I'd still have no idea what TD even means if not old salts would have stressed that part excessively as very important. TD 0.99 is bad enough to fok up your ride, so they told me. Maybe in 2014 it's less relevant than in 2007 but that's the credo I grew up with.
  2. Lost your avie? That's an impossible thing, ArtsApart. Your camera is always right behind it by default. And when you log out so does your avie. They don't have a secret life of their own, no worries your avie might get into any trouble while you're offline. They just go p00f. Most players have their viewers set up so that you log on at exactly the point you logged off. So if your avie was last seen stuck in an elevator that will be exactly the location where you'll meet him/her/it again. I'd never trust Orca alone in SL, she's too much of a loudmouth and always runs into trouble, head on. That little brat has this fatal tendency even when clever and intelligent me is watching over her. Dunno why.
  3. Perrie Juran wrote: Where do you get that? That tiny minor fluctuation in Time Dilation is insignificant. No, absolutely not! I don't know what you do in SL, mine is rather active and depends on good fps and no lag. And I can tell you when you are racing boats, bikes, cars or anything like that, every drop under 1.0 is a very significant change to the worse and pretty much inacceptable. TD 0.99 is bad enough to turn water into super glue.
  4. Nina842 wrote: Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll check what speed I get when I connect my computer to the router. With wireless connection I get download speed 27.10 Mbps in speedtest.net. The statistics: Ok, your download speed is more than just decent, it's very good. But now let's have a looksie at your stats: fps 4.1 is inacceptable jerky, try to never get below 25, since this is traditionally the speed in movies. bandwith 90kb. You see what became of your 27 MB? It all went to sheet. But no reason to panic, 90 kb is pretty good fro playing in SL. 0.00% packet loss: SUPER! Your wireless doesn't seem to hurt you much. ping sim 432 ms: if that's your usual result it's not good. Means a ping of almost half a second!!! Major lag. Where are you located, on the dark side of the moon??? TD 0.978 shows us the sim you're in is not healthy. Optimum and only acceptable number is 1.0, everything lower means laaag. Sim fps should be 45, but that's a minor problem. All in all we see here a multitude of parameters having a negative effect or your experience ... BUT: the main culprit is your Intel 3000 onboard graphics. I hazard a guess: you're on a 300 $/€ laptop or a very weak office desktop or on some Apple lifestyle product. The only way to get a better experience would be to invest into better machinery.

I login to SL to communicate ... and to login only to have group after group fail to open for me is very discouraging, not to mention embarassing as a resident ... this is SECOND LIFE ... where people come together ... but how can we come together in an environment where group chat fails us, dies on us, closes for no reason on us ... Øh, I dunno. Are you maybe confusing SL with Facetwit or some sort of social networx stuff? I for my part am not too keen on chatting and meeting too many people here. All that social stuff just distracts from the things I wanna do in SL. And I'm not the only antisocial person here, not by far. How do you think all the artists and builders can come up with all their wonderful creations, by wasting their time with blabbering away the whole day? Furthermore, yes groups chats aren't very good. We often experience terrible chatlag. But that a groupchat closes and dies on me, that has never happened. You should check your connection to SL and your hardware. Valentines Day? Wotz dat??? Anything special we can't live without?
  6. Of course removal of scripts is only possible if the item has mod permissions.
  7. Hi Rhys. I'm far less geeky about all that technical stuff than Nalates and my English is catastrophic, but please let me try to explainify: As Jessica Lyon (project leader Firestorm) has stated in an interview, the cache should be cleared ONLY when you suffer corrupted textures, and for NO other reason. It works simply, in layman's terms, like the overflow thingy in your bathtub: as soon as the cache/tub is full old textures will be purged when new ones are coming in. AFAIK the cache has nothing to do with your inventory, as that is kept on an LL asset server. Yes, when I'm a cloud for onger than a couple seconds after login I do all the stuff you do as well. Relog. If that doesn't help I slip into a more comfortable n00b outfit. That mostly unclouds me and i can start buiding myself up again.
