  1. There is a piece of old market terminology most people today don't know too well... Bubble. Sl Maionland has been in a bubble for some years. Problem goes like this. Some abandoned land worth 10k ls, goes on sale, and a professional market shark snaps it up at that price in the auction, because he knows the amateur 'i can get righ off land' fools will try to shave a couple of k. He then puffs it up in the description with a lot of obsolete bull about "ocean view" (edge of a continent) or "road access" (nobody uses the damn roads since tp anywhere came in) and so on, I once saw a parcel puffed up by saying it was "only 3 sims by road from the Phil Linden Memorial Sports Complex". This allows him to sell it to somew gullible free market fallacy believer who THINKSD 20k is a 'real bargain and a chance to get rich quick off land" Of course, when said fool tries to sell it for 30k it doesn't sell, and free market fallacy believers are stubborn, they cannot accept that they can't make money, and will cling stubbornly to their over priced land paying tier month after month desperate to avoid the shame of negativ e equity at any cost. Eventually they give up and... Parcel Abandoned to Gov Linden... The sisuation isn't helped by the fact that you can get land on private regions for a fraction of the buy/rent costs of mad-mainland, and can do so without being 'premium'. Thats why 60% of most of the mainland continents is empty, supply greatly exceeds demand, blake sea is different, people WANT that for the sailing and flying etc. some scruffy hillside with so so views of the world ocean, meh... Bubble prices will remain inflated and sales poor as long as free market fallacy people refuse to bite the bullet and move on, accepting they were screwed over by professional predators almost as soon as they looked into 'investing in land'. 19th Century RL get rich quick schemes do NOT work in 21st Century SL. The only way to get rich of land in SL is buy private sims and rent to people who wont't pay stupid mainland prices.
  2. You could check out Exxess too, they do some more 'alternative' styled ponytails, or look at Alice Project, Tameless might be worth a look to.
  3. ChinRey wrote:It's named "Sansar", not "Stupid" btw. A brief history of Project Stupid... The executive formerly known as Phil Linden comes up with the idea of starting SL 2, to put SL 1 out of bussiness, he goes to the bankers and they say... NO! Phil makes a public announcement to the effect that he intends to stand on a street corner with a paper cup begging for money to make his dream happen. Ebbe panics, and launches Project Stupid, claiming that if anyone is going to put SL out of bussiness, it should be him (Yes he actually said that, in an official blog post on SL...) Plan A... A new improved SL, running on cloud, so all the pesky stuff about servers, and technicians etc. is somebody elses problem... They announce no account/content transfer. Massive negative consumer reaction, exodus of people people convinced SL is doomed begins... Plan B... an innovative not-sl-at-all vr experience foxcused on pretentious experimental art installations by famous vr artists. There are not enough of those to make a sustainable bussiness, nor enough consumer interest to get anyone to wisit the stuff. Plan C... Corporate VR product preview displays! Companies will be really edgy aboiut uploading their 2020 model saloon car onto Stupid, incase a competitor copybots it and launches the shape in 2019... Plan D... Ummm, Well... Maybe, you know we could, ummm... Oh crap, where is Ebbe, he's full of bright ideas, didn't he come up with plans A,B, and C... It's called Project Stupid for a reason, can you guess what that reason is?
  4. It's pretty simple of i recall corectly... That head isn't actually made to fit that body, it's an unrigged attac hment, so you need to manually scale and position the head your self for a best you can get cludge fit...
  5. Ebbe's c;laim that his pet project, Project Stupid, is for everyone and not for geeks is utterly inane. Project Stupid is centered around VR, Ebbe even posed for a pic on one of his How to save SL blog posts holding an occulus vomitcam geek-goggle. Any conversation between the vr people rapidly decends into pure unadulterated geekdom as they discuss the hypothetical merits of the Uberthrutch 9000 vs the Megapuke 8500 if/when either of them comes out of alpha testing assuming they will sell for less than 600 US greenbacks. Ordinary non techy non-geeks won't use Project Stupid, its geek specific from the get-go.
