  1. The last thing in the world I would call the Abrahamic mythology is "Niche". There's plenty of church groups and religious groups in SL, maybe try searching for and speaking to some of those?
  2. Must be to do with that privacy policy change we all protested about months ago (Linden Gate), the one that ended up with a "camera" in every sim.
  3. How is everyone feeling now LL has moved to a advertisement based financial model, sims are free but we have to deal with 30 second ads every time we want to tp somewhere, thoughts?
  4. There's quite a bit backed up, I was just looking through the backup from later in 2010 and im quite a few pages into the general chat and most post pages are backed up and working. I always find it fascinating going back through old forums like this, especially regarding SL. Its interesting seeing some of the things we worried about back then regarding SL and its current (for the time) tech. I had a look through a 2011 backup and found a post regarding the JLU harvesting peoples IP addresses. https://web.archive.org/web/20110919054333/http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/63339-jlu-harvesting-ip-addresses.html I can't say im surprised that these groups turned out the way they did, I remember meeting some of them back in the day. The ones I met seemed okay, friendly enough etc. But most groups from back then that I have heard updates on over the years, always seem to turn out nefarious in some way.
  5. Okay, let's have less of the judgemental attitude on why I do what I do. Im asking for help here, not to be mocked. I run the firewall because why not, having a firewall is better than no firewall, and it doesn't matter anyway because even without the firewall the issue still persists. And I have had no other issues on any software at all from running the firewall and haven't had for years. As for cache, im aware, but in the spirit of trying everything, I tried that. A lot of weird issues that don't seem related, have been fixed by me clearing the cache in the past. That's the terminal command I tried, including running it a second time as an administrator just for the sake of covering bases. I got the prompt to give access to the mic and it didn't fix anything so ticked it off the list. Both are set to default, as I said, voice works locally for me, so activity shows up on the indicator. Other people can't hear me and I can't hear them or see their voice dot. I also tried every other device in the list for the sake of covering bases. Discord is the only other thing I use voice on, no issues on there. No, AirPods are not connected. I don't particularly want to install further viewers. Especially ones I have never heard of before, from a site I have never seen before. No offence. No, I definitely do NOT have MacKeeper on my Mac.
  6. Is it not backed up on the wayback? What was the web address, I remember it existing but I wasn't really a forumite at that point.
  7. Does anyone remember the green lantern corp? I remember they were pretty active during the PN griefing days and considered themselves as a sort of anti griefing police force. Whatever happened to them? Obviously they must have disbanded many years ago, any ex members or in the know peeps in the forum that want to give us a history lesson?
  8. So, has anyone on a Mac managed to figure out the issue of voice? I am currently using Mac OS Ventura, on a 16" Intel MBP from 2020 and I am still having the issue where the viewer will display my voice dot, and let me speak. However, no one can hear me and I can't see anyone else's voice dot. So far I have tried the following various solutions: Clear all cache and relog Reset voice Reset voice and relog Turn voice off, relog, turn voice on Reset the Mac microphone permissions via the terminal and re grant them when logging back in Same as 5 but turning voice off first and back on when logging in The solution given on the Jira for this issue, didn't work Checking in security and privacy, unticking and re ticking Removing SL Voice and Viewer from the firewall and re adding them Turning the firewall off entirely PRAM and VRAM reset Accessibility settings check Changing input output devices Restart the machine Completely uninstall and reinstall the latest version of the FS and LL viewer Connecting external mic and speakers on the off chance another device might work Im not sure what else to try or how to fix this. I can talk, but it appears to be only local as no one can hear me, and I can't hear them or see their voice dots. Did anyone finally figure out this issue? Or is this yet another issue that LL just hasn't fixed?
  9. Surely you could achieve the same effect though by doing one of the following. Either.. Using the key parameter to differentiate message headers. Or, send the message as a CSV, split with a list and have the first entry as your message header. Both would allow you to isolate functionality for different messages. In terms of the plug in listener script, that I get as that's how I generally write systems. I have one script that listens and then delegates to other scripts. But sending onto a channel to be picked up by another script in the hud, when you can just link message, seems weird when there's a plethora of other ways that will let you isolate functionality. Unless you have a specific functionality you are wanting to isolate that the above methods won't work for? If so, could you share? I am genuinely curious, purely as if there is a legitimate use case over linked messages, im curious to hear it as its not something I would usually do.
  10. Most cases are scripts in another link, but there's one or two cases where it isn't. I just don't see the advantage of using a say over a linked message to send data between scripts. Unless the original coder of this system didn't know linked messages existed. Its interesting to know linked messages have been here since at least 2003, really makes me wonder why the original coder chose to do this as it just seems unnecessary.
  11. Many years ago when I joined in 2007, we used to play around with this combat system. Very basic, used random rolls each time you attack for levelling with a float number reducing each time to make levelling harder. A few years after this, I managed to obtain the source code and since then the system has just sat in my inventory all this time. A few days ago, I was thinking back to the fun we had back then and decided that I wanted to actually study the code, see how the system worked and re create it with modern coding and techniques. Not for use anywhere, just one of those nerdy scripted projects we sometimes undertake for fun. Upon read the code, there are some weird things going on that, in the last 16 years of coding in SL, are not practices I have seen used like this before. Or I have, and I have forgotten about it. One of them is how damage is received and dealt within the system. It works like this.. Object collides with opponent and sends a message on a channel to the hud -> A script inside the hud picks up the message, checks the encryption -> Then, rather than use a linked message, the system says a new message onto a channel, to be picked up through the listen event, of another script, in the same link. And then, damage is applied to the players health value. Was there a point when llMessageLinked wasn't a thing and the only way to transfer information between scripts was to say the information on a channel to be picked up by another script? This method is used throughout the system for things such as the health bar, mana bar etc etc. Interestingly, linked messages are used in the system, but I think they were added later. The feeling I get reading through this code is that this system is a modification of a much older system from pre 2007, that was scripted into at the time, to create the system we ended up using. I know that certain link functions weren't around at certain points so figure at some point, link messaging must not have been a thing either. So, that was either before I joined in 2007, as I started learning to script about six months after I joined. Or, was like that when I joined, but I have forgotten. Can any history buffs help fill the details?
