  1. To make it short: ALL more modern CPUs by Intel and ATi shouldn't have any problems with running SL. A fast dual core is better than a slower quad core. More important, if you're about to upgrade/build a system for SL, is your GPU (nVidia GTX series works best) and ample amount of RAM (at least 4GB, better 6 or 8).
  2. There are many laptops in the Inspiron range, as well as in the XPS range. And "running awesome" can be interpreted differently by anyone as well. Not helpful. Some people are satisfied with very basic graphics, without any atmospheric blissand bells and whistloes and reduced drawing distance. If you want to add some eye candy and maybe shoot the one or other snapshot you gotta have decent powerful graphics. So, let's get into medias res, Steve, shall we? The processor you mentioned is just fine, as almost every modern processor is these days. But as mentioned already, what you need is a dedicated graphics chip, not some lame ass compromising on board graphics solution. It needs its own RAM too, at least 512 MB. And these requirements brings you into the high specceed Inspiron and XPS or even Alienware ranges, when you insist on Dell as your supplier. Other mothers have nice daughters too, but they are equally expensive or crap in other aspects. I tried it with Asus, but what use are the powerful specs when the keys are jumping off the keyboard already after some weeks of SL chat? And then there's the problem of overheating which can cause all sorts of troubles. So you have to buy a seperate cooling stand anyway, which makes your laptop machine even more exypensive. My suggestion: If your old lappy was able to run SL, and you're not on the road all the time - stick with it. Use it for when you're on the road and need to log in from hotel rooms and the like. Instead take your money and buy a nicely specced desktop PC. It's so much nicer, so much better in SL ... and so much cheaper. Don't buy any brand but just go to the friendly little neighborhood PC warehouse and have them build one for you. Good Gigabyte mobo, fast RAM (8 GB or so), powerful power supply, a good GPU (nVidia GTX series, stay away from ATi), and a nice box, big enough to put all the goodies into and with ample amount of cooling fans. Doesn't need to be a gaming rig even, no watercooling or any of the voodoo stuff needed. But a stable workhorse that can take a beating, that's what you want.
  3. Around Blake Sea you'll find 3 private estates, SLNE as already mentioned, Sailors Cove and the United Sailing Sims (USS). Of course renting from them is a bit pricier and you have to set a certain amount of your prim allowance back for navigational use (boats that sail thru your parcel). Purchase of waterfront land, facing protected water, is gerenerally more pricey than land in the middle of a continent. Even in Sansara the prices are quite steep. But in Sansara you'll find many rivers with access to the greater bodies of water, like Sea of Fables or Mare Secundus. But I have to obejct the statement that Sansara and Heterocea have more sailable water than Blake Sea. Blake Sea isn't the biggest body of water in SL, right, but it is connected kinda endlessly. From Blake you can sail all of Nautilus, Bingo Strait, Dire Strait, the Japanese continent down to a certain level and up North to Corsica and Gaeta V. So navigable waters from Blake Sea are much more than anywhere else on the grid. You could also have a look at unconnected maritime estates like Fruit Islands or Costa Rica Sims. They aren't cheap neither but supply ample sailing space.
  4. Most avies are more or less humanoid, at least the account holders are 100% human. And afaik there's like 99.999% of people in the world having a first and a last name. In some cultures it's the other way round, China, for example. Or Iceland where your fathers name automatically becomes your last name. Still we live in a system of family name and individual name. It's simple, it's proven, it works. Why LL decided to stray away from that perfect model, I can only guess. Oh, and I have my guesses, but non of them are very flattering for the Lindens.
  5. Hi Luschious, before derezzing half your household why not just use a sandbox? Many shops alos have rezz spots so you can unpack your new stuff directly on location. Or make use of the NE-corners in Blake Sea sims, which are all rezzable, or other public rezz areas, or or or. There are many rezz spots on the grid. particularly in private estates and RP areas where people need to be able to quickly rezz weapons and other stuff. But please be so kind to tidy up the boxes before you leave.
  6. Du kannst das Objekt nicht nehmern, aber returnen. Keine Ahnung wie das im deutschen Viewer heißt, in englisch ist es "Return". Dann landert der TV in deinem Lost & Found folder.
  7. I can only think of Rozoregalia, although their prim ears with earrings is rather punky than classy.
  8. Let's look back into 2008 for a moment. Yes, homesteads ('open spaces' as they were called back then) indeed used to be "LL's killer product" as Ralph mentioned. LL sold more of those than they could deliver, there were waiting lists and all the stufff. Massive grow, lots of land owners, everything fineand dandy. Really? No, not really. What most people didn't acknowledge was the initial idea of those open spaces. See, LL originally made them as low cost, low usage areas for existing landowners to add some parks, gardens and other decorative land to their existing outfit. But customers used them in a different way. They built rental objects, shopping malls, clubs and all that stuff and used those open spaces just like full sims. What most residents didn't take into account or just ignored was the fact that a homestead has to share 1 server with 3 other sims. Not only did you get only 3750 prims but more importantly the script load is divided through 4 as well. This lead to massive lag throughout the grid. LL in their typically helpless, clumsy way didn't see any other solution than to raise the tier in order to dampen the demand on those sims. I guess they want to avoid the errors of the past and avoid history repeating itself. Of course should LL lower the tier prices, of course they should make land ownership more afforrdable. But residents should be more aware of what they are buiyng into and what they get. And don't have too high, unrealistic expectations.