  6. There is a definate sky is falling culture in SL. How many group chats have you been in where sombody posts a link to marketpiece . secondwife . con, and within 5 seconds there is somebody telling everyone that if you read the phishing link you need to change your password, contact your bank and ask for a new credit card, shoot your dog, stock the bunker with 5 yrs supply of MRE's, and boil your eyeballs in bleach... Like you said... if people dont trust their fave store and caspervend to debit 100 ls extra for that over the gift purchase, remove the card from your hud, delete, purge trash, problem solved. yopu lose nothing you didn't have before, the merchant gets 500 for nothing less caspervends % cut on the transaction, everyone's happy. I went to a store last year... There were no 'giftcard scammers' or griefers or 'all those bad people called resident' we get warned about. There was a bloody annoying popupwarning from the sky-is-falling store owner that spammed me every 90 seconds to warn me about all the bad things that wern't there. I don't accept cards from strangers, I don't click phishing links, I don't let the sky fall on me, but... I do shop inworld which means accepting boxes and scripted unpacking bags from people i don't know personally, it means rezzing boxes I get from the mp, any of which could have evil inside, do i trust these maitreya people, they might be scamming hackers, who is this slink person and can i trust them, caspervend? they make systems to take money off people, booo hiss hackers AR them all I say, Here... click this box for a free armoured tinfoil hat...
  7. Probably hasn't, because most people don't realise they NEED to, and LL/FS share a cache... Whish is why her problem happens in BOTH vewers, I did suggest using a different viewer with it's own cache but... *shrug*
  8. Ok, here's the simple factsa, without any "the sky is falling and everyone but me is a hacker" bs... That L$500 gift card pops up with that dialog becausze linden labs insist you get that warning. Yeah, while you are wearing the card, if you try and buy a L$600 dress, it will bill you the extra 100 in 'cash'. And ? Is that a problem? If so, don't buy 600 ls items. It's done that way to HELP you, means you dont end up with a whole bunch of cards with dribs and drabs of money left on them that you cant use becayse no card has enough left to buy anything. The card is probably 'rechargeable' too, many are these days, you can reload it at a terminal in the store. As for 'access forever to your money' it can only take money when you are wearing it, take it off, threat gone. Do you trust the store? The danger isLESS than walking into a real life store and paying with your credit card, or standing at an ATM and typing in your pin. People panic way way too much in SL.
  9. ChinRey wrote: I hadn't joined SL in 2003 but I'm fairly sure they didn't have avatars like Oz Linden's Grand Old Man or Dan Linden's skeleton or Nyx Linden's little robot back then. I was on the Catznip Group chat just before xmas chatting with Nirans (the Dev team for Black Dragon TPV), and they were commenting on how they just go and talk to Torley Linden when they have a problem rather than filing JIRA's, and later in the conv the 'out of touch dev' thing came up and Nirans admitted that... *gasp!* That after a decade or so, Torley Linden has finally bought a new beard... It's a sculpty... As forf the 'Welcome Island Refugee FuglyMesh' I'd rather not remember, I mean, a years preparation for fitmesh launch and they launch with no-mod non-fit fitmesh, where no two avis can share a single clothing item, and all of them looked worse than ruth! My retinas still bleed remembering that stuff so I won't...
  10. ChinRey wrote: Unfortunately, right now Second Life doesn't really seem to have a CEO at all, he's too busy with Sansar these days. That's a pity because although the SL team at LL seems to work far better now than ever before, they're still making mistakes and a lot of those msitakes are exactly the kind somebody like Ebbe could have helped them avoid. Yeah well, bst way to improve the SL Dev team... Frankly I suspect whats needed is to FORCE all dev team members to throw away their 2003 phil linden clone avis, and get decent ones, then FORCE them to spend at least 2 hours a day roaming the main grid, in a decent modern avi, so they can SEE what their hypothetical planned changes will mean and SEE what SL is really like. There was that 'amazing new stealth feature' one of them dreamed up, after belatedly noticing that for years, people had used prims more than 10m on a side to build with. So, he thought it would make sl look better if 'large architectural prims' were rendered even if they were upto 32 m PAST your draw distance, and modified a sercer code to do this with altered priorities on the server sending object details to your viewer for rendering. In a 2003 noob avi, on an empty sim on beta grid, this probably looked fine. When they rolled it out on Le'Tigre RC (about 10$ of the main grid back then) people in flexy skirts, flexi hair and sculpty boots (this was back in the pre mesh era) found that half their hair, half their skirts, the floor they were standing on and the avi's around them were invisible, BUT... you could see the floor slabs of the buildings on the sim next door AND the gpu crasher prim on the grifer in the next sim too. Then they rolled this crud out at 2 week intervals over Bluesteel RC and Mafnum RC, so you had a 30% chance of tp'ing to a sim where your avi would... fail. It was more than 8 weeks before they even TRIED to fix the mess. The 'geeks' are in the dev teams, geekdom isn't finding out how sl works, thats an essential survival skill, geekdom is thinking than an empty sim on the beta grid in an old old ststem noob avi is 'representative of current sl' and designing around that.
