  1. Definitely 16GB. I was just at London City, and with 8GB, I reached thrashing, where the viewer was swapping out to disk. Then the viewer stalled out and disconnected. I need to upgrade, and soon.
  2. Correct. It's a tough lesson for designers. If you can't deliver "instant, instant, instant, everything at the push of one button and zero learning curve", the next acceptable step down is "the user never gets stuck". The first system where this was really thought through was the original Macintosh computer. Not getting the user stuck, 1984 edition. The original Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines, although graphically dated, are still worth reading.
  3. Useful reading on that: "How Discord Won". It's an analysis of what Discord did right vs. the less successful competition: They did so by making the experience 10x better: Discord requires nearly no setup. Starting a server on Discord takes two clicks. Creating channels is two clicks. It works instantly and all the time. Discord is free. It is easy to switch to Discord. Inviting people is two clicks and a paste. Joining a server (once you have an account) is two clicks. It is so simple you don’t even think about it. Non-core features like emoji support, reactions, bots, integrations, video calls, and screen-sharing all work as well as you could ask. Big community servers for games, fanbases, organizations, hobbies, and more. I've made the point before that others are catching up to SL in the 3D world space. It's worth realizing that SL is also a player in the text/audio chat and group space, and other are way ahead there.
  4. This message brought to you from Caledon Oxbridge University in Second Life. In-world employment is for fun; you can't make much money that way. It's not like being a YouTube influencer. If you're lucky you might be able to pay your Second Life expenses. Since this is a 3D visual world, there isn't much use of text-heavy content. Content creators in SL make clothing, buildings, and various other objects. Some people make Youtube videos. Sorry.
  5. I doubt that this has anything to do with "the cloud". The main impact of "the cloud" is that it's tied up most of the server developers for the last year. There are a few user accessible sims on the main grid that are in "the cloud"; Hippotropolis is one. They work fine. Now there was a big problem with clothing two days ago, because of a problem with the texture baking server. The texture baking server composites all the texture layers for an avatar (skin, tattoos, texture clothing, etc.) into one texture. A bug introduced by an update had it losing layers, resulting in broken clothing looks. . That seems to be fixed. Teleports, region crossings, and connecting to adjacent regions have been troublesome for years. LL has not done enough to fix it. It's my biggest beef with LL. Some of that gets better in "the cloud", because the networking within the data center is faster there, and some of it doesn't. A recent fix made region crossings more reliable for objects (vehicles, mostly) but avatar crossings are still a problem. 2021 needs to have more developer time spent on server side bug fixes.
  6. That's about normal. Most of the viewer CPU time usage is in one thread. It will normally use 100% of one CPU, but not much of the others. There's some minor stuff going on in other threads (texture decompression, streaming media, etc.) but the viewer won't really use all the cores of a modern CPU. It was designed in the single-core era.
  7. You can get some clothing to fit the Roth 2 body, more or less. Mesh jackets or tops for classic avatars and texture bottoms tend to work together, because the texture clothes are inside the mesh. Same in reverse - mesh jeans/slacks usually work with texture tops. Roth2 does BOM, so all the old freebie stuff works. Mesh tops and bottoms usually don't fit together, unless they're a matched pair. Resizable shoes and boots for classic usually work. Only get mesh stuff that comes with its own matching alpha layer. The New Resident Island people are trying to come up with some free or low cost items Roth 2 can wear, for their walkthrough tutorial.
  8. OK. I was hoping I could use that to find out some info from a script, but no. Thanks.
  9. I'm personally OK with the current chat system, but I suspect it's too limiting for the generation that grew up with SMS and Instagram. LL needs to look hard at this.
  10. The ones described in http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Viewer_URI_Name_Space Tried, in the address bar of the viewer, secondlife:///app/appearance/show and [secondlife:///app/appearance/show] but nothing happens. Do they do anything, or is that obsolete info?
  11. Dead mall in Mosh, in Zindra. Someone mentioned dead malls. Here's a rather nice futuristic one. The Zindra monorail runs through it. This was built by the Moles, and parceled up into little 400/m^2 stores. The stores are almost all empty, and some big landlord has bought up all the empty spaces. They're for sale, for about L$125/m^2. Something has gone wrong with the economics here.
  12. Is it fixed now? Clothes changing in SL could be more graceful. You get to see all the intermediate states as the baking server grinds. Compare Fortnite: Clothes changing in Fortnite Party. Takes about as long as in SL, and works like Editing Appearance, but looks more polished. (If we could tell from LSL when appearance changes have completed, we could have changing booths like this in SL. Useful for stores.)
  13. I had this happen intermittently in my house in Bellessaria. I could rez a prim in my bedroom, but not rez from inventory. In the living room, I could rez from inventory. I've seen this in my workshop in Zindra, too. I'm not sure if rezzing is failing, or the detection of where to rez from the cursor is off.
  14. I've had those flower dispensers work in the past. After you've completed a few years of Premium, you should get a burial plot. It would be a nice gesture.
  15. That problem just hit Star Citizen players. AVX, Advanced Vector Extensions, means the CPU supports some extra instructions Intel and AMD put in back in 2011. But they're not in some newer low-end Intel CPUs. See this list on Wikipedia. This is called "product segmentation". It's possible to recompile a viewer to run on CPUs without the AVX feature. The original poster clearly has working OpenGL, since he can run Aquarium in the browser. You might try downloading and running the 32-bit version of Firestorm. Normally there's no reason to do that on a 64-bit CPU, but it's worth a try in this situation.
  16. OK, at this point you need more Windows help than I can give. Any Windows expert want to take over? Are you at a current Windows 10 with current updates? If he's getting 30FPS on the WebGL Aquarium, something is doing OpenGL reasonably fast.
  17. OK, your computer can do OpenGL 3D graphics OK. It should be possible to get some viewer to work. What do you get for "What Graphics Card is in your PC?"
  18. Useful graphics resources: https://www.howtogeek.com/414201/how-to-check-what-graphics-card-gpu-is-in-your-pc WebGL Aquarium test - A nice graphics demo that runs in the browser. If you visit that page, you should see a big aquarium with fish swimming. If you do, there should be an FPS (frames per second) number at the upper left. What is that number?
  19. Viewer taking 10 seconds or more to connect to the next region. 4 times in 10 minutes, different regions around Heterocera. Late at night, SL not heavily loaded. This is happening far too often. Are others seeing this?
  20. You have a point. It's a big issue, at least in the US. There's a hard division in entertainment now between "sexless" and "porno". Not much in the middle. The number of R-rated movies is way down. This is a real problem for SL. SL is neutral on sex, and, as a result, livestreams from SL are totally barred from Twitch.tv. The chilling effect is strong here. Now that's being paranoid. It's a group of avatars sitting around a table; developers discussing technical issues. There's no obvious answer on that one. Although LL should lobby Twitch to allow streaming from General regions, as a minimum.
  21. Anybody doing this on the male side? I've been looking into why Roth 2, which is supposed to wear mesh clothing for classic avatars, has fit problems. Roth 2 on left, classic avatar on right. Same height. Roth's clavicles are too far back at the shoulders, and the settings on a few sliders need to be re-calibrated, so that butt size 50 means the same thing on both avatars. Then fitmesh should work. Anyone know enough about avatar construction to explain how to do that?
  22. "Inadequate video drivers"? SL will run on machines that are way below the level needed for modern games. What computer do you have?
  23. Oh, you've never found those? Sims full of slot machines. Search SL content for one and visit.
