  1. just turn all group members into owners send a group notice, tell them about the change and wish them good luck leave the group done I'm kinda surprised that you're selling us very old core functionalities as if it's a scandalous new LL fukup. Sometimes it makes sense to clue up about something ... before doing it.
  2. I'd say Nvidia, didn't have good experience with AMD. So staying with Nvidia you go like this: GTX, no GT, must be GTX. GTX used to start at GTX x60, nowadays they already label x50 cards as GTX. I'm sceptical. The GTX lineup ends with x80 or x90, depending on generation. Older generations used to have xx5 models which were specific 2 GPU setups. Never mind that now, it's more trouble than good. Xxx: first number is the generation of cards, so a 8xx is newer than a 7xx, 6xx and so on. Newer is better. D'uh. xXx: second number is the "goodness" of the specific card. A 680 should still be better than a 860. While cards are getting better from one generation to the next, the jumps are mostly not soooo huge. Ti: that moniker specifies a better specced "Titan" version of a card. They mark a semi-step in between goodness classes. So although GTX 660ti is better than a standard GTX 660 it won't be as good as a standard GTX670. So the best you could get right now (not taking into account any exotic special beancounting OCD ubergeek types) would be a GTX 880 ti. And don't settle for the reference design (the original Nvidia card) but alway go for one from a board partner like Zotac, Gigabyte, EVGA, Asus, MSI. They are often slightly overcocked right outta the box and have better cooling components. If still available from shops in your neighborhood or mail-order shops, I'd try to get a 780 or 680. They should be drastically discounted by now. And there you have it: the creme of the crop, the tops of the pops, the ultimate bragging rights. :matte-motes-nerdy:
  3. Syo is completely right: SL isn't any more save or unsafe thanany other thing you're doing on the interwebz. Every computer is hackable, often its made easy for hackers by stupid users handing out their personal data like candy. What worked for me so far, without being any geekish: I delete any email at once if I don't know the sender. I keep my curiosity at bay and don't just click any random link I come across. I'm on a desktop computer 95% of the time, so I don't have a webcam or microphone. But the most helpful was my move from Windows to Linux. Even if someone tries to put a virus in your machine it'll just bounce back.
  4. Sorry Kat, as far advanced as we Europeans are technologically, I wouldn't know of any company building skyboxes. We just don't have a strong tradition of living in the sky. Hmmm, I guess neither have the Americas, Africa or Asia. Maybe you should ask the Aussies, they have the weirdest things. :smileyvery-happy:
  5. Madelaine McMasters wrote: You should be able to run an SL viewer on a Win7 laptop Not necessarily, Madi. You won't believe what dramatically bad underpowered craptops ppl are using to attend SL. It's really sad. Only chance I see for the OP would also be the Radegast viewer. It's not pretty tho. I wouldn't do it if I got paid for using it. It's that bad!
  6. LOL, that's exactly the question I never found the answer to myself. I always open the viewer folder and start by doubleclickering the Singularity 64-bit Alpha (coz datz my viewer) icon. And, right, SL seems to run much smoother on my Manjaro Linux than it ever did on Windoze. :smileyhappy:
  7. Aislin Ceawlin wrote: I remember wandering aimlessly through other peoples homes ( didn't seem like many had security set back in the day) Aha! So it was you! You turned all the harmless home owners into the needlessly paranoid aholes they are now. :smileyvery-happy:
  8. Only one explainification that springs to mind: You, sir, are an underdeveloped troglodyte with the mindset of a 3 y/o. Solution: make up your frakking mind about what you want and stop manipulating a system that's on the brink of breaking for all of us. You're not helping at all.
  9. That was one long sentence and a question without question mark. Ergo my reply: TL;DR (for I can be as adhs as you if I want to)
  10. Elisha Kling wrote: A machine I bought just one year ago, that was capable of supporting three Avis at high without crashing can now barely sustain a single avi. I have recently bought a custom gaming machine very capable of competing at the highest levels of most online games, and yet SL performance is extremely limited at ultra, tolerable at high and only really functional at med. Sorry, but I don't really believe that. My machine which was kinda average when I built it in 2014 can still support at least 2 avies and is on ultra settings all the time (256 DD, 12 avies, with all bells and whistles but shadows). Please post your specs and telll us what you have running on your machine besides SL. I know some ppl who have photoshop, forum, email, office, marketplace, YouTube, Skype, all that useless **bleep** running and then they wonder why their poor compi is going bonkers.
  11. While I generally agree with your post and would say "Hands off that crappola!" as well, I still gotta ask what's so terrible about Win 7 Home Premium? I mean apart from it being a totally unacceptable Microsoft OS? And the table? LOL, if OP hadn't copypasted it we'd not know about what we're talking here. @ Amethyst Damour: you might have heard the old wisdom of "the right tool for the job". It's the same with software/programs and hardware. In case you wanna hang a picture at a wall, you need a hammer/nail combo and you need to know how to use it. In case you wanna enter the virtual world of Second Life you need reasonably strong hardware. You don't know what you need you must first study the requirements. LL hemself are having a table of required hardware on their website. By studying that you'll find out that particularly in the graphics compartment you need a good beefy graphics card, one that's doing particularly well with Open GL. 2 minutes more of research and you find out that traditionally Nvidia is better in that field than AMD. It's not so true nowadays anymore but in general you can't go wrong with Nvidia. So try to find a PC with as good as possible Nvidia graphics. 5 minutes more research on Nvidia's website and you'll know which of their cards will do. You'll also find out that general processing power isn't that important for running SL, so you'll know to spend the biggest part of your budget for the graphics, and only then on any other stuff.

