  1. I don't know enough to tell you if your specs will work well or not (I suspect they will), but I can tell you about my ASUS G74S. I am quite pleased with it, and it will 20-30 fps in Ultra using the LL viewer, maybe 12-18 using Firestorm. I got it nearly 2 years ago to replace my "Dell from Hell". CPU: Intel® Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (2195.09 MHz) Memory: 16362 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 560M/PCIe/SSE2

Maximillon Lefavre wrote: You can also try using the preview grid. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preview_Grid#How_do_I_log_in_to_Aditi.3F It should be noted the directions on that page only work with the official SL viewer. Official viewer only? I always use Firestorm on Adati, and never have a bit of trouble with it. Except that Adati sometimes does not work at all for *any* viewer.
  3. I travel a lot, and use hotel wifi to get on. Sometimes its works (about 1/3 of the time flawlessly, 1/3 with moderate lag), and sometimes not, but the abiltiy to stream hi-def wifi is not a particualry good predictor about whether or not SL will run smoothly. I've seen many connections that stream video just fine, but give excessive packet loss when I try using SL, and SL is just not going to run well with packet much over 1%. My daughter used to have a router that delivered 20Mbps download speed, and would lock up my computer tight as a drum if I tried running SL over the wifi connection, it only worked if I plugged in with a wire. Did great for streaming videos to my latptop though. ----------- Currently running 70+ fps on High graphics setting using the LL viewer. Over wifi, with about 0.5% packet loss. (which does have a noticeable impact when I move about, but not too bad) CPU: Intel® Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (2195.09 MHz) Memory: 16362 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 560M/PCIe/SSE2
  4. I don't know what you mean by a "logo" here, but I was able to reproduce my whole shop, *my* logo and all, for a LI of 8. The original had a LI of 52. My first attempts led to higher LI, but after some learning, I was able to make it quite low. I have a friend who got disillusioned about mesh after making some modles using google sketch up. I have never used that tool, but evidently it makes very inefficient meshes, at least with respect to SL. I have the sense from other discussions, but not the hands on experience, that its is very easy to use other modeling tools that use completly inappropriate vertex counts for SL. You can find some good info here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Creation_Portal
  5. I log on using a mobile wireless connection fairly often (Verizon jetpack, but thats not important here). If I stay home with one or two friends, and turn off streaming audio, tighten up my draw distance, and set my graphics preferences to low, I can stay logged into SL for about 50 MByte/hr. But going to moderately busy sims, streaming audio, and using high graphics, more like 300 MByte/hr. The biggest factor for me seems to be how many other avatars are within my draw distance. Watching what I do, but not being *too* careful, I end up using about 12 - 16 GB/month, logging in for 2 or 3 hours a day most days.
  6. The search content preference needs to be set to A also. Just setting the viewer preference to A will not automatically change your search preference. So for full access to A stuff, you set viewer preference, search preference, and marketplace preference.
  7. I have an Nvidea GTX 560M. I get marginally better performance (faster fps) if I turn on anti-aliasing and anisotrpopic filtering in the Nvidia control panel (where I can set them for the specific SL client I am using), and then and turn both settings off in my SL client preferences. I usually use Firestorm, but sometimes use the LL client, so I have application specific settings for each of them in the Nvidea control panel. --------------------------- CPU: Intel® Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (2195.08 MHz) Memory: 16362 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 560M/PCIe/SSE2
  8. You are correct. Not even an option for temporay texture on a Magnum region today. And now that I look carefully, I see the good old double loading of my clothing textures at home when I change what I am wearing.. Sometimes those deployment announcements are a bit hard to follow, I still do not see how it spells out the idea that they were reverting to the previous behavior on the LeTigre sims, although I can see the wording is consistant with that.
  9. ??? My server got switched to SSA/SSB last week (LeTigre), and using FS4.4.2, I can still upload and use temporary textures. I just tried it on a new shirt layer, it worked just fine.
  10. I agree with the others, it sounds a lot like a connection issue. I travel around, and often use public wifi connections. Well, I try to, with very mixed success. Maybe 1/3 of the time wifi works for me just fine, 1/3 it works after a fashion, and 1/3 not at all. The difference for me is in packet loss, you can see how you are doing from the help>about tab, it tells you packet loss down at the bottom. From OP's description, I would guess packet loss in the 20% range. Aslo, 2 GB ram is awfully low. Make sure there are no other programs at all running in the background, that may help a bit. And a lot of people report that the Singularity viewer puts less of a load on the PC, if you can stomach the V1 type interface. It does support RLV.
  11. Will a mesh deformer really help? Most of the mesh clothes I have looked at in wireframe (ctrl-alt-r) are made of meshes that just do not match the SL avatar mesh. So while a mesh deformer might make a rigged item fit in some fixed pose, would it necessarily help hide the mismatch between SL and rigged mesh clothing that makes us need to use alpha masks when we animate? (animate == dance) I use a shape that turns out to be very close to one of the "standard" sizes. And freely edit the shape to try to fit various outfits. It is easy to make a mesh dress that fits my exact shape exactly in a specific pose. It is appallingly difficult to do it when I start to dance. So far, I've only managed to do it for a couple of simplified cases. I find that perhaps 1 in 10 of the time, an outfit works when I dance. Except for 2 brands that will nearly always work. (for my shape, your milage may vary). I suspect that skill and insight to the SL avatar mesh and mesh topography make a much bigger difference than any mesh deformer ever could. Am I missing something?
  12. Here is a tutorial that shows how to rig a horse avartar to the second live bones. Then you would have to find some animations for your animal. Blender would work.
