  1. This was top tier immediately with the people who ironically took the bait in a thread about sarcasm. 10/10
  2. Don’t bring up the different furry avatar styles. SL is host to a pretty wide range of furry artistic types, on the whole scale from actual animals to near human, very cartoony to hyper realistic, everything in between and outliers that don’t even sit on the scale. But there’s definitely a notable divide between more classic and cartoony styled avatars and these very describable as smooth and modern furry avatars. They generally avoid eachother for reasons outside of just artistic preference, and I’ve seen a few discussions on it go haywire. I think everyone is content with simply liking different styles until someone starts bringing up positive/negative comparisons between them at which point people vehemently defend their choice of style and denigrate their compatriots of different styles.
  3. Should’ve fallen into the on again off again trend years ago. I think this is account number 7 or something? I play in sporadic bursts over the course of years. At some point I’ll get bored of SL again, and instead of returning to this account after years, I’ll make a new one. Just as what created this one. The only reason I even have this account still is because the email I used is a moderately important email of mine so i hopped right back into it after a year hiatus a while back. I think if I still had a 2008 join date it would be perceived poorly by others. Because I barely played back then, I have no attachment to that era of sl. Other people from that time would expect me to know about it, and as would newer users. But the same applies if I still had my account from 2013, or 2016. So this works, not brand new but with what little I now about sl from simply not playing it consistently, I’d prefer to be in this kinda gray area where people don’t ask me about things and I’m not expected to know about anything. But I’m also not perceived as a clueless noob, even if I might as well be.
  4. It’s because you plugged your monitor into your GPU. Nothing is using the GPU if you have your primary display plugged into the motherboard, it was aLL running on the igpu. HD4600 doesn’t have switchable passthrough like that.
  5. Part of some CDs I picked up recently, Hed Sessions
  6. Solid choice specs wise, current, will handle sl no issues. I would not buy a prebuilt dell, I would look for something with similar specs from a mainstream SI that makes normal pcs instead of dells habit of super proprietary stuff. By the name of that psu I’m guessing this is an Alienware? They’re not what they used to be. It’s worth paying a little bit more to get a normal pc. Something with standard hardware, a regular case, proper cooling, a mostly untouched windows install, etc. I would spec up something with NZXT if you want something fancy. https://nzxt.com/product/player-two Or there’s plenty of SI’s like Skytech who do stuff like this. https://skytechgaming.com/product-category/pre-built-pcs/ Amongst many others. There’s a huge thing about Alienware if you want to dig into it, but the tldr is they’re kinda coasting on being a recognizable name, not really doing a whole lot to make a nice product. Paper specs are what sells. And they’ll put anything else right into the dumpster to make the paper specs look good. Even if that means barely cooling the system so it thermal throttles all the time. Filling the OS with bloatware. Making sure most of the modular components are proprietary, not user serviceable, and not replaceable with normal parts.
  7. Ages ago I used to regularly encounter two people named jizzbigsby and zippdingus and to this day those names are funny to me..
  8. another CD acquired, just the best dance music
  9. mountain bike best purchase ever, i keep it on my porch and can just hop on it and vanish into the local hills
  10. How mini of a mini pc are you talking? Just a conventional tower but smaller like mini ITX stuff? Half height? Or are you looking at something the size of a book? The smaller you go the less hardware options you'll have. Something like a brick sized mini PC will be effectively a gaming laptop in terms of hardware and will not get you the kind of performance youre looking for. But there are things like a half height RTX 4060 that exists which allows for a half height conventional desktop, think your average dell optiplex office pc as a size reference for a half height system. And then theres some decently compact stuff that can be done with the mini itx form factor but anything smaller than an ITX tower will be entirely DIY, nobody is really making super compact itx prebuilts because theyre not user freindly at all.
  11. Also in my adventuring around the world map view to find bits of land for sale, i came across cool old stuff i wasnt aware of, the SS Galaxy read into it and this is from 2007 and its super cool I wasnt around for this era of the game but its pretty nuts that theres a like, 2300ft long cruise ship that takes 3 entire regions just hanging out in the ocean, love discovering cool old stuff like this
  12. Finally bought a piece of mainland. Its actually right next to the bear infohub which is kinda neat. Wanted a roadside wedge of space for an L shaped kinda thing and this fit the bill not fancy at all but it doesnt need to be, its just a place to sit and yell i am really bad at working with prims, it reminds me of roblox except without the incremental snapping and collision my favorite part are these incredibly low resolution plants i paid too many L$ for
