  1. Wearing a prim and standing in the middle of a building while trying to resize it to match the footprint and not getting banned for grief is SL culture. If store owners gave footprints, this core part of the experience would be lost forever and SL would die as prims would finally have no purpose at all.
  2. 100% this. Our animation system could charitably be described as "basic" or perhaps "primitive" being as this is SL. What we have is the bare minimum and hasn't been updated ever, there is no simpler animation system than the one we have. It is quite literally the very simplest option one step ahead of nothing at all. And not just for the pixel bumping, although that does present a good test case for having two avatars of different sizes interacting with each other. We can't even keep our own arms outside our own bodies or our feet on the ground. We can't have couple animations of even the simplest and most plain without kludging things close enough and squinting. Getting two arbitrary avatars to hold hands in a predictable way is simply impossible. We can't even sit next to each other without scripted per avatar controls to nudge things around, tongue at the right angle. What we have wasn't acceptable 19 years ago, in 2022, it's a joke and represents a huge blind spot to the powers that be. This is what @Philip Linden should be focusing on, not facial expressions. 🤬

  4. Pegging the money to some natural "precious" elemental resource is a really bad idea. You end up with an economy who's stability depends on digging gold out of one hole only to store it safely in another and that stability is entirely dependent on it being a steady accumulative process. Someone suddenly finds a lot of gold, and we're all broke ... and the moment someone captures a single asteroid, the entire economy crashes and they're our gods now. (asteroid capture is very doable with current technology, it's impractical due to the expense .. but when the prize is a rock that gives you control over the bulk of a national or global economy, it's suddenly worth it .. even if everyone else ends up living under that rock. Right now the prize is abundance that crashes commodity prices, which isn't so lucrative to the money motivated)
  5. Terminal velocity is just an equilibrium state, you're falling as fast as the air resistance will allow. Terminal stopping is what gets ya. If you bore a hole right though the earth (and stopped it filling up with air or rocks), you could jump in one end, accelerate to the core, whizz through it, slow down on the way up and gently step off at the other end. There's a lot of reasons why making the hole would be impossible, but we're not worrying about that here If it could be done, it would be stupid fast and safety would be the least of the technical challenges involved.
  6. Don't presume they deliberately made the distinction that L$ is a token for purely external or regulatory reasons. If you lose your account, your tokens are gone with it. It is a simile, nothing more. Money is a tightly defined and regulated thing.
  7. For plenty of SL users, it is their livelihood. LL like to cite the big winners making bank, but the vast bulk of SL's creator community are on the poverty line. Policy and direction are very important.
  8. That's how SL is. The L$ is not money. Once you have L$ the only difference between them and gems in candy crush is you can trade them with other players for things or actual money.
  9. If I do something for me, that's for me, whatever that is .. Not going to hold back doing the thing that I clearly enjoy because I wouldn't be comfortable doing it for someone else, in front of someone else, or having someone else do it to me. It's not hypocritical as those scenarios are all entirely different things.

If we ever meet aliens this is what they will tell each other about us .. mostly harmless, but they really do go all in on the worst ideas. To hit yourself is human. Be kind to your human, don't tell them exactly how it could be worse.
  11. People think they have the one true faith whatever their faith, that's kind of the point. I mean, if someone is going to all the trouble of having a faith and sitting on the fence, probably a pretty huge sign it's time for a little introspection.
  12. SL's early economy was speculators and day traders playing the market. Taking the wind out of those sales also popped the hype bubble and the media moved on looking for the next moon pony.
  13. Eeeeeeehhhhhh .. There isn't really blood and gore in wow, it's very cartoonish and the game is more story driven and technical, like don't stand in fire and don't pull everything all at once, if you can do that you're already better than half the people playing. As for actually needing to play .. you kinda do, but you also kinda don't .. I spend far more time goofing off fishing and chatting atm than actual game stuff I'm supposed to doing ...
  14. Buzzwords. Make your thing have all the buzzwords then everyone will talk about it more and we can all get rich. Wrap all the buzzwords up in a new buzzword "the metaverse" .. KA-CHING ! // Does it matter than you can't define a metaverse or explain how it will work on a technical basis, or that 90% of the claims are just pure fiction? Nope! Just pretend your on the bridge of some space ship and techno waffle till someone with more money than sense gives you a wodge of cash. What's all this good for? CIte everything. Every single problem plaguing mankind can be solved by your buzzword bingo card. How? Magic, if you don't know then you're just a dum dum. Insert money and we can ride this hype to the moooooon! Like VR .. good for literally everything! .. Actually good for inducing motion sickness and gesturbating with teens in VRChat. But never mind that, we have a new hype bubble, get in early and you can short cut to being rich and important.

SL isn't growing because there is only a niche of people willing to sink the time and effort into something like SL when they could be consuming literally any other media and not have to "make their own fun". Toss in the high price of a socially acceptable avatar and needing to navigate a dozen different 3rd party solutions and software interfaces. I want to do something online with lots of other people, play house, dress up and have fun - Go play Final Fantasy, or WoW, or both. You will have stuff to do all day every day for years, meet an orders of magnitude more people, spend less money, and still be able to mess about playing barbie or RP. The time cost required to have a meaningful Second Life is a high barrier to entry.

