt that you know either -- is irrelevant to my enjoyment of Second Life.
  19. I think that was a coincidence, a matter of changing a prim parameter randomly. If it worked, though, congratulations. :smileywink: You certainly don't need to show the object in search, since you own it now.
  20. Sy Beck wrote: Out of interest, what do you think would happen if all the paying customers took your advice too? Your freeloading theory of SL economics is only possible because there are people doing all the things you advise others not to do, such as buying land, bringing money into the game and purchasing premium. If your contribution to SL is to just take from it, well that's fine, but a little less disparaging and general disdain of others who choose to contribute wouldn't go amiss either. They are after all the ones paying for your little free playground to exist. The obvious answer is that SL would collapse. While I agree with the sentiment of your post, however, I'm not sure that the question is relevant here. Unlike in RL, a freeloading resident of SL isn't actually taking anything from the society around her/him. Avatars need no shelter or food, so freeloaders truly can survive without taking anything from those who create or spend in world. True, if everyone did that, the world would disappear. If a reasonably small part of the population does, though, they are not a drag on the rest of us. You are quite right, though ..... the disparaging tone was unnecessary.
  21. Right click the object and select EDIT. On the General page of th Edit window, UNcheck the box that says "For Sale" and change the deafult click action to "Touch". Normally that should remove the L$ cursor. Unfortunately, however, some objects seem to have long memories. For those few, the only way I have found to get rid of the cursor is to add a script that looks like this ... default{ state_entry() { llSetClickAction(CLICK_ACTION_TOUCH); llRemoveInventory(llGetScriptName()); }} That script will self-destruct after changing the cursor.
  22. I agree, Tristizia, at least to a point. My computer was new in 2008, and I replaced its graphics card with a GeForce 9600GT with 1 Gb of on-card memory last year. I'm running on Windows XP. Unless I make the mistake of going to an overcrowded club full of script-bloated avs, i usually have a frame rate between about 40 and 75. I rarely crash, I have had no significant inventory problems, and my av isn't a fluffy cloud for more than 10 seconds after login. I don't think I have a charmed life. I just know where my graphics settings have to be optimized for good performance on this machine, and I take good care of my hardware. There is a limit, though. We see an endless stream of complaints here in the Answers forum from people who are trying to run an SL viewer on an underpowered $300 notebook computer with an Intel Mobility graphic chip, often on a wireless connection. Even with the lowest settings, SL is never going to work for them. I'm no apologist for LL and its V3 viewer, but it's not their fault that a person wih a substandard computer can't log in. It's also unfair to blame LL for moving the goalposts, so that yesterday's non-SSE-compliant computer can't run today's viewer code. The "average" computer and SL viewer codes have to keep pace with each other and have to keep moving ahead each year. There will come a time when my 2008 computer can no longer run a "modern" SL viewer, no matter how I tweak the settings. That's not LL's fault. That's progress.
  23. So far, you have asked the same question here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Getting-Started/hello-how-can-I-buy-a-furnish-home-and-a-car/qaq-p/1153387 and here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Getting-Started/hello-i-can-i-buy-a-furnish-home-and-a-car-I-add-tried-but-got-a/qaq-p/1153619 and here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/ty-how-can-i-get-a-furnish-home-i-want-to-enjoy-the-game-i-had/qaq-p/1189443 and here >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Account/I-paid-but-cant-get-a-furnish-home-and-my-car-what-can-i-do/qaq-p/1190817 And we have answered you every single time. If you don't understand the answers, say so. If you do understand them, go buy your house and car. Please do NOT start another thread.
  24. If you already have an animated GIF, what you really need is a way to convert it to a multi-frame TGA and then use llSetTextureAnim to animate it. The service at http://www.peregrinesalon.com/2009/01/05/major-upgrade-to-animated-gif-to-animated-sl-texture-conversion-tool-v04/ will do that (although they seem to be offline right at the moment). Even if you don't use the Peregrine Salon service, it's an easy matter to make a multi-frame TGA yourself. Then it's a trivial bit of scripting to use http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetTextureAnim.