  8. Halløchen Readun, was du da beschreibst is total normal.
  9. Mandy Carbenell wrote: my router had connection issues so I crashed. After that I cleared cache and relogged. Oké, your router had connection issues. That indicates local problems with your router/connection. Can't blame your viewer or the Lindens for stuff like that. Why o why do so many people still believe in the old and wrong solution of clearing the cache? All it does is purging your cache so that your connection/router/viewer have even more hard work once you're back in game. Coz your cache needs to be repopulated, which makes for some laggyness during the first couple days after clearing the cache. If you receive message about being logged out by LL it means your PC has a wobbly/lost connection to the servers. LL just did some unscheduled maintenance on the grid, so many of use experienced problems of one sort or the other during the last couple days. No reason to set up everything new on your end. To make sure please conduct a speedtest to Dallas/TX, USA (datz where SL's biggest server colo is) and optionally do a tracert to secondlife.com. Are you getting results close to what your ISP was promising?
  10. Chantal Glenwalker wrote: Loooks like a damn connection issue again. Might be local. I hear you have a kinda polar winter in your parts of the world. Particularly the Nothern American eastcoast is buried under snow n stuff. Which affects copper wires and wireless connections all the same. Please conduct a speedtest and a tracert to secondlife.com. Should tell you on which hop your connection goes to sh:t. But you're correct in guessing the culprit might be LL's @$$hat servers and their weekend crew. Took me several tries last night just to delete something.
  11. Jandid Harcourt wrote: Everybody I know that plays this game has this same problem but ive never knew why. Why does the SL website/game make my internet run so slow? Obviously, and fortunately for me, you don't know me then, since I don't experience that problem. LL's website is just like any other website, all the extensions (MP, maps, whatever) as well. Now the "game" itself is a different beast altogether. Since it opens up many multiple ports and also depends on your upload far more than any other game. And what everybody should know about the rules of SL: 1) you don't do anything else on the internet while playing SL 2) you don't skype 3) you don't check your mail 4) you don't do torrents 5) you don't watch or listen to streams other than the ones available in world 6) you never talk about fight club

  13. steph Arnott wrote: Maybe for now be best to partition the hard drive and see how it goes. Thanks for that info. Yes yes! Try it first out as dual boot. Just make sure to install Win first. No need to partition the hard drive, Win and Linux will figure it out between themselves. I ran my PC in dual boot for like half a year before I noticed I'm hardly ever on Win anymore and finally made the jump. Since I don't run any specialist software and don't even have a printer, scanner or anything exotic installed it was a very smooth transition. Oh, and most Linux distros come with the option to run the OS from DVD before you install. Of course that is slow but a good way to see if all your hardware is supported. For Linux there is a piece of software, named Vine, on which you can run a lot of Win software. Not all, mind ya. Since Vine isn't an emulator but a compabiity layer general consensus is that most Win software runs equally well and even faster than directly under Windows.
  14. Yes, Kwakkelde, by all the great stuff Clem and team are doing, it's a friggin' shame they still cling on momma Ubuntu's skirts with its short release cycles. Well, anyway, I decided to turn my back on Debian/Ubuntu and switched to the Arch based Manjaro. I'm feeling enough at home in Linux now, so I dared to jump. So far no complaints. It's as easy as it gets (they borrowed a lot of the nice stuff from Mint) but still not as newbie friendly as Mint. On the upside with Arch you always have the latest updates and it's a rolling release, so I never ever need to install it again. In 2034 I will still have the most up-to-date OS and apps available for me. I doubt that my PC will last thatb long tho. So the switch was well worth it. And for when I really need the Terminal (which I'm slowly getting used to) I just look up all the commands on this super duper helpful link. And hey, that is not geeky; nobody complained about the complexity of DOS, remember? And that way hellishly complicated compared to Linux's simple command structure.
  15. ... and as I just got the latest Singu alpha update ... Hello there, just clicker me. ... and let the magic happen. :matte-motes-nerdy:
  16. steph Arnott wrote: Linux is too complicated to get things to run for the majority of people, until Linux make the setup and use as easy as MS then it will remain in the group of users that understand OS, I tried two or three times and the frustration was just too much. I detest MS, but at least it is easy to work with, Linux makes me feel like I need a degree in computer science. You will most likley say it is not difficult, but to most it is. People just want to turn the computer on and do there thing and not spend hours getting stuff to function. Oh, ugh :smileysurprised: Well, all I can tell you is that I'm the least geeky person, at least when I see all the clever people here in forum. I wanna ask you, when did you last play with Linux? Because what you're stating here sounds very true for Linux like 4 or 5 years ago. Do it nowadays with a modern distro like Mint 16 on Cinnamon desktop and it's totally different. Installation was a breeze and everyting worked right out of the box. The desktop looks and feels like a mix of Win7 and MacOS and not once did I have to use the much loathed terminal. Particularly since I got used to Linux, am on it since 1 year, and switched to Manjaro my life became even easier. I always get the latest nVidia drivers updated automagically and my favourite SL viewer, Singularity alpha, is already in the repository. So I download and install it with a single command. It even upgrades automatically as well. Every couple days I have a little icon on the taskbar that lights up in red and indicates new upgrades are available. I click on it when and if I want. 1 Mouseclick and the magic starts. All my software and drivers, even the kernel ... swoosh! I gotta say I'm much more productive since I'm on Linux and spend much less time with system maintenance than ever before. Linux is ready for the primetime and does exatly what you described: People wil be able to just switch the computer on and start to work right away.