  11. See the suggested settings posted for your laptop, some viewers 'default suggested settings' can be just... bad.
  12. melaniehaughton wrote: Hi Theresa, Thanks you for your response to my issue. It is getting a bit irritating to me. You ask about my specs. My computer is as follows. Computer: Acer Inspire 5740 Processor: Intel Core i5 M430 2.27 GHz 4GB RAM Video Card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 I updated the driver earlier today. At the moment I have SL Viewer running. The graphics settings are as follows: Main tab Quality & Speed Mid Draw Distance 512 Avatar Maximum Complexity No Limit Atmospheric Shaders & Advanced Lighting Model both unchecked ADVANCED tab Shaders - TRansparent water, Bump Mapping and Local Lights checked Basic Shaders - unchecked Avatar Hardware Skinning & Avatar Cloth checked The present status that my avatar is presently visible. However, the quality of my avatar's appearance is not particularly good. The skin is blotchy and poor detail. There are ugly shadow. If I undress my avatar, the skin seems weird as if the skin seems grafted on in places, most notably from my hip and below. Will this help in some way? Mel Ok, as I suspected, the problem isn't your hardware specs, but your SL preference settings are... strange... For starters try... Draw Distance 96 Avatar Harware Skinning On Avatar Cloth OFF Basic Shaders ON Atmospheric Shaders ON Advanced Lighting ON Shadows OFF If some of these options are not immediately visible, look for the advanced settings button on the graphics tab of the preferences panel. Try to avoid using the big single 'graphics quality slider, as it tends to lump everything together, cant have this feature your nachine can cope with un less it turns on another 5 your machine cant etc, advanced panel is how you make SL look ok and run ok.
  13. Svana Verne wrote: WOW Klytyna!!!! I ask a simple question and for help and you have to be sarcastic? Not ALL of us can afford a brand new computer and stuck with a antique. Quote"I've seen plewnty of 2006 clothes and sahoes and hair, my retinas still bleed on occasions." plenty....shoes..... so see? none of us are perfect. That wasn't sarcasm, it's a statement of what is pretty much a fact. I comment that you are using what is essentiaslly an outdated badly supported viewer, and you assume i "can afford a brands new computer" but in fact, I can't, my pc is old and obsolete but I still have less trouble running SL than a lot of the complainers, BECAUSE I pay attention and don't just throw my hands in the air and scream "waaaah it's not the good old days anymore". I've been told by a fossil perma-noob that his computer was "too old and weak' to display mesh so he wouldnt switch to a mesh viewer", only to find when he stated the machines specs, that it was faster than mine and had twice the memory, which I told him. You asked a question... Where is the bento button... There is no bento button, not in any viewer, least of all one that's basically a clone of viewer 1. I keep seeing "old machine, old avi, use singularity its small and has pies!", but that doesn't mean it's the right answer Here's another quote from you, "I HATE mesh I HATE Bento and liked things as they were in 2005". What can I say, loading slowly affects us all sometimes, there is a thing called 'render weight', I recently saw somebody with a renderweight of over half a million... guess how old their boots were, yup pre mesh, build of hundreds of prims and sculpties. Why are they wearing stone age boots when the mesh ones are better? "I HATE mesh and liked things as they were in 2005" Old prim shoes and hair that look damn ugly and have bling and recolor scripts IN EVERY SINGLE PRIM, leading to their hidious looking wearers walking aroiund with 600 + scripts using 50mb plus of script memory, that quite literally lags the whole damn sim. Welcome to the future, it's time to throw away that VIP signature 2005 skin, with the highlights that look like they were applied with a 4 inch housepainters brush over a flast color fill in flesh tone beige, and lips that make you look like you were smacked in the mouth with a baseball bat dipped in whitewash. Time to ditch those 300 prim 'shoes' that look like they were made of Lego by a 4 yr old. You'll look better and lag less. And my retinas can stop bleeding...