  13. I've tried rezzing a box, taking off my hair and shoes, and adjusting the box till I find my "exact height". Then my AO changes the pose.. You've got to strike a standard pose to get your exact height, just as you do at the RL docs for a checkup. Sadly, SL is silent on what exactly is the standard pose. After much trial and error, I came to the conclusion 15 or 20 % taller than RL. Then I lost interest.
  14. I use the current FireStorm (4.4.2) and sometimes the current SL viewer (3.6.1). In FS, I choose not to use the old-style "pie menu", so in either viewer, if I right click on an object I get a very similar context menu. And I can choose "object profile" to get various details about that object. For either viewer, this works fine for prim attachements on other avatars - hair, skirts, shoes, etc. For FS, but not for the SL viewer, it also works for rigged mesh clothing. For system clothing, the only option is to ask the person wearing it.
  15. Actually, Firestorm lets you change draw distance of the fly with a chat command: dd 60 will set it to 60 meters, dd 128 will set it to 128.
  16. This link to the FireStorm wiki may be of help: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_missing_inventory
  17. Here is a more complete answer, with default Firestorm colors. I put this script into a prim. default { touch_start(integer total_number) { llSay(0, "Everyone can read this."); llInstantMessage( llDetectedKey(0), "Only the person touching the cube hears this."); llOwnerSay("only the owner of the prim can read this."); } } At 19:01, I touched the prim. Then at 19:02, I had my lovely alt touch the prim. Here is what I (Owner) saw, followed by what the alt (someone else) saw.
  18. If it is in green, then its an object talking to the world. If the same object were talking only to you, it would show up in yellow.

I like the explanation in the wiki http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Residents'_privacy_rights, especially the part about printing out the conversations and posting them on utility poles. 20. I use wifi to connect to SL nearly all the time. And my advice is that it works great with the right router. Sadly, I do not know how to specify the "right router". But from experience, there can be wide variation in how well routers work. Some supporting anecdotes: At home, my ISP provides a wifi router as part of the package. That router works very poorly with SL; if I hook up to it, I get >5% packet loss, and a laggy, laggy SL exerience. I connected the ISP router (2WIRE) to a different router (linksys) with an ethernet cable. With the linksys router (but same internet connection), I rarely see packet loss. But wifi is subject to interference, and I do have occasional bouts of packet loss which promplty go away when I plug in with an ethernet cord. I have a pretty good PC and typically get 30 - 150 fps, depending on where I am in SL. At my daughter's house, different ISP on the other side of the country. With her old 2Wire router, SL ran crappy on the windows laptop and fine on the macbook pro. With her brand new Netgear router, both machines run SL flawlessly. In hotels, I always check speedtest.net, and if the DL speed is >~1 Mbps, I find that I can run SL with no packet loss about 1/4 the time, with acceptable packet loss another 1/4 the time, and just too much (> ~3-5%) to be usable for SL the remaining 1/2 the time. I've seen links that test out 10 Mbps DL and stream netflix just fine, but give 30% packet loss for SL. I've seen links with only 0.4 Mbps run SL OK, with no packet loss at all. (lag yes, the low BW does make a difference. Not so much to the fps, but it takes forever for the textures to fill in)
  21. Sometimes I see the "friend is offline" message pop up just as I am pressing return for the final goodnight. If I send a message close enough in time to when they logged off, then I will see "friend is online" pop up, and they stay listed as on-line in my contact list till I restart SL.
  22. necro post, eh? Tnx for saving me the trouble of reading further.
  23. Using the SL viewer, you go to the "advanced" tab on preferenced, and check the box "show grid selection at login". Same for Firestorm. When its checked, you will get a drop down menu on the login screen. Good luck!
  24. I run on an ASUS G74S. 17.3 in, 12 GB machine that cost me about $1400 1.5 years ago. I wanted a moderately high end machine for my motorhome, and had intended to update my desktop at home. But this box works so well, it ended up replacing my desktop. The size of the machine is a significant tradeoff, and would make it unsuitable for a lot of people. It is fat, >5 cm thick, and heavy. The battery only lasts for about 2 hours doing light web browsing, less than an hour with SL running. Much of the thickness is used for the beefy cooling system: The computer does not overheat, but the box is a fairly effective space heater. It runs SL very well. Using LL viewer 3.5.3, I get 25+ fps in ultra graphics mode when in well populated sims. It is significantly slower when I use Firestorm 4.4.0, with ultra graphics I only get around 10 fps the same sims. (I usually turn off shadows and lighting anyway. Too many garish facelights out there, and turning it off gives a big boost to fps). If this box was struck by lightning today, I would likely buy another ASUS tomorrow. ---------------------------------------- help>about SL details: --------------------------------------- Second Life 3.5.3 (276452) May 24 2013 02:06:23 (Second Life Release) Release Notes CPU: Intel® Core i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz (2195.07 MHz) Memory: 16362 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 560M/PCIe/SSE2 Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.17.0012.9616 OpenGL Version: 4.2.0 libcurl Version: libcurl/7.21.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8q zlib/1.2.5 c-ares/1.7.1 J2C Decoder Version: KDU v7.0 Audio Driver Version: FMOD Ex 4.44.12 Qt Webkit Version: 4.7.1 (version number hard-coded) Voice Server Version: Not Connected Built with MSVC version 1600
  25. Here is a link to a recent blog posting about server side baking. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/Faster-Avatar-Loading-on-the-Horizon/ba-p/2026857 System clothing will work fine after the new servers are started, but you will need a compatible viewer to see it. Otherwise just grayness.