Afraid of the steep 2 days learning curve you'll have to face with a Linux distro? A new computer is the perfect way to do the jump. Step up now and be happy forever from the very moment you're firing up your new system for the first time! :smileyhappy:
  18. Emma Krokus wrote: it's hard for me to know what is absolutely necessary and what are frills. Oké, easy task, challenge accepted.:matte-motes-nerdy: What you absolutely need: - a case (d'uh) - power supply 500+ watts - motherboard (no "gaming" stuff) of decent quality - Processor - Graphics card (nVidia GTX 6xx or 7xx series, models upwards of x6x) - RAM DDR3, 8 - 16 GB - hard drive 1 TB 7.200 RPM - cooling solution. Aftermarket fans are often much more sufficient and quiter than the stuff that comes with the original parts Nice to have: - SSD Frills: - sound card - integrated wifi adapter/modem/router And here comes the crux: not all online shopping sites supply you with a compatibility service, that's why I prefer to purchase from a brick and mortar store. Because the guys there can tell you exactly if your rather biggish GTX 680 will fit into the nice stylish case you chose for your build.

  21. Emma Krokus wrote: live in a rural place and am unsure about the local computer shop. My budget is around £1,500 - the looks or size of the desktop are of no particular concern. Monitor, keyboard and mouse aren't needed. Well, when you write "rural" in the UK, it's not really rural like many USA citizens define rural. I bet the next major city isn't more than 2 hours away from your home. I'd check the local shop anyway, simply for the reason it's local, so better support than having to schlepp your box thru the whole country. They might not have particularly the bestest prices but should be able to get you everything and assemble the machine for you. £ 1500 = € 1800. That's PLENTY! I paid around € 1000 for my pc (without keyboard, mouse and screen but with Win 7) like 4 years ago. I almost never shut it down, and that thing is still running like on the first day. Super reliable. Ok, I'd never run Windows again but that has nothing to do with the hardware. Oh, and every 3-6 months I open up the box and give it a good cleaning. So, yes, for your budget you should get a 128-256 GB SSD, 1 TB hdd, a very good motherboard(I recommend Gigabyte), a beefy i5 or i7 processor and a GTX 670/680/770/780. Dont'g go for the reference card but chose wisely one of the board partner's cards: MSI, EVGA, Zotac, Asus, Gigabyte and others spring to mind. For a power unit 500 watts should do the trick, those uberbig 1000 watts and more bricks are just nonsense. Also you won't need any watercooling mumbojumbo. Decent quality fans are plenty good enough if you don't overclock (and why would you?) I'm living in South Africa these days and it's often very hot here. Still I'm only using the standard fans that came with CPU, GPU, PSU and the box. Never had a single case of overheating. For both, CPU and GPU, don't let them sell you ATI crap. Intel/nVidia is the combo for SL. And don't let them sell you a seperate sound card, nowadays integrated soundchips on the mobo are super quality. Mine does 7.1 surround, which I never use. In fact you won't need any of the stuff the big brand manufacturers are putting into their machines. Keep it simple, robust and stable.
  22. Hi Lexxxa, a laptop, no matter the price, is always a compromise. It's in their nature since the day Toshiba came out witn the very first laptops. They try to combine 2 uncombinable things, so something has to give. Ok, now then, if you really must have a laptop: yes, Asus and MSI spring to mind. While MSI is blowing Asus right out of the water (mostly), Asus are way better quality. Have a look at Lenovo and Gigabyte as well, they are recently starting to become attractive for gamers.