  12. We have principles? I didn't get the memo, can someone send the memo?
  13. Some feedback for the new character design panel More hair needed, there is currently no style that is just basic long and flowing. Would love to be able to edit makeup, basic shape options, pick a default AO etc. Accessories like sunglasses, hats etc There should be an "advanced mode" that introduces people to some of these concepts, such as shape manipulation.
  14. Unless you are desperate for a laptop, ignore laptops, they are portable sure, but don't have the longevity and upgradability that home pcs do. And they cost more. Secondly, I just bought myself a pretty okay gaming rig for around idk 1800ish in your money, which included the company I was dealing with building it for me, which should last me quite some time. You don't need the latest or greatest tech in every single regards. My setup is as follows: Rizen 5600x processor 12GB 6700XT Radeon graphics 32gb DDR4 3600 1TB WD Black M.2 drive 650W PSU Alpenfohn cooler 120mm Phanteks G300-A case Gigabyte B550 mobo Wireless card of some description I have been able to run any game, can play SL on max, no issues.
  15. Can't say iv ever had my inventory sync on beta grid, I figured it was just like that as default.
  16. Tbh I only ever really buy something when I see something I like, iv never been one for just buying something because it's on discount, so this time of year doesn't really fuss me too much. Having said that, maybe you should list the stores in order of importance and plan a whole day of Black Friday shopping, maybe put the least important first and work your way towards the more exciting stores? Make a whole adventure out of it, maybe every other store you have to type "Black Friday" into search and pick a random shop and tp there to see if you discover anything new.
  17. In that situation sure, I didn't think about that. But I doubt they are going to do it, there will be a reason why they did it this way, in fact @Patch Linden you got any idea why the inventory was always kept separate and not synced? Prolly a better person to answer this question.
  18. If LL didn't make any money then SL wouldn't still be here. As for the website, and you say you have played for a long time, maybe you should check out the wayback machine and look at the SL website from 2005 and then compare it to the website today, I think its quite modern really and does the job its meant to do. Does that mean there aren't things that can be improved? Of course not, there is definitely a few design choices that could fixed. But overall? It's pretty good really. I would like to see a more modernised and streamlined wiki, and everything contained in one website, instead of spread across multiple ones. But that's just a personal preference, not a commentary on how well the setup works. It's coming, there was a preview as others have stated. They did bin the project at one point and the decided to take it in a different direction. Originally it was supposed to be a text based client with inventory, notification etc functions and that idea was scrapped in favour of a full 3D client. Given the beast that is SL, the complexity of the world and the creations found within. Im guessing that this isn't a simple project that can be put together in a couple of months. You can't compare mobile gaming to running SL on a smartphone, that's like comparing water to fire, two completely different things. Games made for a smartphone are specifically optimised for those devices, SL doesn't allow LL that level of luxury. So instead, they have to figure out how to conform SL, as it currently stands, to smartphone standards. Even Lumia (I think was the name), for all its attempts at a 3D experience was limited in what it could do/display. This I agree with, the current Senra avatars aren't amazing. To do it properly they need a whole range of decently made base bodies, with a whole character creation suite when you first register. Not the dumpy, square play dough puppets they have with the current two bodies. And, built into the viewer, there should be a panel that allows people to see their avatar and swap in and out clothing for the Senra body, much like you would on a standard game. And yes, I know, SL isn't a "game", but sometimes its good to take inspiration from games, especially in this way, as it will be more familiar for people than just having the current inventory system. That's because it's a whole different, unconnected system. Personally I find there is actually a little nostalgic joy to be had with the beta grid and its historical inventories, especially when you use the beta grids search feature and it lists long dead communities that you used to be part of. The beta grid IMO really isn't for your current inventory, it's more for you to upload your new creations and test them out, or test out new and upcoming features. There isn't any need really for your current inventory on the beta grid, unless there is something specific that you need to test out your new creation, and as you said, you can submit a ticket for that. Could they automate the process each time you log in to update your inventory? Sure, but then that might wipe out current beta inventories that have been built up, by developers, for the purposes of testing various things. It really isn't as clear cut at you think it is. You sure we are looking at the same website here, cos this looks utterly awful: https://gyazo.com/b91f2fadb5458d6210a6ea2ff446d40e Says the 130431415135th person for the 320570235780235th time, and yet, its still going strong.
  19. Are we supposed to make our own alpha layers? Finally got something that looks half okay and this is the issue I face with the clothing, specifically the hoodie, currently wearing shape 1. Have tried modifying the shape in all kinds of ways, the only thing that gets rid of some of it is to set the muscle mass to 0. But, for a newbie to have to start making their own alpha layers? This needs fixing if it's not just me being a pleb. Honestly, I was hoping for a decent mesh body setup, something that could work as a good replacement to the current body monopoly in SL. I have to say I'm disappointed, the model looks like an amateur with less than a years experience created it.
  20. All well and good if you weren't commenting ON the provided body shape there.
  21. Helga work out video: https://gyazo.com/e03609354d76b39e2e615501052dacf0
  22. Why the female body and shape make me look like a action man doll in a dress. I look like i could mother two twins and wrangle home a hog for lunch.