We have yet to see a single cohesive outline of how anything "web3" will benefit SL as it stands, improve the product offering, increase usability or accessibility, increase value, membership, growth, stability and so on. It's all .. SL has L$, that should be a crypto coin .. SL has land and stuff, that's like NFTs.. but when asked WHY all we get is attacked for being "too dumb" to get it. The SL economy, as it stands today, has more transaction volume than bitcoin (1), which is struggling under it's own weight and consuming a small countries amount of electricity (2). So where would the value proposition be for SL users? Where would all the nodes go, who would run them, is it really in anyone's interest to have a speculative money rollercoaster as the basis for our day to day virtual shopping? Would you be happy with massive transaction lag, or needing to shop via a secondary token that's then added the the master block chain in batches? How is buying a dress for a dollar and then finding out later in the day you just spent or lost a fortune going to feel? What is that going to do the general economy? (if it's anything like actual crypto coins, then we wont be spending, we will be HODLing for our lives). But what if it was a stable coin that didn't have value fluctuations .. so .. we just get transaction lag and the real possibility it all goes up in smoke over night because it turns out "stablecoins" are everything but (3). Virtual land as an NFT makes even less sense .. Oh look, your land is now on the block chain and in your crypto wallet you can trade it!! .. Ok, but what happens if you want to subdivide or add more land to that land? You have to mess about with a lot of technical back and forth and incur fees at every step of the process. What happens if the fees aren't stable in price and can wildly fluctuate depending on demand like ETH's gas fees (4) and on and on and on ... How does any of this help SL users do anything we can already do quickly, easily and for predictable sums of money. In short, provide benefit for the actual people who actually use SL. I'm sure it would be great fun for speculators, but then no one is playing SL anymore. BUT MUH METAVERSE ... Oh shut up.
  17. RLVa paints with a very broad brush, there is a lot of general utility in there too. Specifically for adulty toys, creators do tend (for the most part) to stick with stuff that contextually make sense. For example, some lockable mittens that limit your ability to touch objects, or maybe rummage in your pockets (inventory). Communication is always important, if someone does anything you're not up for, that's just generally not OK. That said .. force stripping has been pretty much trash since we all moved to mesh. It was designed back when clothing items we're attached to related and predictable body parts .. shoes on feet, hair on head, etc .. Now with everything being rigged, it's pot luck and nothing brings a smutty moment to a close faster than accidently detaching a partners entire body. If the heat of the moment comes with some unwanted bonus panic, that's not a great moment! Run away! I would be very interested to talk to you privately about what kinds of things we could do from a viewer perspective to ease the paranoia and improve accessibility. The whole point is it's supposed to be fun. We go to a lot of trouble making sure RLVa commands don't come with unintended or unexpected consequences and respects you privacy. There are a number of things that are considered sacrosanct, the contents of your IMs and Money are big ones.

Experiences just allow a number of scripted permissions to be auto granted, they actually make creating a cohesive "experience" on a region with many interactive elements far easier and predictable. The HUGE WARNING about experiences is dumb and overkill. There are pretty much 2 use cases, the first being far more prevalent and practical. Teleporting avatars about without needing them to poke menus or sit on things - You walk into a doorway, and poof, you're magically transported to the other side of the doorway, wherever that happens to be on the region. This is actually really good for combating lag and for all intents and purposes, the only part of experiences you're likely to see. Contextual temporary attachments. Pretty rare in actual use. Is this region infested with zombies? Do you need a sword to smack them? SHAZAM!! Now you do! The reality is sadly far more mundane .. did you sit on a chair and pick the "drink coffee" animation? Does that mean you need a coffee cup .. shazm, woo.. look, it went away when you picked something else .. yaaaaaaay. Saved you messing about with inventory and looking like a weirdo without a coffee cup though didn't it. The potential for "abuse" has been broadly oversold .. actual evil is possible with anything scripted, and it's a lot of work to really pull off. Is that amount of work worth getting reported and banned .. from SL .. nope. RLV can do a lot more, but it can only operate from objects you attach to yourself. It is easy to switch off or just not turn on in the first place. While the initial premise of RLV was and still is for more "realistic" adulting toys, in developing RLVa we have always tried to keep things sane and useful for other purposes too. The primary use cases for RLVa in scripted objects is "this important thing I have, I would like it not to get detached, ever". The CTS wardrobe . clicky on a website, oh look, now im wearing that thing. How cool. Force sitting is a distant 3rd and only tends to get used in adult context "i'm to lazy to ask you to sit on the thing". Everything else ends up being very contextual and rarely seen outside of those specific situations, there is a lot of adult and kink related uses, but plenty of entirely mundane utility ones too. Generally speaking, it should be fun and failing that, useful.