  14. Theresa Tennyson wrote: ERROR! She said she could see her mesh body with hardware skinning off, it just looked bad. This would suggest there's some incompatibility with something in her setup, and nobody can determine what that might be until we know wat r ir specs. It's not an insult to ask this. It doesn't mean it's her fault, or that her computer is bad. It's just information that outsiders need to look for and suggest solutions. Ok... she's been in SL 4 years, profile pic looks like a mesh head, I suspect it's safe to assume she's worn her collection of mesh body parts and clothing BEFRE the dats of the first post in this thread... Clue "restore to some semblance of normal" etc... so this is a rec ent problem, mesh loading incorrectly with skinning on sounds like data corruption to me as a most likely cause, rather than assuming that somebody's pc suddenly downgraded it's self in the middle of the night while she was sleeping. If she can see static mesh, mesh is working, if she can see other mesh avis, skinning is working, if she cant see her own mesh with skinning on her mesh data is corrupted.
  15. Annika Velde wrote: EDIT: Mixed this post with a seperate one. Even so, chill out with your sass. Researching every avenue of helping someone is never a crime. Couple of years back, an MMO I used to play did a new season update... Subsequent to which... some 10-15% of the playerbase, judging by the forum posts, suffered CTD's (crash to desktop) when the game progressed from the company logo load screen to the new season load screen. Over a period of some 4 or 5 months, 95 % of the posts on all the many many threads about this were "check ur drivas ur pc r suk", same auto response people got from the games tech support. This was in spite of the fact that the correct nature of the problem and a solution had been clearly posted within 2 days. A careless Dev, assumed that everyone would play in fullscreen and everyone had a brand new state of the art pc like the one the company provided for him at work, with directx11. So, instead of doing the directx version check BEFORE sending dx api calls, he sent a dx11 api call first, of course all those people using dx9 and dx10, their systems responded with a 2 part error code. First part was a multi error code, second part told you which of the many errors it meant. First on the list was "your graphics card has fallen out of the pc", that wasnt the subcode sent but thats the one the return cocde handler processed, since there's no error handling routine for that, boom CTD... The solution was to start in windowed mode, and then in setup options switch from 'auto detect directx version' to your particular flavour, then switch to full screen and enjoy trouble free gaming. 60 second fix posted 2 days after the first complaint thread, but 4 months later 95% of posters were still demanding specs and insulting peoples computers. Tech support is a puzzle based on clues... Ignoring those clues isa mistake.
  16. ChinRey wrote: One very interesting observation that illustrates this: I don't think Ebbe had even started his first day at work at LL before the first postings about how big a failure he was appeared. No, I may exaggerate a bit there but he certainly didn't have time to do anything before it started. That probably had something to do with where he used to work before getting the job at LL, and why he stopped working there... Analogy: You are a sailor on a New England whaling ship, in the early 1800's, the First Mate comes out on deck and anounces that there's a new Captain... Then he tells you the Captain's name is Jonah, and he's got a phobia about whales... Cue sarcastic comments before the new Captain stomps up the gangplank on his two wooden legs, and waves hello with his hook after scratching his eyepatch then anounces "Ok lads, aim the pointy end that way!".