  13. I won’t, I’ll just leave and encourage others to avoid the place.
  14. It’s due to the large network of underground mole dwellings you’re rendering underneath the terrain mesh.
  15. The difference is vrchat uses unity and it will always run kinda bad. However that engine choice way better utilizes modern hardware, even if it’s not perfect, it’s doing a lot more under the hood than sl is. And the biggest part for that is that it’s easier for them to implement assorted fixes to optimize the game better for the content in it. For what VRchat is doing on a technical level, it is running exceedingly well on the average users hardware. Smooth and simple 3D models aside, realtime body and facial tracking with model deformation and stretch and all that isn’t easy to pull off and have it run well. It’s why they counteract that aspect of it with otherwise fairly low detail environments, models and textures. You can’t exactly stare at the pores and real time lighting and material effects on your vrchat avatar like you can in secondlife. But that is why it kinda looks like an Xbox 360 game to balance that out. TLDR for what it is, its optimized very well, and they can do more they only recently added the impostors style avatar rendering for crowds that SL has had for years, because their mobile app version ran bad without it Non optimized user created content is a problem that’s difficult to manage, but the biggest issue for SL is that this game doesn’t utilize hardware well enough to brute force through it. What’s on our screens in SL is not technologically impressive, it just isn’t able to process it all. My cpu has 1 core pegged to the ceiling trying to manage the lighting and geometry while my GPU twiddles its thumbs filling all 16gb of vram with textures it can only compress so far. VRchat on unity is multithreaded, lighting on it means nothing, and it scales with core count. The GPU is focusing on its job of actually rendering frames since it’s not being held back waiting for the CPU. The real limitation there is geometry which is just outright demanding as all hell for that game. Unoptimized content doesn’t help, but it’s nowhere near as much of an issue in terms of texture use or prop item complexity. And really isn’t the core issue on either game. In vrchat the issue for user created content is model complexity, since all of that has to move and stretch and deform rapidly and reactively, versus sl and its static animations which are far easier to compute. Two different games with two different performance related problems to overcome.
  16. I thought this was an old post for a second, I wouldn’t even consider an 11900k now unless you’re getting it secondhand for very cheap. Which is a valid option, Z590 boards are fairly current in terms of tech and the 11900k is a great performer but only if those two things are priced very well. Otherwise, intel is on the 14900k at this point, 3 generations into a socket. I wouldn’t look at lga 1200 if you’re buying new, look at lga 1700 options instead. Besides the point, cpu choice barely matters for SL at all in terms of brand or chipset or whatever, it’s down to the potential performance of the individual processors. The amd thing with SL was more to do with video cards and was based on some OpenGL bugs from now ~10-15 years ago. It’s not relevant today at all. The 5800x is in a similar spot but is a little more reasonable to buy new. Socket AM4 is now dead, no further generations will be on it, same as intels lga 1200 for the 11900k. As such it’s pretty cheap, and the 5800x performs well, especially in multicore. It will be behind the 11900k slightly in single core which is more important for sl, but as mentioned, the 11900k shouldn’t be considered unless you’re buying used. If you compare the 5800x to a more relevant previous generation intel option you can still get new, it is more like the 12900k to reference, and that is better than the 5800x but not by a whole lot. AMD is now using AM5 so the 7800x or 7700x would be contemporary choices on the amd side of things. If those are your two options and you have no other options for whatever reason, it will be more important to look at the motherboards. A decent intel Z590 board will have usb type c, pcie 4.0, resizable bar, generally just a lot of decent features. Just the same higher end X570 am4 boards for amd will have a lot of those features, it’s just X570 is far less common to see in general, if you’re buying a prebuilt with a 5800x it’s almost certainly B550, which just has less going on. Something with a 5800x3D is a little different and is more likely to have a higher end motherboard. Tldr the cpu doesn’t matter all that much in terms of make. It’s about raw performance, and platform/board features. Look for newer stuff first, as both suggestions are older generations by a few years.
  17. I’m good with just about anything, we’re all different people socially, and some people do weird things but that’s just normal to them and if the intention is innocent then I’ll deal with things I don’t like. Like excessive emojis, laughing after everything, emotes all the god damn time, spacing out messages like this as if there’s rapidly fading chat bubbles like habbo hotel or something idk But the one thing I absolutely steer away from is anyone who starts with a minimal DM, sudden notification, new chat tab, “hi”. Immediate red flags. Cut that out, this is a social world, if you can’t say it in open chat either you have something suspicious to say, or the space itself sucks because it doesn’t encourage open chat. That too, I don’t like places where they encourage people to keep small conversations to private chat. That’s just encouraging the whole “room of silent statues” thing and that’s awful and I want nothing to do with that vibe. I basically never use DMs unless its to my partner about something irl that’s semi private and shouldn’t be shared publicly.