  13. Pretty much every "real" desktop Linux should be perfect for running SL on, Matthew. I personally tried Mint and am now on Manjaro, many ppl are using *buntu and I know a girl from UK which is on SuSE. Prolly BackTrack is indeed not the best platform for plying games from.
  14. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: I looked up AMD A10-7850K chips on the AMD website and it said it used AMD R7 brand graphics which also supports both DirectX and Open GL. Ok, that sounds great. Guess I'm gonna switch from the Intel/Nvidia camp to AMD in my next build. Will save some serious dough and see how it goes. If it turns out sub-optimal I can always add a nice beefy Nvidia card. Or wait for the next gen of APUs with R9 graphics.
  15. Michael Tempel wrote: performs better than my nvidia GT610 rig Of course it does! Everything runs better than a GT610! That's Nvidia's lowest of the low GPU. Heck, I guess even an Intel onboard chip is better. The AMD A10-7850K is a marvellous chip but that's for games. Even the latest and hardest games are optimised and easier on your GPU than SL. I doubt you'll get much joy from that AMD chip in SL. But don't fret, even if you've wasted some money on that APU you can always add a decent Nvidia card later on shouldn't you be satisfied. I'm playing with the thought of going the same route in my next build.

Download is abyssmal and reminds me on the early days of dial-up speeds. Upload faster than download??? Heck, I wish I had 0.93 MB upload speed. There is definately something very wrong with your connection. Call your ISP and complain. Tell them they must reset your port, redesign your port, check your wires or whatever. But they MUST do something ... else you go with another ISP. Because with connection like this you can't play SL. 0.87 would be bad even if LL had a server farm in your basement but you still must ping the USA which will cut your "speed" in half.
  17. Yeah, zacly. It's easy to see when you forget the generational number but look at the model: the old card was a x6xx, the new one only a x3x. Sorry to say but that's no upgrade.
  18. Toss that kräp, install Linux and be happy. :matte-motes-nerdy:
  19. Darla, again: simple thing like GPU swap is no reason for schlepping the whole rig to the shop. But okay, it's maybe better so they may check if there are other problems as well and if your PSU is strong enough to power the new graphics card. As I said, don't let them sell you any **bleep** below GTX. Tell them you need a gaming card. Once back home surf to Nvidia and install the latest driver. Don't take the long route via Microsoft update, do it directly. Nvidia have a clever site, they will practically guide you through the really simple process to locate and install your specific driver.
  20. Hi Darla, without knowing any specifics of your compi I must say it really sounds like dust/heat issues to me. Dust clogs up your computer, particularly the fans and leads to overheating. The occuring heat slowly kills your machine. Rule of thumb: clean out the case every 6 mth, 3 if you're a smoker. Always have ample air supply around the case, particularly the intakes and exhausts. You know, all those meshes and holes in the computer case aren't there for styling purposes. GT420 isn't a very good GPU neither. AFAIK it was Nvidia's 2nd worst at the time. It's about 4 years old now, was a cheapo and would be no problem to be replaced by something with considerably more Ooomph! Go for GTX series, at least a x60. Just make sure your PSU can deliver enuff of the good juice to power that card. Let's not forget, the GPU is the single most important part of your rig. But for now, yeah, CLEAN THAT CASE!!! Here's a nice link for you that shows how easy it is. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes. All you need are 1 or 2 cans of compressed air, or a leaf blower, or a vacuum cleaner ... no, I'm not talking about your boyfriend Wow, Linus was young and video quality was terrible. This one is much more advanced and silly: And as always: GRRRLPOWER! Don't let any guy get even close to your rig, for 2 reasons: 1) Cleaning is wimmin job! Boys dunno how to clean **bleep** 2) Boys get distracted easily and willl have many "helpful"hints for you and tell you what parts you gotta put into your rig ... and meanwhile they'll forget why you granted them access to your computah in the first place.
  21. Hi Minnie, please copypaste your computer specs, so the clever ppl here in forum can maybe help you. Open your viewer but don't log in. From the log-in screen click Help --> About [your viewer] You should get a window like this: Singularity Viewer (64 bit) 1.8.5 (5617) Jan 28 2014 23:30:38 (Singularity) Release Notes Grid: Second Life Built with GCC version 40405 CPU: Intel® Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz (1197 MHz) Memory: 7980 MB OS Version: Linux 3.14.17-1-MANJARO #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 14 09:39:24 UTC 2014 x86_64 Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 260/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 304.123 Viewer SSE Version: SSE2 libcurl Version: libcurl/7.24.0 OpenSSL/1.0.0g zlib/1.2.6 c-ares/1.7.5 libidn/1.29 J2C Decoder Version: OpenJPEG: 1.5.2 Audio Driver Version: (none) Qt Webkit Version: 4.7.1 (version number hard-coded) Just post that here to this thread. Furthermore conduct a speed test with speedtest.net. Also please tell us about your connection, is it wifi or plugged in. With these infos we can come to some kinda conclusion about the state of things on your side.
  22. You can also enable TP by double click. That's really handy if you can see the place you wanna go on your screen. Just double click that place and SWOOOOOSH!, hello there you are. But be careful, this useful function can be dangerous and did cost some race sailors their wins. One guy navigated on the world map, wanted to set a beacon and accidentally doubleclicked that waypoint. :smileysurprised: Ooopsy! He was looking really stupid as he was catapulted off his boat into a wet grave.

We've all seen fried cards who weren't as old as yours. And of course it's SL giving you the problem; it's the most demanding task for any GPU.