When I log in, I do appear briefly as a whisp of white cloud but then disappears after a few seconds to reveal my eyes and my jewellery but no head or body. Tech Support 101. The clues are in the post... She can see mesh in world. Mech enabled viewer. CHECK. she has a mesh body/head/clothing based avatar with jewelery, so she used to be able to see herself, untill recently when she posted this thread. Her system CAN display SL. CHECK. Her avatar doesnt stay as a cloud permanently - She's wearing a skin, a body shsape, a hairbase and eyes, the 4 essential ingredients for not being a cloud. CHECK. When she unclouds after login, all she can see are her eyes and jewelery. She's wearing the alpha layer for her mesh body/head combo. CHECK. She can't see the mesh body/head/clothing that she is wearing. ERROR! Sounds like her viewer cannot pull details of the mesh she was wearing from the asset servers or from the cache, or both, so clear cache, perform standard inventry loss recovery options, see if this rectifies the problem. There is no need for posts saying "wat r ur specs update ur drivas ur pc an interwebs r suk", the standard commercial tech support response around the globe for the last 20 years.
  18. If your viewers are rendering static mesh around you, then they can render mesh, so the cause of your 'WORN mesh not showing may be an inventry problem, you may have a corrupted copy of the local inv list for your viewers, , clear the viewer history, or if you cant find that clear cache (for firestorm, google for their inventry recovery procedure which is a little different). Then relog and wait while the viewer reloads your inv list from the servers, , if the problem is that it lost the info on your mesh, that should fix it,. Failing that, try a different viewer, like catznip, or coolviewer or singularity, The reason all viewers seem to act a lot like each other is simple, they all connect to secondlife, so they have to be alike in many respects.
  19. Part of the problem is too many update-itis... You know... Mega-view 9000, the best sl viewer ever, its mighty dev team notice the tool to remove horses from boyscouts bottoms doesnt activate when yopu press the crtl-alt-shift-? hotkey, so, a new update only a week after the last new update, and yay, your digital boyscouts are now safe, but the other 99% of users who just want to see their new matreya looking sort of normal, cant untill next weeks thrilling instalment of... Mega-view 9000... I uzse catznip mainly, and black dragon if i feel like taking a fancy picture someplace I hardly ever experience the 'bug of the week' issues that LL and FS viewer users suffer from, smaller dev teams (black dragon is 1 person, catznip is 2 or 3? ) who'd rather get it right than get it out by friday 5pm so they can go to the pub...
  20. I don't/won't use win 10 but... I've had problems in the past with win updates causing some apps, particularly those that use opengl like SL, to glitch/fail. Sometimes you get a win update that stomps on your graphics drivers, particularly the files used to enable opengl, part of the global MS directx conspiracy to make eveyone use their system... Reinstall your graphics cards latest drivers, if it is a Windon't auto-fubar-date opengl sabatage, reinstalling the bespoke drivers for your card *should* fix it.
  21. I just tried it, not in world at present but... my feed now contains an '...updated their profile picture' entry, and the pic shows by all the feed entries, so it looks like its working again.
  22. All these channels and object keys and listeners seems a bit 'we love lag' sledgehammer vs peanut to me... Have the vendor resz a demo object, inside the demo object is a script with a timer and a die command... so on rez event, time starts... on timer event, poof self destructs. Job done simple, no need to stop vendor a killing vendor b's demos, the demos SELF delete.
  23. Invisprims wern't banned etc back in 2012, they still kind of work, but only if you have advanced lighting turned off, when they work they will hide system avis, and mess with alpha textured hair, they can also optically cut holes in mesh under some circumstances, but... Advanced lighting, As a griefing tool it's like throwing water balloons at Battleship... Oh Noe! Water!
  24. Innula Zenovka wrote: Rolig's correct, of course. The only thing I'd add is that you can change some of the camera and viewer settings if someone's using a third-party viewer that supports RLV (and has it activated, of course). See this section and this section of the RLV api for details. However, there doesn't seem to be, as yet at least, anything there that allows you to play with the avatar complexity settings. Worth noting that there is RLV api and then there is RLVa api which are pretty similar but have some noticable differences in camera/vision controls, especially now that rlva has recently been updated, and most 'rlv' TPV's actually use rlva. Go talk to Kitty Barnett maybe for RLVa help, or Marine Kelly for RLV.