  18. finding cool places to listen the exact wrong music for the type of dance animation playing in the background of this kinda slow dance we were listening to SF2UK by Bassbin Twins which was not fitting at all but was funny
  19. Furzona comes to mind. I think it’s M rated and technically has rules which allow non sexual nudity but the status quo there is to not do that and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything explicit there.
  20. Coming back to this months later to see this post. Using 4.6 is different than utilizing 4.6, most openGL titles are forwards compatible, meaning they can real time run translation of older features to newer openGL versions without issues. SL as far as I’m aware is using something like openGL 4.2 in terms of its feature set but that really doesn’t matter since it’s also technically running 4.6 as well. OpenGL is weird It will also run on older video cards that only support down to think openGL 2.1, GeForce6 series from 2004, that will still play sl. Because it’s still somewhat backwards compatible too. So SL is more like a OpenGL 4.2 game, where you can technically use 4.6 but not all the features of 4.6 are built in, and it can run on older OpenGL versions but it disables some graphical qualities. I’m pretty sure if you attempted to turn on PBR features on something older than the nvidia 400 series it wouldn’t actually work, but I haven’t tried that so I’m not sure. “What card do you have” might as well be all of them, close to 80 different gpus in total, at least 30 I’ve played SL with at one point or another, including more modern cards though not a whole lot super high end. But I can confidently compare current midrange like the A770, 3060ti, 6600xt. I need to get a 4000 series nvidia card and a 7000 series amd card at some point for reference. But I’ve played this game on everything from low end igpus to a 3070ti and my current GPU of choice, the A770 (for the 16gb of vram). And everything in between, I regularly used an R9 Nano for a while, Vega 56, GTX 1080, first gen titan and titan x pascal, a GTX 680 and 560ti, and even some weird stuff like a pair of s3 chrome 5400ew’s in multichrome, which shouldn’t even work with SL but they support openGL 4.2 and even worked in multichrome since via/s3’s multi GPU thing is a lot different than crossfire or SLI. I mean it still sucked, two low end gpus from 2011 isn’t going to amaze, but I’m probably the only person here who has done that.
  21. Replika was neat super early on, I remember briefly using it in 2017/2018 when it was new. And it was just a really advanced chatbot relative to the time. Now AI for uses like that can do a lot more, and they decided to use it for pocket waifus for whatever reason, I guess sex does sell after all. I will say for what it does, a lot of people really like it for that. It is a chat AI that has the ability to orient itself as a romantic partner, which is something there really aren’t alternative products for. That may be of some use for SL. Though I think a more general purpose AI would be better for your average SL bot that kinda acts like a person. Ive thought about putting together a system for AI simulation and I really do wonder if it would be able to play SL like a person.
  22. And all of them cost too much money. Every time I see some of the bodies sold it’s questionable why they’re so expensive when the whole idea is to get people to buy into a closed ecosystem. The reason game consoles are so cheap relative to their hardware is because they want you to buy games. Games are extremely cheap products or if digital, pure profit. So I always imagined the idea behind bodies was to make a cheap, feature rich body, and then that ties people in to spend money on the clothes and other accessories. Yet for some reason the bodies are the most expensive part by a lot.
  23. SL, toxic? Have you ever played counter strike? Or like, Halo 3 in its prime on the Xbox 360? That game taught me slurs I didn’t even know were slurs. SL is a relatively chill community overall, though there will always be mega nerds who live for and breathe exclusively their own online farts. Just ignore them, move on. Some people find a lot of enjoyment in getting super into all the details and possibilities of this virtual world, many people just like to stand around and chat. And there’s everything in between. Play the game the way you like. If you don’t enjoy it as much, you might just not enjoy it as much, simple as that. Find things you genuinely enjoy, because forcing yourself to do something you don’t enjoy is harmful.
  24. This, is a very big one. Sure it’s super cool to look at a limitless virtual world and to your partner go “I can probably tap that in all 3 dimensions if you’re down” and then run through a virtual bucket list of online debauchery never before seen by mankind. And at the end you kinda look back like alright, that was cool, but if we can do that, do you want to try making a boat?