  9. Yes, of course the high tier fees are bad. But they are not the initial deeal breakers. I was a hobo in SL for almot 4 years before I decided to go premium and buy some land. It's perfectly possible to lead a meaningful and happy second life without owning or renting any land. What I don't get is the empowerment argument: Empowerment comes from within! It's a mindset and doesn't need any material **bleep**. If someone only feels empowered if they own a lot of land it's a sad mindset. I pity those fools. And yes, of course it's perfectly possible to run SL on 15 fps. But it's not pretty. The breaking point is still the old 25 fps we know from the movies. From 25 onwards motion becomes smooth enough not to hurt your eyes and wreck your nerves. 15 fps is nothing LL should take as a measure or as a goal. When my fps goes down to 15 it's either my connection acting up or a bad SL sim. But your personal hardware should be able to run much better framerates. Niche product? Yes and No ... I've read lots of discussions about that point but as long as LL themselves aren't able to decide which path to follow, what they really wanna become, I guess any further discussion is fruitless. But I guess LL wouldn't care one or the other way. If they make enough money they are happy, doesn't matter to them if Philip's original idea flies out the window. Fact is: SL isn't ready for primetime yet. Quite possibly (and hopefully I might add) will never be ready for the mainstream, will never totally succumb to the facebook approach of a wide user base, will never become a consumers market, will never satisfy users on a 10 min/day basis. Right now SL is like most RL hobbies and activities: you get out what you put in. No pain no gain. Invest to earn. I hope those fundamental facts will never change.
  10. I could buy a car for less than the cost of a graphics card capable of delivering all the latest visual bells'n'whistles. No, a decent GPU costs you between 100 - 200 € / US$. So I go through SL without shadows, depth-of-field, etc. Like every one else. Shadows and DOF are for making photos but not for walking around in world. SL has so much more to offer than the countless Facebook games and yet those games have user bases and retention that SL can only dream of. Why? Is it because they're such great games, etc., etc? No, it's because their system requirements are so low they can be enjoyed on fairly low-end computers. Yes. So what? A Ferrari is much faster than a bicycle but costs significantly more. Would you suggest Ferrari to lower their prices so they would sell more? It may not be possible to lower the system requirements but from what I've seen and heard from RL acquaintances, that is the biggest hurdle. Tinkering with the UI is really little more than arranging deckchairs on the Titanic. The UI is an important part of the SL experience, as the V2 disaster has shown us. For instance set a target of a continuous 15 fps Haha, 15 fps is what I would consider serious lag. If LL can crack that people will flood in... which is what all of us want. Do we? Really? I, for my part, couldn't care less. The fact that so many people are not willing to invest in hardware already shows that not SL is wrong for them but they are wrong in SL! In fact I'm happy for everyone leaving SL since it means less lag and less stupidity for the rest of us to suffer from. Conclusion: Let's face it, SL is neither a social network nor a game. It is a virtual world, built and inhabitated by a minority of computer geeks interested in virtual reality, in social experiments, in building new society models. In expressing themselves artistically or trying new business models. In order to get the most out of it a considerable amount of decent hardware is required.
  11. Is the prim located on your land? - In that case it's easy, just return the stupd thing. And then disable building for anyone. If the root is located on their land but encrouching onto yours - shame on them but not much you can do technically. So a bit of diplomacy is needed from your side. If they want a war AR their @$$es.
  12. Finding friends to share your land with is a good idea. The more the betterer. But don't forget to found a group first (cost 100 L) and buy the land for group. The more ppl join in the more land you can buy ... and you get a 20% bonus on group land. Which means when you have like 4 x 512 = 2048 you can buy another 400 m² and no tier fee. Check with your account on the Linden web page and in the land tab of your group info to see how much land you have and how much more you can get without slipping into a higher tier payment.
  13. Hi Rhojen, try rightclicking and Edit it. In Edit you'll find the name of the owner, most probably a neighbour (since you're all living so close together in those n00b ghettos). Ask them to please remove their pet or alter its course so it won't run thru your home.
  14. There is lag and then there is lag. We have to acknowledge that not all lag is the same or is caused by the same basic problems. Of course there is the server side lag, which is mostly due to bad scripts and badly programmed server software. But mostly when I hear ppl complaining about lag it's often the case that they are the only ones with that problem. This is the other lag: client side lag! This is due to weak hardware and bad connections; and if I would suffer from lag all the time, even when I'm alone in an empty sim I wouldn't immediately blame LL or my fellow residents but have a look at my machine specs, its general condition and on my internet connection. Here are some things you can do rather cheaply to get rid of the lag on your side: - Test your connection to the internet. Do some speed and ping teststo SF or Dallas. If results are not as promised in your contract complain with your ISP. - Don't do wireless! Plug into the router. - Laptop? Forget it. Too expensive and in most cases too weak. Don't get me wrong, I love my lappy and never leave the house without it. But when I travel I'm prepared to live with some lag. - Desktop? YAY! Way to go! In a desktop you can upgrade your hardware quite cheaply and bit by bit. - RAM: you can never have enough. It's cheap and the best way to speed up your machine quite substantially. 4GB is minimum, 8 is better. - Graphic card: a nVidia GTX460 is cheap these days and very capable of running an application like SL. Don't go for ATi, they often cause problems. - Maintenance: no clue how to clean your sluggish Windoze? Doesn't matter. Just get a nifty tool like TuneUp Utilities and let it do the daily geekish routine jobs of cleaning your registry, checking your hard drives and other stuff. A 30 day trial period is free. Your machine will be running like on the first day. - Other stuff: kill all running programs while you're logged in world. No office software, no downloads, no torrents, no graphic programs, no browsers shall be open at the same time. No need for all that **bleep**.
